This is an integral process in place for checking to be sure all content received has been considered for each particular month's publication. Items sent to any other email address will possibly be omitted. Note that Lake Arrowhead Living is published monthly (12 issues per year) in an overlapping format that covers 2 months at a time. Magazines generally arrive in mailboxes around mid-month. For example, the June/July issue will promote late June and July events and will feature articles submitted by May 10th covering happenings that took place in April and May. New content is always due by the 10th of each month to be published in the next month's issue on the following schedule. Please note that the 10th is a HARD deadline for all content unless previously discussed and planned with the layout designer. This means that if you do not have a standing dedicated section of the magazine, your content is considered "new" and the deadline of the 10th applies. golf news 2022 SUPER BOWL SCRAMBLE by Uel Kemp Tee Times 770.721.7902 8am to 6pm Daily

On February 5, Craig Glasgow, Bill Maynard, Brian Schell, and Sean Webb won this year’s Super Bowl Scramble. The team set a tournament record with a score of 113 points! Congratulations to Bill Maynard for his hole in one on #7. It is Bill’s 10th hole in one!

The Driving Range closes at 5:00pm daily. Hours subject to change due to inclement weather/volume.

While a typical 4-person scramble golf tournament, scoring for this event was based on a football analogy. For example, a bogey (safety) was worth negative 2 points, a par (field goal) was worth 3 points, a birdie (touchdown) was worth 6 points, and an eagle (touchdown and 2 point conversion) was worth 8 points. In addition, a team could earn one or two extra points for each birdie by sinking either a short or long putt. Using this format the winning team scored 113 points.

Overall, 13 teams (50 golfers) braved the cold and competed in the tournament. The Club awarded prizes to the first 2 teams in 3 flights. Each 1st Flight winning team member received a football trophy and pro-shop gift certificate. Other winners received pro-shop gift certificates. The flights were named after the NFL quarterbacks with the most Super Bowl victories. The winners are shown in the pictures below. golf news NOTES FROM 19TH HOLE by Robert McGurk So why are there 18 holes on a golf course? In the early days of golf, courses in Scotland didn’t have a standard number of holes. Leith Links, where the first recorded golf competition was held in 1744, had only 5 holes. Blackheath followed Leith and had five holes, later expanding to 7. Bruntsfield Links also only had 5 holes in 1744 and expanded to 6 in 1818. Montose Links had 7 holes by 1810, 14 holes by 1825 and 25 holes by 1866. St. Andrews (Old Course) had 12 holes by 1764, with two being played once and the other 8 twice for a round consisting of 22 holes. Rumour (as the Scot’s spell it) has it, that a round of 18 holes came about because there are 18 shots in a fifth of Scotch Whiskey and by pacing himself a golfer would consume only a fifth every round. Sadly, while most of the fellows I play a round with would like to believe it to be true, the evolution of an 18 hole round is far simpler. In 1764 St. Andrews decided to combine four of the holes into two, reducing their number to ten, still playing two only once and 8 played twice making a round 18 holes. In 1857 St. Andrews put second holes on the 8 double greens and the club declared “18 holes is reckoned as a match” for its members. As a result

of this decision by what is recognized as the home of golf, all courses began to adopt the standard set by St. Andrews Links. We have some interesting MGA tournaments coming up in March and early April. A 3-man eliminator tournament March 26, a Pinehurst Scramble April 2 and MGA Match Play starts April 1. These events are in addition to our weekly Wednesday and Saturday Dogfights. Our first Quarterly MGA meeting is March 16. RULES OF GOLF The wintertime is a great time to refamiliarize us with the rules of golf. They do change at times and knowing them will help us to be better players. As anyone who has played in a tournament knows, the rules of golf are most important to know and understand, especially at those moments when our little white, orange, pink or green balls do not cooperate! 10 basic golf rules for the beginner and reminders for all players, especially when playing a tournament: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Clubs in the bag – no more than 14 Play within the parameters of the tees (markers) Avoid playing the wrong ball (rule 6.3) Green rulings (how to pick up, clean and replace the ball on the green, etc) Play your ball as it lies (rule 9) Unplayable lies (rule 19) No way back from Out of Bounds (rule 18) Seeking advice (shouldn’t ask advice on club selection from an opponent, but can ask questions on rules) Definition of Ball Striking (can’t scoop or scrape..must hit with head of club) Score correctly and honestly

Here are some common situations /questions that could be important to know and be able to follow: • •

Q. I can’t find my ball after searching for three minutes – what are my options? A. If you can’t find your ball within three minutes, it is lost. Because it is lost, you must return to the spot of your previous stroke and play another ball from there for one penalty stroke (see Rule 18.2b).

Q: What is the rule for lifting, cleaning, or dropping a ball in place? A: (see Rule 14) This rule covers when and how the player may mark the spot of a ball at rest and lift and clean the ball and how to put a ball back into play so that the ball is played from the right place. When a lifted or moved ball is to be replaced, the same ball must be set down on its original spot. When taking free relief or penalty relief, a substituted ball or the original ball must be dropped in a particular relief area. A mistake in using these procedures may be corrected without penalty before the ball is played, but the player gets a penalty if he or she plays the ball from the wrong place.

club business SHORT-TERM RENTAL ORDINANCE CHEROKEE COUNTY, GEORGIA Cherokee County, Georgia has recently adopted an ordinance regarding short-term rentals. The full ordinance is available at ShortTermRentalOrdinanceCherokeeCounty20210806.pdf (cherokeega.com), but we wanted to make each property owner aware of this ordinance and have highlighted a few of the key points in the ordinance. 1. The purpose of the ordinance is to establish standards for short-term rentals of privately-owned residential structures rented to transient occupants, minimize adverse effects of short-term rental uses on surrounding residential neighborhoods, and preserve the character of residential neighborhoods. 2. A certificate is required to lawfully rent, operate, or advertise any property for short-term rental. a. Owners must apply to the Cherokee County Development Services Center on an annual basis for a certificate. b. Certificates require an initial administration fee and annual renewal fees. 3. The Certificate number must be listed in any advertisement for the rental of the property. 4. No short-term rental shall offer more than five (5) bedrooms for rent. 5. The use of outdoor speakers by short-term rentals is prohibited. 6. The number of occupants shall not exceed two persons per bedroom plus two additional persons. 7. The short-term rental must have parking off the street sufficient for one car for each bedroom being rented. Parking shall only be on designated hard surfaced areas. 8. Quiet hours are 12:00 a.m. midnight to 7:00 a.m. daily, 12:00 a.m. midnight Saturday to 1:00 p.m. Sunday). 9. The Cherokee County Marshal’s office (678.493.4080) is tasked with enforcement of the ordinance

Security looks for these yearly decals when checking the Dry Storage area. Boat Slip renewal contracts have been mailed to Property Owners who currently lease a Boat Slip. Please register boats and trailers by April 1st to avoid a late fee. See Boat Registration information below. BOAT REGISTRATION Boat registration forms may be downloaded from the website at lakearrowheadclub.net. Proof of liability insurance with limits not less than $300,000 is required for all motorized boats. All items in Dry Storage MUST display the current decal to continue using Lake Arrowhead Dry Storage. As a reminder, it is a violation of the covenants to park or store the following: boats, vehicles, trailers, campers, RVs, etc. on your property. Agreements may be terminated at any time due to past due accounts.

club business SHORT-TERM RENTAL GUIDELINES: PHASE I https://library.municode.com/ga/cherokee_county/ordinances/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=1106313 In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units. 1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom. 2. Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles 3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions 5. “Party Houses” are strictly prohibited and deemed a nuisance and violation of the Lake Arrowhead Covenants, Article III, Section 19. Party Houses are also prohibited by popular short-term rental companies (Airbnb and VRBO) and nuisance properties will be reported to the appropriate listing entity.

ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.

HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events.

FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. waterways. Phosphorous, which contributes to vigorous growth, can deplete the oxygen in water and contribute to the formation of algae blooms. One study found that lawn residential lawn fertilizers were one of the dominant sources of water pollution in urban watersheds.

Hopefully, many of you had an opportunity to read my article about lake quality and the impact of fertilizers used on grass lawns. It is important that ALL homeowners know the history of Lake Arrowhead, become aware that WE DO NOT have septic tanks but a sewer system, and that the HEALTH of our lake is impacted by the amount of fertilizers running off from EVERY SINGLE LOT in the community of Lake Arrowhead.

PROACTIVE COMMUNITY MEASURES Several of us in the neighborhood have observed an increase in the amount of algae blooms here in Lake Arrowhead. We are hoping that we as a community can work together to prevent a further increase in the amount of algae bloom. Since our neighborhood has a sewer system versus septic systems, we would like to focus on the entire neighborhood helping to reduce the amount of Phosphorus flowing into our water shed. THANKS for your help!

HISTORY Lake Arrowhead has been known as one of the cleanest lakes in Georgia. Lake Arrowhead is naturally filled by a multitude of springs. These springs form creeks that pass through large portions of our neighborhood including; Phase 1 (many different sections of Phase 1), Highlands Vista, High Pointe, Peninsula, Ridgewater Lane, Sanctuary Cove, and Clearwater. In short, there is a stream that collects runoff water from every neighborhood in Lake Arrowhead. All of these creeks flow into Lake Arrowhead. Lake Arrowhead’s water then travels to the Etowah River, which then helps to fill Lake Allatoona, and on and on. WE are so fortunate to be able to enjoy such clean water at the beginning point of its journey. SEWERS NOT SEPTIC TANKS Lake Arrowhead is special in another way! Quite a few of the lakes in Georgia have homes on the lake that rely on septic systems. That means the home’s septic system potentially drains into their lake. Lake Arrowhead is one of the few lakes that have a sewer system that is treated by a private water treatment facility. Those who are new to Lake Arrowhead may not understand that a significant part of the monthly water bill is for sewage treatment. We have about 70 lift stations to operate and maintain. Then there is the network of piping and the sewage treatment itself is located near the dam. Few mountainous communities are fortunate to have a sewer system that helps to enhance lake water quality. HEALTH OF A LAKE Pollution can cause water quality to drop. The nitrogenphosphorus-potassium fertilizer mix that you apply to lawn has enormous potential to impact water quality. Nitrogen is water-soluble and can move through the soil and leech into

Organic fertilizer has a lot of benefits for both you and your lawn. SEVERAL neighbors have used Milorganite Organic Nitrogen fertilizer successfully. A large lawn, ecologically, is a dead space 2. It is recommended to cut the amount of turf grass in your yard by half 3. If you have turf under a tree, change it out to mulch 4. Ecologically, the best thing to do is plant native trees, bushes, and flowers 5. Native plants often have deep root structures, making them good for storing water or providing drainage. They have also co-evolved for local conditions. 6. Providing wildflower-rich habitat is the most significant action you can take to support pollinators. Adult bees, butterflies, and other pollinators require nectar as

community interest their primary food source, and female bees collect pollen as food for their offspring. Native plants, which are adapted to local soils and climates, are usually the best sources of nectar and pollen for native pollinators. Incorporating native wildflowers, shrubs, and trees into any landscape promotes local biological diversity and provides shelter and food for a diversity of wildlife. Most natives require minimal irrigation, flourish without fertilizers, and are unlikely to become weedy. 7. Urban, suburban, and rural dwellers all have the opportunity to turn the small space we occupy on earth into a space that gives back to nature. By turning even a small area in our yards into a native garden or butterfly patch, by removing invasive plants, and using organic practices, you are helping to ensure the future of biodiversity.

community interest 2021 ORDER OF ARROWHEAD GOES TO… MAURY AND RUTH NUNES! The LAPOA Board is proud to award the 2021 Order of Arrowhead to Maury and Ruth Nunes. As many of you know, Order of Arrowhead is designated to honor a person or persons who have made distinguished contributions to our community. Maury and Ruth certainly fit the bill.

And both Ruth and Maury support the causes that are dear to LA residents. Ruth is a board member of the KBD Foundation, founded by LA resident Dave Davis to support special needs programs, and Maury serves (in his signature tux) as charity auctioneer for KBD’s annual event.

If you have lived in Lake Arrowhead for a long time or are newcomers, it will make no difference in your appreciation for this couple. You will have seen them everywhere! Play trivia? There is Maury in his signature tux, entertaining a room (or sometimes rooms) of residents anxious to suss out his unique style of trivia using mnemonics as organizing principle. Get the mnemonic and you’ve got the first letter. Each and every month, Maury plays the role of Will Shortz to develop and deliver great trivia contests. Play golf? You’ll know that Ruth authors monthly LGA (Ladies Golf Association) articles for the Lake Arrowhead Living Magazine, and if you don’t see her playing in multiple tournaments, you have undoubtedly seen her on her daily runs through the community. Play tennis? Maury has been the Mixed Doubles Tennis Group Administrator since 2015, and authors tennis articles for the magazine, dispensing advice and court lessons gleaned from his own personal experience. Eat at the Highlands Grill? Ruth is not only on the restaurant committee, she authors articles for the magazine on the Highlands Grill and its staff. Tired yet? Beyond playing, and very importantly, Maury and Ruth have made substantial contributions to the stability and quality of life for Lake Arrowhead residents – and beyond. Ruth is a member of the Certified Emergency Response Team, and a founding member of the Welcoming Committee, for which she organizes Newcomer Welcoming Events. And consider this: Maury has been actively involved with the LAPOA board since 2012, serving as pro-bono legal counsel from 20212-2016, and then serving as president from 2016 – 2020. Presently, he is back to serving as pro-bono legal counsel even though his term as president has ended. He also coordinated speakers for the LA Church Men’s Breakfast Group from 2016 – 2018. community interest ROMANCE ........ is in the air as Lake Arrowhead Valentine serenades take place. Very thoughtful husbands all around brought the newly-formed local Lake Arrowhead quartet, Vintage, to serenade their special lady with sweet love songs, a rose and a card. All the ladies enjoyed this surprise romantic gift. For years, The Big Chicken Chorus, a barbershop chorus based in Marietta, as well as other choruses around the country, have offered "singing valentines" to the general public to raise funds for the furtherance of youth in barbershop singing. The Big Chicken Chorus provided a wellestablished, talented quartet, Qudrophonics, to serenade diners at the Lake Arrowhead club on February 12th during the sold out dinner event. After their performance, Quadrophonics introduced the local LA quartet, Vintage, consisting of local residents, Chuck Green, John Hopper, Buddy Lord and Roger Dimsdale, two of whom are members of the Big Chicken Chorus, to continue singing in the atmosphere of romance. Sunday and Monday, Vintage fulfilled orders for many lovely ladies, some of whom are pictured here.

community interest READING FOR THE AGES I have thoroughly enjoyed Sarah Martin Jones’ Reading Between the Wines, and like you, I’m going to miss her. The good news is that she will continue her Reading Between the Wines blog, and has been gracious enough to grant me her space in Lake Arrowhead Living. Going forward, the review will be Reading for the Ages. The intent here is to include books that will appeal to readers of all ages, take place in different ages, deal with time in some manner, and are either classic or contemporary. YA fiction, historical fiction and non-fiction, and futuristic tales will all be included. With each submission I’ll provide a back-story, a movie suggestion, ideas on how you can tell your own story, or whatever is appropriate. Today’s book was named Amazon’s #1 book of 2021 and is written by an author who has previously penned other best-sellers. The suggestion/context box will provide a bit of information about the Lincoln Highway. Please get in touch if you have suggestions for books I might review.
