featured article LAKE ARROWHEAD LIBRARY by Jane Wimmer Please use and enjoy our Library!

As many of you know, we have a Lake Arrowhead community library. The library is the product of hours of volunteer work by residents and dates from when a book shelf sat outside the restaurant in the old clubhouse.

As the old clubhouse was torn down the books moved to the prior sales office at Fairway Oaks, and when that was out-grown it moved to the current location. The entrance is located outside by the Golf Shop and Administration Office doors.

Over the years Lake Arrowhead book clubs have taken on the task of re-organizing or moving books when this was needed. The latest was approximately 25 “woman hours” of work in April done by member of the Ladies of the Lake book club: Carol Burton, Jill Connor, Comella DaLee, Carole Hess, Mindy McCutcheon, and Jane Wimmer. When we started this project boxes of books littered the floor and many books were located out of alphabetical order.

We need your help. Please Never, never leave a box of books in the library. Donate them somewhere else. We do not have a librarian, and there is no room for browsers to move around if boxes of books are all over the floor.

Shelve all books you donate. If you do not have time to shelve the books, please wait until you do have time to bring them. Books are arranged by the first letter of the author’s last name and do not need to be in complete alphabetized order. (For example, Cain and Curtis can sit anywhere in the C section.)

Do not bring books by hugely prolific writers such as Tom Clancy, Nora Roberts, Dan Brown, Danielle Steel, etc. unless these are new publications. We have set aside areas on the shelves for many of these authors and have plenty of them!

Do not bring Bibles, dictionaries, reference books, Readers Digest books, or cook books.

Along with fiction and non-fiction for adults, the library has a children’s section and a section of audio books. These are on the bookshelf by the entrance door. At this time we have room for more children’s books, so donations of these – in good condition - would be useful.

Please use the library! There is a sign-in sheet located in the center of the room that helps track library usefulness to the community and justify its space. This is a wonderful community asset for all to enjoy.

Within the CCSD Division of School Operations – Student Services, CCSD is coordinating the district’s PreK-12 social and emotional learning and suicide prevention initiatives. Student Services supports school counselors, social workers, and nurses across the district.

The other major topic of the evening was our 9th Annual Angel House Charity Golf Event scheduled for May 15th. The Lake Arrowhead LGA and MGA sponsor this event to benefit the girls at Angel House. Last year we were able to give Angel House just over $10,000 that provided renovations to three bedrooms for the girls.

We also know spring is here because the LALGA “Swing into Spring” Kickoff meeting was held on March 17th, which is a rite of passage that triggers our ladies golfing season! Since our meeting happened to have fallen out on St Patrick’s Day the dining room was filled with ladies wearing the “Green”. Everyone was ready to get together and discuss our plans for the upcoming golf season. We welcomed seven new members to our LGA and the returning members are looking forward to hitting the fairways with them this year now that we have vaccines to keep us all safer.

Two major topics of the evening were the introduction of the new LGA website. Everyone was excited and grabbed their phones to view the site on their phones. MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events.

FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore.

PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind.

ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion.

NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks.

NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks.

BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup.

PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks.

ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.

club business LAKE ARROWHEAD YACHT & COUNTRY CLUB SHORT-TERM RENTAL GUIDELINES: PHASE I In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units.

1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6 months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom.

2. Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in

3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a.

Proof of liability insurance with limits not less than $300,000 is required for all motorized boats. Please mail a boat registration form and insurance to: LAYCC 486 Arrowridge Waleska, GA 30183, email membership@lakearrowheadga.com, use the property owner drop boxes located at both security gates, or bring your form to the South Gate and the Administration office.

All items in Dry Storage MUST display the current decal to continue using Lake Arrowhead Dry Storage. As a reminder, it is a violation of the covenants to park or store the following: boats, vehicles, trailers, campers, RVs, etc. on your property. Agreements may be terminated at any time due to past due accounts.

NARROWS MARINA PARKING Parking in the Narrows Marina parking lot is reserved for slip holders only. Slip holders are requested to park only one vehicle in the parking lot. Please car pool guests from Great Festival Park. Property owners in the Narrows should use Great Festival Park for any overflow parking.

PICKLEBALL AND TENNIS MIXED DOUBLES Play year-round on Monday, Wednesday, Friday - weather permitting.

Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century – Jessica Bruder. New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 2017.

They call themselves travelers, rubber tramps, gypsies, workampers and vandwellers.

In their former lives, they were healthcare workers, corporate executives, farmers, shop owners and soldiers. They live in Walmart parking lots, state parks, urban side streets and desert encampments.

Depending on the time of year, they pick raspberries in Vermont, sugar beets in North Dakota and apples in Washington. They staff tourist traps, clean campground toilets, and stock shelves at Amazon. They are modernday nomads, who, by choice or necessity, have become houseless. But never call them homeless. Their vehicle is their home.

Harper’s Magazine reporter Jessica Bruder traveled with these nomads for three years, working and living as they did to understand their individual and collective stories. While their vehicles are as varied as their personalities, the majority share a common starting point for their lifestyle – the 2008 market crash. Many saw their 401(k) accounts evaporate, others lost their savings in investments that tanked. Lots were laid off from work or owned small businesses that folded.

Some were unable to create enough of a safety net to withstand otherwise survivable traumas: divorce, illness, injury. Just about all experienced a drastic drop in their most important asset – their homes where values dropped virtually overnight from on average $300,000 to $140K. By moving into vans and other vehicles, explains Bruder, they became “conscientious objectors” to a system that failed them. When they let go of their homes, they escape the stranglehold of rent and property taxes.

Some see the lifestyle as freedom and autonomy – a chance to live closer to their hearts’ desires. Freedom, yes, but with an average monthly Social Security check for $500, all of them need to work, thus their nomad existence. “It’s important to prepare for the next WTSHTF (When the Shit Hits the Fan)”, they tell newcomers.

Bruder centers her book around one such newcomer – Linda May. Like many aging adults, at 64 she found herself working low-wage jobs that failed to reflect her years of experience.

During her lifetime, she held jobs that included trucker, cocktail waitress, general contractor, flooring-store owner, insurance executive, building inspector, IRS phone representative, caregiver at a traumatic brain injury facility, dog-feeder and kennel cleaner. Plus, she raised two daughters by herself. But after losing her home and living on a pullout sofa bed at a daughter’s apartment, she decided that the road was a better choice. Bruder follows her transition to living in 10-foot trailer she calls the Squeeze Inn which is towed by an ancient Jeep. She relies on CheapRVLiving.com created by Bob Wells, a former Safeway shelf stocker from Alaska, for tips on how to do everything from insulate her van to where to get cut-rate dentistry. Each winter he sponsors the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous, held near Quartzsite, Arizona. The two-week encampment draws an estimated 40 thousand RVers. Each year, their numbers grow.

Like the Okies of the Great Recession, these nomads represent an unprecedented shift in America. “We’re facing the first ever reversal in retirement security in modern U.S. history,” says Monique Morrissey, an economist at the Economic Policy Institute. “Starting with the younger baby boomers, each successive generation is now doing worse than previous generations in terms of their ability to retire without seeing a drop in living standards.”

In short, concludes Bruder, “Nomads are the people who chose not to wait for government or big business to save them, who chose to take their economic destiny in their own hands. People who elect to slip the middle-class noose and form for themselves a wholly

community interest new subculture.” Freedom – selfactualization – adventure. That’s their mantra. As Linda might say, “What other choice do I have?”

MY WINE RECOMMENDATION Wine is a special occasion drink for a nomad like Linda. Should the occasion call for a bottle, I would recommend the 2019 Apothic Red Blend. It’s widely available in most stores, even Walmart, and for the price delivers a pleasing blend of rich Zinfandel, smooth Merlot, flavorful Syrah and bold Cabernet Sauvignon.
