The way dance is perceived in higher education can also

cause students to feel that dance is not a subject that requires theoretical understanding. Art is often perceived as a

subjective medium with no theoretical base. After all, you’re

either an artist or you’re not.

Graham Mcfee, in

Understanding Dance, breaks down the concepts behind

subjective and objective in terms of education. McFee supports his claim that knowledge of dance is objective by the mere fact that, otherwise, dance education and training

would be pointless.

‘‘ ...educators need no longer debase their subjects by arguingfor curriculum time for

them simply as a contrast to ‘objective’ studies such as science and mathematics,

as ‘on the other side of the coin \ For while they offer something different, it is not (as / am arguing) something less objective, of less worth, or less concerned with

knowledge and understanding.” 7

Lets borrow a basic concept from Plato and consider how a

dancer might enhance understanding through processing ideas.

The experience of performing can be very profound, and

not one that can be easily explained.

Some performers

describe it in visceral terms as an adrenalin charge through the entire body. Feelings seem to pour out, as if something greater than you is rushing through your body. Dancers

have often said that pains and injuries seem to disappear

when they are performing on stage, only to return when the performance is over. For most dancers, performing is the climax of all of the hours spent in the studio creating and

rehearsing. By itself, the feeling of being on stage keeps most dancers committed to the art.

One of the central concepts of Greek philosophy is divine inspiration. According to Plato, a true artist is merely a vessel of higher powers. In the Ion Socrates (in the words

of Plato) explains that an artist isn’t even intellectually aware when in the throws of inspiration. “The God takes their

intellect away from them when he uses them as servants... The God himself is the one who speaks, and he gives voice

through them to us.’’8

It may seem far-fetched to apply this idea to our experience as dancers on stage today. Yet it does inspire me to really

I also don’t see any reason to deconstruct every idea because

it happens to be philosophical. Philosophy and dance can

this experience of the dance is quite different. 應用這個看法於今天舞者的經驗上可能是有點牽強°但

Another reason dance is hard to talk about may be because we haven’t developed a universal language for dance
