On July 19th & 20th, 38 Lake Arrowhead golf members played in the 2025 Member – Member Golf Tournament. Always competitive, this year’s tournament was no exception. Jeff Ciupak and Mel Standley won the low gross score honors! Cash and Cole Burchett won the overall low net score.

The Member – Member Golf Tournament is an annual event where golf club members form 2-person teams to compete for trophies and prizes plus the honor of being named Tournament Champions for the year. The tournament format is known by several names (four ball, best ball, and better ball) but whatever it is called, it essentially requires each team member to play their own ball.

At the end of each hole, the lowest individual score is recorded as the team score. This year’s tournament was divided into 3 flights: First, Second, and Third. The winners were:

TAKE A SECOND

LOOK AND SHARPEN YOUR SAFETY

In a world of constant movement and digital distraction, it’s easy to rush through life without truly seeing what’s around us. But when it comes to personal safety, sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is take a second look.

That extra glance — up, down, and around — can be the difference between safety and risk. Whether you're walking through a parking garage, entering a public space, or simply crossing a street, adopting a habit of mindful observation can drastically improve your personal security.

Here are five essential safety principles that show how taking a second look can make all the difference:

1. BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS

Too often, we move on autopilot — checking messages, daydreaming, or focusing on our destination rather than the journey. Situational awareness means being mentally present and actively scanning your environment for people, objects, or activities that seem out of place.

Take a second look: Who is near you? What are they doing? Are there any unusual sounds or movements? This level of awareness can help you anticipate and avoid potential threats or dangers before they happen.

2. LOOK UP, DOWN, AND AROUND FOR HAZARDS

Don’t limit your awareness to what’s right in front of you. Physical hazards can exist in every direction — from icy steps to lose wires or unmarked construction zones.

Take a second look:

• Up for overhanging branches, broken lights, or unsecured items.

• Down for cracks in the pavement, spills, or uneven surfaces.

• Around for approaching people, vehicles, or blind corners.

• This habit not only prevents injury but also keeps you ready to respond quickly to changing environments.

3. ALWAYS KNOW ALL THE EXITS

In an emergency, knowing how to get out quickly can save your life. Whether you're at a concert, in a theater, or just visiting a building for the first time, make it a priority to locate more than one exit.

Take a second look when you enter any area:

• Where is the main exit?

• Is there a back door or side stairwell?

• Would you know how to get out if the lights went out or the main path was blocked?

• The few seconds it takes to notice these details could make all the difference during a fire, threat, or natural disaster.

4. DON’T WALK WHILE LOOKING AT YOUR PHONE

Looking at your phone while walking disconnects you from the physical world. Your field of vision narrows, your hearing is reduced, and your body language signals distraction — making you both a less capable mover and an easier target.

Take a second look — not at your screen, but at the world around you. Keep your head up, shoulders back, and stow devices until you’re in a safe place to stop and check them.

5. DESIGN YOUR SURROUNDINGS WITH

SAFETY IN MIND: Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) The spaces we inhabit can either invite risk or promote safety. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a framework used by urban planners and security professionals to discourage crime through smart design.

Take a second look at the environments you frequent:

• Are walkways well-lit and clearly marked?

• Is there natural surveillance — meaning, can people see and be seen?

• Do fences, signage, or landscaping guide behavior and limit access?

• Is the area maintained, clean, and cared for?

• These design elements don’t just improve aesthetics — they actively deter criminal activity and foster a sense of ownership and security.

FINAL THOUGHT: AWARENESS IS YOUR FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE

“Take a second look” is more than a catchy phrase — it’s a mindset. It means not rushing, not assuming, and not letting routine dull your attention. It’s about being deliberate with your observations and proactive with your safety.

Personal security doesn’t require paranoia — it requires presence. So, the next time you step outside, enter a room, or check your surroundings, remember to pause, scan, and join us in taking that second look. It might just be the one that keeps you safe.

For many years Lake Arrowhead residents have had a printed community directory provided every other year free of charge by a local printing company. In addition to resident contact information listed both by name and by street name, this printed version contains a wealth of valuable information regarding our community including street and trail maps; trail descriptions; local, county, state and emergency contacts; area resources; vendor advertising; and official communication channels.

Over the years it has been very well received and appreciated. The next edition of this biannual booklet is due to be printed in 2026, but work must begin in September of this year to meet publication deadlines. Currently, we do not have a project leader for this community resource, so it will NOT happen unless a volunteer steps forward to take on that role.

Detailed directions, existing files from previous editions and mentors are available to assist you throughout each step of this process, so please consider joining our team to accomplish this goal. If you are interested and would like to have more information, please contact the Directory Committee by emailing lapoadirectory@gmail.com.

Thank You!

READING FOR THE AGES

The Names | Florence Knapp | Viking

The Names, Florence Knapp’s debut novel, starts with a simple premise: Cora is reminded by her husband, Gordon, to register the birth of their new son while he is at work.

So Cora goes to the registrar’s office with their nineyear-old daughter Maia and the baby boy. There she has a decision to make: should she name the baby Gordon, following her husband’s family tradition; should she choose Julian, meaning sky-father, the name she loves; or should she follow the whims of Maia and go for Bear, which the little girl thinks “sounds all soft and cuddly and kind… but also, brave and strong”?

From there the story divides. The novel follows this family along three paths, each section jumping ahead a few years and showing what happens when the boy is named Bear, Julian and Gordon.

In each of the story’s timelines, Gordon strenuously objects to his son’s name being anything other than Gordon. Cora, however, views it as a small act of defiance to for once make a choice that she concludes is hers alone. Her situation at home contributes to her conviction that she should pick a name that feels right to her, rather than blindly following her husband’s desire for a named heir.

The narrative paints a portrait of the family at seven-year intervals — 1987, 1994, 2001, 2008, 2015, culminating in 2022. Its premise — that a name can shape your destiny — sets up a sort of thought experiment and promotes contemplation about the what-ifs of different paths a life can take. How will the boy’s future be related to or determined by his name? In fact, each future is different. But, the central background of the story is that although each timeline sets up a different set of circumstances, Gordon is and remains an abuser. Cora’s fate, and that of her children, hinges not on a name but on whether she will leave her abuser before someone dies. Cora’s sense of herself and how lost and disconnected she feels from her own life seem to eliminate any of the possibilities

she had believed her life held for her. The violence, gaslighting and cruelty Cora endures at the hands of her husband, an outwardly respectable medical doctor, underpins everything. Their daughter Maia, is an observer to what goes on inside the family home, and in the version of her life where her brother is named Bear, as she wished, she understands early the dynamic of her life.

At one point when her father is at a boiling point, Maia intercedes.

“And Cora realizes her daughter has learned what to do. How to soothe, to placate. That just through watching, the first time she’s stepped into this role, she is already accomplished. If it doesn’t stop, Cora thinks, this pattern will repeat unendingly, the destiny of each generation set on the same course.”

The most poignant glimpse into Cora’s circumstance, for me, was this passage. “Gordon once told Cora that a butterfly’s average life span is twenty-nine days. She wonders, when she adds up these moments where she exists out in the world, if her lifespan will be any longer. And which would be better? To have those days boiled down into one intense burst of color, or to have the pin removed from the thorax every now and then, dusty wings fluttering back to life, a little more time eked out before being locked away again.”

Bear/Julian/Gordon’s life is definitely affected by the choice of his name. As Gordon, he is courted by his father to form an alliance against his mother. He drinks his name-sake gin, works strictly with numbers and not with people, is casually abusive to the girls and women in his life. Maia offers to him at one point a potential get-out-ofjail-free card for his behavior:

“You were rewarded for being awful to Mum, before you’d had a chance to.. I don’t know, form your own conscience I guess.”

Bear and Julian also live up to their names. Bear becomes an anthropologist, Julian an artist. Their points of view on their parents’ marriage differ based on how their timelines play out.

It would be a mistake to consider this book depressing. There are moments of beauty and a constant love between a mother and her children. And love does prevail, in some form or fashion for the son and daughter in their parents’ orbit. But the central fact that regardless of her son’s name Cora’s life is buried by her circumstance points out the overwhelming impact of a domestic abuse.

Overall, 22% of individuals have been assaulted by a partner at least once in their lifetime (23% for females and 19.3% for males). Abuse can be defined as either expressive (in response to a provocation) or coercive (intended to monitor, control and/or threaten).

There are also differences between physical abuse and emotional abuse; fully 80% of individuals have perpetrated emotional abuse at least once in their life.

Across studies, 40% of women and 32% of men reported expressive abuse; 41% of women and 43% of men reported coercive abuse. In fact, rates of female-perpetrated violence are higher than male-perpetrated (28.3% vs. 21.6%).

The national domestic abuse prevention hotline is available 24/7 at 800-799-SAFE (7233). You can also text “START” to 88788.

If you love to play Pickleball or would like to learn, please read on. We have an active group of players at multiple levels, and play times for each group are listed below. We play at the Red Cloud Pickleball and Tennis Center near the Red Cloud Pool. The only requirement is that you are a Lake Arrowhead resident or registered guest.

If you are new to Pickleball or want to play for fun and exercise, please join our Recreational Group. The intermediate and advanced groups are for experienced players who want to advance their skills to compete in leagues and/or tournaments.

We want everyone to enjoy Pickleball and understand that play on the LA courts is ‘’at your own risk.” Players should come in athletic attire, wear court shoes (pickleball or tennis shoes) and bring a PB paddle, sunglasses/ protective eyewear, visors and/or hats. Players should be aware that like any sport, warming up, having the propergear, bringing water, towels, and stretching afterwards are all important components of a successful, injury free experience.

For more information or to be added to our weekly email list, please email the group leaders listed..

You will be added to our telephone message list which goes out the night before each match and you will be able to see who has signed up to play for that day. This will also let you know if there are at least 4 people available for that day. Please come join the fun with us.
