golf news DUNCAN AND DUNCAN WIN THE 2020 MEMBER-GUEST TOURNAMENT After two days of golf and a sudden death shootout among flight winners, Andrew Duncan and his Son, Ryan Duncan, won this year’s Member-Guest Tournament. After shooting a net 66 (6 under par) on Saturday, they followed up with a net 69.2 on Sunday to win their flight. This put them into a sudden death shootout with four other flight winners to determine the Tournament Champions. Andrew and Ryan won a chip off on the 18th hole over Bill Maynard and Lee Graham to claim the championship. But this was just part of the Member-Guest story line. Tournament festivities actually began at 2 pm on Friday, October 2, with an optional 9-hole skins game. Official Tournament activities began the next day with an 18 hole best ball competition and a formal dinner. Activities concluded on Sunday with an 18 hole scramble, lunch, and the shootout. The competition in all the flights was close and the food prepared by the Club was outstanding! The general consensus of the participants (members and guests alike) was that this was truly an outstanding event. Overall 28 member-guest teams played this year. Prior to the Tournament, the Club’s professional staff divided the teams into flights according to their combined handicaps. This helps to ensure that the teams were evenly matched during the competition. Do you remember the Old saying “Third time is the Charm”? Well, for the LGA September Play Event that was the case. Scheduled for September 17th, the day was a total washout due to the remnants of Hurricane Sally. So, we decided to reschedule for the following Thursday, September 24th. This time is was a major washout due to Tropical Storm Beta. Determined to get in this Play Event, we moved it to Monday September 28th and had a beautiful sunny day to play one of our more fun formats…” The Pin Ball Format”. What you ask is that? This is a game of individual scoring for 9 holes. Each lady receives a PINK ball to use for the 9-hole play. If they lose their PINK ball, they continue playing with another color ball. Prizes were awarded to the top three scores and to those that retain their PINK ball. Our theme for the day was “Tie-Dyed for Golf” and our Social Chairs made sure that we were decked out in tie-dyed face masks for our day of play. A few of the ladies went so far as to wear tie-dyed outfits while others were wearing PINK in recognition of the format. Needless to say, it was an afternoon of fun after a couple of weeks of rain but a challenge to hang on to that PINK ball. The year is winding down for our league. We have our last Play Event October 16th, which will be an LGA/MGA 9 & Dine. The theme for this event will be “Sadie Hawkins Golf” and costumes are encouraged. Let’s hope this beautiful fall weather holds and out and our LGA and MGA player have a great fun.

The LGA Board is currently working on plans for our Fall Business Meeting scheduled November 11th. We will be electing new officers and planning for next year’s events. Covid 19 has taken its toll on our league this year with fewer members and events. We hope that we are turning the corner and that our former members will return and that we can add new members to our roster. The LGA Board hopes that we can entice the lady golfers in the community to consider becoming a member of our league. We are a fun group of all levels of lady golfers and we’d like to share our group with you. Membership forms are available at the clubhouse.

club business Dear Dry Storage Occupant, It’s that time of year again to renew your Dry Storage contract. The 2021 Dry Storage fee is $540.00. The due date is Tuesday, December 15, 2020 for contracts and full payment. If your payment and completed contract have not been received by the 25th, you will receive a $50 late fee. Dry Storage decals will be mailed in January upon receipt of full payment and completed contract. Contracts will be mailed to Property Owners. Boat registration information will be available in February, 2021. Forms may be downloaded from our website at Lakearrowheadclub.net. All items in Dry Storage MUST display the current decal to continue using Lake Arrowhead Dry Storage. Your contract will not be renewed and your space will be given to the next on the list. To RENEW your DRY STORAGE contract for 2021: We must receive both a signed, completed contract and payment. We must receive payment of $540 per space before the due date to avoid late fee. club business MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events. FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore.

PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind.
BOAT REGISTRATION Boat registration forms may be downloaded from the website at lakearrowheadclub.net. Proof of liability insurance with limits not less than $300,000 is required for all motorized boats. Please mail a boat registration form and insurance to: LAYCC 486 Arrowridge Waleska, GA 30183, email membership@ lakearrowheadga.com, use the property owner drop boxes located at both security gates, or bring your form to the South Gate and the Administration office.
ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks.

NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks.
Park for use by member and guests only. No lifeguard on duty - swim at your own risk. Park closes at sunset. Use the facilities at your own risk. No littering. No motorized vehicles. No fires. No alcoholic beverages. No glass containers. No loud music. No fishing. No pets of any kind allowed. Children under 18 must be supervised by an adult.
NARROWS MARINA PARKING
Parking in the Narrows Marina parking lot is reserved for slip holders only. Slip holders are requested to park only one vehicle in the parking lot. Please car pool guests from Great Festival Park. Property owners in the Narrows should use Great Festival Park for any overflow parking.
PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

The four new permanent Pickleball Courts at the newly renovated Sport Court at Red Cloud Park are an instant success for the groups of Lake Arrowhead players. Our beginner level open-play group immediately filled the new courts with excitement and fun!!! The experienced open-play group reacted with similar positive emotions. The Sport Court’s genesis arose out of a 2019 meeting among Johnson Development Company’s Larry Johnson and Steve Roe with LAPOA Board President Maury Nunes. Larry Johnson graciously agreed that JDC would renovate the previously abandoned tennis courts at Red Cloud Park . The same meeting yielded JDC’s investment in building the Fishing Pier on Lake Arrowhead,, the Fishing Pad at Lake Chickasaw, the coming Kayak Launch on Lake Arrowhead and arrangements for the 25 new boat slips at the Pavilion. These are welcome amenities and Larry and Steve deserve great credit for recognizing the needs of Lake Arrowhead’s growing population.

Once the renovation was authorized, Lake Arrowhead’s Bill Hess, Lake Arrowhead’s “Pickleball Ambassador” worked closely with James Haslam of HMS Golf and Steve Roe in planning for the new facility. In addition to the four Pickleball Courts, there is a half-basketball Court and a children’s play area that will be stenciled for standard games like hopscotch and include substantial chalkable space. Pickleball is the fasting growing sport not only in the world, but also here in Lake Arrowhead with more than 50 active players. Our groups play at all levels and welcome new players. Beginner level play is on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday/ Saturday evenings, while experienced level play is on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday late afternoons into early evening. Again, while we did not always agree, at all times there was mutual respect for our differing positions arising from different needs and perspectives. In the grand scheme of things, most of the time our coinciding interests proved paramount in reaching compromises that permitted progress toward these achievements.
The newly elected Board, with President John Stein, has hit the ground running and I am super-confident they will build on the achievements of the last four years as we built on the work of prior Boards headed by Tony Rogowski, Ward Brimmer, Roger Akers, Joe Love and others. Lake Arrowhead is a special place, a special home and I think the closest thing to paradise on Earth. Again, thank you, Property Owners, for the opportunity to work to preserve, protect and improve this wonderful community.

Alysha at Last – Uzma Jalaluddin. New York: Berkley, 2018. No one writes about social conventions quite like Jane Austin. In her six novels set in the middle to upper class world of the Hampshire countryside where she lived, she wrote about the stodginess of British society with wit and understanding of the manners and etiquette of her day, creating memorable characters who have global appeal. As critic John F. Burrows put it, “her legacy as one of the greatest writers boils down to her economy of description, her customary formality of tone, her subtle mingling of styles, and her creation of so smooth a surface that every ripple repays our attention.” It is no wonder, then, that modern writers model Austin’s writing style in movies (like “Clueless” based on Emma) and books ( my favorite, Bridget Jones’s Diary), overlaying Austin’s distinct voice to stories about contemporary life. Author Uzma Jalaluddin’s novel, set in modern-day Toronto, paraphrases the famous opening line of Pride and Prejudice to set up her tale of an attraction between opposites: “While it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single Muslim man must be in want of a wife, there’s an even greater truth: To his Indian mother, his own inclinations are of secondary importance.” The “Mr. Darcy” in Jalaluddin’s story is Khalid, a conservative Muslim who not only closely practices his religious principles, wearing his white robes and beard like a “security blanket,” but who firmly believes that ‘mama knows best’ when it comes to finding him a proper wife. The Elizabeth Bennet in his life is Ayesha, an educated, outspoken substitute teacher who believes that a woman can be a faithful follower of her faith (she wears hijabs) while also living an independent life. (She’s still single at 27. Gasp!) Sparks fly when the two meet. He judges her to be improper for drinking at a bar; she labels him a fundamentalist because of his skull cap and disdainful manner toward others. In typical Austin fashion, these close encounters pile up more and more misunderstandings, propelling the story forward. Like Darcy and Elizabeth, both Khalid and Ayesha have their flaws. His ultra-conservatism and ideology force him to conform so closely to community expectations that his true self has little room to breathe, much like a 19th century corset would constrict the body. And while

Alysha is a more sympathetic character with her giving heart, love of poetry and willingness to help her family, she allows herself to be used by a selfish cousin who collects marriage proposals for sport, reminding the reader of the flirtatious nature of the younger Bennet sisters. The strength of the book lies in its rich depiction of a thriving Muslim community. Rather than relying on stereotypes, Jalaluddin develops all her characters, both major and minor, with thought and depth. Each one has a unique voice which allows the reader to feel a part of the community. The romance between Khalid and Ayesha builds gently, and the author borrows another trope from a British author, using a mistaken identity twist that feels straight out of a Shakespeare comedy. With its blend of humor, heartbreak, and, of course, a happy ending, Alysha at Last delivers a satisfying read, even for those who have never cracked the pages of P&P. MY WINE RECOMMENDATION Located in Wellington, Ontario, not far from Toronto, is the Norman Hardie Winery. Norm did his training for wine making back in the 1980s at the University of Dijon and worked in the wine industry until 2003 when he opened his vineyard. Using French techniques and regional grapes, his wines have both an Old World and New World taste. For Khalid and Ayesha’s first date, I recommend a traditional Indian curry paired with Norman Hardie Country Cabernet Franc. With its complex nose of blackberry, liquorice, bramble jelly and pepper, it would hold up excellently with the spicy goodness of a good curry. $30 Sarah Martin Jones is a former English teacher and author of Quicksand: A Cautionary Love Story.
