In Chinese modem literature, the reputation of Eileen Chang

in literary studies has been constantly on the rise in our times.

She is also a recent hot figure in local stage productions. In one of her short essays, On Dance, Chang characterizes the

“free style” of modem dance as evoking the pleasure of body

movement for its own sake, while social dance in a complex society can never escape its sexual connotation. Such

notions seem to be well echoed in the different directions

of the two dances grouped together under the title, In Search of Eileen Chang.

generally, the Taiwan dancers seem to give a more natural treatment to the choreographer’s movement than CCDC’s usual acute presentation of form.

A woman haunted by her own past memories, seems to be a central theme of the CCDC production That Time as well.

Australian choreographer Maggi Sietsma replaced Nobel Literature Prize laureate Samuel Beckett’s male protagonist with a woman. With what she calls “film noir” renditions, Sietsma lightened the tone of the dance. With “Please mind 城市當代舞蹈團演出茜思瑪作品《那時》。攝影:陳德昌 CCDC performs Maggi Sietsma's That Time. Photo: Ringo Chan

reverse the interpretation and see the stage dance as the main text, while what is happening on the raised platform is a kind of subtitle. The procession of people from the past

be seen as an experience of reading ghost-tales in which the reader becomes more and more involved and in a final
