2025 ST. PATRICK’S DAY TOURNAMENT
64 golfers played in the most unique tournament format of the year. The 4-person scramble format is very common but we add a twist to this event. Each player can only use 4 clubs! The partners cannot share clubs. This added a touch of difficulty and fun as each golfer had to decide which clubs to use and how best to maneuver around the course. For example, most golfers used a putter as one of their four clubs while a few others decided to leave their putter at home and used a driver or other club to putt.
FIRST FLIGHT:
1st Place – TC Chapman, Ralph Lumpkin, Eddie Martin, and Michelle Maynard
2nd Place – Lee Heubner, Jeff Howell, Bill Maynard, and Sean Webb
3rd Place – Andrew Chlebek, Joe Farrell, Jacob Fennela, and Todd Roberts
4th Place – Larry Adams, Jon Finley, Mike Stein, and Rex Wallace
SECOND FLIGHT:
1st Place – Eleanor Gibbons, George Gibbons, Keith Gervickas, and Mike Zito
2nd Place – Paul Bolding, David Davis, Mike Heath, and Ron Travis
3rd Place – Brian Benavides, JC Cardinale, Scott Burpie, and Jerry Sandberg
4th Place – Deb Bettencourt, Cash Burchett, Amy Burchett, and Cole Burchett
The field was divided into two flights and awarded Pro Shop gift certificates to the top four teams in each flight. Using this process, the winners with the overall lowest score were TC Chapman, Ralph Lumpkin, Eddie Martin, and Michelle Maynard. They overtook the field with back to back eagles on holes 9 & 10!

READING FOR THE AGES
by Jeanne Schwartz
Enchantress of Numbers: A Novel of Ada Lovelace | Jennifer Chiaverini | Dutton
Augusta Ada Byron was born to the famous poet Lord Bryon and Anne Isabelle (Annabella) Milbanke. Annabella was on the opposite end of the temperament spectrum from Lord Byron: he was passionate, headstrong, irreverent. She held virtue, reason and self-control as guiding principles. Their marriage was somewhat of a surprise, even to them.
Augusta Ada Byron was born on December 10, 1815 – named after Lord Byron’s half-sister, with a middle name plucked from somewhere. Just over a month later, Annabella had had enough of her husband’s callous disregard of her and his blatant transgressions with others and left with Augusta Ada – to be known henceforth as simply Ada.
Annabella’s experience with her husband had a significant impact on Ada’s life, as her mother forbade any practice or action that might make Ada impetuous and creative like her father. Fairy tales were forbidden. Walks in the forest where fairies were discussed were forbidden. Math and science were prized. Ada was talented at both – especially mechanics - and could always understand how something was supposed to work. Her formal education, beginning at age 6, reinforced this.
As a child, Ada developed what could charitably be called a “theory” called “Flyology” which emerged from her study of birds and convinced her she could develop a method of flying. This would prove to be the start of a lifetime of dedication to science and mathematics, always while keeping at bay the imagination and instinct that were the birthright of her father.
Ada’s studies introduced her to Mrs. Mary Somerville’s book Mechanism of the Heavens, which in turn introduced her to Mr. Charles Babbage, who had created a Difference Engine –and later an improvement called the Analytical Engine. Her imagination on fire right next to her intellect, Ada glommed on to this project as if it were her life’s work.
Eventually, she was pressured to marry: it was her third Season, after all, and she “dressed for balls as if I were donning armor for battle, a reluctant soldier in the war upon spinsterhood.” As always, her goal orientation prevailed, and she married William Lord King in 1835. Here, too, her gender offended her: William Lord King would receive thirty thousand pounds, along with the Wentworth estate, while Ada would receive “pin money” for her own expenses. Even when the new Queen Victoria elevated William to be the first Earl of Lovelace, Ada was simply Lady Lovelace.
Ada gave birth to three children but lacked maternal instinct. She essentially “farmed them out” to live with other relatives. It seems she viewed them as an impediment to her work, which increasingly became interwoven with the Analytical Engine invented by Mr. Babbage. She grew to know more about the device than anyone but Mr. Babbage himself.
She also took it upon herself to “manage” him as he acted like a bull in a china shop with anyone who did not instantaneously grasp the genius of his machine, or – God forbid –failed to support him monetarily in its development.

He disclosed to her early on that to house the machine would take up as much space as a small building, but the power it had to create algorithms (not the name at the time!) was immense. Ada developed the concept of punch cards for programming the machine – a key ingredient to its versatility – and she was committed to illuminating the scientific community of its power.
She eventually wrote a “Memoir” as she called it, to accompany Babbage’s submission to a scientific journal. Written under the by-line AAL so as not to disclose to the readers that she was a woman, and wholly her original work, Ada came to a realization so impactful that it changed the way she viewed her life in the past, present, and future.
“In writing the Memoir, I had discovered something astonishing about myself – that my genius resided in my ability to synthesize abstract ideas, to marry the intellect and the imagination into a new kind of insight.”
Her mother’s attempts to suppress Ada’s imagination had finally failed, as Ada embraced her truth. She was christened by others as the “Enchantress of Numbers” for her ability to describe complex theories so as to be apprehendable by the public. Her description of how the proposed Analytical Engine could be programmed to compute Bernoulli numbers: “the Analytical” she said, “weaves algebraic patterns, just as the Jacquard-loom weaves flowers and leaves.”
The story is long and, in many cases, convoluted as it divulges family secrets, the impact of politics and the power of wealth, and it is fascinating. And as for Ada Lovelace herself, she is known by many scholars as the world’s first computer programmer.
While not a part of her life from the age of eight weeks on, Lord Byron’s instincts and imagination were bequeathed to his daughter. One of his most famous works was on beauty, written it seems about a cousin with whom he had a child:
She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that's best of dark and bright Meet in her aspect and her eyes.

If you would like to join, please send your name and CELL phone number to Jill Rose (770-313-0073). You will be added to our telephone message list which goes out the night before each match and you will be able to see who has signed up to play for that day. This will also let you know if there are at least 4 people available for that day. Please come join the fun with us.
TENNIS PRIVATE PLAY is always encouraged; to help, we provide a roster of the known players who live in Lake Arrowhead. This is kept within the tennis community and not shared outside Lake Arrowhead - contact Maury Nunes at 770.720.5003 or man.apc@ outlook.com. To check to see if a court is available, you may contact Membership at membership@lakearrowheadga.com or phone 770.721.7912
ALTA TEAM PLAY is based out of BridgeMill as Lake Arrowhead is outside the ALTA boundaries.
Call 770.720.9635 or email pat.perry@hmsgolf.com.
PICKLEBALL
If you love to play Pickleball or would like to learn, please read on. We have an active group of players at multiple levels, and play times for each group are listed below. We play at the Red Cloud Pickleball and Tennis Center near the Red Cloud Pool. The only requirement is that you are a Lake Arrowhead resident or registered guest.
If you are new to Pickleball or want to play for fun and exercise, please join our Recreational Group. The intermediate and advanced groups are for experienced players who want to advance their skills to compete in leagues and/or tournaments.
All Pickleball courts are considered RESERVED during these group play times:
RECREATIONAL: Mon/Wed/Fri at 9am and Sat at 10am
INTERMEDIATE: Mon/Wed at 4pm and Sat at 8am
ADVANCED: Tues/Thurs/Sun at 4pm
PLEASE READ: We want everyone to enjoy Pickleball and understand that play on the LA courts is ‘’at your own risk.” Players should come in athletic attire, wear court shoes (pickleball or tennis shoes) and bring a PB paddle, sunglasses/protective eyewear, visors and/or hats. Players should be aware that like any sport, warming up, having the proper gear, bringing water, towels, and stretching afterwards are all important components of a successful, injury free experience.
For more information or to be added to our weekly email list, please email:
Recreational Group: Michael Ballard, mfbkat@hotmail.com
Intermediate Group: Brian Hatfield, briandh1956@gmail.com
