This is an integral process in place for checking to be sure all content received has been considered for each particular month's publication. Items sent to any other email address will possibly be omitted. Note that Lake Arrowhead Living is published monthly (12 issues per year) in an overlapping format that covers 2 months at a time. Magazines generally arrive in mailboxes around mid-month. For example, the June/July issue will promote late June and July events and will feature articles submitted by May 10th covering happenings that took place in April and May. New content is always due by the 10th of each month to be published in the next month's issue on the following schedule. Please note that the 10th is a HARD deadline for all content unless previously discussed and planned with the layout designer. My lovely wife (Heather) and I recently moved to Lake Arrowhead in May of this year and we have thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Daily walks along the Flat Rock Trail are one of our favorite pastimes. Listening to these individuals is what inspired me to seek out a position on the LAPOA board. This is one of the most beautiful communities I’ve ever been associated with. golf news 2021 POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP On Saturday September 25, Bill Maynard defeated George Gibbons on the last hole to win the 12th annual Points Championship. Bill has had an impressive year, this is his third individual win! He won the Senior Men’s Club Championship, the MGA’s Match Play tournament, and now the Points Championship. Congratulations Bill! This event, which is possibly the most unique and pressure packed tournament of the year. According to the tournament rules, all ten players start at the same time, on the same hole. At the end of each hole, the golfer with the highest score is eliminated from the tournament. If two players tie with the highest score, a chip off is held to determine who advances. The closest to the hole continues unless there are 3 or more players in the chip off. In that case, the player that is farthest from the hole is eliminated. This process continues for nine holes until only one golfer remains. Golf members earn points throughout the year by playing in Club sponsored golf tournaments. They receive 10 points for participating in a tournament but can earn more by winning or finishing at least fourth in a tournament. Ten members qualify to play in the Points Championship. The format of the Points Championship, known specifically as a “nine hole shoot out” brings a different type of pressure than any other played in Lake Arrowhead. It is,
for example, the only one where a high score on a hole can result in elimination from the tournament. In addition, it is the only tournament where family and friends follow along to cheer on their favorite participants. This adds a little extra excitement and pressure for the golfers in that almost every shot draws some type of vocal response from the crowd. For many of us, these pressures tend to turn our brains into mush, particularly in the early holes where elimination is disappointing. The first hole saw Larry Adams eliminated. Ron Travis was eliminated on 11 in a chip off with Pat Farrelly. Hole 12 got the ladies club champion, Eleanor Gibbons. The 13th hole ended Pam Glasgow’s run. She lost to, men’s club champion, Brian Schell in a chip off. The 14th hole saw the elimination of Pat Farrelly. Paul Bolding was the odd player out on hole 15. Brad Jones was eliminated on hole 16. Brian Schell was knocked out on the 17th hole in a chip off with Bill Maynard and George Gibbons. Bill Maynard won the final hole, 18, in a chip off with George Gibbons. Congratulations to all the participants on a great season and qualifying for the Points Championship. Thanks to Golf Professionals Uel Kemp and Eddie Carlson and the rest of the club staff for all their hard work. It was a great tournament.

by Jan Garbiel Hot Summer days haven’t stopped us from playing golf. The LALGA play event for the month of August proved that to be a fact. Fifteen ladies showed up and were ready to play an 18-hole 3-person scramble. We headed out for a fun day with each team hoping that there was a long ball hitter, a great chipper and someone who never misses a putt. The pace of play was fast and we were back to the club restaurant for a late lunch and cool drinks. Everyone anxiously waited to see the scores and if their team was in the money. The following teams walked away with the honors and cash for their pockets. Our Fall Business Meeting is scheduled for November 10th and we would like to extend an invitation to attend our meeting and become a member of the Lake Arrowhead Ladies Golf Association. Our league was created for all skill levels so there is no excuse to not join. On a final note, the LALGA bid farewell to Assistant Golf Pro Kevin Aines with a gift prior to his departure. Kevin in turn sent us a lovely bouquet of flowers. We will miss him and wish him the best in his new position at Towne Lake Hills Country Club. 7th Annual Homeless Veteran Charity Golf Event set for Friday October 22nd at Lake Arrowhead Highlands Course
The 7th annual Charity Homeless Veterans Golf Outing is set for this fall at the Lake Arrowhead Highlands Golf Course in Waleska, Ga. The shotgun start event will be held on Friday the 22nd of October and will have a 4 person team scramble format. The event is put on by the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans program (CCHVP) with support from local veterans and volunteers. 100% of the proceeds of the golf outing goes to support the various programs of the CCHVP and 100% of the monies spent by the CCVHP stays in Cherokee County. Homeless Veteran Situation in Georgia today— In last November’s Housing and Urban Development report to Congress, the State of Georgia was identified as lagging in several areas as it relates to Homeless Veterans to include: Updates to Federal and State numbers were not available for 2020 due to COVID. As of 2019:
State of Georgia ranks 3rd among states for the largest number of homeless veterans in the Balance of State homeless areas (rural areas which make us 152 of the 158 counties in Georgia) State of Georgia ranks 3rd behind Hawaii and Oregon with the highest rate of unsheltered homeless veterans in the nation. Georgia has a 63.1% rate of unsheltered vs sheltered homeless veterans within the Balance of State Continuum of Care (COC).
Cherokee County ranks #2 in total homeless persons in the Balance of State. Bibb County ranks #1.
Cherokee County does not qualify for VASH or Per Diem housing support for Veterans. We do qualify for SSVF Grants for Veterans with families with children under 17. It typically takes up to 12 weeks to get into the SSVF program.

TRIBUTE RIDGE HONOR SOMEONE YOU LOVE OR WHO SERVED IN THE MILITARY This year, as part of the Cherokee County Homeless Veteran Golf Program (CCHVP) golf event and in celebration of Veterans Day, we are looking to fill this ridge with signs commemorating a loved one, living or deceased, Veteran or non-Veteran. We are creating a special sign that you can customize with up to three lines of 22 characters for creating a personalized message. In addition there is a logo space that can be added that can identify the organization that your loved one was part of. If your loved one is/was a Veteran this logo field can represent the branch of service where your loved one served, i.e. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, WWII Army Air Corps, etc. For other professions/organizations, such as, Parent, Grandparent, Policeman, Fireman, Teacher, Rotary, Lions Club, or something else, you can fill in the “OTHER” field with this information and we will select an appropriate logo to have displayed in this area.
All signs ordered will be placed on “Tribute Ridge” during the CCHVP golf event on Friday October 22nd, 2021 at the Lake Arrowhead Highlands Golf Course in Waleska. Once the event is over, all signs can be picked up and taken home to be displayed in your front yard on Veterans Day or any other special occasion. Signs are 24”x18” in size and come with an H-stand for inserting the sign into the ground. The signs are made of weatherproof plastic so that they are designed to be placed outside. Printed areas are only done on one side of the sign.
If you are unable to pick up the sign at the golf course, you can pick up the sign the following week at the Thomas M. Brady American Legion Post 45 located at 160 McClure St in Canton, Ga between the hours of 2PM to 5:30 PM Monday-Friday.

The speed limit in Lake Arrowhead is 25 mph. Information about the north gate bus stop and traffic flow pattern is available at the north gate. Lock your home and vehicles even when you are away for a moment. This will help protect your valuables. Valuables left in a vehicle should always be kept out of sight to discourage theft. Our crime rate in Lake Arrowhead is very low so let’s keep it that way- If you see suspicious activity, alert Security or Cherokee 911. Let’s all help keep our community safe.

FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

BOAT REGISTRATION Boat registration forms may be downloaded from the website at lakearrowheadclub.net. Proof of liability insurance with limits not less than $300,000 is required for all motorized boats. Please mail a boat registration form and insurance to: LAYCC 486 Arrowridge Waleska, GA 30183, email membership@lakearrowheadga.com, use the property owner drop boxes located at both security gates, or bring your form to the South Gate and the Administration office. All items in Dry Storage MUST display the current decal to continue using Lake Arrowhead Dry Storage. As a reminder, it is a violation of the covenants to park or store the following: boats, vehicles, trailers, campers, RVs, etc. on your property. Agreements may be terminated at any time due to past due accounts.

WELCOME NEW OWNERS
In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units. 1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom. 2.
Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles
3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions 5.
“Party Houses” are strictly prohibited and deemed a nuisance and violation of the Lake Arrowhead Covenants, Article III, Section 19. Party Houses are also prohibited by popular short-term rental companies (Airbnb and VRBO) and nuisance properties will be reported to the appropriate listing entity.
ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.

community interest LITTLE BOY BLUE HERON by Suzie Champitto I’m writing this article to bring attention to our wonderful wildlife and what we can do to when we see one of these creatures or birds injured. Did you know it is illegal to try and rehab a wild animal? There are resources for us to contact to help our critters or birds. Little Boy Blue was a fledgling blue Heron that a friend of mine, Kim, found on the lake by her house. {His mother would sit on Kim’s boat or stand close to her dock.) Blue became tangled in fishing lines and had a couple of hooks embedded in his leg. Kim contacted me and we called several vets to see if they could treat Blue, but most veterinarians are not licensed to treat water fowl. Blue wasn’t in great shape. Sunrise Veterinary said they didn’t treat birds but would look at Blue and see if they could help get him untangled and the hooks out. Kim, who has a heart as big as Texas, wrapped Blue in a blanket and took him to the Vet. The veterinarian was able to untangle the fishing lines and remove the hooks from Blue’s leg, but there was little more that she could do to treat Blue. The Vet followed up with an antibiotic shot and gave Kim the name of a facility where she could take Blue for rehabilitation. Unfortunately, that facility only treated raptors. Kim and I tried finding a rehab where she could take Blue but unfortunately, she ran out of time. Blue succumbed to his injuries at the lake where his mother waited for his return.
Later in the day we found out a neighbor had seen Blue tangled up days before but did not notify anyone. If he had contacted someone, Blue might have been saved. If you find an animal or bird that has been injured, notify someone. It is quite possible the animal or bird can be saved. There are many resources for various wildlife rehabilitation. Below is a list of websites to help you locate a licensed rehabilitation person. They can advise you on how to handle the situation. The Heart Mender: A Story of Second Chances – Andy Andrews. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 2005. It’s 1942 and along the Gulf of Mexico, a fleet of German U-Boats prowl the waters in wait for cargo ships leaving the ports of New Orleans and Mobile. With no blackout orders in place, the massive tankers, outlined against coastal lights, make easy targets for the powerful torpedoes from the Nazi subs. Under gag orders from President Roosevelt, newspaper and wire services do not publish that the enemy is less than a mile away, for fear of panicking the population. (In fact, before Hitler recalled the fleet in 1944, the U-Boats in the Gulf of Mexico and off the eastern coast of the Carolinas and Florida, had sunk more than 800 American vessels.) But residents of Foley and Gulf Shores, Alabama, know what is happening, especially when bodies and cargo wash ashore on the crystal white sands of a pristine shoreline that stretches from Florida to Louisiana. Decades later, residents still have little knowledge of just how close America was to destruction from the German navy. (In the two-year presence of the U-Boats, more than 1,300 US navy men, 201 Coast Guard personnel, and exactly 5,682 merchant marines lost their lives to U-Boat attacks in American waters, sometimes in full view of people on the beach.) It was only by accident that author Andy Andrews, a resident of Orange Beach, Alabama, discovered in the late 90’s a large rusted can buried beneath a wax myrtle tree on his Ono Island property. Inside the can was a leather package containing eight silver coat buttons, a silver anchor badge, one engraved signet ring, and three black-and-white photos – a cadet in uniform, a couple with a small child, and four officers – one of whom Andrews immediately recognized as Adolf Hitler. Thus begins Andrew’s quest to uncover the story behind these items. The result of his investigation is The Heart Mender. Based on facts uncovered by interviewing older residents in the area and plowing through online information, Andrew’s book is ‘factual fiction,’ that is, a narrative where names are changed, and events altered to suit plot events, while remaining faithful to history. Central to his story is Josef Landermann – an Oxford educated, under-lieutenant on Germany’s newest Type IXC submarine, the U-166 commanded by Hans Gunther Kuhlmann. Both are friends, seasoned sailors and loyal to Germany with one exception – neither identifies himself as a Nazi (in contrast to the onboard Nazi Party observer, Ernst Schneider, who regularly receives coded instructions from the Fuhrer). One night in black seas, Landermann is shot by Schneider and pushed overboard. Later, his body washes up on Gulf Shores beach. He’s alive but just barely.
Helen Mason, a widow and a waitress at the Hungry Mullet Café in Foley, discovers Josef as she walks the beach in the early morning hours. Having lost her husband to the war, she is admittedly angry at the world, but not knowing what else to do, she half-drags, half-walks the injured man back to her cabin, setting into motion a plot that blends mystery, suspense, intrigue, romance and a lesson on forgiveness. While Andrew’s handling of his theme gets clunky at times (especially a long discussion about John Dunne’s “No Man is an Island” meditation), his story is readable, relatable, realistic and satisfying. Characters develop in natural ways, and with many landmarks such as Fort Morgan featured in the plot, people who have vacationed in LA (Lower Alabama) will feel right at home. (Andrews even tells the location of a Nazi grave near the nine-mile marker on Fort Morgan Road.) The fate of the U-166 is also included. In 2001, underwater surveyors discovered the submarine in 5,000 feet of water, sunk by depth charges dropped by a navy patrol boat on July 30, 1942. Andrews also includes a “where are they now” section, giving the fate of his main characters. War is fought quite differently now, making The Heart Mender feel like a visit back to a different time – but one where the stakes were just as great and closer to home.
MY WINE RECOMMENDATION One of Germany’s smallest and finest wine districts is within easy driving distance of Cologne, the hometown of Josef Landermann. Unlike wine regions to the south that specialize in growing white wine grapes, the Ahr region produces Pinot Noir and Portugais varieties. The Weingut Bertram-Baltes vineyard in Dernau is a family estate founded in 1910. Their 2018 BertramBaltes Dernauer Spatburgunder is a classic savory red that is rated 93. Typical of German wines, it pairs well with pork, and to my thinking, would go equally well with southern barbeque or a shrimp boil. $22
