1. The maximum number of people at the Red Cloud pool at a given time will be limited to 100 individuals. The Great Festival pool is planned to be limited to 60 people when opened. These limits will be reevaluated once the current Executive Order expires and/or is updated and we gauge actual pool usage. 2. Pool furniture will be spaced appropriately on the pool deck and we ask that you make every effort not to move furniture or to return it to its original location if movement is required. Please remember that this is for the safety of you and other homeowners! 3. A gate monitor will be in place at both pools once open to remind residents about and enforce social distancing, as well as provide interim cleaning of frequently touched surfaces. This is an unbudgeted additional expense for the Association, but currently legally required in order to “enforce” social distancing. This may change based on future changes in guidance from the State of Georgia. 4. Invited guests will be prohibited until the Association is able to increase the maximum number of people at the pool at a single point in time, or demand for pool time is such that allowing guests is deemed appropriate. 5. A reservation system is being implemented to allow usage to be as equitable as possible. The reservation system will initially limit bookings to one reserved time per day per address and four reservations per week. Reservations are planned to be for 2.5-hour blocks, followed by 30-minute closures to allow for homeowners to exit the pool prior to the new reservations entering, and also allow for interim cleaning. Times will be 10:30 AM – 1:00 PM; 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM; 4:30 PM – 7:00 PM.

Reservations for Red Cloud Pool are initially being limited to 100 individuals per 2 ½ hour reservation block, and reservations are limited to 1 reservation per day and 4 reservations per week. We expect these restrictions will be altered as attendance is gauged and restrictions change. Given the limitations on attendance, guests are not currently allowed. The pool is scheduled to open daily at 10:30 AM, will have 2 ½ hour reservation blocks followed by 30-minute transition and cleaning periods, and will close at 7:00 PM daily. This will be a different pool season with unique challenges, and we ask that each of you as homeowners be cognizant of the challenges in opening and operating pools this season, and help us and the pool staff in our efforts to provide a safe and fun environment for all homeowners!

2020 MEMBER – MEMBER On July 18th & 19th, 38 Lake Arrowhead golf members played in the 2020 Member – Member Golf Tournament. Always competitive, this year’s tournament was no exception. Bill Maynard and Craig Glasgow won the low gross score honors! Mike Johnson and Sandy Reynolds won the overall low net score. The Member – Member Golf Tournament is an annual event where golf club members form 2-person teams to compete for trophies and prizes plus the honor of being named Tournament Champions for the year. The tournament format is known by several names (four ball, best ball, and better ball) but whatever it is called, it essentially requires each team member to play their own ball. At the end of each hole, the lowest individual score is recorded as the team score. This year’s tournament was divided into 4 flights: First, Second, Third and Ladies. STARS AND STROKES by Jan Garbiel Well it finally happened. The Lake Arrowhead LGA had their first real play event for season. Nothing got in the way, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, the temperature was pleasant and the golf course was beautiful. Needless to say, we put the threat of Covid 19 to the back of our minds after thoroughly spraying and wiping down the carts with Lysol and trying for good social distancing. The theme for the event was “Stars and Strokes” in honor of Flag Day June 14th. Fifteen ladies came to play dressed the red, white and blue outfits and ready to decorate their carts for the event. It was an 18 Hole Two Person Scramble with pairings selected using playing cards. Scores were based on points for the following: Bogey=1 point, Par=2 points, Birdie=3 points and Eagle=4 points. Once paired, off we went to our starting hole for a day of birdies, pars and bogeys and maybe an even an eagle. After finishing play, we all headed to the club house for lunch. Chef John offered us a choice of a BBQ pulled pork or BBQ chicken sandwich with large salad and potato salad, baked beans or cole slaw. For dessert we

had warm pecan pie! Thank you, Chef, for a delicious meal. Following lunch, Uel announced the top three winning teams with the lowest scores and presented gift certificates to the Pro Shop. The winners were: 1st Place: Eleanor Gibbons and Sara Jones 2nd Place: Arra Bolding and Shirley Kingdon 3rd Place: Cindy Rincon and Lynn DeWolfe Congratulations Ladies! We are looking forward to our next play event on July 16th. The theme will be “Christmas in July” and continuing our support of Angel House of North Georgia, the ladies of the LGA will be providing donations to purchase pool passes for the Girls of Angel House. As always, we invite ladies of all skill levels to join our golf league. Membership forms are available at the Clubhouse.

HOMELESS VETERANS GOLF EVENT— PROGRAM GUIDE Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program

6th Annual Homeless Veteran Charity Golf Event set for Friday October 23rd at Lake Arrowhead Highlands Course

The 6th annual Charity Homeless Veterans Golf Outing is set for this fall at the Lake Arrowhead Highlands Golf Course in Waleska, Ga. The shotgun start event will be held on Friday the 23rd of October and will have a 4 person team scramble format. The event is put on by the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans program (CCHVP) with support from local veterans and volunteers. 100% of the proceeds of the golf outing goes to support the various programs of the CCHVP and 100% of the monies spent by the CCVHP stays in Cherokee County. Homeless Veteran Situation in Georgia today— In last November’s Housing and Urban Development report to Congress, the State of Georgia was identified as lagging in several areas as it relates to Homeless Veterans to include: 



State of Georgia ranks 3rd among states for the largest number of homeless veterans in the Balance of State homeless areas (rural areas which make us 152 of the 158 counties in Georgia) State of Georgia ranks 3rd behind Hawaii and Oregon with the highest rate of unsheltered homeless veterans in the nation. Georgia has a 63.1% rate of unsheltered vs sheltered homeless veterans within the Balance of State Continuum of Care (COC).



Cherokee County ranks #2 in total homeless persons in the Balance of State. Bibb County ranks #1.



In 2019 we processed 90 homeless Veterans, male//female/ families.



Cherokee County does not qualify for VASH or Per Diem housing support for Veterans. We do qualify for SSVF Grants for Veterans with families with children under 17. It typically takes up to 12 weeks to get into the SSVF program.

HEROES RIDGE HONOR COVID 19 ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL This year, as part of the Cherokee County Homeless Veteran Golf Program (CCHVP) golf event and in celebration of Veterans Day, we are looking to fill this ridge with signs showing support for those HEROES who have been on the front line during the COVID19 crisis. We are creating a special sign that you can customize with up to three lines of 22 characters for creating a personalized message. In addition there is a logo space that can be added that can identify the organization that your loved one was part of. We have many of the front line organizations noted. This year’s guest of honor are the HEROES who are still on the front line as Policemen, Firemen, Doctors, Nurses, Teachers, EMT and other essential workers. Many of our Heroes put themselves in harm’s way during their time in the Military and they continue to do so today.

All signs ordered will be placed on “HEROES Ridge” during the CCHVP golf event on Friday October 23rd at the Lake Arrowhead Highlands Golf Course in Waleska. Once the event is over, all signs can be picked up and taken home to be displayed in your front yard. Signs are 24”x18” in size and come with an H-stand for inserting the sign into the ground. The signs are made of weatherproof plastic so that they are designed to be placed outside. Printed areas are only done on one side of the sign.

club business MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events. FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. by Sarah Martin Jones Invisible as Air – Zoe Fishman. New York: Harper Collins, 2019. It was only supposed to be one pill, taken on a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Sylvie Snow had no intention of taking another, much less becoming a user. But this day is different. It’s the three-year anniversary of losing her baby girl during childbirth, and Sylvie decides to dampen down her grief by unscrewing the lid of her husband’s Oxycontin prescription. She doesn’t look back. Winner of the 2020 Georgia Author of the Year Award, author Zoe Fishman explores America’s opioid crisis by showing how little cracks in the life of one middleclass family can become giant crevices when placed under the weight of addiction. Sylvie’s life looks as normal as a Norman Rockwell painting. She has a loving husband with a successful business, a bright son studying for his Bar Mitzvah, a fulfilling job, a beautiful home in a pristine neighborhood, supportive friends and family. But something about that first pain pill (prescribed for her husband’s broken ankle) makes her “kinder, softer, more fluid. Bubbles of goodwill coursed through her bloodstream.” That feeling, mixed with unresolved grief, is a heady cocktail. “For the longest time, it was like carrying a boulder in my chest where my heart should be,” Sylvie says about losing her child, Delilah. But while on Oxy, “it feels more like a pebble. There’s room to breathe.” By changing the narrative between Sylvie, her husband, Paul, and their son, Teddy, Fishman explores all facets of family trauma. Paul has his own addictions – nonstop training for triathlons (which caused the broken ankle) and online shopping for the latest and greatest

training equipment. (As Sylvie observes, “Everyone is a junkie today; everyone was on some pill or another.”) Meanwhile, Teddy escapes the real world by watching movies and approaches adulthood via his Bar Mitzvah with equal parts dread and convention. He is much more interested in spending time with Krystal, his first ever girlfriend, than cleaning cages at the local animal shelter – an activity his mom suggested for his bar mitzvah project. Plus, “if this Bar Mitzvah was going to mean anything to him in the long term,” he needed to “go back to the moment when Delilah was born but not born, when he learned what death was in the waiting room of that cold, sterile hospital. He needed to go back there and bridge that experience with the boy he had been then and the man he was becoming now.” (Quite a mature thirteen-yearold, our Teddy.) As Sylvie goes further down the rabbit hole of addition and Paul pretends not to notice anything different in the household, Teddy turns his narrative into a quest journey. He runs away to Cumberland Island, “the place where everything changed” – the place where Sylvie first realized that her pregnancy was in danger, and the place where Teddy left the island an older, wiser kid than who he was before. In this way, Invisible as Air is not only a story about addiction but is an examination of grief, especially unresolved grief. “Delilah’s death had not just happened to her,” Sylvie finally realizes, “It had happened to all of them.”

MY WINE RECOMMENDATION Sylvie needs to stay away from alcohol, but her book club friends can certainly share a local wine as they gossip about the Snow family. I recommend one from Chateau Meichtry, a family operated vineyard in Talking Rock, Georgia. Their Viogner is an aromatic blend of 95% Viogner grapes lightened with 5% Pinot Grigio and offers a refreshing summertime flavor of peaches and citrus.
