golf news 3 KINGS SCRAMBLE RECAP On Saturday, December 12, 51 golfers (divided into 17, three-person teams) played in Lake Arrowhead’s ninth annual 3 Kings Golf Tournament. Each player brought an unwrapped toy to be donated to MUST Ministries in Canton. The field consisted of 3 person teams playing a traditional scramble format. NEWS FROM THE MGA (Lake Arrowhead Men’s Golf Association) from Pat Farrelly, 2021 MGA Board President The LAMGA would like to welcome all new residents to this wonderful community we call home. Like myself, many of us have moved to Lake Arrowhead, from all over this great country, as a retirement, vacation or 2nd home destination, escape from the cold, high taxes or to be near our children/ grandchildren. The amenities and security offered by Lake Arrowhead, I believe, can’t be matched anywhere. Gated Community, low HOA’s, 24/7 Security, 2 pools, tennis, 2 beautiful lakes, mountain views, and, last but not least, GOLF. GOLF - it’s what a lot of us live for an d one of the many reasons we moved here. It’s our passion, our way of communicating with the rest of the community and to stay active and mobile. To play like Arnie or Jack or Tiger, at least in our own minds.

That brings me to the Lake Arrowhead Men’s Golf Association. We are 80-90 Members strong, ages mid 30’s

to the mid 80’s, with handicaps from 0 to 30, dedicated to the playing and support of the game of golf. We are very active in support of The KBD Foundation, Angel House, Homeless Veterans, Golfing for Children and Must Ministries charities, as well as, Reinhardt University located right here in Waleska. We play every Wednesday and Saturday in our “Dogfight”, where talent is not necessarily the focus.

We have tournaments every month, in 2 and 3-man team formats, and quarterly members meetings.

That being said, I extend to anyone, new or a long time resident looking to find someone to play golf with, an invitation to come try us out. Come join us in our “Dogfight” and meet your friends and neighbors. We would like to meet you.

ANNUAL LALGA DINNER MEETING AND AWARDS The LALGA held its annual End of the Year Member Meeting /Dinner and awards ceremony on Wednesday, Nov 11, 2020. With faces masked and sitting 6 ft apart, we enjoyed a yummy dinner together and then began our Meeting Agenda to review the golfing results of 2020 events, plans for 2021 and election of officers for the 2021 board.

The dining room was beautifully decorated by Grace Kreft and Mindy McCutcheon with a special presentation of Grace’s lovely hand painted flower pictures and many colorful table arrangements. These were raffled off and everyone went home with something beautiful!

Additionally, many ladies were acknowledged and honored for their golfing accomplishments over this ‘very different’ year 2020 to include: (left) Play Days Winners Roz Waldron, Tommy Simmons & Arra Bolding (right) Ringer Board Individual play hole-over-hole improvements Lynn DeWolf, Patti Adams & Paula Hall (left) Birdie Tree Winners – Lynn De Wolfe & Eleanor Gibbons and Pam Glasgow (not present) AND we added another Lady to the HOLE-IN-ONE Plaque! – Lois Olson The LALGA also has community concerns and philanthropic interests. Every year we nominate and vote on a charity to support via a spring tournament in conjunction with the LA Men’s Golf Association. We wholeheartedly voted to support Angel House again and hopefully this year we will be able to host this important tournament. Look for more information on this planned event soon.

Our meeting ended with the 2021 Board election results. The current board was nominated and approved and has agreed to stay on for another 2 years. They are: President – Jan Garbiel, VicePresident – Cindy Rincon, Secretary – Joan Eberhardt, Treasurer – Paula Hall

club business MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events.

FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore.

ANYONE DAMAGING PROPERTY OR VIOLATING PARK RULES WILL BE BANNED.

PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind.

BOAT REGISTRATION Boat registration forms may be downloaded from the website at lakearrowheadclub.net. Proof of liability insurance with limits not less than $300,000 is required for all motorized boats.

Please mail a boat registration form and insurance to: LAYCC 486 Arrowridge Waleska, GA 30183, email membership@ lakearrowheadga.com, use the property owner drop boxes located at both security gates, or bring your form to the South Gate and the Administration office.

ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion.

NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks.

All items in Dry Storage MUST display the current decal to continue using Lake Arrowhead Dry Storage. As a reminder, it is a violation of the covenants to park or store the following: boats, vehicles, trailers, campers, RVs, etc. on your property.

Agreements may be terminated at any time due to past due accounts.

NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks.

BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup.

PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks.

Park for use by member and guests only.

No lifeguard on duty - swim at your own risk.

Park closes at sunset. Use the facilities at your own risk.

No littering. No motorized vehicles. No fires.

No alcoholic beverages. No glass containers.

No loud music. No fishing. No pets of any kind allowed.

Children under 18 must be supervised by an adult.

NARROWS MARINA PARKING

Parking in the Narrows Marina parking lot is reserved for slip holders only. Slip holders are requested to park only one vehicle in the parking lot. Please car pool guests from Great Festival Park. Property owners in the Narrows should use Great Festival Park for any overflow parking.

PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY

When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.

I want to thank everyone for their patience during the road subgrade repairs completed along Lake Arrowhead and Chickasaw Dr. The project was delayed from July due to weather, and contractor commitments to GDOT. Because of this, the striping project will be delayed into 2021.

For any concerns or issues that a resident might have in regards to Lake Arrowhead, please use the 'Report An Issue' tool on the front page of the LAPOAGA website.

This feature will quickly get the issue to the correct managing supervisor. The Board also receives a copy through the general LAPOAGA Gmail inbox.

A new type of repair 'Soil Cement Stabilization' (SCS) was applied. A portion of the poor subgrade was dug out and replaced with soil cement and compacted, before the asphalt overlay patches were installed. This type of repair was brought to the attention of management by Board member Rod Sudbeck. Rod is a civil engineer, and is the liaison to the volunteer infrastructure committee.

The subgrade issues must be dealt with before applying a complete asphalt overlay of the main roads.

On a final note, due to the covid-19 virus, the quarterly POA membership meeting scheduled for Saturday February 27th, 2021 will be held by electronic means, details to follow.

HMS/LAYCC informed the Board during budget discussions of 2 large overlay projects planned for 2021 and 2022. This will result in a complete asphalt overlay on the main road, from the south gate to the north gate, to be followed up with a road striping project.

Another project that was completed this year was the new playground equipment install. From what I have witnessed the kids are loving it! More phases of the project, such as sidewalks and benches, trees should be coming in the future.

I want to pass along my thanks to members of the LACE group, Becky White, Pam DeVictor, Barbara Merridith, Cathy Baublitz, Frank Vroegop, Tony Williams and Jennifer Stein. They participated in one or more beautification projects this year at the north entrance and the north mailbox.

I also want to thank Brad Cook and his maintenance crew for helping out with the north mailbox plantings.A special thanks to Tony Williams and my wife Jennifer, for hanging Christmas decorations at the north and south entrances.

WHAT IS PROJECT LIFESAVER? Project Lifesaver Protects Wandering Patients and Gives Piece of Mind to Caregivers, Families and Communities.

Project Lifesaver is an innovative and rapidly growing program aiding the victims and families suffering with Alzheimer’s Disease and related disorders such as Down’s Syndrome and Autism. Project Lifesaver uses state-of-theart technology employing wristband transmitters to locate wandering and lost adults and children.

Over 5,000,000 people in the USA have Alzheimer’s. That number will triple by 2050. Well over 50% of these people wander and become lost. A lost person with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementia represents a critical emergency as nearly half of them will die and many can become injured or fall victim to predators if they are not located within 24 hours. The number of people, families and communities experiencing this risk will grow dramatically in this decade.

If you are not yet touched in some way by Alzheimer’s Disease or related diseases, chances are you will be within the next several years. You will find it among neighbors, your friends, co-workers and their families, and perhaps within your own family.

HOW PROJECT LIFESAVER WORKS Project Lifesaver is much more than a passive ID bracelet.

It is an active system that relies on state-of-the-art technology and a specially trained search and rescue team of professionals. People who are enrolled in the program wear a personalized bracelet that emits a tracking signal.

When caregivers notify the Cherokee County E-911 Center that the person is missing, a search and rescue team responds to the wanderer’s area and starts searching with the mobile locater tracking system. Search times have been reduced from hours and days to minutes.

In hundreds of searches, there have been no reported serious injuries or deaths. Recovery times average less than 30 minutes.

The Project Lifesaver bracelet is a one-ounce batteryoperated radio wrist transmitter emitting an automatic tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day. The signal is tracked on the ground or in the air over several miles. As PAGE 18 | JANUARY // FEBRUARY 2021

each bracelet has a unique radio frequency, the Project Lifesaver search team positively locates and identifies the person who has wandered away.

TECHNOLOGY IS ONLY HALF THE STORY Members of the Project Lifesaver team are specially trained, not only in the use of the electronic tracking equipment, but especially in the methods to communicate with a person who has Alzheimer’s Disease or related disorders. Locating the individual is only part of the mission. The person who has been located will be disoriented, anxious, and untrusting. The Project Lifesaver team knows how to approach the person, gain their trust and put them at ease for the trip back home.

Educational and community awareness programs have been a cornerstone to Project Lifesaver’s success. The Cherokee County Project Lifesaver team members are also active in presenting information to civic groups, community clubs, and various healthcare providers throughout their communities.

HOW PROJECT LIFESAVER SAVES LIVES AND COMMUNITY RESOURCES In Pittsylvania County, Virginia a 45 year-old man suffering from atraumatic brain injury became lost and disoriented.

A deputy sheriff specially trained used the special tracking receiver and was able to locate the missing man 1.5 miles from his home within 20 minutes. A traditional search without Project Lifesaver would have normally involved the time (and expense to the tax-payers) of 9224 man hours and up to 264 searchers without the special tracking system.

In Chatham, Virginia an 80 year-old woman with Alzheimer’s Disease wandered from her home at night.

The family contacted Project Lifesaver upon learning she was missing. Two Sheriff’s vehicles equipped with Project Lifesaver Emergency Responder Units arrived on the scene and within a short time located the woman lying in a tobacco field and injured. Rescuers reported that a person standing up to 10 feet away from the injured woman would not have noticed that she was lying there.

The woman was helpless and could have died if not located by Project Lifesaver.

A 79 year-old man with Alzheimer’s Disease left his house in Virginia Beach driving his truck. He became lost and could not find his way back home. After searching the neighborhood, a police helicopter was called in with a Project Lifesaver team member and equipment. In just 35 minutes, the helicopter located the man using the signal transmitted from his Project Lifesaver bracelet. He was found 14 miles from his home. Before he became a part of the Project Lifesaver program, he wandered off and was missing for 2 1/2 days.

Project Lifesaver is endorsed by the National Sheriff’s Association. Hundreds of communities across the U.S. have now adopted Project Lifesaver to locate those residents who may wander away from familiar surroundings. People with Alzheimer’s Disease, Autism, Dementia, Down Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, Soto Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, traumatic brain injuries or other conditions that cause wandering issues are potential candidates for Project Lifesaver.

Who’s the strongest and mightiest beast in all the forest? In Brian Doyle’s charming book, it’s the pine marten – a small, agile weasel-like creature with a white face, a bushy tail and retractable claws found mainly in northern mature forests. In this coming-of-age story, the marten’s territory is Oregon’s Mt. Hood along the Zigzag River, close to a settlement where fourteen-year-old Dave lives with his parents and his six-year-old sister, Marie. Boy and creature meet one summer day when Dave is running mountain trails, hoping to make the high school cross-country team in the fall. The two adolescents spy one another through the canopy of trees, and a story is born.

For readers wanting an endearing book for reading on a cold winter day beside a roaring fire or for sharing with a teen, Martin Marten is that book. As the author follows the marten from its birth through living with its mom and siblings, learning to hunt, and getting in territorial scraps with other forest creatures, Dave is followed as he begins to stretch his legs, so to speak, transitioning from boy to teen to young adult.

Set in contemporary times, Doyle anchors the story in that glorious period in a young person’s life before it becomes ruled by electronic gadgets. Just like the marten high in the trees, Dave knows his surroundings. “Snow comes fast, temperature drops fast, rain turns to ice fast, rivers burst their banks fast. Know where you are,” advises his dad, “and you’re a free man with your time.” Dave takes full advantage of this advice, as does Martin. Both explore their territories, learning who to approach and what to avoid.

Peopling the story along with Dave and his family are enduring, eccentric characters: Miss Moss, the storekeeper who hires Dave for parttime work; Dick Douglas, the trapper who secretly loves Miss Moss; Cosmas, the crazed mountain biker who is an orange blur on the trails; Dave’s best friend Moon. a nerdy latchkey kid whose parents are tech executives; Emma Jackson, the morning waitress at the lodge who may, or may not, be married to a famous surfer; and Mr. Shapiro, everyone’s favorite teacher. Dave and Martin’s stories weave in and around their stories, creating a tapestry of a close-knit community of people who feel most at home when surrounded by nature. By the end of the book, all

these people are gathered in a mountain meadow to celebrate a non-wedding. “This ceremony is about all of us,” Dave’s mother says. “We are bound to each other. We don’t have to like each other, but we do have to attend each other.”

Being at one with the natural world is at the heart of Martin Marten. Throughout the story, the need to be respectful of nature is emphasized again and again. “We’re just mammals with attitude,” trapper Dick tells Dave. “The whole point of our evolution is for us to find a way to fit back into the world as it is, rather than try to remake the world to fit us.”

High above the meadow in a tree with a good view is Martin Marten. He watches over the humans, especially Dave, before he slips back to den in a hollow space in an old tree. “Maybe,” muses the narrator, “we will be better human beings when we begin to see all the other things a place is besides all the things we think it is or wanted it to be.”
