HOW TO SUBMIT CONTENT FOR LAKE ARROWHEAD LIVING All content for consideration as well as all correspondence regarding Lake Arrowhead Living Magazine should be directed ONLY to layccnews@gmail.com. This is an integral process in place for checking to be sure all content received has been considered for each particular month's publication. Items sent to any other email address will possibly be omitted.

Note that Lake Arrowhead Living is published monthly (12 issues per year) in an overlapping format that covers 2 months at a time. Magazines generally arrive in mailboxes around mid-month.

For example, the June/July issue will promote late June and July events and will feature articles submitted by May 10th covering happenings that took place in April and May. New content is always due by the 10th of each month to be published in the next month's issue on the following schedule.

Please note that the 10th is a HARD deadline for all content unless previously discussed and planned with the layout designer. This means that if you do not have a standing dedicated section of the magazine, your content is considered "new" and the deadline of the 10th applies. Those with standing dedicated sections have a grace period for submission decided by and agreed upon with their layout designer.

MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS:

January and February usually brings us our chance for a wintery mix of bad weather. Please keep warm clothing, boots, and a blanket in your vehicle ready for the unexpected. Have an alternative method of heating and cooking available in case of a power outage during an ice event. If our roads are wet please use the truck route and not SAUDER HILL.

HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events.

Also, we identify visitors to our property but we will not be responsible for a visitor that you don’t want coming to your property. If that should happen don’t go to the door and immediately call 911 then security.

PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind.

As a reminder, please drive on our roads at 25 mph or slower to keep our roads safe.

ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion.

FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore.

NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone.

No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks.

NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks.

BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup.

PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks.

PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

Park for use by member and guests only.

No lifeguard on duty - swim at your own risk.

Park closes at sunset. Use the facilities at your own risk.

No littering. No motorized vehicles. No fires.

No alcoholic beverages. No glass containers.

No loud music. No fishing. No pets of any kind allowed.

Children under 18 must be supervised by an adult.

AT T E N T I O N Property Owners who currently lease Dry Storage Space will receive your 2022 Dry Storage Decal by mail.

Please register boats and trailers by April 1st.

ANYONE DAMAGING PROPERTY OR VIOLATING PARK RULES WILL BE BANNED. BOAT REGISTRATION Boat registration forms may be downloaded from the website at lakearrowheadclub.net. Proof of liability insurance with limits not less than $300,000 is required for all motorized boats. Please mail a boat registration form and insurance to: LAYCC 486 Arrowridge Waleska, GA 30183, email membership@lakearrowheadga.com, use the property owner drop boxes located at both security gates, or bring your form to the South Gate and the Administration office. All items in Dry Storage MUST display the current decal to continue using Lake Arrowhead Dry Storage. As a reminder, it is a violation of the covenants to park or store the following: boats, vehicles, trailers, campers, RVs, etc. on your property. Agreements may be terminated at any time due to past due accounts.

club business SHORT-TERM RENTAL GUIDELINES: PHASE I

https://library.municode.com/ga/cherokee_county/ordinances/code_of_ ordinances?nodeId=1106313 In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units.

1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom.

2.

Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles

3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions 5. “Party Houses” are strictly prohibited and deemed a nuisance and violation of the Lake Arrowhead Covenants, Article III, Section 19. Party Houses are also prohibited by popular short-term rental companies (Airbnb and VRBO) and nuisance properties will be reported to the appropriate listing entity.

ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.

NARROWS MARINA PARKING Parking in the Narrows Marina parking lot is reserved for slip holders only. Slip holders are requested to park only one vehicle in the parking lot. Please car pool guests from Great Festival Park. Property owners in the Narrows should use Great Festival Park for any overflow parking.

Confirm Your Information for the Biannual Printed Directory Many of you already know that every two years, Lake Arrowhead publishes a printed directory of our residents, searchable by last name and by street. This is a fabulous resource that makes it easy for our friendly residents to find – and be found by – their neighbors. The next printing of the directory is coming mid-summer of 2022, and with this comes the Herculean task of obtaining up-to-date information for all residents who wish to be included!

The information for the printed directory is taken from a master resident database kept by the Lake Arrowhead Directory Committee. You can see what contact information exists for you in the database by reviewing the Online Owner Directory, which can be found on the lapoaga.com website. Login is required to access this information and is available only to property owners.

So, what do we need from you?

Most of you will have no changes, but if your phone number or email has changed within the past year or two, or you wish to add or delete information, here is what you need to do!

If you DO wish to be included in the directory: 1.

Log in and review your information in the Online Owner Directory – www.lapoaga.com.

2.

If your information needs updating, please submit a Directory Information Form (found on the website under Documents) and note on the form that it is a correction to EXISTING data. Please be sure to include all information that you wish to have published, not just the info you want to revise.

3.

If you are a new resident and:

a. already submitted a Directory Information Form when you moved in, but your information is not yet included in the Online Owner Directory, no action is needed at this time. b. want to be in the directory but have not submitted a Directory Information Form yet, please do so and your information will be added to the master database and will appear in the next update of the online and printed directories. c. can’t remember, go ahead and fill out the Directory Information Form, just in case!

If you DO NOT wish to be included in the directory: Please send an email to lapoadirectory@gmail.com with your name and property address, indicating your desire to have your contact information permanently removed from the master directory database. community interest READING BETWEEN THE WINES

Dear neighbors.

Since 2015 it has been my pleasure to publish a book review each month in the Lake Arrowhead magazine.

My concept was simple – to share some of my favorite reads and pair it with a wine sourced from each story’s setting. I’ve tried to make my book selections heart touching (“Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand” by Helen Simonson), thought provoking (“American Dirt” by Jeanine Cummins) atmospheric (“Bone River” by Megan Chance), and humorous (“The Good Lord Bird” by James McBride). I hope that one or two of my reviews tempted you to read the novel and sip the wine.

Beginning in January 2022, I will no longer be a Lake Arrowhead resident, so it is only right to open this magazine page to another writer. In the history of our community, you’ve been treated to the wisdom of Jane Doss, the culinary taste of Tommy Simmons, and the insights of Nyle Srok, among others. I’m sure someone will use this page to share gardening tips, personal essays, music reviews or any number of topics of interests shared around the lake.

My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry Fredrick Backman. New York: Simon and Schuster, 2015.

“Every seven-year-old deserves a superhero. And that’s just how it is. Anyone who doesn’t agree needs their head examined.”

That’s what Elsa’s granny says, and, naturally, Elsa agrees. How else could a seven-going-on-eight-year-old girl who has been labeled everything from “different” to “very grown-up for her age” to “massively annoying” survive being bullied at school, her parent’s divorce, a new half-brother or sister on the way, a new father, and a granny who has cancer? As Elsa would say, “It’s a little complicated.”

While readers of Fredrik Backman’s previous two books may have found A Man Called Ove a difficult character to admire and Britt Marie Was Here a hard pill to swallow, they will surely fall in love with Elsa and her feisty granny. They have a bond that every parent, every child, every grandparent longs for. Their bond is so strong that even Elsa’s Mum is jealous.

The bond was forged on those nights when Elsa couldn’t sleep and would crawl into bed with her granny who lives across the hall in an apartment flat. Else would nod off PAGE 16 | JANUARY 2022 // FEBRUARY 2022

listening to stories about the six secret kingdoms of “The Land-of-Almost-Awake.” There she sees all the magical creatures – the “enphants” and “regretters” and the “noween” and “wurses” and snow-angels and princes and princesses and night and cloud animals that sore over the endless dark forests where Wolfheart and all the other monsters live. And the dragon. Every secret kingdom has one.

But one night when Elsa’s granny is in the hospital, Elsa overhears that her granny is dying. When she is called into the room, her granny tells her in the secret language they share: “I have an important assignment.” She must deliver letters and tell each person who receives one, “My grandmother asked me to tell you she’s sorry.”

Thus begins a treasure hunt like no other. Not only must Elsa find the letters and put together the clues for whom to deliver each one to, she must also process the death of the person she loves most. That’s a tall order for a little girl, even if she is nearly eight.

What Elsa learns as she carries out her mission is that the six secret kingdoms have an uncanny resemblance to

community interest the neighborhood where she lives, especially her own apartment complex and the people who live behind the closed doors.

Beckman’s story is not only about little Elsa. It also unfolds the remarkable life of her granny – a surgeon who responded to crises around the world and saved as many people as she could who were broken by the horrors they experienced. Photos of these people are taped to granny’s bedroom ceiling. Some even live nearby.

The lessons Elsa learns from her adventure are endless: She learns that a full-time ‘nag-bag’ is actually a very lonely person; that a drunk has a deep sorrow; that a dog is truly one’s best friend, and that not all monsters look like monsters. Some carry their monstrosity inside. She also learns that every adult has regrets and that every person wants love.

“Having a grandmother is like having an army,” Elsa realizes. “This is a grandchild’s ultimate privilege: knowing that someone is on your side, always, whatever the details. Even when you’re wrong. Especially then, in fact.

A grandmother is both a sword and a shield.” Read this book and pass it on to someone you love.

MY WINE RECOMMENDATION On special occasions, like her birthday, Elsa is allowed a taste of wine. While Sweden is better known for its vodka, the Swedish Hill Winery (http://swedishhill.com/) set forth forty years ago to change that. This third-generation family-owned vineyard has won five Winery of the Year awards in international competitions in the past four years. Both Elsa and her granny would enjoy the award winning 2014 Late Harvest Vignoles dessert wine.
