As a matter of fact, fetish in modern society has evolved far beyond direct sensation and simulation to more cerebral and

in Lisa Race’s Three Wishes, as well as the rotations and turns that immediately gained forceful momentum, truly enabled Wong to command the space.

Wong, throwing

himself forward to single-handedly put out a candle on the

floor, performed one of the most memorable sequences of actions in the whole performance, although memorable

moments were infrequent.

As for the props and costumes, I guess nobody really

bothers to criticize these comparatively minor issues, especially considering the tight budget for shows like this (most production fees really came from voluntary collective salary cuts by the staff of DanceArt, the show’s

organizer).

But being minimal in production in a small

The making of the Three Wishes, for

this sequence from the fluidity of the piece as a whole.

Watching the dance video Roseland by Wim Vandekeybus recently, I had a strong sense of the

importance for a choreographer to have a dance

philosophy, which can then act as a source of direction

for further development and as the foundation for the

maturation of a unique style.

I then recalled that

Tannion, in his post-performance talk, said that he brought no steps with him to create Fetish: Stories. Such a project-based way of choreography certainly has its

merits, but nonetheless it still relies very much on the depth of research done beforehand.

As articulated in

Eckhart Rolle’s text for The Power of Now, “how is more

important than what.” Without insights, venturing into

an unfamiliar subject can result in a piece easily staying on the surface of things, reiterating stereotypes, as it is

difficult for the body to conceal the fact that little is actually known about a subject.

Inspiration can certainly come from different sources,

KN: Are there any exchanges with other European or American academies?

I also think that our Academy has a research and

when they perform together, understand the work

do you think are the major strengths or weaknesses here? SS: Having three professional companies is obviously a strength. With a population of seven million people in

Hong Kong, having three large companies provides employment for many dancers. One of the difficulties,

which is not particular to Hong Kong as I have also
