Hello, and welcome to Anthems of Pride!

We are so excited that you are here to help us celebrate 40 years of singing to inspire a world of love and acceptance.

As I end my tenure as Executive Director of Heartland Men's Chorus Kansas City, I can't help but focus on two words: THANK YOU! Since joining the chorus in 1993, I have been the recipient of so much love and support, and I know every member of the chorus would say the same.

I want to thank the Board of Directors for placing their trust in me. I also want to thank our staff for their tireless work in bringing the very best to our audiences, especially during some incredibly challenging times. A special thank you goes to Tom and Shawn for stepping up when personal circumstances limited my ability to fully carry out some of my responsibilities.

Most of all, I want to thank the two groups of people without whom this organization simply would not exist: the members and alumni of HMCKC, and our audiences.

I have never known a more dedicated group of members than those of Heartland Men's Chorus Kansas City. They stand on the shoulders of our founders and alumni, whose vision and commitment built the organization we enjoy today. Our members are dedicated, supportive, passionate, mission-driven — and, of course, incredibly talented.

And if there were no one to sing for, what would be the point?

In all my years of performing, I have never experienced a more loyal and enthusiastic audience than the one we have here in Kansas City. Whether you're attending your very first HMCKC concert or you've been with us for all 40 years, you inspire us every time we step onto the stage. Thank you for your support — past, present, and future. It means more than you know.

As I pass the checkbook to my successor, I do so with complete confidence. Dr. Chipper Dean is an outstanding choice to lead the chorus into its next chapter. He is supported by an exceptional staff, a dedicated Board of Directors, and an extraordinary membership.

Tonight, we close Heartland Men’s Chorus Kansas City’s 40th season — and we close it in full voice. Forty years of voices. Forty years of chosen family. Forty years of showing up in Kansas City and beyond with music, courage, humor, grief, glitter, resistance, and joy. That is not just a legacy. That is a living, breathing, singing act of defiance.

This concert was built as both a celebration and a declaration. We begin by naming a new world, then move through songs of longing, identity, resilience, liberation, tenderness, and unapologetic pride. These are anthems not simply because they are loud — though some of them certainly are — but because they give us something to stand inside. They name what we have survived. They remind us what we deserve. They are proof that our voices were never meant to be quiet.

And then, of course, there is Cheyenne Jackson. When I first reached out to Cheyenne’s team in December of 2024, I knew this was the artist this moment deserved. To have those early conversations evolve into this—a shared stage at the close of our 40th season—is nothing short of extraordinary. Cheyenne is funny, generous, glamorous, vulnerable, and deeply human. He is a performer who has built a career by refusing to be only one thing. He brings Broadway fire, screen magnetism, and something rarer than either: the courage to show up exactly as he is. In other words, he fits right in with Heartland.

This evening is not only about closing Season 40. It is about honoring every person who built this chorus from the ground up: the singers and leaders who carried it through every chapter, and the audience members, donors, volunteers, families, and friends who believed that a gay men’s chorus in Kansas City could be more than a choir.

It could be a home. It could be a mirror. It could be a movement.

It could be — and still is — a place where people come to hear something true.

Heartland is not slowing down. We are stepping into our next era with ambition, imagination, and full voice. Season 40 has reminded us where we come from. Tonight reminds us why we sing. And what comes next will show the world how far this voice can carry.

SHAWN CULLEN

Shawn Cullen is a conductor, educator, and creative producer whose work lives at the intersection of musical excellence and mission-driven performance. Known nationally for his innovative programming and collaborative leadership, Cullen has shaped over 50 concert and theatrical productions that blend artistry with advocacy — cementing his role as a dynamic force in the evolving LGBTQIA+ performing arts landscape. Past creative leadership includes eight years as Artistic Director/Conductor for the Reveille Men’s Chorus, Desert Voices Mixed Chorus (Tucson, AZ) and since 2019, Cullen has served as Artistic Director and Conductor of Heartland Men’s Chorus. Under his leadership, the Chorus has entered a bold period of artistic renewal and regional expansion including reimagined mainstage programming, launched a multi-state touring initiative, and has brought nationally recognized works to Kansas City audiences.

Recognized as an award-winning music educator, Mr. Cullen has held positions in K-12 instrumental/vocal music, adjunct faculty at the University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music and most recently as Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory. Cullen’s dynamic skill-set has led to a multifaceted career in choral music, instrumental music, and regional musical theater serving as principal conductor for the Arizona Repertory Theater from 2011-2017. Favorite credits include Into the Woods, The Secret Garden, Oklahoma!, EVITA, Avenue Q, and The Full Monty. Mr. Cullen has worked in collaboration with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra as vocal director for Broadway Rocks & Broadway Rocks II, and most recently Broadway’s Leading Men with the Kansas City Symphony.

Cullen served six years on the national Board of Directors for GALA Choruses (2017-2023), helping to shape educational and equity-focused initiatives for LGBTQ+ choruses across North America. He holds undergraduate and masters degrees in Music Education and Conducting from the University of Arizona and completed advanced doctoral studies at UMKC. Cullen’s work reflects a commitment to inclusive education, mental health advocacy, and community engagement through music that affirms and empowers. www.shawncullen.com

CHEYENNE JACKSON Cheyenne Jackson is a GRAMMY and Emmy-nominated actor, singer, and songwriter whose work spans concert stages, Broadway, television, and film with rare versatility and open-hearted depth.

As a concert performer, Jackson has graced the stages of iconic venues including Disney Hall, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Hollywood Bowl, and Kennedy Center.

He received a GRAMMY nomination for his collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony as Tony in West Side Story conducted by the legendary Michael Tilson Thomas.

Cheyenne's 25-26 season highlights include his sold-out Carnegie Hall solo debut on December 8, 2025, directed by Tony Award winner Warren Carlyle. With this newly developed show — dubbed the Midlife Torso Tour — an intimate yet electrifying evening of music and storytelling, Jackson embarked on a national tour including stops in Palm Springs, San Francisco, Beverly Hills, Las Vegas, Scottsdale, Idaho Falls, Lone Tree, Fort Collins, and Erie, among others. He also appears with the American Pops Orchestra in Washington, D.C. alongside James Monroe Iglehart and Justin Guarini under the baton of Luke Frasier in a program of Broadway favorites to be filmed for PBS. As a recording artist, Jackson's albums — including I'm Blue, Skies, Renaissance, and the critically acclaimed The Power of Two with Michael Feinstein — showcase a singular blend of jazz, pop, and folk. His most recent release, the EP Love, Dad, features his heartfelt original song Ok. On Broadway, Jackson's career spans Into the Woods, XANADU, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Aida, The Performers, Once Upon a Mattress, Finian's Rainbow, All Shook Up (Theatre World Award), and the Tony Award-winning smash Oh, Mary! He returned to the production in spring 2026, joining Maya Rudolph for a celebrated limited engagement through July 5, 2026.

On screen, Jackson is known for his Emmy-nominated turn in Julie and the Phantoms and recurring roles in American Horror Story, 30 Rock, Glee, Doctor Odyssey, and The Morning Show, among many others. In 2026 he joined the cast of Apple TV+'s Imperfect Women alongside Elizabeth Moss and Kerry Washington. Film credits include UNITED 93 and HBO's Behind the Candelabra.

ROBERT LAMAR SIMS

Born in Louisville, Kentucky and raised in Selma, Alabama, Robert Lamar Sims holds B.M. and M.M. degrees in piano performance with an emphasis in vocal accompanying and chamber music from University of Maryland College Park. He has extensive and varied experience as a performer, teacher, coach, and director in church, academic, concert, and theatrical settings. His teachers and coaches include Claudia Faulk, Roy McAllister, Santiago Rodriguez, Bela Nagy, Jorg Demus, Robert McCoy, members of the Guarneri String Quartet, Leon Major, Alcine Wiltz, Richard Crittenden, Timothy Seelig, and Thilde Beuing. Organizations with which he has worked include Friday Morning Music Club, Paul Hill Chorale, Cathedral Choral Society, Washington Opera, National Symphony Youth Fellowship Program, Master Chorale Chamber Singers, and Washington Bach Consort (in the Washington, D.C. area), and Turtle Creek Chorale and the Women’s Chorus of Dallas (in Dallas, Texas). Currently living in Kansas City, Missouri, Lamar continues to be active as a teacher and coach of voice and piano, principal accompanist for Heartland Men’s Chorus, and a soloist and collaborative artist with a variety of performers and organizations throughout the area, including Northland Community Choir, Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City, International School of Music at Park University, Kansas City Repertory Theater, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, City in Motion Dance Theater, Byrd Productions, Black Repertory Theater, Kansas City Women’s Chorus. He also works with members of Kansas City Chorale, Kansas City Symphony and Symphony Chorus.

The Heartland Men’s Chorus Endowment Fund has received tax-deductible contributions of more than $500,000. Administered by the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, the Endowment Fund is a resource that ensures the long-term financial health of the Chorus. The fund was created in 1998 to honor Bill Casey and Reuben Reynolds for their years of service to the Chorus. HMCKC is always looking for talented TTBB singers & passionate non-singing volunteers to continue our Kansas City legacy of musical excellence! We are a choral ensemble beginning our 41st season specializing in “choral theater” productions attached to our vision. There is room for everyone over the age of 18 in HMCKC: men, women, trans, non-binary, gay or straight!

INTERESTED IN SINGING WITH HEARTLAND MEN’S CHORUS? Auditions for new singers take place at the beginning of each concert cycle, in August/September, December/January and March/April. We’ll be conducting auditions for our Holiday show, Don We Now!, on Tuesday, August 25 and Sunday, August 30. Click here to learn more and sign up.

You’ll have a chance to get to know us by coming to the first twoTuesday night rehearsals for Don We Now! from 6:30–9:30 p.m. in Founders’ Hall at Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral in downtown Kansas City, MO. Open rehearsals are Tuesday, September 8 and Tuesday, September 15. Submit a Join The Chorus form at the bottom of the Audition page so we’re ready to welcome you! After that, you’ll schedule a short vocal audition with our Artistic Director.

INTERESTED IN NON-SINGING OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE CHORUS? Those who don’t sing or can’t make the weekly rehearsal commitment are invited to join our nonsinging fifth section, HeartLight. This group gives an opportunity for interested people to be members of the Chorus and provide a wide range of essential support functions.
