POOLS ARE OPEN! The Governor of Georgia issued a new Executive Order allowing pools to open effective May 14th, 2020.

This order provided a set of requirements that the Association must follow in order to open the pool, and we need the help of each homeowner to ensure that we have a safe environment for everyone and can keep the pool open for the benefit of all homeowners!

There are three primary requirements relative to pools openings: (1) Sanitization and Cleaning; (2) Enforcement of Social Distancing; and (3) Signage. The Association has retained a cleaning company to clean the pool furniture, handrails and gates, bathroom surfaces, and other commonly touched surfaces daily.

Additionally, sanitizing supplies will be provided at the pool and it is expected that each homeowner will clean tables and chairs both prior to and after use, in addition to following guidelines relative to hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes.

The most challenging requirement is enforced Social Distancing. The Association is required to enforce distancing of 6-feet between non-cohabiting individuals (people who do not live together). Please remember, these steps are being taken for your safety as well as the safety of others, and so that we can keep the pool open. To comply with this requirement, the Association is taking the following steps:

1. The maximum number of people at the Red Cloud pool at a given time will be limited to 100 individuals. The Great Festival pool is planned to be limited to 60 people when opened. These limits will be re-evaluated once the current Executive Order expires and/or is updated and we gauge actual pool usage.

2. Pool furniture will be spaced appropriately on the pool deck and we ask that you make every effort not to move furniture or to return it to its original location if movement is required. Please remember that this is for the safety of you and other homeowners!

3. A gate monitor will be in place at both pools once open to remind residents about and enforce social distancing, as well as provide interim cleaning of frequently touched surfaces. This is an unbudgeted additional expense for the Association, but currently legally required in order to “enforce” social distancing. This may change based on future changes in guidance from the State of Georgia.

4. Invited guests will be prohibited until the Association is able to increase the maximum number of people at the pool at a single point in time, or demand for pool time is such that allowing guests is deemed appropriate.

5. A reservation system is being implemented to allow usage to be as equitable as possible. The reservation system will initially limit bookings to one reserved time per day per address and four reservations per week.

Reservations are planned to be for 2.5-hour blocks, followed by 30-minute closures to allow for homeowners to exit the pool prior to the new reservations entering, and also allow for interim cleaning. Times will be 10:30 AM – 1:00 PM; 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM; 4:30 PM – 7:00 PM.

Use CourtReserve to schedule your Red Cloud pool reservations this Summer. If you do not have a reservation, you will be turned away at the gate. Your ID card will also be required as well. This policy will be strictly enforced due to usage limitations and social distancing requirements.

activities & events USE OF THE POOL AND ASSOCIATED FACILITIES MAY EXPOSE YOU TO COVID-19 USE FACILITIES AT YOUR OWN RISK 1. Individuals who have a fever or other symptoms of COVID-19 shall not enter the pool 2. Social Distancing of non-cohabitating persons is required – ensure 6 feet of separation between yourself and other individuals who you do not cohabitate with, are not immediate family members, or are not roommates within your home 3. Frequently wash hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and refrain from touching your face to the extent possible while at the pool 4. Sanitize pool furniture prior to and after use 5. Handshaking is prohibited 6. Avoid all unnecessary person-to-person contact 7. Do not share pool objects and clean after each use 8. Use of face coverings is encouraged within pool area. Do NOT wear face coverings in the water.

9. Guests are not allowed until further notice Individuals with any of the following conditions or of the noted age are required to Shelter In Place per Governor Kemp’s Executive Order 05.12.20.02 through June 12th, 2020 and should not use the pool facility: • • • • • • •

65 years of age or older Chronic lung disease Moderate to severe asthma Severe heart disease Immunocompromised Class III or severe obesity Diagnosed with diabetes, liver disease, or chronic kidney disease and undergoing dialysis

The Board is aware that this is a significant change, but our primary concern is ensuring the safety of our homeowners, and also ensuring that the pool opens and remains open in compliance with State of Georgia requirements. Please be aware that any homeowners found to be in violation of these guidelines may be subject to suspension of amenity privileges, but we are confident that each homeowner will be responsible with their pool usage this Summer!

We look forward to a different but successful pool season, and we expect that the rules and restrictions will be adapted as this is a very fluid situation and we expect State guidelines to be altered in the coming weeks. Please watch for additional information and changes in the coming days and weeks!

Reservations for Red Cloud Pool are initially being limited to 100 individuals per 2 ½ hour reservation block, and reservations are limited to 1 reservation per day and 4 reservations per week. We expect these restrictions will be altered as attendance is gauged and restrictions change. Given the limitations on attendance, guests are not currently allowed.

The pool is scheduled to open daily at 10:30 AM, will have 2 ½ hour reservation blocks followed by 30-minute transition and cleaning periods, and will close at 7:00 PM daily.

This will be a different pool season with unique challenges, and we ask that each of you as homeowners be cognizant of the challenges in opening and operating pools this season, and help us and the pool staff in our efforts to provide a safe and fun environment for all homeowners!

by Jan Garbiel If this were a typical Spring, by now we would be well into our golf season, enjoying great weather and sharing tips on improving our individual games. In this anythingbut-typical year, I am very happy to tell you that we have not let recent challenges get in our way.

As you know, the Lake Arrowhead LGA and MGA have sponsored the Angel House Golf Tournament for the past seven years in support of the North Georgia Angel House. They have used the money we raised to install new windows and roof and to completely renovate a kitchen, along with many, many other things. Last year’s contribution totaled $27,000 and, because we were hoping to ride that crest to an even higher level this year, our fundraising began a bit earlier.

And then our conversation of birdies, pars and bogeys was replaced with stranger new terms: flatten the curve, shelter in place, social distancing, quarantine.

Knowing that Angel House continues to need food and supplies for the 14 girls currently sheltering in place, the LGA/MGA decided to “Take Lemons and Make

Lemonade.” We challenged our members to continue to make their donations as hole sponsors and players. We reached out to our corporate hole sponsors and asked that they continue their support.

We recently presented a check to North Georgia Angel House for $3,650 and we will continue to collect funds for this worthy charity. We thank all of you who have responded with your donations. For those of you who planned to play or to make a donation/sponsorship, it’s not too late. We will continue to collect funds until July 1 in the hope that we will come closer to our original goal. Every contribution goes directly to Angel House and makes a difference in the lives of these girls.

Meanwhile, you will be pleased to know that your LGA Board is working on a play event tentatively set for May 28. We will continue to follow social distancing guidelines but we are sure everyone will have fun getting back out on the links. As they say, “we got game here.” Just in a different way!

lake news WELCOME TO THE WATER Twelve years ago, KYSC started renting pontoons on Lake Arrowhead with the simple purpose of giving my fellow property owners a way to enjoy the Lake without buying a boat. This year, we had to delay opening until we could develop a socially acceptable and healthy way of doing business. I thought you all might be interested in our new health focus system. There is now no physical contact between our staff and customers. We have gone entirely online with our reservation system. When you request a pontoon, the renter will be electronically sent two documents, a Boat Rental Agreement and a Release/Health Statement.

The Boat Rental Agreement is for the renter to sign, the Release/Health Statement is for everyone to sign. These documents are all disbursed electronically by the renter to all their crew. These documents activate your free boating insurance for that day (collision and liability). You have up to 24 hours before your rental date to do so, or your reservation request will be cancelled to give someone else a chance to rent that pontoon.

For all "new to us" skippers and their matie, there is a short 30 minute session verifying your navigational knowledge and docking skills. Because the lake can get busy especially on holiday weekends: Do you know your horn signals? Your anchoring line scope? What to do if the steering cable breaks? How to signal for help? How to dock in a cross wind? The Lake Arrowhead Safety Rules? (lessons are available for $25/hour/person plus boat rental).

For those who rent homes, we have a Vacation Special Package: 12 hours of rental for the price of 8 hours (taken in 4 hour sessions). For those who enjoy a peaceful and quiet day on the Lake, we have a weekday special - 4 hours for the price of 3 hours.

Our entire crew are property owners who are very dedicated to you having a safe and fun time on the Lake.

This has eliminated all the paperwork issues at the boat house. We can now walk you straight to your pontoon which has been sanitized by one of our Hosts prior to your boarding. BTW, we strongly encourage you to take pictures of the vessel for your protection against any damage claims. These boats are owned by your fellow property owners which have graciously provided them for your enjoyment.

HOW TO TIE UP A BOAT IN A SLIP A properly tied boat will stay centered in the slip and not damage the boat or the slip. When you tie a boat directly to the closest dock cleat, you can damage that dock cleat and your boat because the forces are side to side and not for and aft.

The most important thing is to use the right size "dock line" (you can get some from Walmart). It should be about 3/8 inch thick. Dock lines are especially made to stretch upto 25% under load. Dock lines should not be too thick or they can damage cleats on your boat or the dock.

Clothesline or other lines are not to be used because they don't stretch.

For a six point tie on the non floating docks of Lake Arrowhead, it involves 6 dock lines, four 15 ft long and two 3 ft long. The first long line goes from the bow of the boat to mid dock or piling. The second long line goes from mid dock or piling to the stern of the boat.The short line goes from the bow to a dock cleat in front of the boat. Now do the same thing for the other side.

Remember, as the water level changes during the year (it can be as much as 2 ft) you need to readjust your lines to keep the boat centered in the slip.

For a six point tie on the floating docks, you will need longer dock lines of about 25 ft. However, the idea is the same, one line from the bow of the boat to the stern dock cleat, the other from the stern of the boat to the bow dock cleat. These are called Spring Lines because they act as shock absorbers to the waves and wind forces. The remaining two short lines are loosely tied to dock cleats to keep the boat from drifting to far out of the slip. No need to worry about water level adjustments because it is a floating dock.

It would be good to have 4 hanging fenders on your pontoon (two on each side) to protect it from "dock rash" as the boat moves in the slip because of the wind and waves.

club business MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events.

FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed.

All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore.

PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind.

ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community.

Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion.

NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks.

BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup.

PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks.

fitness and sports BOUNCERS by Maury Nunes, Ink-Stained Tennis Wretch Bouncers can be trouble. The burly guys at the local pub? Forget About it!

No, tennis balls that bounce in unexpected ways on landing, due to differences in the balls themselves.

We’re not talking here about unexpected bounces from spin or English imparted by the opponent, intentionally or inadvertently. [Those are trouble, too, but subject for another article – maybe.] Misjudging the bounce is a recognized cause of return errors.

One would expect that tennis balls would bounce more or less uniformly if hit with the same force and trajectory. [Higher trajectory, greater gravity effect.]

After all, aren’t all tennis balls supposed to be made to official specifications?

Well, not necessarily!

First of all, USTA specifies four sets of specifications.

[WHAT?!!?!!] Yes, FOUR: Fast….Medium….Slow….High Altitude What’s a bit maddening here is all four must be colored white or yellow. [Source: USTA Code, Friend at Court, Appendix I.] ITF uses the same standards.

Actually, there are four others for 10 and under players, Green, Orange and Red as well as – get this - Red Foam.

Yes, even starter foam balls are fully specified!

Wouldn’t it make more sense to differentiate somehow other than marking packaging? Squash balls, though all black, use colored dots to distinguish six types.

In addition to matching colors, all tennis balls, except the slow ball, are sized within identical tolerances. Slow can be 7.00 to 7.30 centimeters in diameter, whereas the others must be between 6.54 and 6.86 centimeters.

I doubt many of us could readily recognize a 2% diameter variation between the smallest Slow and biggest Fast. The range for all types is more than a 4% swing, which would have bounce implications.

All have a narrow weight range: 56.0 to 59.4 grams (a 6% swing) so also generally indistinguishable, though the gravity effect may be mildly affected by weight.

Fast: 54 to 60 inches Medium: 53 to 58 inches Slow: 53 to 58 inches High Altitude: 48 to 53 inches That yields roughly a 10% range for each type.

Rebound Factor is tested by dropping the ball “…100±0.1inches (measured from the bottom of the ball) onto a smooth, rigid and horizontal block of high mass and the rebound height is measured (again to the bottom of the ball). [Source: ITF Approved Tennis Balls, Classified Surfaces & Recognised [sic] Courts, A Guide to Products & Test Methods; USTA adopts ITF standards.]

Of course, these standards are to be met for brand new balls; therein lies the rub – more precisely, the bounce.

As we all know, balls degrade with use, especially in rebound height.

Hence, if we drop a new ball at 50” (8’4” may be tough for the vertically challenged) it should bounce roughly 30”. At 2’ a ball has lost 20%.

The maximum rebound change under the 100” bounce test is 1.6 inches, roughly 3%, for every NINE games – just nine, perhaps equivalent to an average set.

Tournament rules provide for generally replacing the balls after just two sets. Of course, a tournament played among professionals and us Mixed Doubles amateurs won’t be quite equivalent in average power with which the ball is hit each time.

So, apart from curiosity is there a point to this article?

Yes – in fact, Two! 1. I’m going to mark one of the support posts at both Shelters for 50”, 30”, 27” and 24” so balls can be accurately tested, suggesting that balls below the 10% loss range (27”) and surely below 24” should be replaced.

2. Given the variations we might experience in changing courts in Mixed Doubles play, a short warm-up of just 2 or 3 hits might be in order before we start the next round so we can get a sense of the bounce in the balls being used on each court.

Grace Slick. Any list of female rock stars of the seventies would include these singers. But no one rocked harder or lasted longer in the music industry than Stevie Nicks. With her flowing gypsy outfits and whirling dancing, she dominated the stage, belting out lyrics in her haunting, fragile voice that channeled the turmoil of her relationship with fellow band member and on-again/off-again lover Lindsay Buckingham, who she met in high school in Palo Alto, CA. From the time they joined Fleetwood Mac as a ‘package deal’ in 1975, they personified all the sex/drugs/ rock & roll excesses of life on the road of a touring mega band. From the platinum-selling Rumours album (Rhiannon, Landslide, The Chain) on through her solo recording and performances (Edge of Seventeen, Stop Dragging My Heart Around) Stevie went her own way, picking up the pieces whenever she had to.

between these two performers drives the plot forward. The reader recognizes that the tension – both sexual and artistic – will lead to disaster eventually, but, oh, the music they create together is worth the heartache.

Not only will music fans enjoy the parallels between the backstories to the fictional songs on the band’s blockbuster album Aurora, Jenkins Reid makes the reader believe there is such a band as Daisy Jones & the Six by including full lyrics in the book’s appendix, much like album liner notes. (“Write a list of things you’ll regret / I’d be on top smoking a cigarette / Oh, we could be lovely / If this could get ugly.”)

Author Taylor Jenkins Reid draws on her admiration for Nicks in her book (and soon to be Netflix series, produced by Reese Witherspoon) Daisy Jones & the Six. Written in a behind-the-music, Rolling Stone Magazine oral history format, she traces the life of Daisy, her central character, through a series of interviews with band members, record producers, friends, and roadies as the band rises to stardom and just as quickly falls apart. What emerges is an insider’s look at a performer who never stops thinking about tomorrow, especially when it means competing for stardom in a man’s world.

And then, of course, there are the drugs. “Some of my best nights back then,” says Daisy, somewhat wistfully, “were the nights I hit the dope just right. Perfect amount of coke, perfect timing on the pills, with just enough champagne to keep me bubbly.” The number of drugs consumed is astonishing, making one wonder how anyone could live this lifestyle for very long, which, of course, they don’t (expect, perhaps, if they are Keith Richards). In an interview, the author summarizes Daisy Jones in this way: “She kicks a bad husband to the curb, delivers when she needs to, and says things like, ‘I had absolutely no interest in being somebody else’s muse. I am not a (expletive deleted) muse. I am the somebody.’”

Daisy’s struggle for recognition is examined through her relationship with The Six lead singer Billy Dunne.
