DUDLEY HOGUE
It’s great to see you at Princes of Pop and thank you for your support of the Heartland Men’s Chorus Kansas City.
We are excited to be presenting our annual “pops” concert for the third year in a row! We began with Whitney, then After All - 60 Years of Cher – and those shows sold so well that we’ve added a third performance to Princes of Pop As with anything “new” it will take time to build audiences for three, but so far the response has been phenomenal.
I can’t believe we’re already halfway through the concert season! It seems like only yesterday when we were planning for this series of concerts. And now, we’re planning for an epic 39th season that will catapult us into our 40th Anniversary year! And we have SO many things planned to celebrate singing OUT for 40 years. If you would like to be a part of the planning for any of that, please contact me at dudley@hmckc.org. It will be a fabulous year where we celebrate our birthday, our members (former and current), our supporters and audience members.
As you know, we can’t sing to inspire a world of love and acceptance without your financial support. A small part of our budgeted income is raised by concert ticket sales, and we need your help to build community, celebrate pride, and empower authenticity, and a very exciting opportunity is coming up soon. Elevate 2024 – our spring fundraiser will be held on May 19 at CPKC Stadium - the brand new stadium built for the KC Current on the riverfront! Mark your calendars now, and look for more information soon. Of course, there are many ways to give to HMCKC, and gifts of ANY size are gratefully accepted and appreciated because every single dollar counts as we fulfill our mission and vision.
Now sit back, enjoy the concert – and support the Chorus however and whenever you can!

SHAWN CULLEN
Welcome to Princes of Pop!
Tonight, we embark on a musical journey that spans over six decades, celebrating the vibrant tapestry of male pop music and its indelible mark on the soundtrack of our lives. The essence of pop music lies in its ability to tell stories – stories of love, heartbreak, joy, and the fight for freedom and acceptance. It's a universal language that transcends boundaries, connecting deeply with the human spirit. From the groovy beats of the 1960s to the boundary-pushing sounds of today, male pop artists have been at the forefront of this storytelling, crafting anthems that resonate with all of us, irrespective of who we are or whom we love.
However, our journey tonight is more than a celebration of musical milestones. It is a tribute to the courage and resilience of artists like Elton John, George Michael, Boy George, The Village People, Prince, David Bowie, and Sam Smith. These icons, who identified as members of the LGBTQIA+ community, wielded their artistry not just to entertain but to advocate for visibility and authenticity at a time when both were fraught with personal and professional risk. Their music became a beacon of hope and a source of strength for many within the LGBTQIA+ community, many of our singers on stage tonight included! In their melodies, we found solace, in their lyrics, affirmation. They taught us the power of living one's truth in the face of adversity and the importance of celebrating our identities with pride. Through their artistic expressions, they pushed societal boundaries, challenged norms, and played a pivotal role in the ongoing fight for equality and acceptance.
As we relive the hits that defined generations, let us also remember the journey of these remarkable artists. Let their music remind us of the progress we've made and the road that still lies ahead. Let their legacy inspire us to continue advocating for a world where love is celebrated in all its forms, and where everyone has the freedom to be their authentic self. On behalf of the 140 voices, our staff, volunteers, and HMC Board of Directors, THANK YOU for joining us for Princes of Pop! Your support not only makes productions like this possible but also furthers our mission to use music to inspire community, compassion, and change. Together, let's celebrate the power of pop music to unite, uplift, and transform!

OUR FRIENDS
we can’t sing without your support
Heartland Men’s Chorus Kansas City is the largest LGBTQIA+ cultural organization in the Great Plains. We’ve witnessed so many wonderful changes over our 38 years of singing, yet many challenges still exist, especially in Kansas and Missouri. Only with your support can we continue to make a difference!
ON THE BOOKS OR IN YOUR HEART
Despite the progress and setbacks in the Supreme Court or in the voting booth, people make decisions based upon what is in their hearts and minds. That’s why HMCKC creates programming that is musically excellent and socially relevant at a time when people are seeking clarity and understanding of neighbors, friends, family members and themselves.
HMCKC SERVES THE COMMUNITY
When Heartland Men’s Chorus sings, the entire community benefits. We have also sung at hundreds of events in support of area non-profit organizations including the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund, Literacy Kansas City, UMKC Pride Breakfast and so many more.
It’s not fake news when The Kansas City Star writes: “Heartland Men’s Chorus is one of the most beloved artistic institutions in Kansas City.”
A NATIONAL REPUTATION
HMCKC is recognized as one of the premier LGBTQIA+ choruses in the nation from an artistic and administrative perspective. HMCKC is widely respected for its performances at national GALA Choruses Festivals, statewide conferences and performances throughout the region. Being a leading arts organization is only possible with strong commitment from our members, staff and patrons. Thank you for your support of our voices and our mission.
YOUR SUPPORT IS VITAL
Your tax-deductible contribution can be mailed to: Heartland Men’s Chorus Kansas City, PO Box 32374, Kansas City, MO 64171-5374. They also recognize that HMCKC is a proud and affirming presence for the LGBTQIA+ community and beyond. Heartland Soul members know that their financial support allows HMCKC to continue its mission and vision with programming that not only entertains, but changes hearts and minds.
HEARTLAND SOUL MEMBERS RECEIVE SEVERAL BENEFITS:
• Invitation to Heartland Soul Receptions
• Invitation to guest artist receptions (when applicable) to meet guest artists and learn about the “behind the scenes” preparation of HMCKC programs.
• Free parking in the adjacent garage for all of our concerts.
• Preferred subscriber upgrades for season tickets.
• Honorary numbered Heartland Soul lapel pin denoting membership.
The following people are the current members of Heartland Soul. We gratefully thank them for their generous support of the music and mission of Heartland Men’s Chorus.

our vision
Singing to inspire a world of love and acceptance
There is room for everyone in Heartland Men’s Chorus Kansa City: singers, non-singers, men, women, old or young. You can become a part of Kansas City’s most unique Chorus!
INTERESTED IN SINGING WITH HEARTLAND MEN’S CHORUS?
Auditions for new singers take place at the beginning of each concert cycle, in September, January and April.
First, come check us out! You’ll have a chance to get to know us by coming to our first two rehearsals of the concert cycle on Tuesdays from 6:30–9:30 p.m. in Founder’s Hall at Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral (13th Street and Broadway in downtown Kansas City, MO). Contact the chorus office (hmc@hmckc.org) so we’re ready to welcome you! After that, you’ll schedule a short vocal audition with our artistic director. If all goes well, the final step is attending our New Member Orientation and you’re in! If you can’t wait, or you’ve missed the start of the cycle, you are invited to visit rehearsal any time.
INTERESTED IN NON-SINGING OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE CHORUS?
Those who don’t sing or can’t make the weekly rehearsal commitment are invited to join our nonsinging fifth section, HeartLight. This group gives an opportunity for interested people to be members of the Chorus and provide a wide range of essential support functions. HeartLight members are incorporated into Chorus events as their personal schedules permit. If you would like to know more about HeartLight, or you would like to volunteer specific skills to the Chorus, please contact the Chorus office at (816) 931-3338 or hmc@hmckc.org.
