“Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.” – Confucius
I never thought I’d say this – but Confucius is my guy. He knew –long before you and me – that music was one of the things we as human beings cannot do without. We’ve all heard the quote “music is the universal language”. Confucius takes it much further.
Here at HMCKC, we are celebrating pride – which happens to be one part of our mission statement. We celebrate pride year round, but especially during June when the country is celebrating Pride month along with us, and when there are so many opportunities to showcase the incredible talent of the Chorus.
The last few years have been tough for all arts organizations. But with the support of our friends, HMCKC has survived. We’ve presented choral theater from Cher to Disney and from pageants to princes. We’ve sung at a host of community events, the opening of the new airport terminal, and the Disney 100 opening at Union Station. We’ve told our stories through the music we love – because human nature cannot do without it.
I can’t wait for you to hear the phenomenal songs that are presented in this concert – along with the incredibly inspirational and personal stories being told. The stories told in music and narration are as poignant as those told in my protest days in the 70’s and 80’s – and as we fight for our equal rights, social justice for everyone, and the joy of loving who you love, we will sing on. No matter what.
We have grown in so many ways during this season, and have so many things planned for our 39th season but we can’t do it alone. As most of you know, ticket sales only provide about 30% of our annual operating budget. As our fiscal year comes to an end, please give whatever you can to support our vision of singing to inspire a world of love and acceptance – something that the world and our country desperately needs. Visit hmckc.org, and please give generously. We thank you for your support.
Now sit back and enjoy the concert!
Welcome to Rise Up! – an evening of powerful music and storytelling, bringing down the curtain on our unforgettable Season 38! And what a journey it’s been: from our Evening of Note performance with Ann Hampton and Liz Callaway to the heartwarming holiday musical, A Very Merry Christmas Pageant. We leapt into 2024 in collaboration with The Folly Theater’s Children Series for the boundary pushing world premiere of My Shadow is Pink, featuring our small ensemble, The HeartAches! With our continued audience growth, we added a Friday night to our weekend performances for Princes of Pop and just weeks ago, we helped Union Station with both music and magic as The Disney 100 Exhibition arrived in Kansas City! We aren’t done yet – after our performances of Rise Up! we’ll be joining The Kansas City Women’s Chorus, Choral Spectrum, and Outside Voices in Minneapolis, MN for the GALA Choruses Festival 2024!
Rise Up! is more than a performance; it's a rallying cry, a celebration of the unyielding human spirit. Through our music, we honor our legacy of delving into critical social justice issues that touch not only our home community, but the world at large. Tonight’s show tackles racial injustice, women's rights, religious acceptance, housing insecurity, mental health, and the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ equality. Each song and each deeply personal story shared by our members, serves as a powerful reminder of the challenges we face and the incredible resilience we have to overcome them.
The Heartland Men's Chorus has always used music as a transformative force, championing acceptance and fostering a community that cherishes diversity and inclusivity. This evening, our performance aims to illuminate these urgent issues, provoke thoughtful reflection, and inspire meaningful action. As you immerse yourself in tonight's music and stories, I invite you to contemplate the themes we explore and think about how you can contribute to positive change. Together, we can Rise Up! and build a world that is more just, compassionate, and inclusive.
As always, we can’t do what we do best without our incredible audiences! Thank you for being here alongside our continued legacy of singing to inspire a world of love and acceptance!

HMCKC would like to extend a very special thank you to the entire staff and crew of The Folly Theater.
we can’t sing without your support
Heartland Men’s Chorus Kansas City is the largest LGBTQIA+ cultural organization in the Great Plains. We’ve witnessed so many wonderful changes over our 38 years of singing, yet many challenges still exist, especially in Kansas and Missouri. Only with your support can we continue to make a difference!
Despite the progress and setbacks in the Supreme Court or in the voting booth, people make decisions based upon what is in their hearts and minds. That’s why HMCKC creates programming that is musically excellent and socially relevant at a time when people are seeking clarity and understanding of neighbors, friends, family members and themselves.
When Heartland Men’s Chorus sings, the entire community benefits. We have also sung at hundreds of events in support of area non-profit organizations including the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund, Literacy Kansas City, UMKC Pride Breakfast and so many more.
It’s not fake news when The Kansas City Star writes: “Heartland Men’s Chorus is one of the most beloved artistic institutions in Kansas City.”
HMCKC is recognized as one of the premier LGBTQIA+ choruses in the nation from an artistic and administrative perspective. HMCKC is widely respected for its performances at national GALA Choruses Festivals, statewide conferences and performances throughout the region. Being a leading arts organization is only possible with strong commitment from our members, staff and patrons. Thank you for your support of our voices and our mission.
Your tax-deductible contribution can be mailed to: Heartland Men’s Chorus Kansas City, PO Box 32374, Kansas City, MO 64171-5374. You can also contact us by phone at (816) 931-3338 or by e-mail at hmc@hmckc.org. Even faster and easier is the option to make a secure contribution online at hmckc.org – just click the “Donate” button on the Support page. All donors to the Annual Fund are acknowledged in our programs for a period of 12 months from the date of donation. We strive to keep this list as accurate as possible. Latin, meaning “to the stars.” this phrase symbolizes our feelings for the members of HMCKC who have passed ad astra.
they have all been stars in our eyes.
Through a bequest to Heartland Men’s Chorus, you can show your continued support for our work. Heartland Men’s Chorus Legacy Society is a group of donors who have remembered the Chorus in their estate planning. A list of Legacy Society members will be included in each program. How to be a good host... The best gift to give... What to do when the holiday stress kicks in...
our vision
Singing to inspire a world of love and acceptance
There is room for everyone in Heartland Men’s Chorus Kansas City: singers, non-singers, men, women, old or young. You can become a part of Kansas City’s most unique Chorus!
INTERESTED IN SINGING WITH HEARTLAND MEN’S CHORUS?
Auditions for new singers take place at the beginning of each concert cycle, in September, January and April.
First, come check us out! You’ll have a chance to get to know us by coming to our first two rehearsals of the concert cycle on Tuesdays from 6:30–9:30 p.m. in Founders' Hall at Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral (13th Street and Broadway in downtown Kansas City, MO). Contact the chorus office (hmc@hmckc.org) so we’re ready to welcome you! After that, you’ll schedule a short vocal audition with our artistic director. If all goes well, the final step is attending our New Member Orientation and you’re in! If you can’t wait, or you’ve missed the start of the cycle, you are invited to visit rehearsal any time.
INTERESTED IN NON-SINGING OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE CHORUS?
Those who don’t sing or can’t make the weekly rehearsal commitment are invited to join our nonsinging fifth section, HeartLight. This group gives an opportunity for interested people to be members of the Chorus and provide a wide range of essential support functions. HeartLight members are incorporated into Chorus events as their personal schedules permit. If you would like to know more about HeartLight, or you would like to volunteer specific skills to the Chorus, please contact the Chorus office at (816) 931-3338 or hmc@hmckc.org.
