To Lake Arrowhead Homeowners, Residents, Patrons and Friends, First we would like to say that we hope you and your families are doing well. Your well-being is of paramount importance to us!

We will continue to communicate any updates regarding Lake Arrowhead’s response to address the rapidly developing situation involving the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). The health and safety of our homeowners, residents, patrons, employees and the public remain our primary focus.

Additionally, Lake Arrowhead is closely monitoring all Cherokee County and State of Georgia orders and is fully compliant with all governmental directives issued, including Governor Kemp’s April 2nd Executive Order, to date and will continue to adapt as necessary in the coming weeks. Significant effort is being made to ensure that all CDC recommended best practices are being followed and all governmental regulations are complied with.

The closure of the Grill has been extended to April 30th, and administrative offices are available by appointment only. Please see the full update below.

LAYCC AND PRIVATE EVENTS All organized LAYCC sponsored community events are cancelled through April 30, 2020. This includes any club activities such as Mahjong, bridge, canasta, etc.

All private events scheduled in the Clubhouse Grill or Dining Room are cancelled through April 30, 2020.

Any changes relative to this decision will be communicated at a later date should the WHO and CDC recommendations related to this virus be changed.

GRILL AND DINING ROOM The Grill and Dining room will remain closed through April 30, 2020. The closure may be extended based on governmental and medical recommendations.

Take-out food service with curbside pick-up is in place and will be continued and orders may be placed by phone, 770.721.7900 x3. A second line has been added to provide improved service and access to order placement.

CLUBHOUSE AND ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE The administrative offices will continue to operate under their normal schedule, but LAYCC asks that you make every effort to complete needed functions by phone (770-721-7900) or e-mail (membership@ lakearrowheadga.com) and in-person interaction is by appointment only.

Each member of our team is highly valued. Please be assured that every effort will be made to protect them during this unprecedented time. Through the April 30th closure date, each employee will continue to be compensated at their normal level.

GOLF COURSE The Cherokee County Marshal’s office inspected the LAYCC golf and Clubhouse operations on April 1st and confirmed that the Golf and Clubhouse operation are fully compliant with all Cherokee County guidelines and orders and that the steps outlined below are appropriate. We have made some additional changes in response to Governor Kemp’s new order that is now in effect.

activities & events The golf course will continue operations with enhanced sanitization and other safety protocols as follows in an effort to provide a healthy environment and to continue to provide a healthy recreational outlet for our patrons: • Golfers are required to practice appropriate social distancing at all times • Only 1 individual will be permitted in a golf cart, unless golfers live in the same residence, in which case 2 riders will be allowed • Walking will be encouraged • Two golf bags may be on a single cart, but only one individual will be permitted in the cart at any point (unless the individuals live in the same residence). The second golfer must walk and maintain appropriate distances when retrieving or replacing golf clubs • Entry into the Clubhouse is to utilize bathrooms or check-in only and limited to 4 customers inside the building at any point in time • Pencils have been removed from carts and customers are signing credit card receipts with a pencil and taking that pencil with them to the cart for single person use • Sanitizer is available at the counter; each credit card is being cleaned and staff is wearing gloves at all times • Payment by phone is encouraged when tee times are made, to reduce the need to enter the Clubhouse • Flagsticks have been removed and the cups raised above ground level to prevent balls from going into hole and eliminating a common touch point • All rakes have been removed from sand traps, and ball washers and coolers have been removed from the golf course Enhanced cleaning and sanitizing efforts will remain in place for both the Golf Shop, golf carts, and bathrooms.

All organized Golf events are cancelled through April 30th, and golf food service has been altered to carry-out only.

REAL ESTATE SALES The Sales and Information Center will continue normal operations while maintaining social distancing.

Previewing Homes will be available online at lakearrowheadga.com or in person Monday – Saturday 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM and Sunday 12:00 – 5:00 PM. OTHER AMENITIES (GREAT FESTIVAL PARK, MARINA, PLAYGROUND, POOLS, TENNIS COURTS, TRAILS) All outdoor amenities will remain available for use, and homeowners and their invited guests are asked to observe the recommended “social distancing” guidelines provided by the CDC when using the LAYCC amenities. Please be aware that we are not able to sanitize any outdoor amenities or equipment at this time. Therefore, we recommend using your own precautions when using any of these amenities.

At this time, we have received no reports of residents, employees or vendors who have been infected or in contact with anyone quarantined because of the virus. However, our team is closely following all developments, including government health advisories and travel guidelines, and we will provide updates as needed as we monitor this rapidly changing situation.

We do not take any of the decisions mentioned above lightly. These actions are being taken to ensure the health and welfare of the residents of our community as well as of all those who work so hard to maintain it and keep it operating. We will keep you informed of all relevant developments as we move forward.

We also ask each of you to take this situation seriously and do your part to minimize the spread of this virus. We highly encourage you to review safety guidelines and look for updates from the CDC, the Georgia Department of Health and the World Health Organization.

golf news ST. PATRICK’S DAY TOURNAMENT 44 golfers showed up to play in the most unique tournament format of the year. The 4 person scramble format is very common but we add a twist to this event. Each player can only use 4 clubs! The partners cannot share clubs. This added a touch of difficulty and fun as each golfer had to decide which clubs to use and how best to maneuver around the course. For example, most golfers used a putter as one of their four clubs while a few others decided to leave their putter at home and used a driver or other club to putt.

The field was divided into two flights and awarded Pro Shop gift certificates to the top three teams in each flight. Using this process, the winners with the overall lowest score were Pat Farrelly, Lee Heubner, James Hatcher and Mel Standley.

golf news NEWS FROM THE MGA (Lake Arrowhead Men’s Golf Association) From Pat Farrelly, 2020-21 MGA Board President With 41 members, and 5 guests, in attendance on Wednesday evening, March 11th, the LAMGA held their 1st Quarterly Members Meeting of 2020, at the Clubhouse at Lake Arrowhead.

After a spirited Putting Contest, with 15 members participating and won by Don Gaspard, everyone met at the MGA Memorial Bench, located between #18 and #9 greens, where Deb Bettencourt helped reveal the plaques of those members that passed away in 2019 (Bob Bettencourt and Malcolm Fowler).

At 6pm we all met in the Clubhouse Dining Room to enjoy a fabulous Southern Style Buffet prepared by Chef John. At 6:30pm the meeting began with the MGA board welcoming all members and guests. Mike Hackett, Club Treasurer, gave his annual report to the members. Don Gaspard, Communications Director, gave his updates on communication procedures. Lee Heubner, Tournament Chairman, reminded everyone of the 2 upcoming March Tournaments (The Pinehurst Scramble and the Masters 2-Man). Lee also talked about the sign-up, cost and April starting date of the much anticipated 2020 MGA Match Play Tournament.

Uel Kemp (LAYCC Golf Pro) was our guest speaker and talked to the members about the new World Golf Handicap System, in affect starting in 2020, and the Myrtle Beach MGA Golf trip in September.

New Business consisted of: Dave Davis talking about his KBD Foundation Fundraiser, to be held on Saturday, April 4th at LA Highlands Golf Course. Pat Farrelly, LAMGA Board President, talked about the Angel House Fundraiser, which is the primary fundraiser for the LAMGA. Discussion involved looking for volunteers, donations and signing up to play in the event on Saturday, May 16th. Robert McGurk, Social Chair, talked about our 9-hole Glow Golf event to take place on Friday, April 17th, starting at 7:30pm on the driving & putting range. Ralph Lumpkin, Golf Course Maintenance Coordinater, talked about painting and sanding schedule on the course and asked for volunteers to participate. The floor was opened up for any questions or concerns and the meeting was adjourned at 7:45pm.

The next MGA Quarterly meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10th at 5pm. We welcome all MGA members and those wishing to join the MGA to join us for fun, food and conversation.

On March 8, Lake Arrowhead Church presented ten local charities and ministries with checks totaling over $59,000. The church alone would have never been able to make such an impact. Over $38,000 of this amount was raised through the 31st annual Golfing Fore Children golf tournament last fall. The church would like to thank all who participated – 116 golfers, 125 contributing businesses, family sponsors and 33 community volunteers.

As residents often say, Lake Arrowhead is a piece of heaven on earth. This is a beautiful, peaceful place to live and the people are amazing and generous. Our desire at Lake Arrowhead Church is to enhance that sense of community as we live out our faith and serve families in our neighborhood.

The church recently launched a new website to reintroduce their ministries and leaders to the community. You can check it out at www.lachurch.org . Our church services are on Sunday at 10:30 am—all are welcome!

feature article LAKE ARROWHEAD CHURCH (LAC) 2020 CHARITY AWARDS TOTALING $59,174 Angels on Horseback’s mission is to provide therapeutic equine-assisted activities to individuals with mental, physical or emotional disabilities and to encourage growth through the benefits of horse and human relationships. Located in Jasper, Georgia, they offer therapeutic horseback riding and other equine activities that provide improved strength, flexibility, muscle tone and motor skill development while providing tremendous emotional benefits to their students. Their instructors are certified by PATH International and are trained to work with individuals with disabilities to learn proper horsemanship skills in an equine environment. In 2019, they served over 42 individuals throughout the year. They had a record number of 38 weekly riders in their Fall Session and were able to certify a new PATH International Registered Level Instructor. They had 43 fantastic volunteers who served over 2,900 hours in 2019. They are looking forward to growing even more I 2020 and have set a goal for 50 riders per week and for the first time ever to take riders to the Special Olympics Fall State Horse Show in October! At least half of their riders are on partial to full scholarships, and they never turn away a rider for inability to pay. They invite you to an Open Barn event on Saturday, April 11 from 1pm to 4 pm with rider demonstrations, horses volunteer and refreshments. Their web site is angelsonhorseback.org Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), is an interdenominational Christian sports ministry working to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. FCA communicates faith and hope while providing athletes and coaches the opportunity to gain athletic and spiritual insight and to interact with positive Christian role models from the college and professional ranks. FCA’s goal is to have a presence on every high school and middle school campus and every sporting event in Cherokee County. Their staff also offers summer worship camps at local churches.

In 2019, as FCA ministered to coaches, athletes, and students and celebrated 50,577 faith decisions. FCA distributed 190,832 Bibles worldwide, had 20,849 huddles, and had a record-breaking year with a total attendance of 89,323 at 805 FCA camps around the world. Cherokee County’s FCA reported 317 faith decisions, distributed 600 Bibles, had 24 huddles, and sent over 400 athletes to FCA Camps. In 2020, Cherokee County FCA has added 15 new Character Coaches to high school teams across the County.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes has conducted a summer worship camp at Lake Arrowhead Church (LAC) for the past few years. LAC is looking forward to their Mega Sports Church Camp June 8-11, 2020. The Goshen Valley Foundation was started in 1999 with the mission of providing more loving environments and better lifelong outcomes to foster youth in the local area. It includes three programs: Goshen Valley Boys Ranch, Goshen New Beginnings and Goshen Homes, all with the mission of providing peace and purpose to youth in foster care. Goshen Valley Boys Ranch, a top-rated group home in Georgia, is home to 46 young men in foster care age 8-18. Goshen New Beginnings works with young men and women age 18 to 21 preparing them for independent life after their time in foster care is completed. Goshen Homes provides loving family environments to youth in foster care while keeping siblings together and in their home community. The Goshen Valley Foundation provides safe and purposeful environments for around 90 young men, women, and children each day. Since 1999, they have served 772 foster youth, overseen 27 adoptions, celebrated 47 high school graduations, and guided 8 young men into military service. feature article Help A Child Ministry (HAC) is a local charity. HAC assists elementary school-aged children in Cherokee County, Georgia. HAC’s mission is to reflect the love of Jesus Christ by assisting local children and families in need. The ministry personnel work directly with school counselors who identify those in need of food, school supplies or other specific needs. Help A Child Ministry was chosen as Clayton Elementary School’s Partner of the Year in 2018. They continue to focus on local school children in need of food, clothing, school supplies, medical assistance, family crisis assistance and more based on the needs identified by the school counselor and principal. The Rubi Fund was started to help a kindergarten child with cancer treatments in Atlanta. HAC sends a special thanks to the children of Lake Arrowhead Church (LAC) for the money they raised for HAC by their Christmas Post Office at LAC. The MUST Ministries Program Services in Cherokee County offer those in need food and clothing assistance, referral assistance, financial assistance for rent and utilities and employment assistance. MUST also offers a variety of classes in the classroom and computer lab that are staffed by volunteers. The MUST Supportive Housing Program provides long-term housing for individuals who have been chronically homeless and have some type of verifiable disability. The Motel Voucher Program provides emergency shelter to those living in homelessness for up to 30 days while they work with a case manager to find permanent housing. The MUST Summer Lunch program provides a sack lunch each summer weekday to over 7,000 children in seven counties in Georgia. Since 1995, they have prepared over 2.14 million lunches with 76,608 lunches served to children in the Cherokee area this past summer (2019). In the hands of local churches, every gift-filled shoe box is a powerful tool for evangelism and discipleship—transforming the lives of children and their families through the Good News of Jesus Christ!

For Christmas 2019, our little Lake Arrowhead Church made and donated 501 of these shoe boxes full of little gifts and shipped them to the next receiving station. Wounded Warriors Retreat and Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Wounded Warriors Retreat’s mission is to make a difference in the lives of wounded warriors by mentoring, promoting, supporting, and encouraging spiritual and emotional healing for wounded warriors and their families while participants enjoy the many outdoor activities offered by their private hunting retreat. For the warriors and family members who desire spiritual healing during their visit to the Retreat, they are counseled by a staff pastor or a visiting volunteer pastor. Their goal would be to lead, encourage, and guide the Wounded Warrior down a road to recovery for both emotional and spiritual healing. Cherokee County Homeless Veterans. On any given night here in the US, there are over 49,000 homeless veterans living on the streets. Cherokee County Homeless Veterans has been working for five years to help homeless veterans living among us here in Cherokee County. In 2019, completely staffed by volunteers, Cherokee County Homeless Veterans helped 90 homeless veterans through their program. They helped these veterans with housing, food, clothing, jobs, medical and Veteran claims issues. In this past year, a vehicle donation program was started that helped to provide 11 vehicles to veterans.

A new effort has been started to help homeless veterans and veterans who are service-connected disabled” and receive a VA disability payment. Cherokee County Homeless Veterans are working with our Congressman and others to streamline the Social Security administrative process for applying and qualifying for disability payments-- as it takes up to two years to qualify this program.

Finally, they are also looking to build a “campus” that will house transitional homeless and low-income veterans in Cherokee County. Our own LA Resident, Jim Lindenmayer is Director of this great cause and he is here with us today. Jim can be reached at 678-983-7590 or jlindenmayer80@ gmail.com.

LUO. LUO is a Greek word meaning “set free.” LUO was founded in 2007 by Gavin and Lindsay Tarquinio to support and grow a ministry that took in street children in Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa. Their school, Ithemba, now has 300 children. There is also a safe house called the LUO House that is home to 12 children that have been rescued from abuse and neglect. These children receive an amazing, top quality education, food, medical care, mentorship, tutoring, and after school activities. LUO also offers high school scholarships to a local private school. Their goal is that each child that walks through the doors of Ithemba feels loved, secure and encouraged to be everything that God created them to be! Also, now is the time of year we have all of our deer babies (fawns) running close to the roadway. Please slow down and give them a chance to survive. If you see a fawn laying by themselves, don’t go near them; their mother will return. The doe (adult female deer) will rarely be found near her fawn for the first few weeks of its life because her presence may attract predators. The fawn is well camouflaged and has very little odor, which helps it hide from predators.

So as I sat and pondered my extended sitting, thanks to the strictures brought about by the pandemic I’m working to avoid (so far so good) I was rather depressed over the story our scale has been telling me for the past week or so as the impetus for self-isolation has become ever more urgent. Yep, my weight is up and other than starving myself for a few days, I’m not seeing a lot of bright spots for that in the near future.

On the other hand, trying to put some lipstick on this pig (pun intended) supposedly as we age we are better off to be JUST A BIT heavier, the better to have some reserves to fight back against any illness. How appropriate! I’ll be that much readier if I should be afflicted by this enemy.

But on the other, other hand, it’s also a well-established fact that being overweight, even if not obese or morbidly so, can produce a host of other health problems and can potentiate others.

Hence, not surprisingly, there’s surely a sweet spot (no pun intended) for each of us and it’s pretty clear to me that I’m above mine right now and steadily heading further away from it.

That means I’m going to have to get that weight down.

You can guess what that has to do with tennis… exercise is one of those keys to losing weight. [Reminds me of the old funny David Letterman joke which goes like this: “I saw an ad recently that said ‘Lose weight without exercise or diet.’ Pretty much leaves disease, doesn’t it?” Well, maybe not so funny in the current environment.]

How much exercise do I need to lose, say, eight pounds to get down to what I call my fighting weight?

Below is an apt excerpt from a website www.

NutriStrategy.com/caloriesburned.html, which is pretty interesting as it shows calories burned for a very long list of activities in 1-hour increments. The biggest 1-hour burn shown is running a 5.5-minute mile for an hour, so basically just under an 11-mile run in 1 hour. [Good luck with that!] The lowest was watering the lawn. Watching television, eating, sitting at the computer or working a phone did NOT make the list.

Here’s the info on tennis:

Two hours of our Mixed Doubles means I burn 898.4 calories in two hours of tennis. [If you are bored at home you can calculate my current undesirable weight from the above chart.]

What does that mean in pounds? The Mayo Clinic (probably reliable, I’d say) proclaims 3,500 calories per pound. Kind of discouraging; that means I need to play for 8 hours to lose one measly pound. Realistically, though, that’s why it’s exercise AND diet.

However, that’s to lose one pound of fat! Staying hydrated may mask that result in the short term, but as the effort is extended over a reasonable period of time – days and weeks – staying hydrated remains something of a constant and weight drops. And we cannot afford to be dehydrated, especially in the hotter tennis weather, soon (we pray) to be experienced.

One irony that strikes me from the excerpt is that the better I do at losing weight, the slower the progress. If I lose 5 pounds, my output (pun intended) drops by 27.2 calories per two-hour session, which is a 3% drop in efficiency.

That’s further proof: Life has its challenges! Stay well!

by John Poidevant, Ph.D. Cape May, New Jersey to Hampton, Virginia - August 18-26, 2019 Continued from lat month's issue... The crew was up early and had SeaEagle entering the canal at 9:00 a.m. The day was warm, and the crew quickly broke out in a sweat as the first bridge passed astern. The traffic on the canal was light as the miles passed under SeaEagle’s full keel. Mike took the wheel and maintained a steady helm as he kept our vessel in the right center of the deep channel. Just past noon, the crew sighted Chesapeake City which marks the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay. The bay is narrow at this entrance but quickly widened as SeaEagle continued on her southwest heading.

Mike continued to build his sailing skills as we practiced crew overboard drills. Our “victim” was Bob, an empty gallon milk container, complete with a smiley face attached to a bright orange life jacket. Mike’s skills improved with each recovery as he delicately guided SeaEagle back to recover our friend Bob! After an additional 15 miles, the crew approached our anchorage for the evening, Still Pond. After setting the anchor, Skipper John, Mike, and George launched the dinghy to explore the area. This protected anchorage proved idyllic as everyone enjoyed the ride up Still Pond Creek to see the sights. After returning to SeaEagle, the crew enjoyed a swim off the stern followed by a few beverages and dinner.

The next day brought a freshening breeze as SeaEagle pointed her bow south toward the Chesapeake Bridge. The next destination was only 22 miles away and should have made for an easy day, or so the crew thought! As the bay continued to widen, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge soon loomed on the horizon. This modern-day marvel is a dual span bridge 4.3 miles long. As the winds continued to build, the spray began to fly from the bow and the crew was thankful for the protective canvas dodger. Dark, menacing clouds soon appeared and the crew decided to reef (reduce) the sails for better boat control. As Skipper John set his course for the approach to Rock Hall Harbor, a strong squall line appeared complete with an anvil looking cloud descending from a thunderhead. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge soon disappeared behind a squall line and the conditions deteriorated quickly.

Severe thunderstorms alerts were buzzing our cockpit speakers as the winds and seas quickly built. Our situation deteriorated rapidly! The weather became menacing and our choices were limited. Option 1 was to enter a small confined harbor under storm conditions and attempt to avoid the sandbars and other vessels as we attempted to secure a mooring. Option 2 was to head back out into the Chesapeake Bay, gain “sea room,” but sail right into the menacing squall line with the anvil cloud. After a brief discussion with his crew, Skipper John chose option 2 and pointed SeaEagle southwest and directly into the storm. The wind and seas continued to build gusting in the 30-40 knot range as the intense rain reduced visibility to a quarter of a mile. After PAGE 22 | APRIL // MAY 2020

30 minutes, the conditions slowly improved allowing the crew to reenter the harbor at dusk. The depth sounder was carefully monitored as SeaEagle maneuvered slowly through the anchorage, finally securing a mooring at Haven Harbor Yacht Club as darkness descended. The sense of relief was palpable among the crew and everyone enjoyed happy hour before going ashore for a hot shower.

After such an exhausting day, everyone enjoyed sleeping in before returning ashore to explore Rock Hall, Maryland. This is an exceptional town that warmly embraces the sailing community. Skipper John was excited to have lunch with his friend and sailboat broker Jim Elliot from S&J Yachts. Jim and his wife Janet had assisted in the purchase of SeaEagle by travelling to Nova Scotia for the inspection and sea trial. They joined the Skipper and crew at a local seafood restaurant for a great meal. Jim also provided very helpful local knowledge to plan our next stop at Turkey Point on the South River.

This proved to be a manageable distance. A high point of our trip was passing under the amazing Chesapeake Bay Bridge. This massive structure was impressive as we crossed underneath the 186-foot-high spans that carry over 24 million vehicles per year. Once past the bridge, the winds remained steady as SeaEagle continued her trek to the southeast. The crew dropped the anchor at sunset in a protected and calm anchorage. After a hearty meal and a nightcap, the crew of SeaEagle enjoyed a sound and restful night’s sleep.

The crew awoke early in preparation for their next destination, Mill Creek near Solomon’s Island. By this point in our trip, our morning routine had been established. The stove was lit to brew the coffee, and a CD of classical piano music was played in the hope or rousing our late rising crew member Mike. He enjoyed the cozy confines of his cabin each morning and listening to the early morning, often mindless banter! After a basic breakfast of bagels and cereal, the Skipper and crew would review the charts, discuss possible navigational hazards, and check the boat systems, including the diesel engine. The day’s itinerary became clear and around 9:00 a.m. the anchor would be hoisted and SeaEagle would set sail for her next anchorage.

The winds were light and favorable as SeaEagle ventured south. The forecast was for blustery conditions with winds building throughout the day. Soon, SeaEagle was on a sleigh ride as she sailed with the wind, current, and waves aiding

Sailing is known to have therapeutic qualities and Mike’s exuberant countenance seemed to support the research!

The next day provided another day of challenging sailing conditions. The winds and seas remained strong as SeaEagle continued her south bound trajectory on the Chesapeake Bay. The winds built throughout the day, often exceeding 30 knots. The seas were “lumpy” as the whitecaps grew larger throughout the afternoon. Soon, the skipper and crew engaged in a captivating discussion about why we were the only sailboat on the bay in these conditions! In the end, we concluded that SeaEagle was built for challenging conditions and would keep us safe on our voyage.

Mike continued to build his skills on various points of sail.

The winds were from the northwest allowing SeaEagle to sail on a “broad reach.” This is an efficient yet dangerous point of sail since a wind shift can suddenly send the boom careening across with tremendous force to the other side of the boat. This is known as an “accidental gybe” and can have hazardous, even lethal consequences. At the midway point of our sail toward Indian Creek, a wind shift occurred as Mike attempted to hold our southerly course. Skipper John alerted the crew, “Gybe Ho” as the boom swung above our heads like a baseball player swinging for the proverbial homerun!

The sound is distinctive as the rigging absorbs the powerful forces in play. Fortunately, there was no damage and SeaEagle continued her trek south. The sun was beginning to set as we closed in on our anchorage for the evening. After setting our anchor, the crew enjoyed a brief happy hour followed by a simple meal from the galley. SeaEagle rocked gently from the occasional passing vessel as the crew turned in for the evening.

The sound of seabirds pierced the early morning as the crew made preparations to get underway. The pace was more relaxed this morning since we only had about 18 miles to cover. SeaEagle motored out of the anchorage into a freshening breeze and began her voyage south to Mobjack Bay. The winds remained blustery and after four hours under sail, the red and green markers marking the channel entrance were located. True to form, the afternoon thunderstorms again appeared, bringing an ominous cloud in our direction

as we searched for our anchorage. Our senses were heightened as the strong breeze and white capping seas buffeted SeaEagle.

Numerous crab pots were observed, and a keen lookout was necessary to avoid fouling our propeller.

After perusing the anchorage to check the depths and waiting for the winds to diminish, our anchor splashed down in 14 feet of water. As the storm passed to the south, the skipper and crew enjoyed a beautiful sunset during the dinner hour. The evening conversation included serious and humorous reflections from our voyage. Laughter filled the anchorage. Tomorrow would be our final day of sailing and we looked forward to reaching our destination with mixed emotions. In many ways, this trip had exceeded expectations for everyone aboard. The trip had gone well, and we were excited about reuniting with our families and friends.

Our final day of sailing found everyone up early to get underway. Our customary planning session was held to discuss the day’s itinerary. As we ventured farther south on the Chesapeake Bay, we knew the ship traffic would increase, most notably with U.S. warships! Norfolk is the largest Navy base in the world and covers over 3,400 acres. It supports more than 75 ships and 134 aircraft among its 14 piers and 11 aircraft hangers.

The forecast was for brisk winds and building seas; the Skipper and crew were not disappointed! SeaEagle maintained a southerly course taking full advantages of the 20-25 knot winds, favorable currents, and large whitecaps.

Our seaworthy vessel charged ahead, at times exceeding 9 knots over the ground. SeaEagle had the finish line in sight and appeared to sprint toward her final destination! George took the helm for the first time in blustery conditions. A large smile emerged as he deftly steered SeaEagle toward the large 3 radio towers marking the channel entrance to Salt Ponds Marina! As we neared the entrance, a large dredging project was observed just to the north of the entrance. Since the entrance was reported to be tricky, Skipper John contacted the staff at Salt Ponds Marina to insure a safe entrance. After securing this information, it was time to drop the mainsail and start the engine. George moved to the foredeck in a gazellelike manner, careful to maintain his grip as SeaEagle rolled over the 3-4-foot whitecaps! After securing the sail, George returned to the safe confines of the cockpit. Mike and George prepared the fenders and docking lines. Skipper John guided his vessel toward the entrance to the channel, ever mindful to keep the red buoys on his starboard side. The channel was narrow but easy to maneuver in and soon the entrance to

community interest Salt Ponds Marina appeared off the port side. As SeaEagle entered the harbor basin, the Skipper and crew guided her safely into Slip H-14 and secured her lines. Whew!

It did not take long for a celebratory mood to develop on SeaEagle! We had completed the 250-mile trip from Cape May, New Jersey to Hampton, Virginia. Our trip had provided a wonderful array of experiences; calm reflective moments at anchor, exhilarating downwind sailing, menacing storms, and frequent moments of hilarity! The sense of accomplishment was palpable as the crew headed off to a nearby seafood restaurant for a fine meal and round of libations! SeaEagle had reached her new home port. Her new location would provide Skipper John, and his wife JoAnne, a comfortable home to visit their son K.C., a sailor in the U.S. Navy who is stationed in Norfolk.

As the Skipper and crew departed the dock the next day for their return flight, they gazed wistfully at SeaEagle safely secured in her slip. She appeared restful yet beckoning for future adventures! As our Uber driver arrived, the bags were loaded, and the lift gate closed with a thump. The trip was over, and a strong connection had been forged between the Skipper and crew. Their voyage had provided numerous challenges, yielding a strong camaraderie and sense of accomplishment. As the miles ticked away toward

the airport in Richmond, Skipper John recalled a line from a Robert Louis Stevenson poem, “Home is the sailor, home from the sea.” It was good to be going home!

WAC tour with student guide Maya Jaffar

On a rare bright, sunny day in rain soaked March, a group of WAC ladies was treated to a student led tour of the Black Box Theatre at Reinhardt. We were greeted by Technical and Operations Manager Morgan Brooks and guided through the back of the house facilities by Maya Jaffar, a junior Musical Theatre major.

We were shown how the offices and classrooms, the sets and wardrobe storage areas, and the tryout and rehearsal rooms, are all uniquely designed to complement the performance area itself. Theatre Coordinator and Associate Professor David Nisbit discussed the development of the theatre, and the many advantages of its modern “black box” design, an expansive square with dark floor, ceiling and walls. Utilizing its flexibility, stages can be set in the center for “theatre in the square” productions, or at the back and/or sides for traditional staging, with moveable seating allowing for optional audience configurations. The floor itself was designed to withstand such extensive adjustments, consisting of materials that can be easily maintained and frequently repainted.

A colorful, delicious Italian luncheon buffet was served, and the visit concluded with student performers, accompanied by Director of Musical Theatre and Opera, Brian Osborne, entertaining with a medley of musical numbers from past and future planned performances, including Ragtime, She Loves Me, and Cabaret. The students’ talent is amazing, their enthusiasm is contagious, and we are certain many proud graduates of Reinhardt’s outstanding performing arts programs are destined for great success.

by Sarah Martin Jones The Girl Who Wrote in Silk – Kelli Estes. Naperville, IL: Sourcebooks, Inc. 2015 Set in the San Juan islands off the coast of Seattle, author Kelli Estes tells a dual historical/contemporary story based around an unusual piece of Chinese embroidery. In present time, when Inara Erickson, a recent college graduate and the great-great-great granddaughter of Duncan Campbell, a Scottish shipping magnate, inherits her aunt’s island home, she accidently finds a sleeve from a blue silk ceremonial robe hidden under a loose stair in the house. The scene depicted on the sleeve is centered around a large steamship floating on turbulent seas with people floundering in its wake.

Further away from the ship and people is a tiny boat where a man stands shining a yellow light. Intrigued by the design, Inara contacts Daniel Chin, an Asian culture professor, to assist her investigation. Who might have embroidered the sleeve? Why was it detached from the original garment and how did it come to be hidden?

As their research – and relationship – moves forward, Estes alternates chapters between present day Seattle and 1882 when the Chinese Exclusion Act drove out all Asians. Her opening scene describes the horror of one family who, along with three hundred of their neighbors in Chinatown, are herded like cattle onto a steam and later thrown into the sea. A lone survivor is a young woman, Mei Lien, who is rescued and cared for by Orcas Island inhabitant, Joseph McElroy, a mail carrier who does not hold prejudice against the Chinese.

Back and forth the story goes as Inara rehabs her aunt’s house into her vision on a boutique hotel, funded by her wealthy father. Also, she gradually learns that the inhuman treatment endured by the Chinese was parallel to the growth of her family’s shipping empire in the late 1800s. “No matter that the Chinese had built their railroads, chopped their lumber, and canned their salmon. The Chinese had worked just as hard, if not harder, than any white man on this soil, but now they were being kicked out. Unwanted. Unclean. A nuisance.”

The conflict between past and present is heightened when Inara realizes that the person who ordered the dumping of the Chinese at sea was none other than her great-great grandfather, Duncan Campbell and that Daniel may be a descendant of Mai Lien. She is determined to right the wrong!

Estes’ writing is strongest in the chapters based in the 1880’s. The reader suffers along with Mai Lien as she mourns the loss of her family and struggles to survive in a hostile land. The weaker part of the story is the characterization of Inara and her romantic interest in Daniel. The plot relies too many coincidences. Why would the daughter of wealth have college debts? How does one transform a dilapidated home into a boutique hotel in less than three months? How often must Daniel’s curls fall forward as a sign of his sexiness?

The praiseworthy part of The Girl Who Wrote in Silk is the exposure of the shameful treatment Americans inflicted on immigrants who were recruited to help build a great nation, which then denied their participation in its riches. While Estes explains in her notes that the city of Seattle saw much less violence than other areas, the fact remains: Three hundred fifty Chinese residents, many of them US citizens, were driven out on February 7, 1886. They may not have been dumped at sea, but other from nearby areas did receive this fate. The novel is a good reminder about recognizing the rights of others and remembering that all our families were immigrants.

MY WINE RECOMMENDATION When it comes to pairing a wine with a smoked steelhead pulled from the Pacific or its first cousin, a rainbow trout, I’ll always reach for a chardonnay. One of the best comes from the Celilo Vineyard located in the Columbia Gorge. Most wines made from the grapes grown in this region command a price of $40 and higher. But winemaker Michael Savage offers a wine that, if not for every day, is at least affordable.
