Birdie Tree - Eleanor Gibbons, Roz Waldron, Arra Bolding and Paula Hall

Play Dates - Natalie Teuton, Arra Bolding, Patti Adams

Congratulations to our winners on your fantastic achievements in the game!!!

Although this meeting is held every year at the end of our golfing season (March-November) to honor and award those whose game has improved, it is also a wonderful time to socialize. This year was particularly different as it was all about “transition” as a new Board has been elected for the next 2 years.

Delores Bennett, Kathy Duerr and Ruth Nunes volunteered for the 2023 election board committee. They did a great job of seeking and interviewing potential candidates. Their search included candidates for President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.

A BIG THANK YOU to the Election Board Committee and all who stepped up to run…we had some great and qualified candidates!

The New Board for 2023 will be:

Arra Bolding – President

Natalie Teuton – Vice President

Ruth Nunes – Secretary

Paula Hall – Treasurer (a big thank you to Paula who very graciously agreed to stay in this important position!!!)

Activity/Theme Team - Grace Kreft and Mindy McCutcheon (thank you both for agreeing to stay in this position)

We acknowledged and thanked our outgoing board members:

President - Jan Garbiel

Vice President- Cindy Rincon

Secretary- Joan Eberhardt

The 2022 Season has ended, but this is Georgia, and we play all year long. Hit ‘em straight. Hope to see many of you on the links and in the Spring for the 2023 Season. You can always reach us at lakearrowheadlga2021@gmail.com

2. A certificate is required to lawfully rent, operate, or advertise any property for short-term rental.

a. Owners must apply to the Cherokee County Development Services Center on an annual basis for a certificate.

b. Certificates require an initial administration fee and annual renewal fees.

3. The Certificate number must be listed in any advertisement for the rental of the property.

4. No short-term rental shall offer more than five (5) bedrooms for rent.

5. The use of outdoor speakers by short-term rentals is prohibited.

L.A. PICKLEBALLERS WIN NATIONAL SILVER MEDAL by Maury Nunes

Two years ago, both Scott Spielman and Joe Nicolette had never played pickleball. But each of them had the same experience shortly after moving to Lake Arrowhead:

Each of them and their respective wives, Patty and Lisa, had all played their share of tennis, and each of the couples heard about Lake Arrowhead Pickleball and went to take a look. Like so many who play pickleball here, they met Bill and Carole Hess.

Bill Hess advocated for expanding Lake Arrowhead’s facilities for the community and now acts as our ambassador to the sport. Bill and Carol are also excellent teachers and proceeded to teach the couple the basics, and to encourage the couples to try organized tournaments

Joe and Scott met each other through Lake Arrowhead Pickleball as relative novices and after playing a while they found their skills compatible and they teamed up to start playing in tournaments.

Many of their early tournament style matches came under the umbrella of North Georgia Pickleball - "The Farm", in Canton. The round robin play and finals matches there prepared them for the style of play in organized tournaments. As couples, the

sports
& fitness

Nicolettes and Spielmans also continued playing with the Lake Arrowhead regulars on many Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays in the open play format of constantly changing partners. Lake Arrowhead play also introduced them to many other residents, some of whom became among their closest friends. The couples also sometimes play against each other, which proved a neat way to gauge relative strengths and get quick feedback of ways to improve.

All four players were allowed to enter a lottery to the national tournament after they placed second in the USA Pickleball Southeast Diamond Regional held at Opelika, Alabama. Joe and Scott were delighted to receive a bid as a “Wild Card” Team in the 3.0 ranking lottery (Mens’ 60-64 age group) for the week-long amateur and professional U.S.A. Pickleball National Championship Tournament, held November 5-13 in Indian Wells, California, near Palm Springs.

Without a great deal of notice they made arrangements, hopped a plane and were off to that lesser L.A. (Los Angeles) on the way to Indian Wells. The competition in the six matches and eleven games they played was often stiff with many of the opposing players ranked higher. As late tourney entrants and with a lack of recorded tournament matches, Joe and Scott were slotted into the seventh seed position.

Despite the time zone difference and the partisan crowd rooting for the #1 Seed California Team, Joe and Scott proceeded to battle through the main draw and play back round to earn their spot in the gold medal match, where they placed second for a Silver Medal in a best of three game finals. Pretty good for the Wild Card!

Among the highlights:

-Winning four of their six matches in straight 2-0 victories, without needing a third game.

-Losing a tough main draw match to #1 seed Californians, then battling back from a deficit in the play back round to earn their spot in the gold medal match

-Beating the #1 Seed Californians two games in the Gold Medal round, before succumbing in a sudden death game to 15

READING FOR THE AGES

The Book of Two Ways

Dawn McDowell’s head and heart are trapped in her past. She was a pre-eminent Egyptology doctoral student, completely at home in the tomb she was excavating and obsessed with The Book of Two Ways, a set of hieroglyphics and illustrations that together describe the way a soul can get to Ra – or Heaven. There are two lines, red and black. One describes the water route, and one the land route.

While in Egypt, she fell in love with a fellow student/ competitor with the exact same interests, although his was about the translation of the language, and hers about the translation of the drawings. Perfect partners, but looking for the other to try to claim credit or gain an advantage. They go through the ritual dance of courtship – as much as can happen in the heat and sand of Egypt – and although they started as “frenemies” passion wins out.

Then, Dawn got a call that her mother was dying. She left Egypt, went home to Boston, caring for her mother until she died, and staying to raise her half- brother until he eventually made his own way – handsomely - as a neurosurgeon. In any case, Dawn’s career was de-railed and her love was a world away.

In her encounter with her mother’s hospice, Dawn discovered she was good at listening and helping people who were dying. She became a death doula in Boston, a person who will go through the dying process with her client, grabbing ice cream cones at 3AM if they want one, taking them to parks or museums, talking and listening to them (and their partners) throughout the death journey. Death doulas do everything except the medical part. No dispensing of medications, etc.

She also married.

The book is split into alternating chapters: Land/Egypt and Water/Boston, and Dawn’s life in each place is fully realized. Interestingly, her husband Brian is a quantum physicist and believes it to be true that people can live in different “timelines” simultaneously (think Schrödinger’s Cat). Indeed, that is the way the book reads: Dawn with her two lives; one with the love of her life Wyatt, in Egypt, and one with her husband and daughter Meret in Boston.

In Boston, Dawn takes a client named Win, a woman Dawn’s age who is dying from cancer, and as the two

women become increasingly closer, Dawn is able to speak openly and frankly to Win about death. “The thing about death is that we’re all terrified of it happening, and we’re devastated when it does, and we go out of our way to pretend that neither of these things is true.”

In Egypt, Dawn learns over time that Wyatt might be wrong about the point of life. Maybe it’s not about documenting the lives and deaths of the great Egyptian kings -or anyone. Maybe it’s not about accumulating knowledge or love. Maybe it’s about accumulating regrets.

In Boston, both Dawn and Win mourn forced choices they made, and what they have missed in their lives. And while they are grateful for what they do have, neither feels able to live without the grand, destined love they were meant to have. Dawn confesses that “sometimes the past is more important than the present.” So Win writes a letter to the love of her life when she is very close to death, and asks Dawn to fly to London and deliver it.

At this point, the story begins to move very quickly, and clarity comes to the reader in a beautiful choreography of love, tenderness, pain, regret, and kindness.

The beauty of the book itself is in the idea of two timelines twinned with the two ways of reaching Ra. The breathtaking discoveries within the tombs in Egypt, The Book of Two Ways found within the tombs contained in words and images are relevant and timeless.

And of course, the “two ways” can mean many things.

In my opinion, Jodi Picoult has improved book over book for quite some time. The Book of Two Ways is illustrative of her narrative power, sense of plot, and personal empathy. She has published 28 novels, beginning in 1992. The Book of Two Ways was published in 2020, and three have been published since. Her last ten novels have debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list.

Green & Growing

Welcome to 2023! Yes, January is traditionally one of the coldest months here in Georgia, but a little chill shouldn’t stop you from getting things done in the landscape. December saw unusually warm temperatures, so maybe the first month of the new year will surprise us too!

The colder months are the best time to plant new trees and shrubs, so get to digging! Most plants’ growth is halted by cooler temperatures, meaning they are less demanding for nutrients, so this time of year the focus is on root establishment and growth. When installing something new, it’s always best to surround the base of the plant with mulch, but never up against the trunk or main stem.

Light pruning can be done on trees now. Do corrective and ‘clean up’ pruning on trees while you can see the branch structure, before they leaf back out. Start by pruning dead or diseased limbs, then ones that are crossing. And while some vegetative growth on the ground has died back, now is a good

time to chop bamboo, English ivy and kudzu back while you can get to the main stems of the plant.

Plant things with winter blooms, like pansies and hellebores! Pop them in garden beds, sprinkle a little Osmocote fertilizer around each one, and then cover each with a handful of mulch before watering them in. And there’s still time to plant bulbs, like daffodils and irises.

This is the month we’re likely to see our first “hard freeze” of the year. But what’s the difference between a frost and a freeze? Frost is visible on plants, windshields, etc. and can occur when temps are ABOVE freezing, and it all depends on dew point as well. If the dew point is below freezing, a frost is more likely. Freezing is when the air temperature is literally below 32 degrees. And a freeze can come without a frost.

A “hard freeze” is when the temperature drops further, below 28 degrees, for a longer time. It will kill the top growth of most perennials and root crops, BUT a hard frost doesn’t mean plants are dead

though. Even after your plants have died back to the ground, the soil may be warm enough, so the roots are still growing.

And finally, what to do with that live Christmas tree? I am fortunate to be able to throw ours in the woods behind our house, and I am delighted to see birds and deer nesting by it. Some local parks and usually Home Depot stores offer to chip your tree, producing usable mulch.

Cheers to many new garden opportunities in the coming year!

Believe me, been there, done that. We all have things around the home that while we know they would work better if we had them serviced, well, they are working now and that’s good enough for me.

A properly maintained home is important, and all it takes in most cases is a phone call.

With our New Year’s resolutions still fresh in our minds here are some things you absolutely need to have serviced this year…

HVAC SYSTEM.

Get a service contract and have your air conditioner inspected by a pro this spring and your furnace inspected by a pro this fall. Your systems will run more efficiently, your filters will be changed, and you will save money on your home energy bills.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

Your electrical system wears down over time. Get a whole house electrical inspection and make sure it includes your smoke and CO detectors.

GARAGE DOOR.

What? My garage door? You bet. It’s the largest moving piece of equipment in your home and you rely on it every single day.

The once over will do it a world of good.

SEPTIC TANK.

When’s the last time you had your septic tank cleaned out? While it’s not an every year job, it’s something that you need to have done every 3 years. Think of it this way - when your a/c goes out you are hot, when your electrical goes out it’s dark. What adjective best describes a bad septic situation? Exactly…

WATER HEATER.

You know the average life span of a water heater in this area is 7 years. How old is yours again? Right. Have a professional come out and check it out. Make sure they check the T&P valve and that you have an expansion tank.

While they are there have them check your home’s water pressure. High pressure is the evil villain to the inner workings of your faucets and commodes.

DUCTS.

Your ducts work every day carrying the cool or warm air to the rooms in your house and return air and dirt back to your unit. Do yourself a favor a have them professionally cleaned.

A good, professional cleaning will have you breathing better and can possibly cut down

on the amount of dusting you have to do around the house. It will also increase the life and efficiency of your hvac system. Extra good news - barring unforeseen circumstances you won’t have to have them cleaned for another 5-7 years.

ROOF.

How long has it been since you had a roofing pro inspect your roof? Most quality roofing companies offer a free roof analysis which will let you know the exact shape of your roof.

Plus, having a qualified roofer inspect your roof gives you the ability to tell the storm chaser roof guy “No thanks - I already have a professional inspection”.

Sweet.

Been putting off basic homeowners chores?

Winter in Atlanta is usually mild, and it’s not out of the question to experience afternoon temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s during the month of January.

In fact, the warmest January day in Atlanta occurred on January 11, 1949 when the thermometer reached 79 degrees.

But temperatures in January can be very cold -- well below freezing and even below zero!

Averaging out all the highs and lows in the month of January, the average monthly temperature is 44.8 degrees, the coldest average monthly temperature of the year for Atlanta.

The coldest morning in January occurred on January 21, 1985 when the thermometer dropped to minus 8 degrees Fahrenheit. January 1982 was also bone-chilling cold, as the thermometer dropped to minus 5 degrees.

Another note about January 1982: Long-time Atlanta residents will remember the Snow Jam of January 12-14 1982, when 4 inches of

snow, sleet and freezing rain fell throughout Metro Atlanta, paralyzing the city. A total 7 inches of snow fell that January, marking the third snowiest January in Atlanta’s history.

Snow Jam History repeated again in 2014 when 2.6 inches of snow fell during the morning and early afternoon of January 28. The city was paralyzed in melted snow that turned to ice under car tires. Thousands of people were stranded on the interstates and surface streets, and many spent the night freezing in their cars or walking home in non-walking shoes. Many more spent the night in grocery stores.

Other notable winter weather events in the month of January include January 23, 2000, when an ice storm struck Atlanta one week before the city was set to host the NFL’s Super Bowl. As many as 500,000 people were without power that day as freezing rain accumulated on trees and powerlines.

This storm was a stark reminder of the importance in keeping a weather-ready emergency kit in our vehicles. Always keep an extra blanket, jacket, pair of walking shoes, water, and non-perishable snacks in your vehicle in case weather leaves you stranded on the road for numerous hours.
