MARINA PAVILION NOW OPEN We are pleased to announce that the Marina Pavilion is now open for your use! Lake Arrowhead property owners and their accompanied guests may enjoy the community’s newest amenity during daylight hours. Although Covid-19 restrictions will require use to be limited initially, we ask that all safety guidelines must be followed, including social distancing and limiting the number on the Pavilion at any one time to 10 people. In order for us to keep the Pavilion open, it is imperative that we follow these protocols. If more than 10 people want to get on at any given time, those who are on must limit their time to 1 hour and the others must wait their turn. Once the Government and State guidelines confirm larger gatherings are permitted, the capacity of the Pavilion will be 85 people. Our Activities Director, Nicole Fitzgerald, will be programming community events to utilize this great community amenity. At that time, the Pavilion will also be available to reserve for special events by contacting Marlyn Patouillet in the administration office. The Pavilion and new boat slips have been a longawaited addition to the community amenities and we want to ensure that all property owners and their guests preserve the high quality of this community asset. Therefore, the rules and regulations will be strictly enforced by the security team. Security cameras are in place and there will be appropriate consequences for violators of the rules. Please note that covers are being prepared for the winch stands, but in the meantime, for your own safety do not touch the winches. Marina Pavilion Rules and Regulations: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events. FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. PAGE 4 | MAY // JUNE 2020
ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion. Please immediately report any violations to Security so that appropriate actions can be taken. Also, don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. If each of us uses common sense and follows the Golden Rule, treating others the way that they want to be treated, the Pavilion will be a tremendous asset for everyone to enjoy. This new iconic community structure will become a gathering place for our property owners and their guests for years to come. When the time is right, a lineup of future events will provide many new opportunities to gather at the Marina with friends and family to enjoy the shimmering beauty of Lake Arrowhead. BOAT HOUSE REOPENS The KYSC Boat House opened on Friday May 1st with a new booking system. The Boat House crew (which includes a registered nurse) has developed a paperless and touchless rental process.
• In order to minimize contact with our staff, all skippers will return the boat to its original slip or to one of our guest drop-off points without assistance from staff.
All documents are now electronically sent and signed before you arrive. This will greatly speed your departure from the marina. Once your reservation has been confirmed via email, you will be meet by one of our KYSC Hosts at the marina and escorted directly to your boat. • Renters will collect all PFD’s for themselves and their guests and will deposit the PFD’s in disinfectant containers when returning.
Corona Virus Procedures at the KYSC Boat House. I hope all of my fellow property owners are doing well and in a safe place. You and the boat house staff health and safety are the foremost concern of mine. In that light, we are following the government requests to put in place good virus procedures. I have spent several weeks listening and developing a boat rental process that I hope you will use and appreciate. It is a touch-less system and eliminates all paperwork handling. Here are the new boat house procedures: • All rental and insurance documents require electronic signature from renter and guests. They are to be returned via email 24 hours prior to rental embarkment for each boat rental.
• The bathroom will be locked unless staff is present at the Boathouse. A porta-potty is available at the Marina. • We will still offer our 12 hour package deal; however, all hours need to be used by the end of our season (November 1) • All Boating Club members must use any remaining hours in their 12 hour deal by November 1. • Lake Tour operations will be dependent upon state guidelines for social distancing. Hopefully by the time you read this article, we will be open and you can be enjoying boating on our beautiful lake by renting a pontoon from us. by Jan Garbiel It is an understatement to say that these past weeks have been challenging beyond anyone’s imagination. With the Coronavirus pandemic looming, the LGA board had no choice but to cancel our two most important events: the March 18 “Swing into Spring” business meeting, and the April 16 “Bloom Time in Lake Arrowhead,” our first play event for the season. Just when we were so eager to get outside and tackle the links, we were faced with a very different — and much harder — challenge. Honestly, I love golf. And I can’t wait to get back to it. But I keep wondering what will all this social distancing and isolation do to my golf game? I put my golf bag away last November and left it there until Santa brought me a new one. A few weeks ago, I decided to try playing a round but that surely was “fools-gold golf.” You know what that is: a few good shots that just bring you back for more. But that game changed my perspective a bit. I realized that I need to keep my expectations in line. I was rusty then and I won’t likely improve much while I am “safe at home.” I’m just not going to play as well as I did at the end of last season. And, competitive as I am, I’m okay with that. Even so, there is a way to make sure I keep the “rusting” in check. I can re-establish my “feels”: remembering how to control that wedge, my putting speed, getting my brain and body to work together. The next, and last one, is the simplest. When I can play with others again, I’m going to just have fun and enjoy being outside. After being stuck indoors by a rainy winter and then moving into a spring defined by keeping our distance from others, the sunshine and fresh air — and companionship — that golf offers will be a very welcome relief. I’m looking forward to better days and better times. And I hope to see each of you on the links with me very, very soon. P.S. featured article LAKE ARROWHEAD CHURCH (LAC) 2020 CHARITY AWARDS by Pastor Monty Watson, Jill Strickland, and Marilyn Biviano Thanks to the generous Lake Arrowhead community and area businesses, in early March, Lake Arrowhead Church awarded over $59,000 to ten Local Charities--Angels on Horseback, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Goshen Valley Foundation (Boys Ranch), Help a Child Ministry, Must Ministries, Operation Christmas Child, Shepherd’s Hook, Wounded Warriors Retreat, Cherokee County Homeless Veterans, and Luo (Small Ministry for Needy South African Children). The church alone would have never been able to make such an impact. Over $38,000 of this amount was raised through the 31st annual Golfing Fore Children golf tournament last fall. The church would like to thank all who participated – 116 golfers, 125 contributing businesses, family sponsors and 33 community volunteers. As residents often say, Lake Arrowhead is a piece of heaven on earth. This is a beautiful, peaceful place to live and the people are amazing and generous. Our desire at Lake Arrowhead Church is to enhance that sense of community as we live out our faith and serve families in our neighborhood. featured article LAKE ARROWHEAD CHURCH (LAC) 2020 CHARITY AWARDS TOTALING $59,174 Angels on Horseback’s mission is to provide therapeutic equine-assisted activities to individuals with mental, physical or emotional disabilities and to encourage growth through the benefits of horse and human relationships. Located in Jasper, Georgia, they offer therapeutic horseback riding and other equine activities that provide improved strength, flexibility, muscle tone and motor skill development while providing tremendous emotional benefits to their students. Their instructors are certified by PATH International and are trained to work with individuals with disabilities to learn proper horsemanship skills in an equine environment. In 2019, they served over 42 individuals throughout the year. They had a record number of 38 weekly riders in their Fall Session and were able to certify a new PATH International Registered Level Instructor. They had 43 fantastic volunteers who served over 2,900 hours in 2019. They are looking forward to growing even more I 2020 and have set a goal for 50 riders per week and for the first time ever to take riders to the Special Olympics Fall State Horse Show in October! At least half of their riders are on partial to full scholarships, and they never turn away a rider for inability to pay. They invite you to an Open Barn event on Saturday, April 11 from 1pm to 4 pm with rider demonstrations, horses volunteer and refreshments. Their web site is angelsonhorseback. org Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), is an interdenominational Christian sports ministry working to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. FCA communicates faith and hope while providing athletes and coaches the opportunity to gain athletic and spiritual insight and to interact with positive Christian role models from the college and professional ranks. FCA’s goal is to have a presence on every high school and middle school campus and every sporting event in Cherokee County. Their staff also offers summer worship camps at local churches. In 2019, as FCA ministered to coaches, athletes, and students and celebrated 50,577 faith decisions. FCA distributed 190,832 Bibles worldwide, had 20,849 huddles, and had a record-breaking year with a total attendance of 89,323 at 805 FCA camps around the world. Cherokee County’s FCA reported 317 faith decisions, distributed 600 Bibles, had 24 huddles, and sent over 400 athletes to FCA Camps. In 2020, Cherokee County FCA has added 15 new Character Coaches to high school teams across the County. Fellowship of Christian Athletes has conducted a summer worship camp at Lake Arrowhead Church (LAC) for the past few years. LAC is looking forward to their Mega Sports Church Camp June 8-11, 2020. The Goshen Valley Foundation was started in 1999 with the mission of providing more loving environments and better lifelong outcomes to foster youth in the local area. It includes three programs: Goshen Valley Boys Ranch, Goshen New Beginnings and Goshen Homes, all with the mission of providing peace and purpose to youth in foster care. Goshen Valley Boys Ranch, a top-rated group home in Georgia, is home to 46 young men in foster care age 8-18. Goshen New Beginnings works with young men and women age 18 to 21 preparing them for independent life after their time in foster care is completed. Goshen Homes provides loving family environments to youth in foster care while keeping siblings together and in their home community. The Goshen Valley Foundation provides safe and purposeful environments for around 90 young men, women, and children each day. Since 1999, they have served 772 foster youth, overseen 27 adoptions, celebrated 47 high school graduations, and guided 8 young men into military service. HAC assists elementary school-aged children in Cherokee County, Georgia. HAC’s mission is to reflect the love of Jesus Christ by assisting local children and families in need. The ministry personnel work directly with school counselors who identify those in need of food, school supplies or other specific needs. Help A Child Ministry was chosen as Clayton Elementary School’s Partner of the Year in 2018. They continue to focus on local school children in need of food, clothing, school supplies, medical assistance, family crisis assistance and more based on the needs identified by the school counselor and principal. The Rubi Fund was started to help a kindergarten child with cancer treatments in Atlanta. HAC sends a special thanks to the children of Lake Arrowhead Church (LAC) for the money they raised for HAC by their Christmas Post Office at LAC. featured article MUST Ministries has helped needy families in Cherokee County for over 30 years. The MUST Ministries Program Services in Cherokee County offer those in need food and clothing assistance, referral assistance, financial assistance for rent and utilities and employment assistance. MUST also offers a variety of classes in the classroom and computer lab that are staffed by volunteers. The MUST Supportive Housing Program provides long-term housing for individuals who have been chronically homeless and have some type of verifiable disability. The Motel Voucher Program provides emergency shelter to those living in homelessness for up to 30 days while they work with a case manager to find permanent housing. The MUST Summer Lunch program provides a sack lunch each summer weekday to over 7,000 children in seven counties in Georgia. Since 1995, they have prepared over 2.14 million lunches with 76,608 lunches served to children in the Cherokee area this past summer (2019). Some other recent statistics are: • • • • • • •
524,194 pounds of groceries distributed to 15,703 clients including 3,196 students and their families in the school panties 489 Thanksgiving boxes to 1,600 residents in Cherokee county 70,436 meals to homeless 135,991 clothing items distributed with 4,148 children serviced with hats, scarves, gloves, blankets, underwear and socks 9, 635 hygiene kits given away 910 shelter guests 618 people found work through the personal training and coaching from MUST staff and volunteers

Each Christmas shoe boxes are given to underprivileged children ages 2-14. In the hands of local churches, every gift-filled shoe box is a powerful tool for evangelism and discipleship—transforming the lives of children and their families through the Good News of Jesus Christ! The postage to mail these boxes is paid for by the Lake Arrowhead Church. For Christmas 2019, our little Lake Arrowhead Church made and donated 501 of these shoe boxes full of little gifts and shipped them to the next receiving station. The volunteers use hundreds of skeins of yarn and yards and yards of fleece to make hats, scarves and blankets that go to troops overseas, veterans, Violence Center victims, new babies at both the hospital and the health department, a homeless shelter in Cartersville and Jasper and to our own Operation Christmas Child. Last year there were 1,054 items distributed to these groups. The contact for this charity is Jill Strickland, 770-356-9310 or lashepherdshook@gmail.com Wounded Warriors Retreat and Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Wounded Warriors Retreat’s mission is to make a difference in the lives of wounded warriors by mentoring, promoting, supporting, and encouraging spiritual and emotional healing for wounded warriors and their families while participants enjoy the many outdoor activities offered by their private hunting retreat. For the warriors and family members who desire spiritual healing during their visit to the Retreat, they are counseled by a staff pastor or a visiting volunteer pastor. Their goal would be to lead, encourage, and guide the Wounded Warrior down a road to recovery for both emotional and spiritual healing. featured article Cherokee County Homeless Veterans. On any given night here in the US, there are over 49,000 homeless veterans living on the streets. Cherokee County Homeless Veterans has been working for five years to help homeless veterans living among us here in Cherokee County. In 2019, completely staffed by volunteers, Cherokee County Homeless Veterans helped 90 homeless veterans through their program. They helped these veterans with housing, food, clothing, jobs, medical and Veteran claims issues. In this past year, a vehicle donation program was started that helped to provide 11 vehicles to veterans. A new effort has been started to help homeless veterans and veterans who are serviceconnected disabled” and receive a VA disability payment. Cherokee County Homeless Veterans are working with our Congressman and others to streamline the Social Security administrative process for applying and qualifying for disability payments-- as it takes up to two years to qualify this program. Finally, they are also looking to build a “campus” that will house transitional homeless and low-income veterans in Cherokee County. LUO is a Greek word meaning “set free.” LUO was founded in 2007 by Gavin and Lindsay Tarquinio to support and grow a ministry that took in street children in Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa. Their school, Ithemba, now has 300 children. There is also a safe house called the LUO House that is home to 12 children that have been rescued from abuse and neglect. These children receive an amazing, top quality education, food, medical care, mentorship, tutoring, and after school activities. LUO also offers high school scholarships to a local private school. Their goal is that each child that walks through the doors of Ithemba feels loved, secure and encouraged to be everything that God created them to be! club business SECURITY UPDATE Security is engaged in a new community program called Wellness Check. An on-duty guard will call you each day at a time you choose for them to call your residence. They will just check to see if you are OK. If this is a program you would like to enroll in, please call the north Gate (770 479-2565) and have your name added to the list. There is no charge for this service and if you decide to stop this community service, just call the North Gate and cancel. The list is confidential and will not be used except for the wellness check. Also, now is the time of year we have all of our deer babies (fawns) running close to the roadway. Please slow down and give them a chance to survive. If you see a fawn laying by themselves, don’t go near them; their mother will return. The doe (adult female deer) will rarely be found near her fawn for the first few weeks of its life because her presence may attract predators. MARINA PAVILION RULES AND REGULATIONS: HOURS OF OPERATION The Marina Pavilion will be open dawn to dusk or during sanctioned LAYCC events. FOOD & BEVERAGE Food and beverages are allowed to be carried onto the Pavilion. No glass bottles or beer kegs are permitted. No grilling or preparation of food is allowed. All trash must be placed in the trash receptacles on the shore. PERSONAL CHAIRS Property owners are allowed to bring their own folding chairs on to the Pavilion. They must be taken with you when you leave, i.e. chairs cannot be left behind. ATTIRE Members and guests shall dress in attire befitting the surroundings of the community. Extremely revealing attire, such as a thong, is not suitable for the family atmosphere of the Marina Pavilion. NO SWIMMING No swimming is permitted from the Marina Pavilion or docks anywhere in the “No Wake” zone. No running or diving is permitted from the Pavilion or docks. NO FISHING No fishing is allowed from the Marina Pavilion or docks. BOATS Boats can tie up on the side of the walkway only where there are cleats and cannot at any time tie up to the Pavilion. Maximum time at the walkway is 1 hour (or 15 minutes if others are waiting). These areas are intended for drop off and pickup. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES No grilling, skateboarding, bicycles, rollerblading, sunbathing, or feeding the wildlife is permitted on the Marina Pavilion or docks. PETS Pets are not allowed on the Marina Pavilion.

by Sarah Martin Jones Girls Burn Brighter – Shobha Rao. New York: Flatiron Books, 2018. In present day Karnataka, India, life for two teenage girls is no different than in centuries past for females in the lower caste of Indian society – unrelenting cruelty, poverty and misogyny. Motherless Poornima is all but chained to her alcoholic father’s weaving loom, while destitute Savitha spends her days sorting through trash dumps for anything that can be converted into money. But when the two girls form a friendship, a light of hope is lit in each that will sustain them throughout the horrors and pure evil that will soon dominate their young futures. Narrated from the viewpoint of each girl in alternating chapters, the story begins when nimble-fingered Savitha is hired by Poornima’s father who needs to produce more fabric to fund a sizeable enough dowry to marry off Poornima. Because of her dark skin and introverted manner, many suitors have taken one look at her and passed. The entry of Savitha into her lonely life makes each day more bearable. Unlike the sadness that haunts Poornima, Savitha knows how to find joy in small things – like the occasional banana she eats with her yogurt. “She made even the smallest of life seem grand,” observes Poornima, whose grief over the loss of her mother is still deep. Watching Savitha’s delight in small things brings to Poornima “a sudden and glimmering satisfaction” as she goes about her daily duties – cooking, going to the well for water, washing dishes, scrubbing clothes, sitting for endless hours at the charkha. Once Poornima is engaged to a boy from a nearby village – a boy she has never met but will marry regardless – Savitha delights in making a turquoise sari for her friend’s wedding. This sari, which remains unfinished, and the rare banana that Poornima procures for her friend, become motifs throughout the novel, representing what little each girl has and how deeply their friendship sustains them, even when they are apart. One night before Poornima is to be married, a horrible thing happens to Savitha, and she disappears. In an even greater state of grief than she experienced after the death of her mother, Poornima weds a cruel young man and moves into the household of an even crueler mother-in-law. She becomes a houseslave to her new family until she too decides to run away. Most of the novel chronicles the parallel lives each friend experiences as their individual circumstances PAGE 20 | MAY // JUNE 2020
plunge them deeper and deeper into one abuse after another. Yet, as Poornima realizes, “If two people want to be together, they’ll find a way.” In this way, Girls Burn Brighter is a quest story, taking the central characters into an underworld where they fight against society’s monsters who prey on the weaknesses of others. All that sustains each girl through their respective traumas is the memory of her best friend. “Like being handed a kite in a strong wind,” says Poornima. Eventually, both girls land up in Seattle, Washington. Savitha is sold as a housecleaner to a wealthy Indian man who owns apartment buildings, and Poornima becomes an employee of a brothel owner who ships girls like Savitha to wealthy men around the world. It is here that each girl touches the bottom of her despair: “What fools we are,” thinks Poornima. “We girls. Afraid of the wrong things, at the wrong times. Afraid of a burned face, when outside, outside waiting for you are fires you cannot imagine. Men, holding matches up to your gasoline eyes. Flames, flames all around you, licking at your just-born breasts, your just-bled body. And infernos. Infernos as wide as the world. Waiting to impoverish you, make you ash, and even the wind, even the wind. Watching you burn, willing it, passing over you and through you. Scattering you, because you are a girl, and because you are ash.” The strength of Shobha Bao’s writing is that even though her story is filled with relentless cruelty, including prostitution and human trafficking*, Girls Burn Brighter is an uplifting story of love, hope and the transformative power of friendship. Yes, treatment of women has improved around the world, but now and then, even in “social distancing” and “uncertain times,” it’s good to be reminded of the gulf between the haves and the have-nots. *Human trafficking and modern-day slavery are umbrella terms for the exploitation of some 40 million people annually. The International Labor Organization estimates that forced labor generates $150 billion in illegal profits each year.
