RULES OF THE LAKE

1. All requirements set forth in the Georgia Boating Safety Act shall apply on Lake Arrowhead lakes (Lake Arrowhead and Lake Chickasaw). This includes carrying life preservers for passengers and crew.

2. Only registered watercraft displaying a current Lake Arrowhead registration decal are permitted on Lake Arrowhead lakes.

3. All watercraft operating in the northern part of Lake Arrowhead, as well as other areas with NO WAKE buoys, must use a speed that generates no wake.

4. The body of water viewed from the Marina area (a.k.a. main lake) is an all sports area. All motorized watercraft are to follow a COUNTER CLOCKWISE direction.

5. At slow speeds, traffic can go in either direction on the lake ONLY in these locations: Within 100 ft North of the dam, within 100 ft South of the Narrows "No Wake Buoys", and in the middle on an East/West straight line to/from "Honeymoon Cove."

6. All watercraft pulling people (i.e. skier, tuber, etc.) must have either two (2) persons aboard (one driver and one safety observer at least 12 years of age) or the watercraft MUST be equipped with a wide angle rear view mirror so the driver is aware of the location of the person being pulled at all times. All people being pulled MUST wear approved U.S Coast Guard life vests.

7. The number of skiers is limited to two (2) per boat at the same time. As soon as one skier drops the second skier must drop immediately thereafter. Skiers should raise one (1) ski, wakeboard, or kneeboard while in water with a slack towline to warn other boats in the area.

8. All occupants of canoes, rowboats, hydrobikes, paddle-boats, SUPs, kayaks, etc., should wear appropriate life vests. These vessels should stay close to a shore (Georgia law requires children 10 and under to wear a life jacket at all times on a boat unless the child is in an enclosed cabin).

9. All watercraft must use running lights after sundown. Use docking lights when approaching a docking area only, they can be blinding to other boaters.

10. Swimming in the lake is not permitted in and around the Marina area other than in the designated Swimming Area. All children, below a responsible age, swimming in the lake must wear a life vest and be supervised by an adult 18 years of age or older.

12. Drunkenness, drug use, rowdy behavior, obscene language and littering are not permitted on the lakes.

13. All powered watercraft users should slow down when passing close to anglers, nonmotorized watercraft and swimmers on rafts/tubes and minimize their wakes in coves as well. Ski boats or other high speed watercraft running parallel to NO WAKE areas should move farther out from the NO WAKE buoys so that they do not produce a potentially dangerous wake in the designated NO WAKE areas.

2025 BRIMMER HIGHLANDS CUP

The Brimmer Highlands Cup is an event dreamed up by Ward Brimmer and a few other golfers 17 years ago to spice up Lake Arrowhead’s golfing experience through some good-natured competition among Golf Club members. Two golf members have participated in all 17 events, Sandy Reynolds and Rick Salese.

Modeled after the Ryder Cup between U.S. and European golf professionals, the Brimmer Highlands Cup has two captains who are responsible for selecting team members, setting tournament rules, and working with Golf Club management on Tournament details. This year the Red Team Captain was Jeff Ciupak. The Blue Team Captain was Vic Martin. Each team included 20 members.

Matches on the first day of competition were played by 2-person teams in three different formats – best ball, scramble, and alternate shot. The Red Team ended the first day of competition with a 15.5 -14.5 lead. Second day matches were a shamble on the front 9 and singles on the back 9. The Red Team increased their lead at the end of the front 9. The front 9 ended with the Red Team ahead 21 – 19. The Red team pulled away on the back 9 winning 11.5 of 18 possible points. The final results were Red 32.5 and Blue 27.5

In what was a very competitive event, the Red Team broke the Blue team’s nine year winning streak!

Special thanks to all the staff in the Pro Shop and The Highlands Grill for all they did to help make the Highlands Cup a successful and fun event.

READING FOR THE AGES

Inner

Lucy Hunt is the commander of a mission to the International Space Station. Her crew has three Americans: Ezra Wendley, ex-Air Force; Lafeyette Summers, a Black botanist from Louisiana; and Devaki Anand, an Indian-American billionaire traveling as a space tourist. In addition, two Russian cosmonauts joined the crew: Anton Kovalyov and Lev (whose last name is never mentioned). The Russians had a separate module on the ISS, but the crew was to gather for meals and meetings as they each carried out their assigned scientific research tasks on the ISS, including a “space walk” to repair damaged photovoltaic panels on one of the wings – Lucy’s first.

This space-based political drama takes advantage - as all space-based stories do - of the isolation the characters face, and the unmistakable need to cooperate and survive. It turns out that Devaki is suffering from near-constant nausea, and is unable to carry out mission tasks to which she had been assigned. The other four follow their routine of three hours of mandatory exercise, planned experiments and regulated nutrition and physical assessment, dealing with the zero gravity environment which meant, among other things, diapers, sleeping bags that float in space, and numerous inconveniences.

Their resourcefulness and resolve is tested very early on by a solar flare that confines them to their sleeping quarters and cuts off communications with the ground, most notably Steve Ayers - who is the Deputy Director for Crewed Space Flight at NASA - for 45 minutes. During their confinement, while the station was being bombarded by the solar wind, they heard a noise – a clang. The next day Lucy received a message about an increase in ammonia concentration on-board.

Curious, Lucy reviews the footage from the surveillance cameras and watches as a slight dent appeared on the wall opposite the treadmill. And not far away, floating in the air – a screwdriver.

From there, the action increases, and the tension ratchets up continuously. Where did the screwdriver come from? Does it have anything to do with the ammonia concentration that keeps rising – slowly, but worrisome?

Suspicion grows as Anton bars contact with Lev, saying only that he is busy/ill/can’t be disturbed. Why?

On the ground, after Lucy has disclosed the dent and the screwdriver to Steve, NASA begins scenario building, focusing on a theory that the Russians are trying to sabotage the flight to provide an excuse for de-coupling their segment of the module prematurely. The U.S. segment would not have enough time to re-configure the ISS to operate independently.

Pressure is on to discover the source of the ammonia leak, the mysterious dent in the wall and the absence of Lev.

At one point, Steve instructs Lucy to retrieve a pistol that had been stored on-board. It is missing.

To disclose more would be to reveal spoilers. But the obvious is not the plot. It turns out there are more interpersonal dynamics at play among the six astronauts than could have been envisioned… and on earth Lucy’s husband Nate is undergoing a crisis of faith after losing his resolve of noninterference, hacking into Lucy’s computer and discovering footage from a few years ago that simultaneously sheds new light and new mystery on the dynamics of the ISS crew.

Inner Space is a taut, propulsive mystery in space. Part political drama, part character study, and a lot of space tension: the space- walk itself would make the story worth reading.

Highly recommended!

Jakub Szamelek’s book was originally written in Polish. Kasia Beresford translated it into English. She reported that she had to immerse herself in diagrams of the ISS modules, watch footage of Soyuz rocket launches, scan clips of NASA astronauts’ daily routines to see whether their sleep stations had one door or two (the Polish word for door is always plural, so she couldn’t tell from the Polish text), and research the constituent parts of carabiners in both languages. Her efforts paid off.

Happy Holidays

from your friends at Front Porch Atlanta!

We’re so grateful for the amazing advertisers and neighbors who make our community special. Here’s to joy, peace, and prosperity in the New Year!
