WITCHES AND WARLOCKS by Ruth Nunes The LALGA played host to the LAMGA at the league’s final golf event of the season. It was a perfect fall afternoon for golf. Overcast without rain, cool and not much wind. With Halloween just around the corner, the theme for the event was Witches & Warlocks. Twenty couples signed up to play and many came dressed in Halloween costumes.

The format was a two person 9-Hole scramble with a least one member from the LGA or MGA. Each team was given a certain number of points to achieve based on their combined handicaps.

Points were earned for bogey or better.

With a shotgun start, the Witches & Warlocks headed out to their starting hole. It was time to enjoy a golf friendly evening with fellow golfers and that occasional awesome shot. By the end of play the sun was setting and the air was getting cool and the clubhouse was calling with food and drink.

The clubhouse was festively decorated in Fall/Halloween décor by the LGA. Chef John prepared a delicious fall meal that included a salad bar, sautéed root vegetables, haricot verts with shallots and corn, rice, scalloped potatoes, meat loaf and baked chicken! Of course John never forgets to include desert in the LGA events which was a seasonal dish of Apple Cobbler. The restaurant staff was kept busy filling drink orders and the buffet supplied with food. A big Thank You ! to the Clubhouse Staff for a sumptuous dinner and excellent service.

No small accomplishment with 40 + people to keep happy.

While everyone else was enjoying the evening, and Joan Eberhardt was working hard to tally the scores to determine the winner for the evening. Prize money was awarded to the couple with the best costume and to top six teams for play. The winners were as follows:

One final note well worth mentioning. Though the temperatures were cooling as we gathered for dinner, the clouds drifted away gave way to a truly magnificent sunset. A fitting end to a great LALGA Season!

GOLF NEWS 31st ANNUAL LAKE ARROWHEAD CHURCH GOLFING FORE CHILDREN CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT AND FUNDRAISER

Lake Arrowhead Church was holding the first Annual Golfing Fore Children Charity Tournament. Over the years, many children’s charities have benefited from the proceeds. The secret to the success lies right here in the Lake Arrowhead community.

The proceeds of the tournament this year go to Angels on Horseback, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Goshen Valley Foundation (Goshen Valley Boys Ranch), Help a Child Ministry, Must Ministries, and Operation Christmas Child (a project of Samaritan’s Purse). Please see page 11 for more information on the specific charities.

DEAR LAKE ARROWHEAD COMMUNITY: Lake Arrowhead Church announced that $38,000 was raised at the 31st annual Golfing Fore Children tournament held on September 27. This was a significant increase over the monies raised in all previous years. On behalf of Marcia Terry (co-chair) and myself, we wish to express our most sincere gratitude to the Lake Arrowhead community for your continued support. This is a very special community, full of caring, love, and a genuine interest in helping our neighbors.

The church gives 100 percent of the funds raised to the six local children’s charities named and described in the following article. These six charities are wellequipped to help children in crisis and provide opportunity to change the trajectory of their young lives. As a community, we should feel good that so many kids will be helped through our gifts.

A special thanks to the many donors, the Hole-in-One Sponsors--Day’s Chevrolet of Jasper and Dixon’s Golf ($1,000 American Express Card), the 7 Gold Sponsors, 11 Silver Sponsors, over 125 hole sponsors, fabulous silent auction donations such as the 4 tickets to see Elton John live at State Farm Arena, one week at a 3-bedroom condo in Saint Augustine, FL, valuable art work by local artists such as Billie Mathis and Jim Bennett, and the over 30 volunteers that made the tournament run smoothly and successfully.

Thanks to Uel Kemp and Kevin Aines for managing and hosting Golfing Fore Children tournament at the beautiful Lake Arrowhead (Highlands) Golf Course and Clubhouse. Chef John Wilbert, Dining Room Manager Elizabeth Raymond and their excellent staffs provided excellent golfing support, breakfast and lunch, and a memorable awards ceremony.

LAKE ARROWHEAD CHURCH (LAC) GOLFING FORE CHILDREN CHARITIES Angels on Horseback provides therapeutic equineassisted activities to individuals with mental, physical or emotional disabilities and to encourage growth through the benefits of horse and human relationships.

Located in Jasper, Georgia, they offer therapeutic horseback riding and other equine activities that provide improved strength, flexibility, muscle tone and motor skill development while providing tremendous emotional benefits to their students. Their instructors are certified by PATH International and are trained to work with individuals with disabilities to learn proper horsemanship skills in an equine environment.

Their web site is angelsonhorseback.org FCA – Fellowship of Christian Athletes, an interdenominational Christian sports ministry working to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. FCA communicates faith and hope while providing athletes and coaches the opportunity to gain athletic and spiritual insight and to interact with positive Christian role models from the college and professional ranks. Their goal is to have a presence on every high school and middle school campus and every sporting event in Cherokee County. Their staff also offers summer worship camps at local churches. FCA has conducted a summer worship camp at Lake Arrowhead Church (LAC) for the past few years where we have had several participants give their lives to Christ and LAC is looking forward to their Mega Sports Church Camp

The Goshen Valley Foundation is comprised of three programs: Goshen Valley Boys Ranch, Goshen New Beginnings and Goshen Homes, all with the mission of providing peace and purpose to youth in foster care. Goshen Valley Boys Ranch, a toprated group home in Georgia, is home to 46 young men in foster care age 8-18. Goshen New Beginnings works with young men and women age 18 to 21 preparing them for independent life after their time in foster care is completed. Goshen Homes provides loving family environments to youth in foster care while keeping siblings together and in their home community. The Goshen Valley Foundation provides safe and purposeful environments for around 90 young men, women, and children each day. Since 1999 they have celebrated 38 graduations, 27 adoptions, 8 joined military service and 603 total youth served. The contact for this organization is Zach Blend, Canton Office, 770-3459535. HAC assists elementary school aged children in Cherokee County, Georgia.

HAC’s mission is to reflect the love of Jesus Christ by assisting local children and families in need. The ministry personnel work directly with school counselors who identify those in need of food, school supplies or other specific needs. The MUST Ministries Program Services in Cherokee County offer clients food and clothing assistance, referral assistance, financial assistance for rent and utilities and employment assistance. Clients participate in a variety of classes in the classroom and the computer lab, both staffed by volunteers. The MUST Supportive Housing Program provides long-term housing for individuals who have been chronically homeless and have some type of verifiable disability.

The Motel Voucher Program provides emergency shelter to those living in homelessness for up to 30 days while they work with a case manager to find permanent housing. The MUST Summer Lunch program provides a sack lunch each summer weekday to over 7,000 children in seven counties in Georgia.

Since 1995, they have prepared over 2.14 million lunches with 76,608 lunches served to children in the Cherokee area this past summer (2019). Some other statistics for 2018 are: • 524,194 pounds of groceries distributed to 15,703 clients including 3,196 students and their families in the school panties • 489 Thanksgiving boxes to 1,600 residents in Cherokee county • 70,436 meals to homeless

Each Christmas shoe boxes are given to underprivileged children ages 2-14. In the hands of local churches, every gift-filled shoe box is a powerful tool for evangelism and discipleship—transforming the lives of children and their families through the Good News of Jesus Christ! The postage to mail these boxes is paid for by the Lake Arrowhead Church – all 430 were shipped last year to the next receiving station. The goal for 2019 is 500 boxes – please consider filling a box (available at the church.) The title of this Article reflects a phrase I found myself saying with self-contempt much too often. I had a nice easy shot to make and I readily launched the ball somewhere it shouldn’t go, too often out of the Court entirely or now and then directly into the net. Once in a while it might have even been a complete whiff; no contact whatever between the ball and racquet. Enough of these make for a really miserable day on the tennis courts and a really huge collection of them yielding a deeply negative tone that lasts well beyond tennis time.

These terrible shots (and they can be rotten serves, too) are officially called Unforced Errors. Their antonym is Winner, meaning a shot that wins the point because the opposing player can’t return it.

Recently, however, while watching some of the matches of the U.S. Open on television, I was astounded to see a pretty high number (CPA’s would call this a “material number”) for Unforced Errors for just about every

player. I mean, after all, these are the Professionals!

How can they afford so many errors when their livelihood depends on minimizing these?

Turns out that one frequently cited statistic these days is the ratio of Winners/Unforced Errors. So, I’m thinking for the Professionals it must be something like 5/1, right? 4/1? Not even close! 1.2 for Men is considered really good and 1.0 for Women. There’s no apparent explanation for this gender difference, nor, frankly, can I imagine one. My self-contempt kind of ratcheted down to just self-disgust.

COMMUNITY INTEREST LAPOA ELECTS NEW BOARD MEMBERS

On Saturday, October 26, the Annual Meeting for the Lake Arrowhead Property Owners Association was held and included election for 3 Board Seats of 7. Elections are held every year for staggered 2-year terms. 4 seats will be up for election in October, 2020.

Newly elected to the Board are:

Des Martin – formerly of High Point & now a Phase I resident Gail McGurk – a Phase I resident Rod Sudbeck – a Sanctuary Cove resident

Thanks to John Chastain and Jessica Duetta for their work in receiving, counting and verifying all ballots and announcing results.

Votes were received both by mail in early voting and in person at the Meeting. Of 1972 recognized eligible properties for which votes could be cast, the turnout of only 242 votes was a disappointment, especially as there were more than three candidates and the opportunity for write-in candidates.

The Board met for its organizational meeting to elect Officers until the next Annual Meeting. By unanimous vote in each case, all current Officers were re-elected:

Dawn James-Townes – Executive Vice President Richard Piercy – Asst. Treasurer Kathy Dietz – Asst. Secretary

Sally and Kathy are not Board members. Sally and Kathy are to be commended for volunteering for these important posts.

COMMUNITY INTEREST LAKE ARROWHEAD CHURCH IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE ARRIVAL OF A NEW PASTOR! Monty Watson, and his wife Kathy, will be moving to the Lake Arrowhead community over Christmas week. The Watsons are coming from Austin, Texas, where Monty has been a lead pastor for the last ten years. Prior to that, Monty was a pastor in Washington, DC, and in Roswell, Georgia. Monty and Kathy were born and raised in Arcadia, Louisiana, and grew up together. They accepted Christ on the same day as children, were high school sweethearts, and married in 1983.

Monty writes this about a defining season in his life. “When I was 16 years old, my dad suddenly died of heart attack. He died in my arms. The grief of that time left me confused and doubting God’s love. For a few years, I drifted from Him. During my second year in college, at Louisiana Tech University, I attended a popular Bible study on campus. It was led by a young businessman and former LSU football player. I admit I went to the Bible study because of all the pretty girls, but over time the speaker grabbed my attention. That young businessman invested in me and several of my college friends over the next three years, and that season reignited my faith and gave me a desire to walk with God and serve Him.” Monty graduated with an accounting degree and graduated from seminary with a masters in theology. His wife Kathy also graduated from seminary with a degree in religious education focusing on children. Kathy has served on church staff and been an elementary school teacher.

The Watsons have two sons. Andy, and his wife Tori, have three children and live in Canton, Georgia. And their younger son Adam, and his wife Laura, are involved in ministry in Austin, Texas.

Monty and Kathy would love to meet you, and we’d love for you to meet them. So, come visit with us one Sunday soon. Our worship service is at 10:30 each Sunday morning. COMMUNITY INTEREST LA PROPERTY OWNERS REGIONAL FINALISTS ON 2018 BBC SCOTLAND'S HOME OF THE YEAR In 2018 we entered a TV competition to select BBC Scotland’s Home of the Year 2018. For purpose of the competition, Scotland was divided into seven regions with three homes selected from each of the seven regions. Our home was selected as a finalist for the Islands Region but alas we did not win. That said, a film crew and media team arrived on Sept.01, 2018 and filmed our home and interviewed us. Our home was shown along with the other two Islands Region finalists when the series aired on BBC Scotland in April-May, 2019.

The photo at right shows us being interviewed and as is evident, I am wearing my Lake Arrowhead golf shirt.

This caused some consternation with the film director as the state owned BBC do not have program commercials and frown on logos – even small logos. It was touch and go whether I could wear it or not but the director grudgingly accepted it.

This all came to mind when we visited LA and enjoyed an excellent lunch at the Highlands Grill on September 26 just after we had returned from Scotland and stayed in Georgia for four days before heading to Florida.

After lunch, we visited the Golf Store and it dawned on me that I was wearing the very same shirt and explained it’s recent Scottish TV debut to the lovely lady who was helping me look for my size in another shirt.

$1,400 RAISED FOR LAPOA A fun-filled 3-day coach trip to Nashville on October 21 st raised $1,400.00 for the LAPOA coffers. Thirty-six participants enjoyed an informative city tour with a knowledgeable guide, along with a dinner theatre presentation at the Nashville Nightlife Theatre, in addition to a super Grand Ole Opry show.

A trip to the Opryland hotel provided a ride on the flatboats and a backstage tour of the Grand Ole Opry was very interesting.

We even were given the chance to sing on the Opry stage!.....standing in the circle of wood brought from the Ryman Theatre and installed center-stage at this newer Opry facility. This special Circle of wood was where the stars stood to entertain multitudes for so many decades from the Ryman Theatre.

Continued from last month's issue...

On Friday morning the crew awoke to much improved conditions. The fog was lifting and more importantly, the winds were forecast to fill in from the northwest at 10-20 knots.

SeaEagle was underway by 8:30 a.m. and enjoyed freshening winds throughout the day. The wind direction was perfect and soon SeaEagle was moving down the coast at optimal speeds averaging over 7 knots with occasional bursts to 8.5 knots. These idyllic conditions were soon interrupted by a large object identified 100 feet off the beam of the boat. “Whale Ho!� was shouted as a large whale surfaced near our vessel. Confirmation of the sighting was soon evident when a malodorous air drifted in our direction! Whales are noted to emit strong odors when surfacing and the crew of SeaEagle can attest to this phenomenon. As SeaEagle approached Saco Bay, they encountered strong adverse currents from the confluence of the Saco River with receding tides. Chris was at the helm and skillfully guided our vessel around numerous lobster pots and tidal surges as we approached the moorings.

After entering the anchorage, we were greeted by a friendly college student in the Biddeford Yacht Club Launch who took us to shore for hot showers and supplies.

The crew departed for Gloucester Bay early on Saturday morning under cloudy conditions and strengthening winds. The winds remained favorable from the northwest and SeaEagle made excellent progress toward her destination of the Eastern Point Yacht Club. The clouds continued to build throughout the day. As SeaEagle entered the small anchorage, a squall struck with ferocity. A confined anchorage, high winds, and a heavy full keeled cruising boat equate to a very hazard circumstance.

The Skipper and crew quickly exited SeaEagle for deeper water and found a secure spot in the bay with an available mooring ball. After the squall passed, the crew returned to the anchorage for a beautiful sunset, dinner, and showers.

The Cape Cod Canal was the destination for Sunday and SeaEagle was underway by 7:00 a.m. Exiting the harbor yielded a surprise when a large cruise ship abruptly appeared around the jetty and required an evasive maneuver by Skipper John. After avoiding the ship, the crew was greeted by blue skies,

COMMUNITY INTEREST provided a great visual backdrop of classic sailboats in an area known for its rich nautical heritage.

Tuesday morning found the crew of SeaEagle underway early for a run to its final destination at the Rhode Island Yacht Club. The crew arrived by 11:00 a.m. and secured our vessel to a mooring.

After tidying up SeaEagle and packing our bags, we hailed an Uber for the 20-minute ride to the Providence Airport. Our trip was over, and the crew was taking home more than just luggage. The crew of SeaEagle had encountered dense fog, swirling currents, intense squalls, and challenging navigation down a rocky coastline. More importantly, their voyage from Maine to Rhode Island provided for great fellowship, amazing scenery, fair winds, and temperatures in the 50’s, and white caps from a freshening breeze. The conditions were favorable and soon the skyline of Boston passed astern as SeaEagle stretched her legs toward the entrance to the Cape Cod Canal. At 2:30, SeaEagle entered the canal. The scenery along this unique waterway was diverse and included public parks, beautiful homes, and long bike paths. After motoring at 5 knots for the next three hours. SeaEagle made entrance to Buzzards Bay. After encountering stiff head winds, the crew diverted to a local anchorage at Wings Cove, a very suitable refuge for a vessel named SeaEagle.

Monday morning found the crew underway by 8:15 a.m. with winds from the west/southwest. This required motor-sailing to reach our destination of Wickford Cove in Narragansett Bay. This was a serene anchorage which

Lake Arrowhead’s talented card makers and scrapbook artists, Barb May, Gayle Matson, Patti Adams and Jean Nigro were called back to host a second card-making workshop and luncheon in the club dining room on Sept. 11. Through limiting the number of participants, the talented teachers are able to assist each student in making at least four cards.

The Halloween card used stamps, cut outs, inking and collage techniques in a card titled “Eek!” Another required painting sunflowers and two more card styles featured yarn trim, cut outs, stamping and rule highlighting.

In addition to crafting cards, the Women’s Activity Club enjoyed a delicious and beautifully presented luncheon featuring Chicken Cordon Bleu roasted in delicate pastry

Lake Arrowhead’s Women’s Activity Club meets usually on the second Wednesday of every month. Some programs are in-house at the club, others are field trips or outings to gardens and historic sights. Annual dues are $10.

For November, the Women’s Activity Club will host a show and tell luncheon for book clubs and reading enthusiasts. Sarah Martin Jones, author and book review/ wine columnist for the Lake Arrowhead Living magazine, will talk about her writing, her latest book and how she got interested in writing novels. Since Lake Arrowhead has at least half a dozen active book clubs, the Women’s Activity Club is inviting all book club members to this program on Nov. 13 at 11:30 at the clubhouse. They do not have to be members of the Women’s Activity Club to come to this event and luncheon. Cost is $18, which covers lunch and door prize ticket. New York: Riverhead Books, 2018 Of all the pinup girls who graced the lockers of GI’s in World War II, none was more electrifying than Carmen Miranda. Known as the Brazilian Bombshell, she got the hips of North America swinging to Samba.

At the age of 15, she was already a singing sensation in Rio de Janeiro where her thousands of fans bought her records like hotcakes. When Broadway producer Lee Shubert saw her perform, he immediately signed her for his newest Broadway musical where she became an overnight star. Soon, Hollywood lured her away. There she made nine films with Fox throughout the 1940’s, always dressed like an eye-popping nymph in her signature platform shoes, bare midriff outfits, and her “tutti-frutti” headwear, rolling her eyes in rhythm with her hips. Sadly, she died of a heart attack at the age of 46.

Author Frances de Pontes Peebles draws on Miranda’s life for her novel The Air You Breathe. In her story, the central character is a girl named Graca Pimental who grows up as the “Little Miss” on a sugarcane plantation owned by her father. Believing that singing is as important to life as the air she breathes, she runs away from convent school to pursue a musical career. Graca already has chosen her stage name: Sofia Salvador. “I’m going to sing on a stage,” she declares as a young girl.

“I’m going to make people swallow my songs and hold them inside. I’m going to be known. I’m going to be seen.”

Craca’s rise and fall from fame is narrated by her handmaid and best friend, Jega – a dirtpoor, dark-skinned kitchen girl who becomes Graca’s companion and friend. She narrates the story looking back from old age with a voice as sad and aching as the Sambas she later writes. Like Graca, she too dreams as a young girl of being a singer, adopting the stage name Maria Dores. “All my brief life I’d felt a perpetual ache, like a rotten tooth I could never cure,” she reflects. “Jega was not allowed to want anything beyond the most base desires of the human condition: a meal, a bed, survival.

But Dores? She’d been granted a notebook, a pencil, lessons, books, and words. She’d been granted music and an audience. She’d been granted a friend.”

Yet despite Jega’s longing to be famous, it is Graca who is truly the star, which forms the novel’s main conflict, just as her early death haunts the narrator’s tone. Whether it be for voice lessons, song lyrics, or a handsome guitarist, the two girls compete to have it all, always knowing that neither can survive without the other. For both, music is their one true love. “Music can do anything,” Jega says. “It can hit any note, move at any speed, play as loudly or as softly as our imaginations allow. COMMUNITY INTEREST Hello Residents, The morning of October the 12th came very early. Our residents were lined up before 7 a.m. ready to set up. Sister Dee had the flash light looking up your designated site number. Everyone was in a great mood. The weather was questionable, it started off very cool and gave way to a sunny day. I will alway try to accommodate your request for shade but I can never promise. As the sun rises and the earth revolves can make it pretty hard to predict shade. Next year if you join us, a good suggestion to help with the sun and weather is to put up a tent and place your items on a table for viewing. Also, a tent is more festive.

We all were looking forward to the 2 charities I had in place to take the remaining treasure you were going to donate. Circumstances took over. Linda with the Canton Community Church had a family medical emergency and to short of a notice to get another member of the church to help out. Jim Lindenmayer with the Cherokee Co. Homeless Veteran’s Program was inundated with the contributions during the yard sale. I want to thank all the residents for understanding these circumstances.

Nevertheless, I spoke to so many of you about your sales. Yes, sales were down but we still had an awesome time. Thanks to all that participated to once again made this a successful Community Yard Sale.
