Sport Fitness Services Level 3

A new and exciting course that provides students with the experience and qualifications to work in the leisure industry as Fitness Instructors (accepted and supported by the Register of Exercise Professionals - REPs).

This course has been designed for students who aspire to work in the fitness industry and through practical application students will gain industry recognised qualifications; Level 2 Gym Instructor, Aqua Aerobics Instructor, Circuits Instructor and Exercise to Music Instructor.

Making use of a free membership of the Point4 (gym, spa and leisure facilities), students will develop their understanding of anatomy and physiology and exercise planning and delivery. They will also have the opportunity to enhance valuable skills such as communication, self-confidence & employability. A range of further qualifications will also be on offer, such as sports leadership and first aid, as well as English and maths.

Students can also choose to take part in one of the following sport academy pathways – football, netball or fitness. The Fitness Pathway will involve taking part in diverse range of fitness classes as well as cross-college sports activities, whilst members of the Football Academy and Netball Academy will play in the National Colleges League.

Work placements include public and private gyms, leisure centres and professional sporting clubs.

Qualification Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport – Fitness Services (equivalent to three A Levels)

Duration Two years

Course Content A selection of unit titles is show below. • Anatomy & Physiology • Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well¬being • Professional Development in the Sports Industry • Self-employment in the Sport Industry • Instructing Gym¬ based Exercise • Exercise and Circuit Based Physical Activity • Instructing exercise to music • Instructing water-based exercise

Assessment Assessment takes place using a variety of methods; essays, presentations, teaching assessments, practical performance assessments, external assessment, projects, group work, practical work experience and independent research.

Entry Requirements • Five GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or above (to include maths and English) or successful completion of a suitable and relevant Level 2 qualification to Merit grade • Successful interview and initial assessment in English and mathematics. • Applicants will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the chosen subject area

Progression Progression routes shown are dependent on successful completion of qualifications and meeting entry criteria.

REPS have confirmed that on successful completion of the qualification direct entry will be permitted for learners to go into the industry in roles such as: • Fitness instructor • Gym instructor • Circuits instructor • Exercise to music instructor • Aqua aerobics instructor

REPs is an independent, public register which recognises the qualifications and expertise of health-enhancing exercise instructors in the UK. REPs provides a system of regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet the health and fitness industry’s agreed National Occupational Standards.
