also addresses the violence that occurred in Bosnia, with a
few of its violent scenes seemingly determined to shake people out of the sweet slumber of their comfortable lives.
In mid-June, as the first of the LCSD Solo Soul series,
prominent local writer, Wong Bik-wan, held her second theatre show, The Silent and the Obscure. Besides reading a monologue of a social worker excerpted from her new novel, she occasionally broke up the narrative with a
flamenco dance, as if words alone were inadequate to express her grief and anger. Even though providing society’s powerless minority an emotional outlet to face social
injustice might be an authentic interpretation of flamenco, compared to Nietzsche’s praise of the intensity of life expressed in Carmen, Wong’s emotionless facial expression
seemed to be a denial or suppression of the joy of the dancing body. Therefore, despite her claim to return to the fragile body and to overcome her shyness by using her body and voice, she was still very much the subject in control, and
did not give the body a chance to dance for its own sake.
The second of the Solo Soul series was Daniel Yeung’s Metalove. Yeung has long been a proponent of pure body
dance, and hence of creating a style of his own. I am still

movement or the backward leap with forward hugging in the Jumping Frame dance video. Yeung also extended his
usual turning and halting with extra shifting movements
using gravity and supplied more minor details such as
finger movements while stretching. Again, Yeung includes props of body parts in this work. A
disembodied arm first resting on the back of a transparent chair later clutched Yeung’s own arm, seeming like a helping
hand or a haunting ghost who will not let go. Yeung’s climbing through a mirror tunnel, also resulted in similar
kaleidoscopically weird images of disjointed body parts. One last memorable sequence came almost towards the end. The projection of fingers dancing resembling a human figure was reprised from the beginning, but this time with Yeung
dancing in front of it with his whole body, mimicking the same movements such as kneeling or collapsing. The parallel format provided us a distance to see the cyclic nature
of life and death without being too indulgent, despite the accompaniment of a love song by the Carpenters.

to be through and through hilarious, something resembling
a Manga (Japanese comic) cult show. The expectations of
the audience, made up of our violence-fed generation, seemed to be well satisfied, for they gave the loudest
applause when the dancers performed a kick boxing
sequence of the type seen in comics and games. However, although Lai Tak Wai plays with the notion of kids getting
hooked on electronic games in his work, only in Max Lee’s
pieces, do dancers put on their characters’ masks and leave reality behind. Bruce Wong also presented a piece that is a
parody of the gangster genre, but a duet he choreographed is, in contrast, pretty sentimental. So is the sad ending given
to the boy obsessed with little toy cars in the only piece choreographed by Chris Chan. The English title of the evening, Little Men’s Blue, is thus a good generalization after all, for summarizing a group of ‘kidults’ wishing to recall
those carefree childhood days.
The fourth program of the Solo Soul series is a combination

of
Game》
