Cherokee County, Georgia has recently adopted an ordinance regarding short-term rentals. The purpose of the ordinance is to establish standards for short-term rentals of privately-owned residential structures rented to transient occupants, minimize adverse effects of short-term rental uses on surrounding residential neighborhoods, and preserve the character of residential neighborhoods.
2. A certificate is required to lawfully rent, operate, or advertise any property for short-term rental.
a. Owners must apply to the Cherokee County Development Services Center on an annual basis for a certificate.
b. Certificates require an initial administration fee and annual renewal fees.
3. The Certificate number must be listed in any advertisement for the rental of the property.
4. No short-term rental shall offer more than five (5) bedrooms for rent.
5. The use of outdoor speakers by short-term rentals is prohibited.

13. All powered watercraft users should slow down when passing close to anglers, nonmotorized watercraft and swimmers on rafts/tubes and minimize their wakes in coves as well. Ski boats or other high speed watercraft running parallel to NO WAKE areas should move farther out from the NO WAKE buoys so that they do not produce a potentially dangerous wake in the designated NO WAKE areas.

Our course looks great with great work done on many bunkers to improve the drainage, decrease depth and enhance the view from the tee. The greens were aerated in April and look GREAT! Our MGA has 97 members currently and growing. We have handicaps that range from single digits to 25+. We welcome all players into our MGA (annual dues of $60)! We play dogfights on Wednesdays and Saturdays that use a stableford point system to allow all players to compete fairly amongst each other. We also have monthly tournaments (approximately 15 per year) on Saturdays that have varied team formats and are flighted by handicap ranges to enable great fun and good competition amongst your peer level golfers.
So, if you are someone that enjoys the game of golf, is renewing your interest in the game, or are just starting out playing the game - the MGA is a great place to have fun playing golf, meet new people in the LA community, and enjoy our wonderful golf course. Your membership in the MGA ($60 annually) provides access to our dogfights, tournaments, quarterly MGA meetings (with dinner and beer provided), hole in one fund winnings when made during an MGA event and an annual tournament of champions shootout for our cumulative top 10 in points earned in play in our flighted MGA tournaments. We are also active in supporting multiple charity golf tournaments each year.
If you have interest in learning more about our MGA or becoming a member you can reach out directly to Jeff Ciupak (jeff.ciupak@gmail.com or call/text 404-461-3377), or you can always stop by the pro shop at the course and speak to the golf staff. We would love to have you a part of our Lake Arrowhead MGA!

LGA SEASON KICKS OFF WITH SPIRIT AND SPORTSMANSHIP
The end of March marked the official start of our Ladies Golf Association (LGA) season. We extend our sincere gratitude to our dedicated Board members—Arra Bolding, Natalie Teuton, and Paula Hall—for their continued leadership and support of the LGA. We also warmly welcome Cynthia Samuels, who was elected Secretary during our Spring Kickoff Dinner and is serving in this role for the first time.
Although the rainy and chilly weather in April and May led to lower participation, we made the most of the clear days, enjoying camaraderie, impressive shots, and plenty of laughter. In April Glenda Hinton, Karen Fullerton, Cheryl Davis, Karen Helm, Ruth Nunes, Arra Bolding, and Paula Hall participated in our 9-Hole Scramble. Congratulations to Paula Hall, who, despite playing solo, claimed 1st Place—an outstanding accomplishment!
The LGA was well represented at one of our club’s favorite annual events benefiting the Kathy B. Davis Foundation. This inspiring organization supports and creates lifeenhancing opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental challenges. Our members showed their support by playing, sponsoring, and volunteering. Special thanks to Roz Waldron for her tireless preparation and to volunteers Kathy Duerr, Mindy McCutcheon, Linda Reynolds, and Vee Johnson. Patti Adams, Paula Hall, Arra Bolding, Glenda Hinton, Eleanor Gibbons, and Martha Elkins enjoyed the event alongside their spouses and significant others. As Glenda Hinton noted, “We were showered with great memories.”
One of the fun aspects of the tournament was the presence of LGA’s beloved Queen, Dolores Bennett, and Carol Burton

at Hole 17. With their warm smiles, they offered players a fun opportunity to take an extra shot in the Hole-in-One contest—an offer that was hard to resist.
In May, Roz Waldron, Patti Adams, Arra Bolding, Grace Kreft, Ruth Nunes, and Paula Hall participated in the Cat Fight, enjoying a spirited and friendly competition. Congratulations to Paula Hall for achieving her target points and earning 1st Place, and to Ruth Nunes for securing 2nd Place.
During several recent Giggle rounds, Janice Larkin, Jennifer Harding, Tommie Simmons, Natalie Teuton, and Cynthia Samuels recorded birdies, showcasing their strong play. Christy Stewart delivered a remarkable performance with three birdies on the front nine and another on Hole 12. As Jan Benefield enthusiastically noted, “This girl is on fire.” Congratulations, Christy, on an outstanding round! And let's not forget the excitement of a Hole in One, like Jan Benefield's impressive shot at the Canton Golf Course, Peggy Flanagan and Lynn DeWolfe's amazing shots at our home course. It's moments like these that make all the practice and hard work on the course worth it. Congratulations Jan, Peggy and Lynn!
If you are new to the community and either play golf or are interested in learning, we warmly invite you to join us on Monday afternoons for a relaxed round of Giggle Golf, followed by a casual social gathering on the patio. To learn more about participating, please contact the Pro Shop, and they will connect you with our LGA President, Arra Bolding.

N.B. Lake Arrowhead Trivia utilizes a mnemonic with the 1st letter of each of the 25 answers (or phrase 1st substantive word (e.g. title) or last name if a person) in order, spell a message. Figuring out the mnemonic yields no extra credit, but can be a valuable hint for questions that might stump you.

READING FOR THE AGES
by Jeanne Schwartz
Wild Dark Shore | Charlotte McConaghy | Flatiron Bo
There is an island between Australia and Antarctica, home to a family of four who are the last remaining residents. Shearwater is home to a research station that is quickly being swallowed by the sea, and a doomed seed bank that was supposed to house millions of seed varieties in the event of a climate crisis, which is now happening in real time. Dominic Salt and his children Raff, Fen, and Orly live in the non-operational light house, amongst the penguins, seals, and whales, waiting for the Navy ship to come and collect them and the seed bank.
Most of the researchers have already left, and violence and mental illness have taken the lives of others who had lived and worked there. Someone has also destroyed the communications system, making pleas for help impossible. But Dominic is committed to saving the seed bank and waiting what should be seven weeks for the ship’s planned arrival.
The family is wild and isolated. Dominic’s wife died giving birth to Orly 9 years ago, but her spirit keeps company with Dominic every night. Raff plays haunted violin in whale song, and merges his music with their voices. Fen lives on the beach, away from her family, and spends her time under the frigid water for longer and longer periods. Orly is dedicated to the seeds, and spends his time sorting what they will be able to take with them when they leave, because the temperature is rising every day, and the permafrost that was supposed to keep the seeds safe is melting at an alarming rate. Entire cabins have already collapsed into the sea, and there are daily storms and floods.
Into this tableau, Fen sees a body draped on a tangle of driftwood in the ocean. A woman washes in, barely alive. Rowan has come in search of her husband, the lead researcher on the island who has sent her a call for help. But he is not there, and she barely survives with the help of the Salt family.
Back home, Rowan has survived a horrendous loss: she built a home with her own two hands, planted flowers and trees and lived in the midst of birds and animals in an idyllic setting. But a raging wildfire took everything, and when that happened her husband left her for
Shearwater. His call for help now, though, sent her across the sea in a flimsy boat, and she is now in the midst of this strange and feral family, wondering what has happened to her husband. He has said he is in danger.
This book is full of dark secrets and mysteries, made more opaque by the family’s inability to communicate with each other. The author keeps you guessing which suspicions are valid, which are paranoia, and who is culpable for doing what in the face of calamity.

But here they are. Facing death by fire, drowning or starvation. Bearing the huge burden of saving seeds that could one day save humanity. Young Orly, though, is mesmerized by the wild seeds, and as he sorts what will be taken he leans towards seeds that will never provide food for humans, but sustain wild things.
Rowan and Dominic feel a pull towards each other, and the bond between Rowan and each of the children grows, as well. Rowan never wanted children, but she watches and understands the beauty and power of the three of them. As she learns each of their secrets they become more precious to her.
“The world is dangerous and we will not survive it. But there is this. Impermanent as it may be. It is the nature of life that we must love things with our whole selves, knowing they will die.”
Dominic muses that “maybe we will drown or burn or starve one day, but until then we get to choose if we’ll add to that destruction or if we will care for each other.”
Watching this family, plus one, struggle against nature, men’s secrets, and interpersonal relationships in the midst of environmental chaos makes for a twisty, suspenseful read that is at the same time deeply atmospheric.
I highly recommend it.

The fictional Shearwater Island is based on Macquarie Island, a subantarctic island halfway between Tasmania and Antarctica. Macquerie is a World Heritage site, home to over four million seals, penguins, and seabirds. The seed vault is based loosely on the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, the tunnel of which flooded in 2016 due to melting permafrost.
Macquerie was an easy target for oil exploitation in the late 19th ad early 20th centuries. Sealers hunted the fur seals to extinction, and then went on to nearly wipe out the elephant seals and the royal and king penguins.
HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN?
Perhaps this question conjures up memories of a beloved old Southern gospel song as it does for many! But today’s question is, “How long has it been since you looked at your contact information in the Lake Arrowhead Online Owners Directory to confirm that it is current and correct?”
Yes, we do have an Online Owner Directory found on the lapoaga.com website. For those of you unfamiliar with the Directory, it is located on the Owners Login tab within the site, which, to maintain privacy, requires a username and password to log into. You must be a Lake Arrowhead property owner and request permission to access the portal from our IT Administrator. Once you have your log-in credentials, click on the Owners Login tab in the upper right corner of the home page, enter your username and password and then click on Online Owner Directory under Categories. You will find three documents there:
1. current owners listed by name
2. current owners listed by street name
3. a fillable pdf version of the LAPOA Directory Information Form
If you find your information contains an error in either Directory, please download the Directory Information Form and follow the directions for submitting the form so your information can be revised. The directories are updated once a month by a Lake Arrowhead Directory Committee volunteer, so we ask you to make sure the changes you have requested are made the month after submitting your form. PLEASE NOTE: Fill out the form completely, not just the corrections you want.
If you want your information included and you do not find it, please submit a Directory Information Form at your earliest convenience, and we will make every effort
to see that your neighbors know how to contact you. Again, you need to check the following month to make sure everything is listed as you want it to appear.
If you do NOT want any listing regarding your property to appear in the Directory, please submit a Directory Information Form, checking the box in Step 1 indicating your choice and sign it at the bottom. Doing so allows us to remove your name from the “Pending” file in the master database and eliminates the need to contact you individually.
On a separate note, over the past many years we have had a printed directory provided every other year to Lake Arrowhead residents free of charge. In addition to the resident directories, this printed version contains quite a bit of valuable information regarding our community including street and trail maps, local and state emergency contacts, area resources, vendor advertising and official communication channels. Over the years it has been very well received by Lake Arrowhead residents. The next issue of this biannual booklet is due to be published in 2026, but work must begin in September of this year to meet publication deadlines. We do not currently have a project leader for this publication, so it will NOT happen unless a volunteer steps forward to take on that role. If you are interested, please contact the LAPOA Directory Committee by emailing lapoadirectory@gmail.com. Detailed directions, existing files from previous editions and mentors are available to assist throughout each step of this process, so please consider joining our team to accomplish this goal.
Thank You!
The
Lake Arrowhead Directory Committee
