HOW TO SUBMIT CONTENT FOR LAKE ARROWHEAD LIVING All content for consideration as well as all correspondence regarding Lake Arrowhead Living Magazine should be directed ONLY to layccnews@gmail.com. This is an integral process in place for checking to be sure all content received has been considered for each particular month's publication. Items sent to any other email address will possibly be omitted. Note that Lake Arrowhead Living is published monthly (12 issues per year) in an overlapping format that covers 2 months at a time. Magazines generally arrive in mailboxes around mid-month. For example, the June/July issue will promote late June and July events and will feature articles submitted by May 10th covering happenings that took place in April and May. New content is always due by the 10th of each month to be published in the next month's issue on the following schedule. Please note that the 10th is a HARD deadline for all content unless previously discussed and planned with the layout designer. This means that if you do not have a standing dedicated section of the magazine, your content is considered "new" and the deadline of the 10th applies. golf news THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS AT THE 2021 KATHY B DAVIS FOUNDATION (KBDF) MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT By Marilyn Biviano, Dave Davis, Ruth Nunes, and the Loving Memory Families; Photography by Susan Tarrquinio, Marilyn Biviano, Dave Davis, Susan Arkin, Eileen Oberg, Kathy Duerr, and the Loving Memory Families It was a cool November day. Volunteers were everywhere. There were volunteers greeting folks as they came in the Clubhouse door, staffing the registration tables, setting-up the raffle tables, and setting up the breakfast provided by Bojangles restaurant. Lake Arrowhead, is a beautiful place (see photo of Sunrise over Lake Arrowhead) with a beautiful golf course, fantastic restaurant, and a fun and generous community. This KBDF charity tournament was a big one with 96 players in 25 teams. A picture of the big group of players and volunteers (see photo below) reflects the community spirit and charity participation at Lake Arrowhead. At about 8:30, Dave Davis, founder and president of the KBD Foundation, provided some introductory remarks about the KBD Foundation, the Foundation’s focus on the special needs community, and the many contests and prizes in the day ahead. Then, Uel Kemp, Golf Pro and General Manager of Lake Arrowhead golf and restaurant, gave an overview of the Tournament and rules. Then, the Tournament began with a shotgun start! Some of the fun games with fabulous prizes included first and second team prizes for three flights, longest drives, and closest to the pin. There were also huge hole-in-one prize contests sponsored by A Boat House of Douglasville (Georgia) and Day’s Chevrolet of Jasper (Georgia). To observe and document hole-in-one prize wins, the KBDF has a “Witness Team” of volunteers that have been specially trained. (Pictured below is the 2021 KBD Tournament Witness Team as well as the Witness Team Captain, Dolores Bennett.) This year, no one won the hole-in-one prizes but a couple of golfers came close. HOLE-IN-ONE SPONSORSHIPS “A Boat House Inc.” of Douglasville, Georgia, sponsored a $100,000 “shootout” hole-in-one prize that included the purchase of a boat from the dealership--the winner must buy a boat out of the winnings. The $100,000 boat on display was gorgeous. To qualify for the shootout, there was a putting contest in the morning before the tournament began. There were four tournament players that won the putting contest. After the 18-hole tournament was over, each of the four that won the putting contest had a chance to win the $100,000 boat. It was a difficult shot—a hole-in-one on the 18th hole. No one won it but it was a very exciting contest. “Day’s Chevrolet” of Jasper, Georgia, offered some fantastic hole-in-one prizes. On Hole 17, tournament players could win a new car for a hole-in-one. On Holes 2, 7, and 13; the hole-in-one prizes were other nice items, like the $1,200 worth of golf clothes and shoes. While no one won the Day’s Chevrolet hole-in-one prizes, several tournament players were within feet of a win.

golf news THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS AND THE KBDF GOLF TOURNAMENT The spirit of Christmas is known by most of us as the spirit of giving. After all, isn’t that what Christmas is all about, giving? Therefore, it seems all together fitting that the Kathy B. Davis Foundation (KBDF) Memorial Golf Tournament was held here at Lake Arrowhead on November 5th, with Christmas Spirit as its theme. In spite of cold breezy conditions, this years tournament was a big success. All proceeds go directly to support programs and activities that enhance the lives of youths and adults with intellectual/ developmental disabilities. If you are a resident of Lake Arrowhead, it’s hard not to have heard of the Kathy B. Davis Foundation, but just in case you don’t know the back-story, the 501c3 nonprofit organization was created by Lake Arrowhead resident, Dave Davis. In his words, “I started the nonprofit organization to honor my late wife Kathy, who gave so much of herself to our family and the special needs community.” So, who does the KBDF benefit and to whom are they giving? Since the foundation was created ten years ago, it has supported local schools with funds for special needs programs, scholarships for university students working toward a special education career through the KBDF Adam Holland Special Education Scholarship. It also supports Special Olympics, Angels on Horseback (in honor of Melissa Hopson, a late and passionate volunteer) and Adults with Disabilities Medical Healthcare (ADMH). Flowers for a Purpose is a very important program which

gives the special needs community and senior citizens a chance to use their creative skills to create floral arrangements. The flowers are then given to others who are either ill or just going through a difficult time. Dave says “my son Eric has a connection with each program we support.” I could name a few more programs but by now you get the idea that the KBDF is all about giving. The Kathy B. Davis Foundation is somewhat unique among charities today, as it has no headquarters building owned or rented, no paid staff, no expense accounts and virtually none of the overhead that often take big bites out of the charitable donations and contributions for which non-profits are competing. Fund raising efforts for the Foundation totaled $22,000 for 2021. Dave operates KBDF free of charge out of his home. His charm and that of his special needs son, Eric, have been all that are needed to recruit volunteers to help with everything from staffing tournaments, to auction management, to accounting needs. Many people within our community and area businesses have been very generous to the KBDF with both their time and funds. Dave sends his thanks to everyone who supported the tournament: volunteers, players, donors, corporate sponsors, the KBDF board of directors, Uel and the staff of the clubhouse and pro shop. Special thanks to Robert McGurk and Ralph Lumpkin who kept things organized and on schedule; Mike Hackett who was instrumental in planning and maintaining the budget. Flowers for a Purpose is a program that our special needs participants help prepare and deliver flowers to our communities’ families and nursing home residents that need a friendly gesture of kindness and a smile. His wife Joann has worked hard keeping up his legacy with generous donations to the KBDF auctions and volunteering her time. If you

ANNETTE SCHIMMELMAN, LOVING WIFE, MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER, FRIEND, AND NURSE Annette passed away on July 5th, 2021, from complications due to Parkinson's disease. She was married to Albert Schimmelman for 55 years and they had 3 children together, Michael, Claire, and Greggory. She was also blessed with 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. She worked as a nurse for 30 years. She was an accomplished member of the Civil Air Patrol and served as the Public Affairs Officer. She was a volunteer First Responder in Lake Arrowhead where she also served as the training officer for all new recruits. Annette was an avid golfer and tennis player. She spent many hours working in her garden and entertaining friends and family at her home and pool. She loved her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her spirit will live on in all of us.

FRANK COCO, LOVING FAMILY MAN AND FRIEND There was never enough going on in the world for Frank; he was constantly planning the next party or event where he could enjoy the company of others. He enjoyed all aspects of life; most notably spending time with his Grandchildren, spending time on his boat, fishing, golfing, hiking, and playing poker. The world will be a much quieter place in his absence, and he will be missed by all who knew him. His poker group buddies will miss him and forever remember him as “the fifty-cent raiser.” No matter what the bet, Frank would up it at least fifty cents. Rest in peace Frank.

I met Kathy in 1972 in Naples, Italy. She was the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen, and I am still completely perplexed to this day as to why she took any interest in me. We fell in love and went to college together after my stint in the Navy and as they say, the rest was history. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in Psychology from the University of Kentucky and needed every bit of that education to figure me out for the rest of our lives together. Kathy always placed the needs of her family and others before hers. She was a strong advocate for the intellectually developmentally delayed community and became a court advocate just before her passing. She loved her family dearly.
Melissa and Steve Hopson were happily married and raised three children. She was a therapeutic riding instructor and an integral part of Angels on Horseback for 20 years, an active member of the Lake Arrowhead Church, and a volunteer for several charities. Melissa was loved by everyone that met her and described by many simply as beautiful inside and out. She left this world too soon, but we all hope she is dancing in heaven.

golf news TURKEY SHOOT GOLF TOURNAMENT by Uel Kemp On Saturday, November 13, 40 golfers (divided into 20, two-person teams) played in Lake Arrowhead’s eleventh annual Turkey Shoot Golf Tournament. This year’s event, which began with a 9:00 am shotgun, included three golfing formats, each played for six holes- alternate shot, best ball, and scramble. At the end of play, the 20 teams were placed into one of three flights according to their final 18-hole score. Prizes were awarded to the top three teams in each flight. by Jan Garbiel In last month’s article I was lamenting on the end of the Lake Arrowhead LGA’s Spring/Summer golf season. At that time, we had two more events remaining, our last play event in October and our Fall Business Meeting and Awards Dinner. The weather was beautiful for the October play event and we had nine ladies for our 18-hole scramble. The theme of the event was “Annie Get your Par” and a few showed up in cowboy hats instead of visors. The points spread was tight but the following walked away with the prize money for the day. 1st Place Kim Brophy & Jan Garbiel 2nd Place Grace Kreft & Lois Olson Reality really hit that the season was over when we had our end of season awards banquet November 10th. Twenty-eight ladies showed up for a wonderful buffet dinner prepared and served by Chef Jason and his staff. The tables were decorated with a glass pumpkins filled with flowers sitting next to little aspen trees with sparkling lights, all created by Grace Kreft. This was the evening for reminiscing and receiving awards for our 2021 season and discussing plans Most Improved: 1st Place: Arra Bolding 2nd Place: Patti Adams 3rd Place: Lynn DeWolfe
for our 2022 season. With ideas gleaned from this meeting, the LGA Board will soon begin planning for our annual charity golf tournament in support of Angel House of North Georgia and our play events for the 2022 season. Our fall meeting is also the time to present cash awards and pins to the top three ladies following categories: Most Improved, Most Birdies and Most Play Days. We are looking forward to the cold weather to move in and out quickly so that we can hit the fairways again. There are those of us that will be stowing our clubs to that corner in our garage and waiting for warmer weather. But there will be a few of us that will brave the lower temperatures and keep chasing that little white ball down the fairway. Just call us the “Polar Bear” ladies league. Your LGA Board would like to congratulate everyone and to thank you for a great year.

They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom. 2.
Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles
3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions 5. “Party Houses” are strictly prohibited and deemed a nuisance and violation of the Lake Arrowhead Covenants, Article III, Section 19. Party Houses are also prohibited by popular short-term rental companies (Airbnb and VRBO) and nuisance properties will be reported to the appropriate listing entity.
ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.
NARROWS MARINA PARKING Parking in the Narrows Marina parking lot is reserved for slip holders only. Slip holders are requested to park only one vehicle in the parking lot. Please car pool guests from Great Festival Park. Property owners in the Narrows should use Great Festival Park for any overflow parking.

The Bohemians – Jasmin Darznik. New York: Random House, 2021. You know the photo even if you don’t know the photographer. It was taken in 1936 at a pea farm in central California. A woman sits in a lean-to tent – her chin against her palm; a baby in her lap; her gaze distant toward something, or nothing. Two children, one on either side, hang from her shoulders. The photographer titled the image “Migrant Mother.” Just two words, but in the image is the face of the Great Depression – the hunger, the fatigue, the hopelessness. (In fact, the woman photographed had just traded the tires off her truck for food.) When the photographer snapped the photo for a government program that documented relief sent to farmers who had been hit hard by the collapse of the U.S. economy, she instinctively knew that this image would tell the whole story of the thousands of people driven from farmland in damaged prairie states who sought a better life in California. John Steinbeck wrote about their plight in “The Grapes of Wrath.” Dorothea Lang photographed their pain. But before Lang became a recognized photographer, she was one of many poor, struggling artists in San Francisco. They called themselves the “Bohemians,” and their ranks included photographer Ansel Adams, American West painter Maynard Dixon, journalist Consuelo Kanaga, activist Donaldina Cameron, and artist Frida Kahlo. They lived and worked in an area known as the Monkey Block (where now stands the Transamerica Building), a short distance away from Chinatown where seedy remnants of the Barbary Coast still exist. While Jasmin Darznik’s book is historical fiction (with emphasis on the latter), she captures one key element of San Francisco that is often omitted from other histories of this city – its absolute hatred of Asians. When a young Dorothea arrives from New Jersey poor and desperate in 1910, she forms a fast friendship with a woman Lang’s biographers call “the Chinese Mission Girl”. Darznik gives her a name – Caroline Lee. As Caroline and Dorothea attempt to establish themselves as artists, culminating in Dorothea’s success as a portrait photographer with Caroline managing the studio, they see a city still recovering from the 1906 earthquake. It is also a city where the slave trade is alive and well – turning young Chinese girls into prostitutes and servants. (In fact, the mayor of San Francisco and eventual U.S. Senator, John
Phelan, campaigned with the slogan “Keep California White.”) Darznik also puts her characters at the center of the Palmer Raids, named after Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer – an attempt to round up foreign anarchists, communists, and radical leftists. (On a single night in January 1920, officers arrested four thousand people in thirtythree different cities.) Darznik unmasks the fears that rule the city, from the Spanish flu pandemic, massive income inequality, and anti-immigrant violence and discrimination. While she does a decent job of capturing the unconventional lifestyle of its residents and its impact on a young Dorothea, she stops her story short of the later years of Lang’s life when her photographic skills earned her name recognition. (For that part of her story, read Linda Gordon’s 2009 biography “Dorothea Lang: Life Beyond Limits.”) For an interesting read about two gals making their way in a dangerous city, “The Bohemians” will captivate you.
MY WINE RECOMMENDATION When the Bohemians could afford to celebrate, they drank champagne, and while yes, if it is produced in California, it is technically a sparkling wine. But the makers of Domaine Carneros by Taittinger Brut Cuvée 2014 would argue that their sparkling can hold its own against its French cousins. The Carneros AVA is one of California’s most celebrated winemaking regions and lends its name to Tattinger-owned Domaine Carneros Their 2014 vintage sparkling has an aroma of peaches and berries. With its affordable price, it’s a standout. $29
