讓香港成為 「戲劇盛事之都」!

這是香港話劇團繼2014和16年後,第三度舉辦「國際黑盒劇場節」。在上屆,本團 與西九文化區已啟動對話表達合作意向。就今屆落實與西九文化區攜手聯合主辦,更 重新命名為「香港國際黑盒劇場節」,身為藝術總監除感到榮幸外,也視為外界對話 劇團國際黑盒劇場節成績的一種肯定。 好戲連場的香港國際黑盒劇場節,一如以往,一票難求!促使其成功的一大要素,在 於能為觀眾開拓眼界,不論是題材、製作手法或在劇場裡的體驗,均能刺激觀眾反思 自身和社會的議題。話劇團的黑盒劇場是一個難得的開放平台,讓藝術家大膽嘗試各 種創作手法和題材。   今次為大家介紹的四齣劇目中,話劇團將參與製作其中兩齣的香港版本,包括來自北 京的《美好的一天》和澳洲的《伊狄帕斯˙豬亦拍屍》,話劇團團員亦有機會參演或 協助製作,對本地和海外劇場人的藝術交流大有裨益。另外兩齣劇作《中性》(意大 利)和《五段小品》(瑞士 / 德國 / 比利時),均屬寰宇劇壇震撼之作,是次作為中 介引入好戲,亦與有榮焉。   最後,再次感謝西九文化區主動提出合作邀請,也感謝多個國家和地區的劇場人抽空 來港演出,讓香港國際黑盒劇場節成為本地劇壇年度盛事。作為本團的重點項目,我 當然希望國際黑盒劇場節可持續舉辦,既為香港觀眾介紹更多海外好戲,同時更進一 步推動劇藝交流,讓香港成為「戲劇盛事之都」。 陳敢權 香港話劇團藝術總監

Curatorial Statement

The biannual International Black Box Festival will now be renamed the Hong Kong International Black Box Festival and it marks the first of many collaborations between the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and West Kowloon Cultural District. Together, we believe in curating the best and brightest of the contemporary theatre scene from around the world for Hong Kong’s audiences. This edition is an invitation for you to spend a moment of disruption with us as a response to the world we live in today. Our world today is one of war and hatred, ruled by fear and misinformation. A scenario that ironically conditions us to absolve our agency by simply clicking a like, a share on Facebook or Twitter. This situation also blurs the lines between what is real and what is fiction. But then, what is real? The presentation and representation of the real in theatre is always a problematic one as Walter Benjamin discusses in his essay The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. Perhaps the consumption of such absolutes is less important than the need to specifically address the returning of agency to audiences in the theatre. The projects that we have curated for this festival invite us, the audience, to be aware of our agency. Your life experiences, your intellectual, moral and emotional compasses that you imbue with these performances will complete them. Hence, they encourage you to question the process of Becoming Real. This encounter, however, is not about what is and what is not, but rather, it tests our limits of what we think we know and questions our reading of the everyday. We begin the festival with a special performance called One Fine Day by Beijing director Li Jianjun. Working with 19 individuals of varied cultural, social and ethnic backgrounds from Hong Kong, the audience will encounter their stories as told by the subjects themselves. Almost like a voyeur, you listen in on their stories told ”live” through selecting the appropriate channel on your radio set. You are instantly made aware of your role as you engage in this deliberate act of consuming these ”real” stories, real lives. In week two, we invite you to enter the world of Silvia

Calderoni in a piece titled MDLSX by critically acclaimed Italian company Motus. Beyond the currency of labels such as transgender, cisgender, gender fluid, etc. The experience of meeting Calderoni blurs the lines between fact and fiction, one that pushes the limitations of identity structures transcending into actual living. MDLSX is a post-punk rollercoaster ride that explodes our conceptions of gender identities and difficulties in going beyond such labels. The third piece by Australian performance company post, will introduce their unique brand of humour, live art and theatre in collaboration with artists from Hong Kong for the first time. The Cantonese version of their riotous Oedipus Schmoedipus will have its world premiere this autumn. In this piece, they challenge our conceptions of death as told by the Great White Man so pervasive in our theatrical canon. For them, “death belongs to everyone” and hence, 25 volunteer are invited for each performance date to playact their best dying sequences through a hysterical journey of “sly postmodern commentary” on the coloniser and the colonised. We close the festival with Five Easy Pieces by Milo Rau/ International Institute of Political Murder/CAMPO. A theatrical triumph at festivals the world over, the piece is a sharp investigation on being someone else on stage. Working with children under 13 years old, they perform the life of child killer Marc Dutroux using testimonies, trial documents, and interviews. This (re)presentation by these young performers probes the limits of the possibility of what children know, feel and do. This experience brings to the fore our own fears, taboos and morality, an intervention that wakes us from our ethical slumber conditioned by the everyday of our today. So we invite you to come and be a little uncomfortable with us, to take a moment and engage in this disruption of your everyday. Hopefully, you will leave the theatre transformed, energized with a renewed sense of agency and know that you can and must do something about it. See you at the festival! MOTUS簡介 About MOTUS Motus於1991年由Enrico Casagrande和Daniela Nicolò在意大利里米尼創立,以刻 劃日常生活之殘酷與矛盾的劇作打進藝術界,自此創作劇場作品、演出、裝置和錄 像,同時舉辦研討會和工作坊。曾參與不同的藝術節,足跡遍佈世界各地,從紐約的 雷達外藝術節,到蒙特利爾的TransAmériques藝術節、溫哥華的PuSh國際表演藝術 節、智利的聖地牙哥國際戲劇節、布宜諾斯艾利斯的FIBA國際戲劇節、澳洲的阿德萊 德藝術節、臺北藝術節和歐洲各地的藝術節。作品獲得多個獎項和肯定,包括三項意 大利烏布獎。 Motus was founded in Rimini, Italy in 1991 by Enrico Casagrande and Daniela Nicolò. The group burst onto the scene with productions portraying the harsh contradictions of present day life, creating theatre shows, performances, installations and videos, and conducting seminars and workshops. The group have performed in festivals all over the world, from Under the Radar in New York, to Festival TransAmériques in Montreal, PuSh Festival in Vancouver, Santiago a Mil in Chile, the FIBA Festival in Buenos Aires, the Adelaide Festival in Australia, the Taipei Arts Festival in Taiwan, and diverse festivals in Europe. They have received a number of prestigious awards and recognitions for their work, including three Ubu Prizes.

MOTUS的話 Message from MOTUS 我們最新的著作名為《你好,陌生人》。 歡迎「不知名」的陌生人這個概念,正是我們的目標…… 我曾想過把從前用地域界定「他人」或「不同」的手法推移至內藏、無形的類別與偏 見。 題材、超越性、蛻變、昇華與邊緣化性別定義的黑暗面相互交集,讓人類精神有機會 提升,跳出固有定義……基於近年出現了令人痛心的仇恨,為了反抗仇恨與典型思維 硬要把人種分隔的趨勢,我們必須把這個話題帶上舞台,以各種形式表達出來! Our latest book is titled Hello Stranger and this idea of welcoming the stranger, “the unknown”, it’s our goal… I’ve thought of moving the issue of geographical boundaries to the inner, invisible, categories and prejudices we put into effect in perceiving the other, the "different". Because the blending of subject matter, transcendence, transformation, ascension, with the darker side of living on the fringes of gender definition is a way of raising the human spirit above the norm… Just in these last times of fateful hatred, in opposition to this thrust towards separation between peoples and genres in a bellicose and stereotypical way, it is necessary to talk about this also from the stage... 關於《中性》 About MDLSX 《中性》是一個具有爆炸性的聲音裝置,一首迷幻而孤寂的詩歌,歌頌「我們成為什麼」的自由、性別混和 / 轉換、生存在超越 肉體界限、膚色、性徵、與生俱來或他人所賦予的國籍、甚至屬於哪裡是祖國的自由。Rosi Braidotti在《成為歐洲人》文中提及 「多樣性、開放式的歸屬感」,引出後民族主義身份的看法……《中性》的目標是跨越分類 — 包括藝術性的類別。作品代表了 Silvia Calderoni一個漫長的旅程:經歷了與Motus合作的十個年頭,她借用DJ / VJ表演形式作出實驗,進行一場探索邊界的演 出。《中性》包含自傳題材,同時也有引經據典,模糊了想像與現實的界線,從「性別風波」走向「拆解性別」。我們引用 Judith Butler,連同Donna Haraway的《改造人宣言》、Paul B. Preciado) MDLSX is an explosive sound device, a lysergic and solitary hymn to the freedom  of becoming, to  gender b(l)ending, to being other than the borders of the body, skin colour, sexual organs, being other than an imposed or acquired nationality, a belonging to a Fatherland. Rosi Braidotti in On Becoming Europeans talked of “an open belonging to Multiplicities”, a text that suggests a post-nationalist  identity... And MDLSX aims at going beyond  categories – the artistic ones, too.  It is Silvia Calderoni’s road trip, who – after 10 years with Motus – experiments a DJ/VJ Set like format, in order to start an exploration around borders.  Autobiographical bits and literary evocations come together, and MDLSX, by blurring  fiction and reality, swings from Gender Trouble to Undoing Gender. We quote Judith Butler who, with Donna Haraway’s A cyborg Manifesto, Paul B. Preciado’s Manifeste Contra-sexuel and other bits of the kaleidoscopic universe of Queer, weaves the background of this “Monster-Performance”. The change needed is so profound that it is impossible to say. So deep that says it is unimaginable. But the impossible is to come. And the unthinkable is due... (“Feminism is not a humanism”, Paul B. Preciado)

Multi-award winning actress and artist Silvia Calderoni was born in Lugo, in the northern Ravenna region of Italy, in 1981. She began her acting career at an early age with Teatro Valdoca, and since 2005 has worked with directors Daniela Nicolò and Enrico Casagrande at Motus, specially creating performances that explore her androgyny. Past performances include A Place [That Again] (2006), based on the work of Samuel Beckett, Rumore Rosa (2007), a tribute to Rainer Fassbinder’s 1972 cult queer film The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant, Cruel Tales of Youth (2007), a Motus project about outer city kids, Antigone in Syrma Antigòne (2009), The Plot is the Revolution (2011) and Nella Tempesta (Into the Storm) in 2013 in Montreal. She has also worked extensively in film: in 2011 she starred alongside Vincent Gallo in Davide Manuli’s film The Legend of Kaspar Hauser, in 2017 she acts in Riccardo va all’inferno by Roberta Torre and in Amori che non sanno stare al mondo by Francesca Comencini; she was the protagonist of the music video clip Musa for Italian band Marlene Kuntz. Calderoni has won the prestigious Ubu Prize for Best Actress (under 30) (2009), the Marte Award for Best Actress (2013), the Elizabeth Turroni Award for Best Actress (2014), the Virginia Reiter Award for Best Italian Actress (under 35) (2015) and in 2017 she was awarded the Best Performer Award at Dublin Fringe Festival and at Sarajevo MESS Festival for her performance in MDLSX.

It has experienced and created hyper-contemporary trends in the theatre, performing authors such as Beckett, DeLillo, Genet, Fassbinder, Rilke or their beloved Pasolini, leading to their radical reinterpretation of Antigone in the light of the Greek crisis. Throughout the years, the group has created theatre shows, performances, installations and videos, conducted seminars and workshops, taken part in interdisciplinary festivals. They’ve received numerous acknowledgements, including three Ubu Prizes and prestigious special awards for their work. Financially supported by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Hong Kong Repertory Theatre operates under the guidance of its Governing Council, and employs a team of over 70 full-time professionals including the artistic director, assistant artistic director, actors, technical and stage management staff as well as administrators. • Since its establishment 41 years ago, it has presented more than 300 productions, many of which have become classics of the local theatre canon. MISSIONS • To produce and develop a high quality, innovative and diverse repertoire, encompassing Chinese, international, classic, and contemporary theatre, as well as original new works by local artists. • To develop the audiences’ interest and appreciation of theatre and to enrich the city’s cultural life, through its leadership position as the city’s flagship theatre company.

AREAS OF ACTIVITY • A Balanced Repertoire – A selected programme of local original works, translations and adaptations of classic and contemporary plays from the Mainland and internationally. The company collaborates with playwrights, directors, actors, designers and other talent within and outside of the company, to create new mainstream theatre productions of artistic excellence. • Black Box Theatre – Flexible in approach, the Black Box Theatre provides a space where writers and practitioners can explore, take risks and experiment to create new material and modes of performances, in order to cultivate and stretch the boundaries of theatre arts. • Theatre Education – Bringing theatre to life through courses and workshops, the company aims to provide theatre education and skills development for adults and children via the many facets of theatre. It also works to increase the audiences’ awareness towards theatre arts through dedicated performances for students as well as the wider community. • International Exchange – Through the strengthening of exchanges with the Mainland and internationally, the company tours regularly in order to promote Hong Kong’s local theatre culture, and to develop opportunities for collaborations and performances across the border and overseas. • Theatre Literature – Through a varied programme of new writing development, Reader’s Theatre, seminars, reviews and publication of theatre literature, the company aims to encourage, document, preserve and consolidate creative activities in theatre.
