Maybe we simply have to accept that it is difficult for
Hongkongers to play some very “Chinese” themes well or
persuasively. BALLET EXTRAVAGANZA by Hong Kong Ballet was coincidentally also a program with three different
choreographers’ works. A critic suggested that this format was a more welcome form of presentation, but perhaps, what the audience likes about this type of program, is that it resembles a kind of diversification of investment. To draw more audiences, better choreography is still something much more vital in the long run. The first work, David Allen’s
Dreams of Tenderness and Solitude, gave a hint of a structural way to read the piece with symmetric projections.
The curving sliding door arrangements of the groups were
pleasing both to the eye and the intellect. However, a line
of four dancers seemed perfect, while six in a row seemed a bit too crowded for the stage. When dramatic content was overlaid, imagination seemed to contract, with steps of the
body reduced to moving on the beat. The group dancing, 香港笆蕾舞團演出謝傑斐作品《芭蕾探戈》。攝影:陸嘉鑾 Hong Kong Ballet perfroming Stephen Jefferies’ Tango Ballet Tango. Photo: Tony Luk
