SHORT-TERM RENTAL ORDINANCE CHEROKEE COUNTY, GEORGIA
Cherokee County, Georgia has recently adopted an ordinance regarding short-term rentals. The full ordinance is available at ShortTermRentalOrdinanceCherokeeCounty20210806.pdf (cherokeega.com), but we wanted to make each property owner aware of this ordinance and have highlighted a few of the key points in the ordinance.
1. The purpose of the ordinance is to establish standards for short-term rentals of privately-owned residential structures rented to transient occupants, minimize adverse effects of short-term rental uses on surrounding residential neighborhoods, and preserve the character of residential neighborhoods.
2. A certificate is required to lawfully rent, operate, or advertise any property for short-term rental.
a. Owners must apply to the Cherokee County Development Services Center on an annual basis for a certificate.
b. Certificates require an initial administration fee and annual renewal fees.
3. The Certificate number must be listed in any advertisement for the rental of the property.
4. No short-term rental shall offer more than five (5) bedrooms for rent.
5. The use of outdoor speakers by short-term rentals is prohibited.

ARCHITECTURAL EXTERIOR WORK POLICY
When an Exterior Work Permit is approved, the owner will be sent an 8 ½ x 11 permit that shall be placed in a window on the first floor of the property. The blue permit sign indicates that work on the property was reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee.
DRY STORAGE
A FREE dry storage decal will be mailed to those who rent a space. This decal must be visible and placed on an item. In addition each trailer, camper, RV, motorhome and watercraft must also display a current decal. If you drive it, you need a vehicle decal. 1. All requirements set forth in the Georgia Boating Safety Act shall apply on Lake Arrowhead lakes (Lake Arrowhead and Lake Chickasaw). This includes carrying life preservers for passengers and crew.
2. Only registered watercraft displaying a current Lake Arrowhead registration decal are permitted on Lake Arrowhead lakes.
3. All watercraft operating in the northern part of Lake Arrowhead, as well as other areas with NO WAKE buoys, must use a speed that generates no wake.
4. The body of water viewed from the Marina area (a.k.a. main lake) is an all sports area. All motorized watercraft are to follow a COUNTER CLOCKWISE direction.
5. At slow speeds, traffic can go in either direction on the lake ONLY in these locations: Within 100 ft North of the dam, within 100 ft South of the Narrows "No Wake Buoys", and in the middle on an East/West straight line to/from "Honeymoon Cove."
6. All watercraft pulling people (i.e. skier, tuber, etc.) must have either two (2) persons aboard (one driver and one safety observer at least 12 years of age) or the watercraft MUST be equipped with a wide angle rear view mirror so the driver is aware of the location of the person being pulled at all times. All people being pulled MUST wear approved U.S Coast Guard life vests.
7. The number of skiers is limited to two (2) per boat at the same time. As soon as one skier drops the second skier must drop immediately thereafter. Skiers should raise one (1) ski, wakeboard, or kneeboard while in water with a slack towline to warn other boats in the area.
8. All occupants of canoes, rowboats, hydro paddle-boats, SUPs, kayaks, etc., should wear appropriate life vests. These vessels should stay close to a shore (Georgia law requires children 10 and under to wear a life jacket at all times on a boat unless the child is in an enclosed cabin).
9. All watercraft must use running lights after sundown. Use docking lights when approaching a docking area only, they can be blinding to other boaters.
10. Swimming in the lake is not permitted in and around the Marina area other than in the designated Swimming Area. All children, below a responsible age, swimming in the lake must wear a life vest and be supervised by an adult 18 years of age or older.
11. Personal watercraft (i.e. Jet Skis, Wave Runners and SeaDoos) are PROHIBITED on Lake Arrowhead.
12. Drunkenness, drug use, rowdy behavior, obscene language and littering are not permitted on the lakes.
13. All powered watercraft users should slow down when passing close to anglers, nonmotorized watercraft and swimmers on rafts/tubes and minimize their wakes in coves as well. Ski boats or other high speed watercraft running parallel to NO WAKE areas should move farther out from the NO WAKE buoys so that they do not produce a potentially dangerous wake in the designated NO WAKE areas.

DRIVING IN LAKE ARROWHEAD WITH WILDLIFE
To drive safely in Lake Arrowhead with our heavy deer population, reduce your speed, stay alert, and pay attention to road signs. At night, use your high beams to increase visibility but switch to low beams when you see oncoming traffic. If you encounter an animal, brake firmly without swerving to avoid losing control or startling the animal into your path.
DURING YOUR DRIVE
• Reduce your speed: Drive at or below the speed limit, especially in areas known for wildlife.
• Use high beams at night: This increases visibility, but switch to low beams when you see oncoming traffic.
• Scan the road and surroundings: Be vigilant and look for animals not just on the road but also on the shoulder.
• Be prepared for more than one: If you see one animal, be aware that more may follow.
IF YOU ENCOUNTER AN ANIMAL
• Do not swerve: Resist the urge to swerve, which can cause a loss of control or cause the animal to run into the car.
• Brake firmly: Apply the brakes steadily and firmly.
• Honk your horn: Use the horn to alert the animal to your presence.

• Stay in your lane: If a collision is unavoidable, try to hit the animal while remaining in your lane, and if you can, brake firmly at the same time.
• If you hit an animal please inform the Security Team.
DEER FAWNING SEASON AND RUTTING SEASON
Fawning Season [late Spring through early Summer] female deer give birth
Rutting Season [October through December] bucks (males) are in mating mode
During these seasons, deer movement increases with baby fawns and bucks chasing doe - please drive with extra vigilance.

ATTENTION PROPERTY OWNERS AND MEMBERS
On November 11, 2025, we upgraded our credit card processing system. This change was necessary to offer you an additional, more convenient payment method: ACH withdrawals directly from your bank account. As part of the transition, all previously stored credit card information has been deleted from the old processor’s secure servers.
CRITICAL ACTION REQUIRED: If you use a credit card for recurring monthly payments, you must visit or call the Administration Office at 770-721-7912 so we can re-enter your credit card information or assist you in selecting a different payment method.

We would also like to inform you of an important upcoming change: beginning January 1, 2026, a 2.95% convenience fee will be applied to all charges on accounts paid with a credit card. This fee will not appear until your account is charged on January 30, 2026.
Please note that payments made by check or through the new ACH option will not incur this fee. Additionally, the convenience fee will not apply to purchases made in the Pro Shop or Grill when you pay as you go by credit card. The fee will only apply to maintenance fees and items charged to your account that are paid by credit card at the end of the month. Please be aware that any maintenance fees paid by credit card, regardless of when the payment is made, will incur the convenience fee.
After extensive review, the LAPOA Board and LAYCC management determined that this change is necessary. The Club currently absorbs all credit card processing fees, which are projected to exceed $200,000 this year alone. Redirecting these costs will allow us to allocate more funds back into the community—most significantly toward infrastructure improvements.

READING FOR THE AGES
by Jeanne Schwartz
The Stone Raft | Jose’ Saramago | A Harvest Book: Harcourt, Inc.
First, if you have never read a Jose’ Saramago book, you should. Blindness comes to mind, but there are many others. He is a “fabulist” – a writer of fables – and this may be his best book to date.
Second, it is difficult to summarize, and so I am going to take the liberty of quoting book reviews written by people more adept than I can be without spending more hours than I have. Credit to the Los Angeles Times for much of what appears here – although I have included my favorite passages as examples of his gorgeous writing.
At the start of “The Stone Raft,” a river that flows from France into Spain disappears into the ground. Soon a rift appears, bisecting the Pyrenees lengthwise; in a day or two the rift is 30 feet wide. The entire Iberian Peninsula has broken off from Europe and begun to head west across the Atlantic; slowly, at first, and then at a rate of some 30 miles a day.
Hundreds of thousands of Spaniards and Portuguese take to the road to explore a world that is suddenly finite and utterly changed. Tourists flee and so do investors.
But this story is about the questing journey of five people (and a dog) who come together from five different parts of their floating peninsula: their land voyage set atop an ocean voyage.
Each touches at some point the supernatural phenomenon that sends Iberia gadding about. At the same moment that the rift in the Pyrenees appears, the following has just taken place:
Sassa, strolling on the beach near Oporto, idly picks up a 13-pound stone and heaves it into the water. Instead of plopping, it soars, comes down on the water, skips up again and keeps on skipping until it reaches the
horizon. Anaico, walking near his village, is suddenly joined by a host of starlings that follow him wherever he goes. Pedro Orce, a small-town Spanish pharmacist, stamps his foot and from that moment on, the ground never stops shaking beneath him. Joana Carda, at the moment of the crack, had drawn a line in the dirt with an elm branch: herself on one side, Coimbra on the other. However persistently it is scraped or dug over, the line cannot be erased.

She and the three men go to inspect it. A mastiff appears with a bit of blue thread in his mouth. By various canine signals (“Man proposes, dog disposes”), the mastiff leads the tiny crowded car through Portugal and up to a farm on the northern Spanish coast. Maria Guavaira, who lives there, had been unraveling a blue sock at the moment the rift opened. The mastiff had appeared at her door, bit off a length of thread, headed south and returned with the others.
You will need to read the book to know and learn about the characters. But the narrative, and their conversations convey philosophies of life which will serve to introduce you to the magic.
“If you should have a son one day, he will die because you were born, no one will absolve you of this crime, the hands that make and weave are the same hands that dismantle and undo, right engenders wrong, wrong produces right. Poor consolations for a man in distress – there is not consolation, I’m afraid – man is a creature beyond consoling.”
And: “Perhaps experience has a greater effect on society as a whole than on individuals, society takes advantage
of everyone’s experience, but no one wishes, knows, or is able to take full advantage of his own experience.”
The Stone Raft takes up geo-political ramifications – as you can imagine, since the world has just changed – and demographics: twelve or fifteen million children would be born almost at the same time, “crying out in chorus to the light.”
But the stories of the five people and their dog, their adventures amidst a surreal event, are what give The Stone Raft its magic.

Saramago's novels often deal with fantastic scenarios. In his 1995 novel Blindness, an entire unnamed country is stricken with a mysterious plague of "white blindness.” His novel Death with Interruptions (also translated as Death at Intervals) takes place in a country in which, suddenly, nobody dies.
Saramago addresses serious matters with empathy for the human condition and the isolation of contemporary urban life. His characters struggle with their need to connect with one another, form relations and bond as a community, and also with their need for individuality, and to find meaning and dignity outside of political and economic structures.

All players are welcome to join, level is approximately B5 ALTA and 3.0-3.5 USTA. Courts are reserved for this Doubles group during the times mentioned previously. If you would like to join, please send your name and CELL phone number to Jill Rose (770-313-0073). You will be added to our telephone message list which goes out the night before each match and you will be able to see who has signed up to play for that day. This will also let you know if there are at least 4 people available for that day. Please come join the fun with us.
To check to see if a court is available, you may contact Membership at membership@lakearrowheadga.com or phone 770.721.7912. ALTA TEAM PLAY is based out of BridgeMill as Lake Arrowhead is outside the ALTA boundaries. Call 770.720.9635 or email pat.perry@hmsgolf.com.

HOW TO SUBMIT CONTENT FOR THE MAGAZINE
All content for consideration as well as all correspondence regarding Lake Arrowhead Living Magazine should be directed ONLY to layccnews@ gmail.com. This is an integral process in place for checking to be sure all content received has been considered for each particular month's publication. Items sent to any other email address will possibly be omitted.
The layccnews@gmail.com account is set up to send an automated response to incoming email messages. THIS IS THE ONLY CONFIRMATION YOU WILL RECEIVE. If you send multiple emails over the course of a few days, Gmail will limit the amount of automated responses released. Please be aware of this and take note that sending additional messages is not necessary.
Note that Lake Arrowhead Living is published monthly (12 issues per year) in an overlapping format that covers 2 months of content at a time. For example, the January issue will promote January and February events and will feature articles submitted by the content deadline covering happenings that took place in prior months.
New content is always due by the 1st of each month to be published in the next month's issue on the following deadline schedule. Please note that the 1st of the month is a HARD deadline for all content unless previously discussed and planned with the layout designer. This means that if you do not have a standing dedicated section of the magazine, your content is considered "new" and the deadline of the 1st applies.
Jan 1 for the Feb issue
Feb 1 for the Mar issue
Mar 1 for the Apr issue
Apr 1 for the May issue
May 1 for the Jun issue
June 1 for the Jul issue
July 1 for the Aug issue
Aug 1 for the Sept issue
Sept 1 for the Oct/Nov issue
Oct 1 for the Nov issue
Nov 1 for the Dec issue
Dec 1 for the Jan issue
Those with standing dedicated sections have a grace period for submission decided by and agreed upon with their layout designer.
Note that all submissions are subject to review and not all will be published based on content, time restraints, and space restrictions. If your content is approved but time/space restrictions apply, your submission will be held for publication at a later date.
TECHNICAL SPECS FOR MAGAZINE SUBMISSIONS
Photo Files should be submitted as separate image attachments to an email message. All photos should be high-resolution (at least 300 ppi at intended full print size). JPG file formats are preferred for all photo file submissions. DO NOT EMBED IMAGE FILES in your email or in the body of a Word Doc or Google Doc. Image files MUST be sent as separate attachments to be considered for publication.
If formatting is important, please send a PDF document instead of a Word document. Please resubmit your article to all fit on ONE page and formatted the way you would like it to appear. Place any images in the document prior to generating the PDF. The page size is 8.5" x 11" with a top margin of 1" and left/right/ bottom margins of .375". This is the only way to guarantee formatting preferences as all articles open in a plain text document stripped of all formatting (bold, bullet points, etc)
PDF Files should be submitted as separate image attachments to an email message. All PDF files should be high-resolution (at least 300 ppi at intended full print size) with outlined fonts to ensure consistency across all devices. DO NOT EMBED PDF FILES in your email or in the body of a Word Doc or Google Doc. PDF files MUST be sent as separate attachments to be considered for publication.
Written Content should be submitted in a digital format like Word, Google Docs, or just simply typed into the body of an email. Content should be fully edited and ready for publication when sending. Content is not edited or corrected for grammar, spelling, or context.
