ONLINE COMMUNITY DIRECTORY UPDATE
We have gained a lot of new neighbors in Lake Arrowhead over the months since the hard-copy 2020–21 Lake Arrowhead Community Directory was printed and distributed last summer. Welcome to All!
The Online Community Directory [aka Online Owners Directory] on the lapoaga.com website has been updated recently based on information received on or before February 1, 2021. It can be found by logging into the Owner’s Portal from the Home page and then clicking on the Online Owner Directory category. [NOTE: For security purposes, this listing is located behind a log-in available only to property owners.] The biggest change you will see is the new format which more closely resembles the hard-copy Community Directory. Both the Directory by Name and the Directory by Street are searchable.
The directory includes all current owners listed in the 2020–21 printed directory as well as new owners for whom we have received the following:
A Property Transfer Form (from the Administration Office) AND A Directory Information Form (from the Resident). Please take time to review the Online Owners Directory at your earliest convenience. If your information is INCORRECT, please submit a Directory Information Form and note on that form it is a CORRECTION to existing data. Be sure to include all information on the form that you wish to have published, not just that you wish to revise. [NOTE: Attempting to edit the online version will NOT update your information in our master database!]
If you are a new resident and you find your information is NOT included in the Online Directory AND you have already submitted a Directory Information Form, please do nothing at this time.
If you are a new resident and desire to be listed in the Directory and have NOT submitted this form, please do so! Your information will be added to our master database and will appear in the next update of the Online Directory. If your contact information appears in the Online Directory and you do not wish for it to appear either electronically or in print format, please direct an email to lapoadirectory@gmail.com indicating your desire to have your contact information permanently removed from the master database. It will be removed as soon as possible. Please include your name and address in your email.
The Directory Information Form can be found on the website under the Documents menu on the Home page. Download the form, complete the information and save. Then attach it to an email directed to lapoadirectory@gmail.com. The form may also be obtained in the Administration Office at the clubhouse and/or dropped off there if you prefer.
We apologize for any inconvenience, but hope you realize the massive scope of keeping all this information up-to-date and available for everyone’s access here in Lake Arrowhead. We appreciate your assistance in this on-going effort.
If you would like to be a part of the Directory Committee, please let us know by directing an email to lapoadirectory@gmail.com. We welcome your participation!

READING BETWEEN THE WINES by Sarah Martin Jones
The Night Portrait – Laura Morelli. New York: HarperCollins, 2020.
They were called the Monument Men, and among their ranks were historians, architects, museum curators and professors. Their mission: to save countless pieces of priceless art stolen on Hitler’s directive for display in his intended Fuhrermuseum in Linz, Austria, a sprawling museum complex where the Fuhrer planned to showcase his plunder.
The largest stash the Monument Men discovered in 1945 was in an ancient salt mine high in the Austrian Alps. Shelved in this one location were 6,577 paintings, 2,300 drawings or watercolors, 954 prints, 137 pieces of sculpture, 129 pieces of arms and armor, 79 baskets of objects, 484 cases of objects thought to be archives, 78 pieces of furniture, 122 tapestries, and 1,200-1,700 cases of books. Included in this find were eight panels of The Adoration of the Lamb by Jan van Eyck, considered one of the masterpieces of 15th-century European art.
Art historian and writer Laura Morelli builds her dual-time novel, The Night Portrait, around the Monument Men’s race to secure as much art as possible in the final months of the war by adding four characters’ stories – two fictious and two historic. What separates them is 500 years. What unites them is one masterpiece: Portrait of a Lady with an Ermine.
In 15th century Italy, 16-year-old Cecilia Gallerani decides to forego entering a convent and instead moves to Milan and the palace of the Duke. Soon she is his mistress – a position that lacks job security. Morelli takes the reader into the Duke’s court, detailing the ways that Cecilia must struggle to make herself valuable to the Duke even as he has another conquest waiting in the wings.
But her image and name become legendary when the Duke commissions Leonardo da Vinci to paint her portrait. Here again, Morelli draws the reader into the moment, depicting da Vinci early in his career when he is trying to make a name for himself as an inventor first and a painter second. He reluctantly accepts the commission, wishing that the Duke would instead pay him to build one of his inventive flying machines rather than painting a young girl. Morelli captures the mind of the artist as he makes sketch after sketch of Cecilia until he finally decides to break with the traditional approach to painting a subject in stiff profile. “By capturing her beauty today,” da Vinci muses, “I will preserve it for eternity.” For readers who have gazed upon one of his masterpieces like the Mona Lisa or the Last Supper, Morelli writes as if the reader is sitting beside the master as he creates. The reader is also transported into Hitler’s obsession with art through the fictitious character of Edith Becker, an art conservator in Munich who is ordered to travel to Poland and identify all the masterpieces housed in castles, monasteries, museums, and private homes. Among the pieces she identifies are what her boss calls The Big Three: Rembrandt’s Landscape with the Good Samaritan, Raphael’s Portrait of a Young Man, and da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine. Only later does she learn about Hitler’s master plan to claim all this art for himself and his loyal staff, including Hans Frank, known in history as the Butcher of Poland who took the lives of millions of innocent Polish people. (When captured by the Allies in 1944, he claimed he was only following orders and simply wanted to “safeguard” the masterpieces.) When Edith realizes her role, she secretly documents each piece, hoping that one day it would be returned to its owner.
Accompanying the Monument Men as they race to find hidden treasures before the retreating German forces destroy their loot is Dominic Bonelli, an exhausted American soldier who lives with one mantra: “Let’s get this done. Let’s do the right thing, the just thing, so that we can all go home.” As he trudges mile after mile through decimated countryside of France and Austria, his heart longs for the friends he lost during battle and the wife and child he left at home in Pennsylvania. Some of the most poignant scenes in The Night Portrait are those of Dominic as he struggles to believe that God would allow so much destruction and how the war has stripped him of his humanity. To keep his sanity, he draws picture after picture of the people he loves. It’s the only way he can survive the discovery of Dachau and the numerous boxcars piled with dead bodies.
Writers of historical novels have a dual job – to remain truthful to history and to engage the reader in a compelling story. A good writer fulfills these two missions in such a way that a curious reader wants to read more and learn more. Laura Morelli’s writing does this beautifully.

MY WINE RECOMMENDATION Ah, Tuscany – home of di Vinci and some of the world’s best vineyards. It is impossible to select just one wine to sip with this book, but having visited the hillside town of Montepulciano, my recommendation is a classic Tuscany red wine – Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. (Just saying the name sounds mouthwatering.) This easy drinking wine is made from the celebrated Sangiovese grapes that can be traced back to ancient Rome. Whether you want to pair it with Italian foods or simply enjoy its subtle notes of cherry, plum and spice, it’s a wine you will return to again and again. I know I do. $28.
