M E E T T H E C A N D I D AT E S ROBERT BECK 109 Ponderosa Lane My name is Robert Beck, my wife Malgorzata and I moved to Lake Arrowhead in March of 2020 and fell in love. I have been in the Marine Corps for over 18 years and lived all over the world and honestly could not have asked for a better place to retire. I am currently stationed in Marietta on Dobbins Air Force Base. This will be my last duty station and I couldn't be

happier that we chose to live in such an amazing community. I have two daughters Madisyn 13 and Riley 11, and two dogs Dayzee and Zoey. I am interested in this position to do my part in helping Lake Arrowhead thrive and ensure the Homeowners are heard. My family and I want the best for this community and serving on the Board is one way to help make this happen. I feel that my experience in the Marine Corps has given me the ability to successfully hold this position and possibly bring a slightly different view that will benefit Lake Arrowhead. This is my home and just like any of you I want what's best for Lake Arrowhead's future. I have always gave 100% in my career and promise to do the same for you!

LAPOA news KRISTINE BRADFORD My name is Kristine Bradford and I am originally from a small-town called Dayton, Minnesota. I moved to Dallas, GA in late 2005 then Cherokee County in late 2015 and met my soon to be husband Chris who was living in Lake Arrowhead. We moved away for a few years and just recently moved back to our oasis that we missed so much. I have three children named Ellie, Morgan and Nick along with our pup’s Tucker and Charlie. I was raised to be fair and honest and still uphold my beliefs. For many years I have done volunteer work starting with my local church, then City Hall where we cleaned up local parks. I volunteered at my kid’s schools and even was a room mom. In high school I was active in concert, marching and jazz band playing trumpet and baritone.

DAVID LYCHENHEIM 1018 Lake Arrowhead Drive A little about me: My wife and I moved to Georgia two years ago to be closer to our daughter who lives in White, Georgia. We now have two grand kids to spoil. I retired in 2004 after a long career with Lockheed Martin as a Aerospace Engineer supporting the Hubble Space Telescope Project at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. My wife Liz of 42 years worked in Washington, D.C. as a legal assistant for several International Law firms. My wife Liz and I both grew up overseas and have traveled extensively. My latest passion is wildlife photography. Our latest getaway location is Kruger National Park in South Africa where we enjoy exploring and photographing the amazing wildlife.

My first job was as secretary for my local City Hall. I would answer calls, make copies of plots for residents and communicate with the joint police and fire station. Later, I went on to work as a contracted security officer for a DOD company, and then office managers for multiple construction companies. I would look for new opportunities, serve as HR/Payroll, visit and supervise jobsites. Even worked customer service for a local flooring company where I performed scheduling and order writing for apartments and a local home builder. I have handled different kinds of conflict and whether I need to get answers or help, I always get back in a timely fashion. I am very customer service driven. Today I am keeping house and spending time with my husband and our pup’s. I enjoy taking photos, listening to music, visiting family and friends, and when it gets cooler, walking. My belief is to be transparent, listen, be understanding and objective. My passion is to give back and always make a positive difference where I can. I have always wanted to join a board so I can serve the community that I love and proud to be part of.

Pertinent Experience: While living in Maryland I participated for more than 20 years on a 654 townhouse Homeowners Association (HOA) Board of Directors. I held almost every position on this association board. One of our biggest challenge was the transfer of builder common property to the HOA. This process took lots of investigation and good common sense to ensure our success. The other main challenge was to properly craft the architectural guidelines so that, if necessary, they would hold up in court should we be challenged by a homeowner. We made sure that all processes were strictly followed for each and every homeowner. Our careful crafting of the guidelines and associated processes were time well spent and kept us out of unnecessary lawsuits. Open and frequent communication with the homeowners is vital to the success of any community. I think my experience over those 20+ years can benefit Lake Arrowhead. I would be honored to participate as a member of the Lake Arrowhead Board.

LAPOA news EILEEN OBERG 105 Thunder Hawk Loop I moved to Georgia in 2012 after my husband’s passing. After several years in metro Atlanta I discovered Lake Arrowhead in 2016 and immediately knew it was to be my home.

JEFF SCHWARTZ 327 Lakewood Drive I have lived in Lake Arrowhead since 2015, where my wife and I built the home of our dreams, and retired from my own business just this year, which gives me the opportunity to now become actively involved in this community. I have always been devoted to the communities of which I’ve been a part. As a young father, I left a successful career to be a stay-at-home dad to my three young children, and give them the value of my presence. They were my community, and I stepped up to new challenges: heading the local soccer, Little League and youth basketball leagues, the first community-based 5 year plan for our school board in what has become the top ranked district in Indiana, and immersive involvement with my kids daily growth. Later, when the children were grown and the opportunity arose to begin my own business, I spent 20+ years serving another community – my employees and clients. I made sure most employees had salaries higher than mine and everyone had completely employer paid benefits. I demonstrated

I love the beauty of both the property and the spirit of community that exists here. I have a degree in History and completed a program in Labor and Management Negotiations at University of California Davis and have experience as an Employment Resource Specialist. I’ve been active in the community since moving in and currently am the Chair of the Fundraising Committee. I am committed to Lake Arrowhead and its success as a wonderful environment to live, work and play.

uncompromising loyalty to their growth with respect to their pasts and their potential. I have loyal clients to this day, despite my retirement, and I help them, regardless of my status. This is important because I give my all to the communities of which I am a part, and I am ready to give my all to Lake Arrowhead. What you need to know about me: I value fairness above all else. I won’t automatically agree or disagree with a position: my history degree and journalism professor father ingrained in me that there are always multiple ways, solutions and paths that should be considered for the best of the community at large. At times, that may mean you disagree with me, and I respect that. But I’ll always tell it like I see it. I can listen well before I speak, but speak I will. I believe the recent iteration of our board has done a good job of creating a direction that helps improve our community for the homeowners and has developed a positive working relationship with our developers. While I haven’t always agreed with the decisions made, I believe that we need to continue to build on our most recent successes. This is who I am, and I look forward to the privilege of serving the entire Lake Arrowhead community.

LAPOA news JOHN STEIN 168 Corner Oak Ct Jennifer and I purchased our home in Lake Arrowhead in the spring of 2015, and moved to Lake Arrowhead full-time in 2018. Besides the beauty and serenity, the residents making up our community are the best part of living here. We value the many new found friendships. My past experience includes the following: • Retired military, US Navy, with 10 years active & 10 years Reserve time, 1980-2000 *Retired from Duke Energy 2018 after 27 years, 1991-2018 • Served on Alexandria Ky City Council 1996-2006. In that time I was influential in putting together the City's first park, Alexandria Community Park. • Served as the Council's Public Works Committee Chair • Served as Board President of the Bluffs HOA 2006-2013 • Invited by the 2017 LAPOA Board to provide input to discuss with Amicolola EMC, to increase the efficiency of Lake Arrowhead's electric distribution system. • Attended a LAPOA Board meeting with my neighbor to provide a cost effective option to replace some of our larger culvert pipe systems by a method referred to as "slip lining". The use of this method provided a cost savings of $500,000. Major thoroughfares within LA were able to remain open during the process. As you can see, I am a believer in getting involved in the community to make a difference. I was appointed to fill a vacancy on this Board early in 2020. I am currently the Board liaison for the Environmental Committee. I am a member of the Friends of Lake Arrowhead Trails (FOLAT) group. This group works closely with LAYCC management in improving our trail systems. We now have approximately 10 miles of trails. We are currently working with management to add new trails.

I'm also a member of the Lake Arrowhead Community Enhancement (LACE) group. This group takes on projects in conjunction with management to add value to our community. One of the first projects was to clean up the north gate entrance by adding flowers and shrubs to soften up the appearance. The current Board is keenly aware of most of the challenges that face our community, and has been working hard with the Declarant and LAYCC/HMS to resolve them. I'm not going to make a bunch of promises, but if elected I will always do what's in the best interests of the community as a whole. I would appreciate your vote in October.

LAPOA news FLIP VARNEY 173 Arrowridge My name is Flip Varney and I am honored to be considered to serve as a member of the Lake Arrowhead Property Owner's Association (LAPOA). Over the years, my wife and I have been members of several Homeowner or Property Owner's Associations and feel the role a board member plays is of vital importance. Before asking for your support by electing me to serve on your board, I would like to tell you a little about myself. I was born in Williamson, West Virginia in 1953 as the youngest of three children. After graduation from High School, I enlisted in the U.S. Army where I proudly served for 4 years as a Military Policeman. I hold degrees from Southern West Virginia Community College and King University. In addition, I also earned professional accreditation from University of Georgia's Terry College of Business in Financial Planning. My wife, Brenda and I, are proud parents of four adult children, Jessica, Sara, Matthew and Rob, grandparents to Trenton and Mason, as well as the human parents of our miniature labradoodle, Rosalita. We are both still actively employed, Brenda in the biotech industry, while I am in the financial services industry. Prior to making Lake Arrowhead our home, we most recently lived in the Williams Park community of Smyrna, GA. Over the past 20 years, our professional lives have taken us to Blairsville, GA, Valdosta, GA and Panama City Beach, FL. We are very pleased and blessed to consider Lake Arrowhead our final residential location. As your representative on the LAPOA board, I pledge to always serve with your best interest in mind. As our community continues to grow, it is vitally important to have board members dedicated to that growth while preserving the atmosphere that makes Lake Arrowhead one of the premier locations to live.

golf news 2020 POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP On Saturday September 26, Chris Benway defeated Brian Schell on the last hole to win the 11th annual Points Championship. This event, which is possibly the most unique and pressure packed tournament of the year. According to the tournament rules, all ten players start at the same time, on the same hole. At the end of each hole, the golfer with the highest score is eliminated from the tournament. If two players tie with the highest score, a chip off is held to determine who advances. The closest to the hole continues unless there are 3 or more players in the chip off. In that case, the player that is farthest from the hole is eliminated. This process continues for nine holes until only one golfer remains. Golf members earn points throughout the year by playing in Club sponsored golf tournaments. They receive 10 points for participating in a tournament but can earn more by winning or finishing at least fourth in a tournament. Ten members qualify to play in the Points Championship. These qualifiers are pictured below. The format of the Points Championship, known specifically as a “nine hole shoot out” brings a different type of pressure than any other played in Lake Arrowhead. It is, for example, the only one where a high score on a hole can result in elimination from the tournament. In addition, it is the only tournament where family and friends follow along to cheer on their favorite participants. This adds a little extra excitement and pressure for the golfers in that almost every shot draws some type of vocal response from the crowd. For many of us, these pressures tend to turn our brains into mush, particularly in the early holes where elimination is disappointing. The first hole saw Mel Standley eliminated. Suzie Champitto had the highest score on the 11th hole. Hole 12 got last year’s champion, Brad Jones. The 13th hole was the end of Pat Farrelly’s run. The 14th hole saw the elimination of Eleanor Gibbons in the first chip off. Pam Glasgow was the odd player out on hole 15. Hole 16, Sean Webb was eliminated in a chip off. Mike Johnson was knocked out on the 17th hole in a chip off. Chris Benway won the final hole and championship with a solid par, net birdie, on 18 over Brian Schell! Thanks to Golf Professionals Uel Kemp and Kevin Aines and the rest of the club staff for all their hard work. It was a great tournament.

6th Annual Homeless Veteran Charity Golf Event set for Friday October 23rd at Lake Arrowhead Highlands Course

The 6th annual Charity Homeless Veterans Golf Outing is set for this fall at the Lake Arrowhead Highlands Golf Course in Waleska, Ga. The shotgun start event will be held on Friday the 23rd of October and will have a 4 person team scramble format. The event is put on by the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans program (CCHVP) with support from local veterans and volunteers. 100% of the proceeds of the golf outing goes to support the various programs of the CCHVP and 100% of the monies spent by the CCVHP stays in Cherokee County. Homeless Veteran Situation in Georgia today— In last November’s Housing and Urban Development report to Congress, the State of Georgia was identified as lagging in several areas as it relates to Homeless Veterans to include: 



State of Georgia ranks 3rd among states for the largest number of homeless veterans in the Balance of State homeless areas (rural areas which make us 152 of the 158 counties in Georgia) State of Georgia ranks 3rd behind Hawaii and Oregon with the highest rate of unsheltered homeless veterans in the nation. Georgia has a 63.1% rate of unsheltered vs sheltered homeless veterans within the Balance of State Continuum of Care (COC).



Cherokee County ranks #2 in total homeless persons in the Balance of State. Bibb County ranks #1.



In 2019 we processed 90 homeless Veterans, male//female/ families.



Cherokee County does not qualify for VASH or Per Diem housing support for Veterans. We do qualify for SSVF Grants for Veterans with families with children under 17. It typically takes up to 12 weeks to get into the SSVF program.

This year, as part of the Cherokee County Homeless Veteran Golf Program (CCHVP) golf event and in celebration of Veterans Day, we are looking to fill this ridge with signs commemorating a loved one, living or deceased, Veteran or non-Veteran. We are creating a special sign that you can customize with up to three lines of 22 characters for creating a personalized message. In addition there is a logo space that can be added that can identify the organization that your loved one was part of. If your loved one is/was a Veteran this logo field can represent the branch of service where your loved one served, i.e. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, WWII Army Air Corps, etc.

Signs are 24”x18” in size and come with an H-stand for inserting the sign into the ground. The signs are made of weatherproof plastic so that they are designed to be placed outside. Printed areas are only done on one side of the sign.

BEACH BLANKET BINGO If you are accustomed to reading the LALGA “In the Rough” articles you have realized that we like to have fun with our golf. Our play event each month always has a theme with a a fun play format. In August, our thoughts were to take a virtual trip to the beach and play some golftrying to avoid the sand and the water on this trip. The format for the day was Bingo Bango Bongo and if you aren’t familiar with this format, the rules are simple. On each hole, there are three ways to earn points: Bingo: The first player in the team to get the ball on the green Bango: The team whose ball is closest to the pin once all balls are on green Bongo: The player in the team who is first to hole out

club business MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events. FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks.

community interest READING BETWEEN THE WINES

The Dutch House – Ann Patchett. New York: HarperCollins, 2019. “Do you ever think it is possible to see the past as it actually is?” That’s the essential question at the heart of Ann Patchett’s latest novel. It’s the question constantly mulled over by the narrator of the novel, Danny, a middle-aged, real estate entrepreneur living in New York City with his wife and two children, when he reflects on his childhood. It is a question he frequently discusses with his older sister, Maeve, who essentially raised him from the age of four following their mother’s desertion of the family. (It was their ornate house, complete with ballroom on the third floor that her mother could not stand, as if that makes it any better.) It is a question that frames this novel, named after the ‘Dutch House’ in suburban Philadelphia, where Danny and Maeve lived until they were until they were coldly disinherited and exiled by Andrea, their stepmother, following the death of their father. Patchett’s books asks of the reader: Can a person ever move past a time and place that defined all that is right and good, yet evil and spiteful, but also loving and nurturing in one’s life? The Dutch House is, in fact, more a character in Patchett’s book than either the mother, stepmother or father. Call it a love triangle story (brother, sister, house) cast as a modern fairy tale (think Hansel and Gretel) with a wicked stepmother (like Cinderella) who enters their life with two daughters of her own, booting the Little Princess out of her own room. And like Paradise Lost, a more somber fairytale, the two castaways long for what they had lost especially as they sit year after year in Maeve’s car, smoking cigarettes, while gazing at what is no longer theirs across the street. It is a novel about obsessive nostalgia, which may not immediately seem like an entertaining read, but in Patchett’s capable hands The Dutch House may well be her best and most satisfying novel. Danny loves his sister – her beauty, her fierceness, her brilliance, her honesty. And she, in turn, cares deeply for him. Their closeness makes other relationships difficult, but it is a tight bond that is admirable, even enviable.

As the years past, their lives move forward – Maeve managing finances for a food distributor, Danny graduating from medical school and following his passion for real estate, a passion he inherited from his father. But the story is less about their day-to-day lives and more about how they struggle as adults to free themselves from their pasts. In these monthly conversations outside the Dutch House, Maeve seems to wear her longing for her absent mother and hatred for her stepmother like a “prized blue ribbon”. Meanwhile Danny, having no memory of his mother’s desertion and not so much hatred as disregard for his stepmother, realizes that a person must eventually let go of the past. “We had made a fetish out of our misfortune,” he concludes after twenty years, “we had fallen in love with it.” By dividing the book into three parts, Patchett helps the reader unpack her story bit by bit, understanding that the past, the present and the future are all a part of the same continuum. “We overlay the present on the past,” Danny concludes. “We look back through the lens of what we know now, so we’re not seeing it in the same people we were, we are seeing it as the people we are, and that means the past has been progressively re-interpreted.” One of the minor characters, the children’s housekeeper, explains this phenomenon best: “The way we were then, we were all so young. We were still our best selves.” Towards the end of the book, Danny states, “The story of my sister was the only one I was ever meant to tell.”. With Patchett as his ghost writer, he does it exceedingly well.
