golf news 2021 SUPER BOWL SCRAMBLE by Uel Kemp On January 30, a team from Lake Arrowhead won this year’s Super Bowl Scramble. While a typical 4-person scramble golf tournament, scoring for this event was based on a football analogy. For example, a bogey (safety) was worth negative 2 points, a par (field goal) was worth 3 points, a birdie (touchdown) was worth 6 points, and an eagle (touchdown and 2 point conversion) was worth 8 points. In addition, a team could earn one or two extra points for each birdie by sinking either a short or long putt. Using this format the winning team scored 102 points. Overall, 19 teams (76 golfers) competed in the tournament and the Club awarded prizes to the first 3 teams in 3 flights. Each 1st Flight winning team member received a football trophy and pro-shop gift certificate. Other winners received pro-shop gift certificates. The winners are shown in the pictures below. WINTER GOLF & PREPARATION FOR THE SPRING SEASON During the winter months ‘Off-Season’ in many northern and western states means the golf courses are closed, however, we are fortunate, we live in Georgia and can play all year long! Our course is never closed during these months. The LA Ladies Golf Association Season begins in March with an opening meeting and ends in November with a closing meeting, however, the months in between (November – March) are a great time to hone our games, work on our scores and handicaps, take lessons and practice, practice. If you are a long time player or new to the game or just getting interested, we hope you will consider joining in our fun. If you would like to join one of the best ladies’ golf leagues around…then Congratulations! You have just received a personal invitation to become a member of the LALGA. It is easy to join! MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events. FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.
club business LAKE ARROWHEAD YACHT & COUNTRY CLUB - SHORT-TERM RENTAL GUIDELINES: PHASE I In order to protect and preserve the residential character, property values, and enjoyment of all homeowners within the Lake Arrowhead community, please observe the following guidelines for relative to short-term property rentals of Lake Arrowhead Phase I units. 1. Short-term property rentals (less than 6-months) are strictly prohibited in both Phase II and Phase III of Lake Arrowhead. The maximum number of occupants should be restricted to no more than two individuals per bedroom 2. Short-term rentals should be registered with LA Security gate they intend to enter, and identified as short-term rentals so that the appropriate identification may be provided at check-in a. Amenity use cards, identifying renters and associated unit address b. Vehicle “hang tag” for vehicles 3. All rental agreements should include an acknowledgement that renters have received and agree to abide by the Lake Arrowhead Rules and Regulations a. If boat usage is included with the rental of the home, a printed copy of the lake rules and restrictions should be included with the rental agreement, a copy should be left in the home, and a laminated copy should be placed in the boat and/or attached to the boat key b. Violations of the lake rules and regulations may result in revocation of the issued boat permit and result in suspension of lake access privileges 4. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of guests and renters of their home and violations of the Covenants or Rules and Regulations will typically be handled in the following manner: a. 1st infraction – issuance of written warning to homeowner b. 2nd infraction – 30-day suspension of common property access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters c. 3rd infraction – 12-month suspension of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters d. 4th infraction – permanent loss of common amenity access and privileges for homeowner, including any invited guests and renters e. Addition steps may be taken depending on the nature of the infraction, including contacting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department or taking additional legal to enforce the community governing documents f. Common property damage by renters, if applicable, will be levied against the lot owner g. Party Houses are also prohibited by popular short-term rental companies (Airbnb and VRBO) and nuisance properties will be reported to the appropriate listing entity. ARTICLE III, SECTION 19. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES. Noxious or offensive activities shall not be carried on upon any lot. Each Property Owner shall refrain from any act or use of his lot which could reasonably cause embarrassment, discomfort, annoyance or nuisance to the neighborhood.
ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY
When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.
ARTICLE III, SECTION 24. OPERATION OF BOATS. No vessel or boat shall be anchored in any of the waters within LAKE ARROWHEAD or in waters adjacent to LAKE ARROWHEAD so that the same shall in anyway interfere with navigation. No vessel, boat or person shall use any waters in LAKE ARROWHEAD in any manner which would be in violation of the rules and regulations with respect to the use thereof promulgated as hereinafter provided. Such rules and regulations may place restrictions upon the speed of boats and vessels in all or any part of such waters and upon the size and types of boats and vessels permitted to navigate in such waters or any part thereof, may regulate or prohibit anchorage in all or any part of said waters, may regulate or prohibit water skiing, skin diving, swimming and fishing in all or any part of such waters, and the use thereof by aircraft, and may impose such other rules and regulations for the safety, protection and enjoyment of said waters as may from time to time be deemed necessary or desirable. Proof of liability insurance with limits not less than $300,000 is required for all motorized boats. All items in Dry Storage MUST display the current decal to continue using Lake Arrowhead Dry Storage. The tornado warning siren will normally only activate when a tornado has been spotted or confirmed to be in the area, not for severe or bad weather. Cherokee County only has 58 siren sites; they do not cover the entire county. Most homes and buildings are designed to keep sounds out, thus outdoor warning sirens are most useful for alerting people who are outside their home, in parks, or shopping areas. While outdoor sirens are an important part of the overall warning system, they should never be considered your primary means of receiving tornado warnings at home or work. Make sure you have at least two ways to receive a warning. NOAA All Hazards Radio is the best way to receive a warning and the details associated with that warning (especially overnight).. Code Red, what is? As you know we have outdoor sirens that are to be heard only for the outside, after speaking to the Cherokee County Emergency center they advised to use Code Red and also the NOAA All Hazards Radio.

The Mystery of Mrs. Christie – Marie Benedict. Naperville, IL: Sourcebooks, 2021.
Of the 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections penned by Agatha Christie during her long career, no mystery has been more perplexing than her own disappearance in December 1926. For eleven days, all of England seemed to partake in the search for her. The only facts known were these: On a Friday evening, she leaves her home in Berkshire, England supposedly to visit friends for the weekend. The next morning her car was found on a steep slope beside a deep pond, her coat and luggage still in the back seat. Left behind at her home were her 7-year-old daughter, Rosalind, the child’s nanny, and Agatha’s husband Archibald (known as Archie) who immediately became the prime suspect. Marie Benedict uses these few facts to craft her story, much as she did with her other best sellers (The Only Woman in the Room and Carnegie’s Maid, among others). At this point in Christie’s career, she was still a fledgling writer – a pursuit that her husband considered beneath their station in life. Benedict uses this perspective into their life to build her narrative. The Christie’s marriage was a classic World War I romance: Archie was a dashing pilot in Brittan’s Flying Corp and Agatha a hospital nurse. But ten years into their marriage, he is carrying on an affair and she is struggling to hold the family together. Unlike the strong central characters in her books, the feisty Miss Marple or the vain Hercule Poirot who solves mysteries using his “little gray cells,” Agatha is characterized as an insecure woman who believes that a woman’s duty is total devotion to her husband. (Thank you, Mumsy.) The story shifts between time periods, beginning with the couple’s first meeting and building up to the current investigation into Agatha’s disappearance. Benedict frames the story with a letter, supposedly written by Agatha to Archie, telling him every step he must take

over the coming days. “Only by following my directions at each crossroad in this journey will be story end well for us all,” she warns him. This letter helps pull the reader forward throughout the investigation of her disappearance as it gives insight lacking to the police who launch the largest manhunt England had ever seen, with thousands of volunteers mobilized for what was called The Great Sunday Hunt. But what are the steps dictated in the letter that Archie must take? Like any good mystery writer, Benedict doesn’t reveal these until the end. Also, like any good women’s fiction story, Archie is outed for the louse that he is. Just as she did in The Only Woman in the Room (which gives insights into the brilliant mind of screen star Hedy Lamarr), The Mystery of Mrs. Christie shows how limiting a woman’s life can be when social mores shackle her ambitions. “Agatha was that rare example of a woman who used her skill, talent and moxie to escape from the confines of her era – with the limitations it placed on women – and wrest control of her life,” writes Benedict in the Author Notes. “So instead of writing a forgotten woman back into history, this book explores one strong woman’s successful endeavor to take her history into her own hands and write herself back into the narrative.” MY WINE RECOMMENDATION During the 1920’s champagne was the drink of choice among the gentry. While that would have meant a French brute for Mrs. Christie’s table, today she might choose a bubbly from the UK. A Platinum and Best in Show in a recent international wine competition went to Roebuck Estate near Petworth for its Classic Cuvée Brut 2014. Judges hailed its flavors of “baked apple, buttered toast and layered citrus fruits” which sounds like a delightful addition to a proper English afternoon tea. $40
