HOW TO SUBMIT CONTENT FOR LAKE ARROWHEAD LIVING All content for consideration as well as all correspondence regarding Lake Arrowhead Living Magazine should be directed ONLY to layccnews@gmail.com. This is an integral process in place for checking to be sure all content received has been considered for each particular month's publication. Items sent to any other email address will possibly be omitted. Note that Lake Arrowhead Living is published monthly (12 issues per year) in an overlapping format that covers 2 months at a time. Magazines generally arrive in mailboxes around mid-month. For example, the June/July issue will promote late June and July events and will feature articles submitted by May 10th covering happenings that took place in April and May. New content is always due by the 10th of each month to be published in the next month's issue on the following schedule. Please note that the 10th is a HARD deadline for all content unless previously discussed and planned with the layout designer. This means that if you do not have a standing dedicated section of the magazine, your content is considered "new" and the deadline of the 10th applies. Those with standing dedicated sections have a grace period for submission decided by and agreed upon with their layout designer. So I was looking at the set of golf clubs I played with when I was 16 (circa 1966) and noticed I didn’t have a Gap Wedge, a club I use on a regular basis at this stage in my life. It made me remember as a kid, you never heard Jack Nicklaus or Arnold Palmer reaching for a Gap Wedge, so I was curious when and why did the Gap Wedge come to be? My Mother had a mixed set of very old clubs with wooden shafts that were named, my favorites in her bag were the Brassie, Mashie and Mashie Niblick and as a kid I associated these with 3 wood, 5 iron and 7 iron, but in doing research for this article, I discovered that while they seem to be equivalent clubs, that conclusion is incorrect. It seems that over the past years club manufacturers have been changing the loft on clubs. Why? Simple, to get more distance. Reducing the loft slightly on a 5 iron from one manufacturer gives their club a slight distance advantage over a rival manufacturer. In 1960 a typical 5 iron had a loft of 31º now it's around 27º. Over the past forty years the loft on a pitching wedge has decreased from 50º to 45º. The sand

wedge however, hasn’t changed and remains 55º. The result of this loft creep was the need for a wedge of 50º. The result was the creation of the Gap Wedge. Mystery solved! So it seems there is no standard loft for a numbered iron across all manufacturers. I always thought the advantage in having a matched set of clubs was to have a similar feel between the swing weight and shaft. In real terms the advantage a matched set gives the average golfer is how a club performs compared to other clubs in the set. So don’t worry if your 5 iron doesn’t carry as far as your playing partner, in addition to different shaft flexibility or weight, the loft could be 2º-3º different. We have some great MGA events coming up. On June 11, we have the 3-2-1 on 5-4-3 tournament. July 23, has the MGA Shamble Tournament. If you aren’t a member of the MGA we would love to have you join our group. by Cindy Rincon Some musings of a restless mind of an old golfer…. Often ladies’ golf leagues can be challenging to join, as well as difficult to be included in the ongoing groups of players. The competition can be stiff with the focus on handicap improvement and winning. In order to join, one might feel like they must have a low handicap and at least an established game that can compete. Lake Arrowhead Ladies Golf Association is unique and quite frankly, more enjoyable. While still striving to improve our game and individual scores, we enjoy the camaraderie and fellowship over the stiff competition. The LALGA board who plans our monthly events, strives to ensure these play days are fun and encouraging for all levels of players. And due to the scramble format, everyone has a chance to be a winner. Our first event, on April 14th, “Tea Party Tee Off” was a 9-hole scramble. We had a great turnout, and everyone was ready to get our season started…however, mother nature had her own ideas for that morning with a lovely spring rain!

Of the 6 groups which started with a shotgun…3 groups turned back (to the clubhouse)soaked through and through …and 3 persevered! Congratulations to those teams who finished the round! club business SHORT-TERM RENTAL ORDINANCE CHEROKEE COUNTY, GEORGIA Cherokee County, Georgia has recently adopted an ordinance regarding short-term rentals. The full ordinance is available at ShortTermRentalOrdinanceCherokeeCounty20210806.pdf (cherokeega.com), but we wanted to make each property owner aware of this ordinance and have highlighted a few of the key points in the ordinance. 1. The purpose of the ordinance is to establish standards for short-term rentals of privately-owned residential structures rented to transient occupants, minimize adverse effects of short-term rental uses on surrounding residential neighborhoods, and preserve the character of residential neighborhoods. 2. A certificate is required to lawfully rent, operate, or advertise any property for short-term rental. a. Owners must apply to the Cherokee County Development Services Center on an annual basis for a certificate. b. Certificates require an initial administration fee and annual renewal fees. 3. The Certificate number must be listed in any advertisement for the rental of the property. 4. No short-term rental shall offer more than five (5) bedrooms for rent. 5. The use of outdoor speakers by short-term rentals is prohibited. 6. The number of occupants shall not exceed two persons per bedroom plus two additional persons. 7. The short-term rental must have parking off the street sufficient for one car for each bedroom being rented. Parking shall only be on designated hard surfaced areas. 8. Quiet hours are 12:00 a.m. midnight to 7:00 a.m. daily, 12:00 a.m. midnight Saturday to 1:00 p.m. Sunday). 9. The Cherokee County Marshal’s office (678.493.4080) is tasked with enforcement of the ordinance

Narrows Marina Parking Permits have been mailed to Property Owners who currently lease a Narrows Boatslip. This permit must be placed on the inside windshield. Security looks for these yearly permits when checking the Narrows parking lot. Please register boats and trailers. See Boat Registration information below. BOAT REGISTRATION Boat registration forms may be downloaded from the website at lakearrowheadclub.net. Proof of liability insurance with limits not less than $300,000 is required for all motorized boats. Please mail a boat registration form and insurance to: LAYCC 486 Arrowridge Waleska, GA 30183, email membership@ lakearrowheadga.com, use the property owner drop boxes located at both security gates, or bring your form to the South Gate and the Administration office. All items in Dry Storage MUST display the current decal to continue using Lake Arrowhead Dry Storage. As a reminder, it is a violation of the covenants to park or store the following: boats, vehicles, trailers, campers, RVs, etc. on your property. Agreements may be terminated at any time due to past due accounts.

club business SHORT-TERM RENTAL GUIDELINES: PHASE I https://library.municode.com/ga/cherokee_county/ordinances/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=1106313 In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units. 1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom. 2. Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles 3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions 5. “Party Houses” are strictly prohibited and deemed a nuisance and violation of the Lake Arrowhead Covenants, Article III, Section 19. Party Houses are also prohibited by popular short-term rental companies (Airbnb and VRBO) and nuisance properties will be reported to the appropriate listing entity.

ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.

NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. Daisy Jones and the Six Taylor Jenkins Reid Ballentine Books Do you remember the 70s? Rock and Roll? Behind the Music? Daisy Jones and the Six is a novel that will take you back. Back to the days of Fleetwood Mac, when Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were burning up the stage with their all too obvious passion. Billy Dunne, the charismatic, denim-clad leader of the Dunne brothers band, is a hot mess – a talented hot messwhen Daisy Jones shows up. Copper hair, deep blue eyes, a raspy Janice Joplin style voice, she is yearning to make her mark in the music world. Originally a guest artist with the band, she and Billy begin writing songs together. Their talent – and chemistry – evolved the band to become Daisy and the Six. Two sets of brothers, two other women and Daisy. In classic Behind the Music fashion, both Billy and Daisy were lost in drugs and alcohol. But then Billy got married, got clean, and … things changed. This un-putdownable novel is written in screenplay fashion: Each character’s words are written after their identification. First person from all seven people in the band. For example: “Daisy: Billy always knows best. He knows when you’re not singing right. He knows how you should fix it. He knows what you should be wearing. I was so sick of being told by Billy how things were going to go.” The “author” – or chronicler- of the book is not revealed until close to the end. But it adds a lot to the credibility of the account. In the meantime, it’s a whirlwind ride, with concert appearances where Daisy literally stumbles on to the stage, glassy-eyed and high as a kite, only to sing a duet with Billy where their eyes meeting smolders the audience, and the rest of the band. As Billy’s wife watches, it is entirely obvious to everyone that there is fire between Daisy and Billy, infused into the songs that make the band runaway stars. Having written the book from an entirely first-person perspective, Taylor Jenkins Reid transports us into the minds or the characters. Even Billy’s wife gets a chance to express her feelings. There are plenty of conflicts and doubts, as personal relationships form and break amongst the members of the band. The two sets of brothers have lots to work through or avoid. One of each is always dominant, and resentment doesn’t do the band any favors. Love relationships also develop but when different goals and world views collide, that too brings pain and the PAGE 24 | JUNE // JULY 2022

need for perseverance to keep the professionalism of the band intact. It certainly doesn’t help that Daisy seems intent on destroying herself in public and on the stage, although her stumbling, slurry voice seems to have no effect on the audience’s rapture as they listen. The book is fast-paced and as addictive as the substances being consumed. Camila, Billy’s wife is almost preternaturally calm, centered, and certain of herself and her family, regardless of what she witnesses on the stage. If there is a rock, or a touchstone for the chaos, it’s Camila. The lyrics to the songs are included at the back of the book. Just reading those gives you a a great sense of the longing and anxiety that Billy and Daisy feel. “TURN IT OFF Baby, I keep trying to turn away I keep trying to see you a different way Baby, I keep trying Oh, I keep trying I gotta give up and turn this around There’s no way up when you’re this far down And baby, I keep trying Oh, I keep trying I keep trying to turn this off, But baby you keep turning me on.”

Coming to your TV Screen in 2022 Reese Witherspoon’s production company is bringing Daisy Jones and the Six to the small screen this year in a 13-part limited series. Starring Riley Keough as Daisy and Sam Claflin as Billy, we will finally get to hear the songs, not just the lyrics of this fictional band. Riley Keough is Elvis Presley’s granddaughter – her mother is Lisa Marie Presley, and Sam Claflin is best known as Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games movie. No release date as of yet.
