FEATURED EVENTS 6TH ANNUAL NORTH GEORGIA ANGEL HOUSE CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT

Girls at the Angel House experience a stable, good environment, attend school, learn life skills and take on basic responsibilities and chores. The Annual Angel House Charity Golf Tournament devoted to raising money for this worthy cause. On May 5, 2018, the Lake Arrowhead Ladies Golf Association (LGA) and the Lake Arrowhead Men’s Golf Association (MGA) hosted the 5th Annual North Georgia Angel House Charity Golf Tournament.

Lake Arrowhead is full of generous people and volunteers. Months of work of many volunteers went into the planning of the Tournament, raffles, silent auction and enlisting sponsors. The response and generosity of the community was incredible. There were ten Corporate Sponsors (including a Gold Sponsor—Brent Scarbrough & Co., Inc.), 53 Business Sponsors and 30 Family Sponsors! The golfing community was very responsive, there were 106 players in the Tournament! Community individuals and businesses also contributed hundreds of items and gift cards to the raffles and silent auction.

The North Georgia Angel House sits just minutes away from Lake Arrowhead nestled between Canton and Waleska GA. At first glance, it appears to be just another house, but inside many things make it a home. The eight-bedroom, four bath home has been the primary residence for almost 800 girls since our inception in 2007. Our home provided shelter to 162 residents between January of 2017 and the writing of this article. Many of the reasons for the increase include the economic hardships found within family units coupled with the rise of methamphetamines and other synthetic substances sweeping across our country. The North Georgia Angel House Inc. serves females in foster care who are between the ages of 12 to 21 years old. Our philosophy is simple. We believe that every child deserves a “mulligan” and with the support of the community we are proud of our success. Once the resources are provided, we surround our girls with structure, encouragement, accountability, and a sense of purpose to help them find a direction in life that will lead to a successful emancipation. To bring about this change, we rely on a “level system” that rewards good choices with positive consequences and poor choices with negative consequences. It is our belief that this system mirrors life outside of foster care where our girls ultimately reside upon departure from care. With the support of many of our friends in the community, the girls have weekly “life skills” groups that teach basic, intermediate, and advanced skills such as planning

and preparing a basic meal, financial literacy, job readiness training, educational supportive services such as tutoring, SAT preparation and Vocational Rehabilitative Services to secure a job with benefits post foster care.

Each summer, our girls who have passing grades and demonstrate good choices, head to a much-deserved week-long trip to the beach. Our staff share quarters and meals with youth as they build upon social skills and strengthen relationships of those whom often feel much more like extended family members. The hidden purpose is to instill the value of hard work in our girls and the feeling of pride that comes with setting a goal and achieving it. We believe that this is the key to success and with the support of our community, our girls can exit care as a contributor. As our tag line goes, Giving Girls Roots. Giving Girls Wings.

Roots are grown through the relationships built in the community yet Wings are earned as our girls move away to the next chapter of life and invest in another as you have in them. We could not do the important work we do without you!

FEATURED EVENTS It was a beautiful morning on and off the golf course in Lake Arrowhead that morning. It started out with a beautiful sunrise and then became warm but overcast. Registration opened at 7:30am and volunteers checked the players in; breakfast was provided in the Clubhouse. The format was a four-person scramble. Uel Kemp, General Manager and Golf Director and Golf Pro Kevin Aines were very organized and had the carts all set-up and ready to go and provided a briefing on the tournament rules and format. A “shot gun” start was at 8:30am.

The teams starting finishing around noon. A delicious buffet lunch was prepared by Chef John Wilbert and his Team. (It was a high quality buffet and I will be back soon to sample Chef John’s new menu!) Excellent restaurant service was provided by Elizabeth Raymond and her staff.

Around 1:30pm, Uel Kemp was finishing-up the tournament results and awards were presented to the winners.

Congratulations to the Tournament winners. *Special congratulations to Jennifer Jetton—her drive was said to have been so long that it orbited the earth once before returning to the LA golf course.

FEATURED EVENTS Around 3pm, the Raffles and Silent Auctions were finalized. There was some very nice and gift certificates that were raffled off. Also, there was a wide range of beautiful and useful items available in the Silent Auction. There was some very nice art work that was auctioned off. Gail McGurk won the bid of one of the two original art works donated by Jim Bennett (please see the picture of Jim Bennett, Gail McGurk and the beautiful Jim Bennett original that she now owns).

Monies Raised at the 6th Annual Angel House Charity Golf Tournament: Each year, the Tournament has been has been more successful, raising more money than the previous year. This year was no exception! The amount raised is estimated at over $23,000—approximately $2,500 more than last year. FEATURED EVENTS The Lake Arrowhead Ladies Golf Association (LALGA) The LALGA is a wonderful way to get to know ladies in our community. We like to have fun and you will meet new golfers in a fun, friendly environment.

You will participate in activities both on and off the golf course created specifically for women of all skill levels. We invite women 18 years of age and older to join. Golf has a rich history of ‘giving back’, raising billions of dollars for local and national charities.

The LALGA follows that tradition.

We raised $20,411 for Angel House of North Georgia last year and expect to exceed that number this year. In addition to our annual charity event, a portion of our dues is set aside to support charitable organizations in our local community.

The Lake Arrowhead Men’s Golf Association (LA-MGA) The LA-MGA is an active Men’s Golf Association (MGA) at the Highlands Course. There are many opportunities to participate in the fun events that are organized by the MGA. We have all levels of handicaps; from 3 to 36 in the group.

The purpose and objective of the Association shall be to further, in every possible way, the art and the fellowship of the game of golf; to do all things necessary and proper in promoting and encouraging a standard of excellence of the game and of the facilities at Lake Arrowhead; to carry on educational and instructional programs relating to the game; to promote, sponsor and conduct golf tournaments; to maintain communications and to interchange information and ideas among the Association; the club management and the golf professional and his staff; to hold meetings of the Association; and to exert every effort to advance the welfare of the Association, its members, Lake Arrowhead, and the game of golf. Simply stated is to have fun playing the game of game on our beautiful course. Some of those events are: Weekly Dogfight: There is a Wednesday and Saturday Dogfight each week. Depending on the time of the year; the dogfights tee off with a shotgun start at either 8 or 9am each Wednesday and Saturday morning. The dogfights are a modified Stableford event with one point awarded for a bogey, two points for a par, four points for a birdie

and 6 points for an eagle. Your required points quota is established over several rounds and then adjusted each round you play based on the total points earned during the round. Your points quota is adjusted up or down depending on whether you are plus or minus as compared to your established points quota. The entry fee is $10.00 and is collected by someone assigned by the MGA Tournament Committee coordinator running the event. There is also an option skins game during the dogfight as well.

Monthly Special Format Tournaments: The MGA Monthly Special Format Tournaments are for MGA members only unless otherwise noted by the Tournament Committee. These are usually two or four man team handicapped events such as scrambles, alternate shot, best ball formats and most have a little twist to make it interesting and fun.

Entry fees are typically $15.00 for these events to cover the cost of trophies and prize payouts. Players are responsible for their club charges such as cart fee and greens fee.

Fun Activities: Part of the mission statement of the MGA is to promote the game of golf and provide fun activities for the membership. Our annual GLOW Golf Tournament is a popular event each year.

The LAMGA annual dues are $45. We currently have 80+ members and would love to have more. For more information or to join the LA MGA, contact Ralph Lumpkin at 336-520-7632.

STANDLEY & PARKER WIN THE 2018 MEMBER-GUEST After two days of golf and a sudden death shootout among flight winners, Mel Standley and his guest Jerry Parker won this year’s Member-Guest Tournament. After shooting a net 64 (8 under par) on Saturday, they followed up with a net 59.4 on Sunday to win their flight. This put them into a sudden death shootout with three other flight winners to determine the Tournament Champions. Mel and Jerry birdied the final hole in the shootout to claim the championship over Ray Champitto, and his guest, Tom Champitto.

But this was just part of the Member-Guest story line. Tournament festivities actually began at 2pm on Friday, May 18, with an optional 9-hole skins game. Official Tournament activities began the next day with an 18 hole best ball competition and a formal dinner.

Activities concluded on Sunday with an 18 hole scramble, lunch buffet, and the shootout.

The competition in all the flights was close and the food prepared by the Club was outstanding! The general consensus of the participants (members and guests alike) was that this was truly an outstanding event.

Overall 21 member-guest teams played this year. Prior to the Tournament, the Club’s professional staff divided the teams into flights according to their combined handicaps.

This helps to ensure that the teams were evenly matched during the competition. puttin 9 to 5 by Ruth Nunes If Puttin 9 to 5 sounds like a fun competition for all the LALGA… well, it sure was! We started with a wonderful deli lunch probably just like Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda would have had on their lunch break in NYC. However, I doubt if their tables were decorated as beautifully as ours with fancy hats loaned to us by Kathy Dietz.

(Turns out that these heirloom pieces were once her Grandmother’s “church hats” – how nice is that?) I’m also quite sure the 9 to 5ers did not have the excellent service Vivian always provides.

I doubt, too, that Dolly and friends wanted to have the boss join them for lunch. Not us! We were all delighted to have our General Manager and Club Pro, Uel Kemp, join us so we’d have a chance to “talk shop” with Uel

hoping for a few tips before hitting the links. Conversely, Dolly and friends wanted to distance themselves from their boss; except maybe when they kidnapped him. Uel may be in danger lunching with 20 ladies however, he’s in no danger of being kidnapped.

Uel informed us of the format which went as follows: each team was participating in a twoperson scramble, that allowed as many shots as were needed to get on Like in the movie the green. [No "Nine To Five", we problem, there, kidnapped Uel. right?] THEN, once your team was on the green you added the number of putts it took to “hole out”. Interestingly, only holes 5 through 9 actually counted for the competition. Hole number four was designated as the tie-breaker.

It was a very cool and windy day, but twenty enthusiastic, warmly dressed and steadfast ladies headed out to show off their putting skills. Every player was in the hunt and the time seemed to fly by. Arriving back at the clubhouse Uel was ready with the Leader Board. The winners were: 1st Place Representing Monday Night Giggle Golf, two very determined, intensely committed young ladies Dolores Bennett (AKA Dolly) and Judy Hale (AKA Jane). [Now that they are officially celebrities, one can already imagine a vision of their next movie, probably in which they star as golf pros. Perhaps the title will be Putting on the Ritz.] Their prize was an automatic putting cup, so they will have plenty of opportunity to practice.

2nd Place went to Peggy Flanagan and Doris Matter. Their prize was a DVD of the Movie 9 to 5. Who knows; they may be home in front of the television watching the movie and resting up for the next LALGA event.

It is just $35 to join and we welcome all levels of play. One of the great things about golf is that the idea of the “handicap” allows all players to compete on a level playing ground. CLUB BUSINESS A WORD FROM THE BILLING DEPARTMENT by Melissa Deems Thank you to those who make posting easy by including your payment stub or using their correct account number on your payments. As I pointed out in my last article, making sure your payment is posted to your account is as important to me as it is to you. This requires your assistance. You can help by doing the following: 1. List your account number(s) on your payment.

Payments cannot be posted using an address.

2. Mail payments to the address on your statement and make payments out to Lake Arrowhead Yacht and Country Club (LAYCC) 3. Don’t write checks in a hurry. This often causes errors and your check will possibly be sent back.

To prevent posting errors and ensure that your payment is applied properly to your account, use the space provided by your bank to enter your account number for online payments. Your Member ID card number should be the same account number on your monthly statements. Please be sure this is the account number you are using for your online payments.

Please pay the amount on your statement. Several times during the month, I receive calls from property owners who do not understand extra charges on their statement.

Their confusion is usually because they call several months after the charge was assessed. The description of the charge is on the statement when the charge was first placed on the account. Open your statements every month to be sure you are being charged and credited correctly. Extra charges the past several months have been mostly due to additional gate cards and remote access devices. These charges are added when the devices are received. If you have not done so already, please pick up your order in the Administrative Office above the Pro Shop.

Any person found guilty of violating these ordinances may be punished by a fine not to exceed $1000.00 and by imprisonment in the county jail not to exceed 6 months. singles for doubles by Maury Nunes As the Mixed Doubles group is well aware, there are exactly four (4) Courts at Red Cloud Park. With four (4) players on the Court in the standard mixed doubles game, the math obviously means that sixteen (16) players can be accommodated playing simultaneously.

From time to time, we have fewer than sixteen players and sometimes that leaves us with two people who can play singles. That’s a nice result, but if there’s a significant difference in abilities, which can occur, singles may not seem like an attractive option.

The less talented player may feel as though this is a hopeless task and one that may even prove to be embarrassing. The more talented player may feel that there’s no real challenge. Should they just sit it out and wait for one of the doubles Courts to have openings for the next round?

Sitting can be a downer if you feel like you’re in the groove or if you just are not ready for a rest.

Golfers use a handicap system to try to balance out players of different skills. Here are a few ideas for balancing out significantly different players, which can be used singly (no pun intended) or in combination.

2. The less talented player gets:

a. One or more extra serve; or

b. Unlimited serves, so no double faults.

3. The more talented player gets just one serve so a missed serve is the less talented player’s point.

4. The more talented player is always on the less hospitable side of the Court, which usually means facing the sun.

5. While it may seem obvious to say that one or more points can be spotted to the less talented player, that may make for games that are much shorter. Instead, require that to win a game the more talented player has to get one or two extra points.

Of course, Vince Lombardi’s quotation notwithstanding, winning is not the only thing in Mixed Doubles, but it is to be desired. The more meaningful focal points are the benefits that come from genuine exercise, camaraderie, friendship and enjoyment of the outdoor beauty and clean air of Lake Arrowhead.

1. The less talented player covers the singles count, but the talented player has to cover the doubles court on:

a. Just one side; or

b. Both.

COMMUNITY INTEREST pork barbecue sandwiches are kid-pleasing by Tommy C. Simmons, an enthusiastic cook I try to have plenty of sandwich makings on hand when the grandkids are coming to visit.

However, several pounds of sliced deli meat can get expensive, so I’ve started making pork barbecue to keep in the freezer for their visits.

After seasoning the roast, I brown or char it on all sides on a grill, if the weather is cooperative, or in a hot iron skillet on the stovetop when it’s rainy. After the meat is browned, it’s transferred to a slow cooker. By using the slow cooker, I don’t have to watch the meat, though I do usually turn it in the slow cooker at least once.

I buy a blade-end pork roast or a boston butt to cook. The preparation isn’t complicated, but does take time, 10 to 12 hours, usually. To make the cooking easier, I start the pork either on the grill or stovetop and finish it in a slow cooker.

We like cole slaw, sliced dill pickles and extra barbecue sauce on our pork barbecue sandwiches, but you can dress the sandwiches as the kids prefer.

Cajun seasoning of choice 1 onion, sliced 1 cup molasses Barbecue Sauce of choice Sliced dill pickles

Blade-end or boston butt pork roast 1 bell pepper, sliced ½ cup water Hamburger buns Cole slaw

1. Season pork roast with Cajun seasoning of choice.

2. Brown the seasoned roast on all sides either on an outside barbecue grill or in a heavy cast iron skillet on the stove.

3. Spray the inside of a large slow cooker with cooking spray and then place sliced onion and bell pepper in the bottom of the slow cooker. Put browned pork roast atop onion and bell pepper.

4. Pour molasses and water over the pork roast. Cover and cook on High for 1 hour and then lower to Low and cook for 4 hours.

5. Remove roast from slow cooker and pour off the grease and discard. Return pork roast to slow cooker and pour 1 cup barbecue sauce over the roast. My husband likes to further season the pork roast at this point with black pepper, red pepper, Tabasco with Chipotle, chili powder and ketchup.

This extra amount of seasoning does enhance the flavor of the pork barbecue but it is optional.

6. Continue cooking in the slow cooker for several more hours or until pork is falling off the bone and is fork tender.

7. Cool for several hours. We usually cool the pork roast in the slow cooker over ice in an ice chest. It’s hot and you want to cool it down before slicing or pulling apart the meat.

8. When cooled, spoon the solidified fat off the pork roast and discard. Remove the

cooked roast, which may have fallen off the bone and place on a cutting board. Slice or shred the cooked meat and return to the barbecue sauce in the slow cooker. When all the meat is cut up and the bone and fat removed and discarded, stir the meat and sauce together so that the meat is completely moistened by the sauce. Pour the meat and sauce into a large casserole dish so that you can figure out how much you want to keep out to serve and how much you want to freeze.

9. When ready to serve, I reheat a porton of the chopped barbecue pork in the microwave with additional fresh barbecue sauce and serve the hot barbecue over toasted hamburger buns. Garnish with sliced dill pickles and cole slaw, as desired.

10. Extra barbecue pork is packaged and frozen for later enjoyment.

Testing note: As mentioned, cooking is simple, but time consuming. To maximize flavor, you must drain off as much fat as possible during the slow cooking.

Mma (aka Precious) Ramotswe knows a lot about her community.

She knows that the best place to get her little white van repaired is the Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors garage owned by Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni. She knows that Godfrey Potowani now owns the Wait No More Butchery in Old Naledi. She can tell you who has most recently been convicted of diamond smuggling and their respective sentences. Plus, she knows that the best place for coffee and gossip is at the President Hotel where she meets her friends every Saturday morning.

Mma Romotswe knows these things because she is the proprietress of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency in Botswana where she has live for 35 years. She also knows that most of the crimes in her community are committed by cruel men against their wives. She learned that in her nightmare of a brief marriage to Note Mokoti, a jazz musician whom she left after her last beating. (“You are making me punish you, woman,” he say. “You are making me do this thing to you.”)

But there’s also the occasional theft of property or witchcraft case that comes her way which she solves in her own unflappable way. She takes any case that comes to her because she made it a principle never to turn anyone away.

Much of what she knows about solving crime is from Agatha Christie books and close study of “The Principles of Private Investigation” by Clovis Andersen, who offers up handy tips like not following a suspect too closely for fear of being detected. Since Mma Romotswe is a very large woman, she follows this tip faithfully.

When asked, as she often is, why she opened a detective agency with the proceeds from selling her father’s cattle herd when he passed, she will tell you: “There is so much suffering in Africa that it [is] temping just to shrug your shoulders and walk away. But you can’t do that.

You just can’t.”

Author Alexander McCall Smith knows and loves the people of Botswana from his years living there when he taught law at the University of Botswana. Throughout this first book in his ten book series, he makes mention of how the country contrasts with the Apartheid in South Africa. (The story is set in the 1960’s just after Great Britain granted independence to the country and Seretse Khama became president.).
