POOLS ARE OPEN!

The Governor of Georgia issued a new Executive Order allowing pools to open effective May 14th, 2020. This order provided a set of requirements that the Association must follow in order to open the pool, and we need the help of each homeowner to ensure that we have a safe environment for everyone and can keep the pool open for the benefit of all homeowners!

Additionally, sanitizing supplies will be provided at the pool and it is expected that each homeowner will clean tables and chairs both prior to and after use, in addition to following guidelines relative to hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes.

There are three primary requirements relative to pools openings: (1) Sanitization and Cleaning; (2) Enforcement of Social Distancing; and (3) Signage. The Association has retained a cleaning company to clean the pool furniture, handrails and gates, bathroom surfaces, and other commonly touched surfaces daily.

The most challenging requirement is enforced Social Distancing. The Association is required to enforce distancing of 6-feet between non-cohabiting individuals (people who do not live together). Please remember, these steps are being taken for your safety as well as the safety of others, and so that we can keep the pool open. To comply with this requirement, the Association is taking the following steps:

1. The maximum number of people at the Red Cloud pool at a given time will be limited to 100 individuals. The Great Festival pool is planned to be limited to 60 people when opened. These limits will be re-evaluated once the current Executive Order expires and/or is updated and we gauge actual pool usage.

2. Pool furniture will be spaced appropriately on the pool deck and we ask that you make every effort not to move furniture or to return it to its original location if movement is required. Please remember that this is for the safety of you and other homeowners!

3. A gate monitor will be in place at both pools once open to remind residents about and enforce social distancing, as well as provide interim cleaning of frequently touched surfaces. This is an unbudgeted additional expense for the Association, but currently legally required in order to “enforce” social distancing. This may change based on future changes in guidance from the State of Georgia.

4. Invited guests will be prohibited until the Association is able to increase the maximum number of people at the pool at a single point in time, or demand for pool time is such that allowing guests is deemed appropriate.

5. A reservation system is being implemented to allow usage to be as equitable as possible. The reservation system will initially limit bookings to one reserved time per day per address and four reservations per week. Reservations are planned to be for 2.5-hour blocks, followed by 30-minute closures to allow for homeowners to exit the pool prior to the new reservations entering, and also allow for interim cleaning. Times will be 10:30 AM – 1:00 PM; 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM; 4:30 PM – 7:00 PM.

Use CourtReserve to schedule your Red Cloud pool reservations this Summer. If you do not have a reservation, you will be turned away at the gate. Your ID card will also be required as well. This policy will be strictly enforced due to usage limitations and social distancing requirements.

Reservations for Red Cloud Pool are initially being limited to 100 individuals per 2 ½ hour reservation block, and reservations are limited to 1 reservation per day and 4 reservations per week. We expect these restrictions will be altered as attendance is gauged and restrictions change.

Given the limitations on attendance, guests are not currently allowed.

The pool is scheduled to open daily at 10:30 AM, will have 2 ½ hour reservation blocks followed by 30-minute transition and cleaning periods, and will close at 7:00 PM daily.

This will be a different pool season with unique challenges, and we ask that each of you as homeowners be cognizant of the challenges in opening and operating pools this season, and help us and the pool staff in our efforts to provide a safe and fun environment for all homeowners!

LAKE ARROWHEAD FATHER’S DAY SCRAMBLE On Saturday June 20th, Rex Wallace, Joshua Wallace, Brian Schell and Sean Webb won the annual Lake Arrowhead Father’s Day Scramble. The tournament rules allow nonfamily members to participate as long as the team includes at least one father/child or grandchild combo. The format of the tournament was a typical 4-person scramble where all team members hit tee shots and then select the best ball location for their next shot. This process of hitting shots and selecting the best one continues until the ball is holed out. The teams were divided into flights and prizes were given out for the first three places.

RED, WHITE & BLUE SCRAMBLE JULY 4TH, 2020 Red, White, and Blue in this instance had a dual meaning. Besides representing Independence Day and our nation’s flag, it was an integral part of the tournament rules. As many of you know, the Lake Arrowhead Golf Course has five sets of tees, three of which are red, white, and blue. The closest (and typically easiest) are the red tees and the longest (and typically the hardest) are the blue tees. In between are the white tees.

To start the tournament, each of the teams teed off from the white tees. If the team made a par, it continued to play from the white tees on the next hole. However, if the team made a birdie, it moved back to the harder blue tees on the next hole: if the team made a bogey, it moved up to the easier red tees. This process continued throughout the tournament.

The tournament field was divided into three flights based on each team’s score. Pro Shop gift certificates were then awarded to each member of the top three teams in each flight. Ties were broken with a scorecard playoff starting on hole 18.

by Jan Garbiel About a month ago, the whole yesterday-is-today-istomorrow that has become so routine in our lives suddenly became more than just hard. It became really annoying. I decided I just didn’t want to do it any more. What I really wanted to do was strap on my golf shoes and go outside and play. That’s all. Just play.

I believed I wasn’t alone. And it turns out, I was right.

The first priority of the Lake Arrowhead LGA Board has been to keep everyone safe in these monumentally abnormal times. And as you know, our 2020 spring activities — from the March “Swing into Spring” Business Meeting to our Angel House Charity Golf Tournament were cancelled.

But there comes a time when, well, you just gotta do what feels right. It’s spring (almost summer) in Georgia. And that always means it’s time to go outside and play. And here in Lake Arrowhead that means play golf.

The LGA Board scheduled Ladies Choice — 9 or 18 for May 28. It was to be all about getting outside in a tough year and enjoying a day of golf with a fun group of ladies. We followed all the best practices for social distancing including a cart for each golfer. We even dropped our usual post game lunch gathering.

Fourteen signed up. And then Mother Nature did what she does and presented us with cloudy skies and threats of thunder and lightning.

Even I dropped out. Despite the weather threats, five adventurous ladies showed up and played: Paula Hall, Arra Bolding, Patti

Adams, Eleanor Frongillo, and Sara Jones. They were joined on Hole 6 by a trio of turkeys (the feathered kind.) As you can see from the photos, they had a great time and were able to finish nine holes just as it began to rain.

Our next Play Event is set for June 18 and the theme will be Stars and Strokes in honor of Flag Day on June 14. It will be a 9 Hole 2-person Scramble.

This time we plan to gather for lunch on the patio and will practice our best social distancing etiquette.

I hope you will join us. It’s spring in Georgia. And it’s time to go outside and play!

club business SECURITY UPDATE Summer is upon us which means a lot of folks are on our roads either driving, running, walking, etc. Please observe all rules of the roadway and keep our neighbors, pets, and wildlife safe.

Please be aware that there is a leash law in Cherokee County that applies to Lake Arrowhead. The Ordinance states “Dogs running at large means any dog not under immediate control, not on a leash, not at heel, not beside a competent person.” A dog must be securely and humanely enclosed within a house, building, fence, pen or other proper enclosure to be considered under restraint or control. A public nuisance animal for example is an animal that makes any vocalizations for more than 15 minutes without interruption or more than 30 minutes if the vocalization is intermittent. Either violation must be reported to the Cherokee Marshal’s office by an involved party. Office number is 678-493-6200. Any person found guilty of violating these ordinances may be punished by a fine not to exceed $1000.00 and by imprisonment in the county jail not to exceed 6 months.

club business MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events.

FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed.

All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore.

PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind.

ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community.

Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion.

NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks.

NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks.

Your decals will be mailed to you.

All items in Dry Storage MUST display the current decal to continue using Lake Arrowhead Dry Storage. As a reminder, it is a violation of the covenants to park or store the following: boats, vehicles, trailers, campers, RVs, etc. on your property. Agreements may be terminated at any time due to past due accounts.

BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup.

fitness and sports BURN AGAIN by Maury Nunes, Ink-Stained Tennis Wretch Earlier this year, my monthly Article discussed how much tennis had to be played to burn 3,500 calories, to drop one pound of fat. Here’s more on that issue of tennis and weight control: Perhaps, I’m obsessed with my weight. I check it every morning when home. It relates to my obsession with health, a key ingredient to avoiding, well, death. [Safety is the other key.] I was originally inspired to this concept by film-maker Alan Konigsberg aka Woody Allen, who when asked “How would you like to become immortal?” responded “By not dying.” Good plan.

So, in that respect all the talk about American obesity, morbidity, fat, overweight, etc. indicates excess weight avoidance is a necessary part of the plan; Tennis is a great component as exercise combats weight.

The public discussion of this topic has turned to a conception of weight more complex than mere poundage; the Body Mass Index, often acronymed to BMI. As many readers probably know, BMI relates weight to body size as a function of height, using the formula: BMI =(703 X weight in pounds)/(height in inches)2 If the result is: Under 18.5 Between 18.5 & 24.9 Between 25 & 29.9 30 or More

However, BMI doesn’t take one’s build (thin, stocky, etc.) or bone density, into account. Those near the defining borderlines may take solace or add worry accordingly.

Moreover, for those looking for a way to rationalize higher numbers away, the formula’s constant of 703 was developed “scientifically” by a scientist in the mid-1800’s from his observations of Belgian soldiers, who were mostly young adults and more physically fit than not.

Instead of a chart, here’s a formula one can use to customize, based on current weight, how many calories per hour you can burn. Metabolic Rate X Weight in Pounds] X 0.476

Metabolic Rates (scientifically determined by comparison to zero effort) assigned to tennis are: Casual Hitting = 5; Doubles = 6; Singles = 8 [Source: https://captaincalculator.com/health/calorie/calories-burnedtennis-calculator/ N.B. Formula simplified]

So, someone who weighs 200 pounds playing Doubles for one hour would burn: 5 X 200 X 0.476 = 476 Calories Meaning playing for 7.35 hours to drop that one pound.

The 150 pound double player, however, would burn only: 5 X 150 X 0.476 =357 Calories Meaning playing for 9.8 (almost 10 hours) to lose that one measly pound.

Discouraged? Don’t be; remember that’s fat loss. Water loss goes more quickly, but is not generally lasting so when you hit the scale after play, you’ll be more encouraged and if you keep at it, over time IF YOU CONTROL YOUR CALORIC INTAKE the weight will get to a healthy level.

The logical conclusion: Tennis is Good for Weight, and Weight is Good for Health, and Health is Good for life, Therefore: Tennis is Good for Life!

Nonetheless, BMI offers a useful rule of thumb. On the assumption few of us not suffering from some wasting disease worry about being underweight, the usual concern is how to improve BMI by reducing weight and that’s where tennis comes into play (pun intended!).

by Sarah Martin Jones American Dirt – Jeanine Cummins. New York: Flatiron Books, 2020 In a book that critics have compared to John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath, Jeanine Cummins tackles a topic that polarizes Americans – illegal immigrants coming to the US from Central America and Mexico. Whether they are fleeing poverty, political corruption, sex trafficking, domestic abuse or drug cartels, they ride atop “La Bestia” (The Beast) – a network of freight trains that traverse the length of Mexico and ends at the US border. It is estimated that between 400,000 and 500,000 migrants annually make the trek. “They leave their homes, their cultures, their families, even their languages, and venture into tremendous peril, all for the chance to get to the dream of some faraway country that doesn’t even want them,” observes the story’s central character. To ride “La Bestia” is to undertake a mission of terror.

Clambering aboard the trains in Cummins’ book are eight-year-old Luca and his mother Lydia. They are solid middleclass citizens (she, a bookstore owner and he, a gifted student) who never expected to flee their suburban home in Acapulco. But when Los Jardineros, a powerful drug cartel, massacres their family during a quinceañera cookout in retaliation for a newspaper article written by Lydia’s husband, Lydia and Luca must get out, and get out fast. The opening scene is harrowing as mother and son huddle in a bathroom shower while the seemingly endless clatter of gunfire kills sixteen family members. While Luca is curled into a traumatized ball of pain inside his mother’s arms, the attackers eat the chicken, still warm on the grill.

Suddenly their life becomes a race to the US border as Lydia knows that Los Jardineros will be relentless in their pursuit. Without passports or any means of transportation, their only escape route is “La Bestia”.

It is not a journey for the weak. “This path is only for

people who have no choice,” warns a kindly priest. “No other option, only violence and misery behind you. Some of you will fall from the trains. Many will be maimed or injured. Many will die. Many of you will be kidnapped, tortured, trafficked, or ransomed. Some will be lucky enough to survive all of that and make it as far as Estados Unidos only to experience the pleasure of dying alone in the desert, abandoned by a corrupt coyote. Every single one of you will be robbed.”

For eighteen days and 1600 miles, Lydia and Lucas travel north, hopping on and off trains along with a cross section of fellow migrants – both good and evil.

They hear their stories. They learn the ropes. They pray for survival. They drive themselves onward. Their progress is a nightmare in slow motion. While the pace of Cummins’ story does not allow for detailed characterization, it provides the reader with a look at the variety of tragedies that cause people to choose the immigrant path, among them two teenage girls who form an attachment to Lydia and Lucas. The sisters teach Lydia and Lucas how to board the trains. “You must match your speed to the train’s. You must find the ideal point of access, a protrusion, a ladder, a spot with plenty of grip and some way to quickly get to the roof of the car. You must fully commit to your position once you’ve chosen it. You must defend it from other migrants whose urgency matches your own. Under no circumstances can you attempt to change course once you’re under way.” Also riding La Bestia is a young former cartel member (who may be a paid Los Jardineros assassin). Staying at night on the trains is hazardous, but so is getting off as no one knows which

In this way, American Dirt reads as a thriller – one that does not require the reader to choose sides concerning US policy toward illegal immigrants. However, it is clear that Cummins has great sympathy for migrants and has researched their plight extensively in writing her book. (Her website Jeaninecummins.com offers ways that individuals can contribute to humanitarian causes including water stations, soup kitchens, human rights organizations, and safe havens for travelers. She matches the donations with profits from her book.) While a number of literary critics have pointed out the book’s stilted language and questioned whether a white writer should appropriate a culture, the book succeeds at telling a riveting story through the eyes of relatable characters.

“We are invisible,” Lucas says at one point on the journey when he realizes how insignificant he is to those who control power. “We are desert plants. We are rocks.” American Dirt gives humanity to these invisible people.
