featured article 9TH ANNUAL ANGEL HOUSE GOLF TOURNAMENT Written by: Jan Garbiel & Sarah Bentley Photos by: Eleanor Frongillo & Kathy Duerr On May 15, as the sun begins to shine over the Lake Arrowhead Clubhouse, the organizing committee and volunteers make final preparations for the 9th annual Angel House Golf Tournament. With less than an hour before golfers’ check-in, hole sponsor signs are placed at tee boxes, 130 Bojangles biscuits are readied for breakfast, checkin tables are staffed, silent auction and raffle items from community businesses are on display, and carts sit ready to be claimed and loaded with 120 golfers. It’s almost a “carnival air” as players arrive. Friends greeting friends after a year of “social distancing” and masks, faces and smiles showing the excitement of a beautiful day and hopefully a few birdies and pars. All of this for a great cause. The North Georgia Angel House sits just minutes away for Lake Arrowhead, nestled between Waleska and Canton. It serves as a foster home to girls between the ages of 12-21. Susan Worsley, Executive Director, states that their philosophy is simple. “We believe that every girl deserves a “mulligan” and Angel House is there to provide that through with support of the community. Once that is provided, the girls are given structure, encouragement, accountability and a sense of purpose to find a direction in life that will lead to a successful emancipation. As our tag line goes, Giving Girls Roots, Giving Girls Wings. Roots grown through the relationships built in the community, yet Wings are earned as our girls move away to the next chapter of life and invest in another, just as you have in them. We could not do the important work we do without you!” With last year’s donation of $10,000, from sponsors and businesses, Angel House remodeled three of the girl’s bedrooms. They scraped all popcorn ceilings, replaced floors, ship-lapped walls, replaced light fixtures, moved electrical outlets, replaced doors, built in beds, replaced all bedding and added a smart TV to all 8 bedrooms. Each room cost $4000 to remodel. The gift certificates collected were used to purchase supplies, food, movies, crafts, take-out meals and activities. This year The Lake Arrowhead LGA and MGA will present a $21,000 check to Angel House. Susan and her crew will use these funds to renovate a home recently purchased next door that will provide housing for six additional girls who were picked up during human trafficking sweeps. That project will cost $70,000. We are proud that the LGA and MGA can provide a portion of those funds. Thank you to everyone who participated in this event!!!! We couldn’t do it without all of you.

Every year we depend on people just like you to help us provide for those in need. This has only been possible with the big hearts, support, and contributions of the Lake Arrowhead Community. SWING INTO SPRING WITH THE LALGA

The LALGA ladies ‘swung’ into spring on Thursday, April 15th with our first event of the 2021 season called “Taxed Out – Let’s Golf” It was a beautiful day for golf. We had a good turnout with teams of 2 for a 9-hole scramble and the overall close scores showed most had kept up with their games during the off season. The twist to this tax-day event was in the individual hole-by-hole scoring for final scores – we were definitely Taxed Out!!! Hole #2 - scores were doubled (par 3, if you made a 3 it counted 6, etc) Hole #7 - scores were halved (par 3, if you made a 3 it counted 1.5, etc) Hole #8 - scores were thrown out AND the big winners are: 1st Place: Eleanor Gibbons/Sarah Bentley – 38.5 2nd Place: Arra Bolding/Paula Hall – 40.0 3rd Place: Jan Garbiel/Debbie Switalski – 40.5 The luncheon before the tournament was excellent and the game was fun and a nice diversion from tax-day. Come join us for our next event – May 27th – “Putting on the Ritz” / 10 AM shotgun with lunch to follow.

MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events. FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks.

Park for use by member and guests only. No lifeguard on duty - swim at your own risk. Park closes at sunset. Use the facilities at your own risk. No littering. No motorized vehicles. No fires. No alcoholic beverages. No glass containers. No loud music. No fishing. No pets of any kind allowed. Children under 18 must be supervised by an adult.

ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.
club business LAKE ARROWHEAD YACHT & COUNTRY CLUB SHORT-TERM RENTAL GUIDELINES: PHASE I In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units. 1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom. 2. Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in
a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles
3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. b.
If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges
4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. b. c. d. e. f. g. 5.
1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner Egregious infractions may result in immediate suspension of common property access and privileges or other sanctions

community interest LET’S WORK TOGETHER TO KEEP LAKE ARROWHEAD ONE OF THE CLEANEST LAKES IN GEORGIA by Marilyn Charles and Jeff Schwartz HISTORY Lake Arrowhead has been known as one of the cleanest lakes in Georgia. Lake Arrowhead is naturally filled by a multitude of springs. These springs form creeks that pass through large portions of our neighborhood including; Phase 1 (many different sections of Phase 1), Highlands Vista, High Pointe, Peninsula, Ridgewater Lane, Sanctuary Cove, and Clearwater. In short there is a stream that collects runoff water from every neighborhood in Lake Arrowhead. All of these creeks flow into Lake Arrowhead. Lake Arrowhead’s water then travels to the Etowah River, which then helps to fill Lake Allatoona, and on and on. WE are so fortunate to be able to enjoy such clean water at the beginning point of its journey. SEWERS NOT SEPTIC TANKS Lake Arrowhead is special in another way! Quite a few of the lakes in Georgia have homes on the lake that rely on septic systems. That means the home’s septic system potentially drains into their lake. Lake Arrowhead is one of the few lakes that have a sewer system that is treated by a private water treatment facility. Those who are new to Lake Arrowhead may not understand that a significant part of the monthly water bill is for sewage treatment. We have about 70 lift stations to operate and maintain. And then there is the network of piping and the sewage treatment plant itself located near the dam. Few mountainous communities are fortunate to have a sewer system that helps to enhance lake water quality. HEALTH OF A LAKE Most of you are aware that many lakes in Georgia and the United States have had an impact to their water quality. Even the Gulf of Mexico is an example of its waters becoming impacted for humans and animals. Much of the pollution that causes water quality to drop is caused by storm water runoff from fertilizers used on lawns and farms. Other sources include treated sewage discharges, failing septic systems and clogged sewer pipes from improper household disposal of fats, oil and grease. The nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer mix that you apply to lawn has enormous potential to impact water quality. Nitrogen is water-soluble and can move through the soil and leech into waterways. PAGE 18 | JUNE // JULY 2021
Phosphorous, which contributes to vigorous growth, can deplete the oxygen in water and contribute to the formation of algae blooms and even fish kills. One study found that lawn residential lawn fertilizers were one of the dominant sources of water pollution in urban and suburban watersheds. WHAT WE CAN DO TO MAKE IMMEDIATE IMPROVEMENTS 1. You can take steps to minimize your impact on waterways. Clean the area around the lawn after you’ve mowed or fertilized. The fertilizer and grass clippings on the driveway, sidewalk, and on the road washes into the lake via the storm water. 2. If your property is on the lake, create a buffer zone between the water and the lawn. It’s a 6-8-foot area where you don’t fertilize or mow the lawn. Not only will this help with chemical pollutants, but it’ll also keep geese at bay too. Without a buffer zone, geese use the yard as their feeding ground, landing pad, and litter box. By allowing habitat plants to grow in the buffer zone, geese won’t defile the lake AND provide a sponge for lawn fertilizer nutrients. 3. Only fertilize when the lawn needs it. The grass absorbs the nutrients, and there’s no excess to pollute the lake. 4. Fertilize at the right time. Too much nitrogen too early in the growing season leads to a shallow root system that cannot hold the nutrients; nutrients are easily washed away. 5. Use the right N-P-K ratio of fertilizer. An established lawn seldom needs phosphorus except in fall or if the soil lacks the nutrient. Apply fertilizers with little or no phosphorus content. New grass seedlings need phosphorus; avoid over fertilizing to prevent pollution. 6. Test the soil to see what it lacks before fertilizing. The earth may have enough nutrients and lawn fertilizer may not be necessary. Organic fertilizer has a lot of benefits for both you and your lawn. The main benefit of using organic soil is it adds organic matter to the soil and naturally increases nutrient exchange. There are billions of microorganisms in the
community interest soil that are a key part of the process and they love to eat organic fertilizer. When the soil is healthy, it’s able to maintain better moisture levels and attracts a bigger earthworm population. Earthworms are the easiest and most effective way to naturally improve aeration and drainage plus their waste is full of nutrients that plants love. One of the best reasons to use organic fertilizer is because it lasts a long time. Since organic material takes longer to break down, these fertilizers last for months and remain in the soil even with watering or heavy rain. These fertilizers release nutrients slowly at a pace that your grass gets everything it needs without being overstimulated. Grass grows slowly and evenly which means you don’t have to mow as often. Obviously, one of the biggest benefits of using organic fertilizers is they don’t contain harsh, dangerous chemicals. You don’t have to worry about spills and difficult cleanups and you won’t harm your lawn by using too much.
Of course, these products are great for the grass, too. They get all the nutrients they need, fewer deficiencies, and stronger roots. When grass grows stronger, your lawn is less likely to suffer an insect infestation and it’s more difficult for weeds to sprout. community interest OUTDOOR BURNING BAN is in effect in 54 counties, according to the Augusta Chronicle. The annual ban prohibits residents from burning any yard or land clearing debris. Some exceptions in the ban include agricultural burning exemption, forestry prescribed burning exemption, campfires or barbeques, firefighting training, operation of open flame equipment and explosives disposal. Violators of the burn ban could face fines. Beasley said most of the violations are not even reported. The Augusta Fire Department and Georgia Forestry encourage anyone who sees someone illegally burning during the ban to contact the forestry commission at (706) 556-3962 or call 911. From the Georgia Forestry Commission: On May 1, a ban on outdoor burning begins in 54 Georgia counties, primarily in the northern half of the state. Affected residents are asked to refrain from burning yard and land clearing debris during the hot summer months because smoke can negatively impact the state’s air quality by contributing to high ozone levels. These conditions have been linked to lung and heart disease in humans. “The restrictions are required by the state Environmental Protection Division,” said Georgia Forestry Commission Protection Chief Frank Sorrells. “By limiting outdoor burning, fewer chemicals and particle pollutants are released into the air.” The burn ban is in effect until September 1 in the following counties: Banks, Barrow, Bartow, Bibb, Butts, Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, Columbia, Coweta, Crawford, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Floyd, Forsyth, Fulton, Gordon, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Heard, Henry, Houston, Jackson, Jasper, Jones, Lamar, Lumpkin, Madison, Meriwether, Monroe, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Paulding, Peach, Pickens, Pike, Polk, Putnam, Richmond, Rockdale, Spalding, Troup, Twiggs, Upson, Walker and Walton. While campfires and barbecues are exempt, the burn ban, the risk of wildfire in Georgia is always a concern. An increase in the number of wildfires has been recorded in March and April, with 860 wildfires burning almost 5,500 acres across the state. The Midnight Library – Matt Haig. Canongate Books, Edinburgh, UK, 2020. Nora Seed is extremely depressed. She’s lost her job, her best friend, her brother, her fiancé, her only piano student, and now her cat. Seeing nothing but a lifetime of failures stretching in front of her, she decides to end her life with a handful of antidepressants. The world goes dark, but then Nora awakes – not in her dreary London flat but in a massive library whose revolving shelves seem to go on forever. And in this library is someone she hasn’t seen since middle school – Mrs. Elm, the librarian who taught Nora to play chess. “These books are portals to all the lives you could be living,” explains Mrs. Elm to a very groggy and confused Nora. Instead of landing in heaven or hell or an infinity of nothingness, Nora has one last chance to explore all the options she could have pursued before she truly ends her life. Yes, Matt Haig’s book starts with a depressing premise, but what a joyride he creates as Nora explores her regrets and possibilities. “If you had done just one thing differently,” Mrs. Elm says, “you would have a different life story.” And for Nora, they all exist in the Midnight Library. First up, the engagement she broke two days before the wedding. She could have lived her fiancé’s dream of owning a pub in a picturesque village in the Cotswolds. How nice would that have been? Or the Olympic swimming option. That could have been her accepting first place for the United Kingdom as her dad, who coached her, beams with pride. Perhaps she could have gone to Australia with her best friend and surfed every day or followed her passion to become a glaciologist. Or maybe she could have stayed in the rock band with her brother, or simply been a better cat owner. Who knows? So many options; so many regrets. But as Mrs. Elm tells her, “Sometimes regrets aren’t based on fact at all. Sometimes regrets are just a load of bullsh*t.”
There’s a reason Haig names his central characters Seed and Elm. It’s not called the Tree of Life without a reason. A tree will only stay alive if its root system is healthy. But if it is rotten, “the damp rots the whole useless thing.” Nora learns this as she experiences life after life, coming away each time dissatisfied. With Mrs. Elm’s wise guidance, she learns that until she accepts herself, flaws and all, any life she chooses will eventually become unfulfilling. “Maybe there are no easy life paths,” she concludes. “There are just paths.” Like in chess, explains Mrs. Elm, “all you need to do is find a way to keep moving forward. Quoting Sartre, a philosopher she studied at university, “Life begins on the other side of despair.” And so, Nora’s sojourn in the library ends. She isn’t a black hole, she concludes. She is a burnt-out volcano that is first a wasteland before fertile ground returns. And on this former wasteland, she can plant a forest inside herself. MY WINE RECOMMENDATION Nora has much to celebrate, and that calls for champagne. Since she has limited funds, I would suggest she pop open a bottle of Canard Duchêne Authentic Brut. Its pale pink hue features bubbles of modest size and a bouquet of green apple and apricot. It’s the perfect champagne for enjoying with casual aperitifs with friends. Plus, you can’t beat the price. $35
