Carl’s Legacy (excerpt) A dedicated teacher and scholar, Mr. Carl Wolz greatly influenced the dance culture
throughout Asia and the Pacific Rim. The last time I saw Mr. Carl Wolz was in June 2000, he came back to the Academy as an examiner. I had not seen him for years, yet he was still energetic and enthusiastic about everything in the school. Even with his tiring schedule,
attending meetings, observing classes, and watching performances, he worked endlessly, as he did in our old school days, he had not changed at all. Now, as a teacher, I have changed my perspective, I realize what a demanding job it is, and understand how much
stamina and devotion beyond knowledge is required, with which I learn to appreciate the
compassion and the strength inherent in Mr. Wolz. Such endurance, strength and leadership has helped Hong Kong develop numerous dancers, choreographers, and teachers. Without hesitation, Mr. Wolz embraced the qualities of a dedicated and sensitive teacher,
he wrote (1995): “A dedicated teacher is genuinely interested in the welfare and
development of the students. This teacher instills a sense of discipline and love of the art in a caring and nourishing manner. A sensitive teacher is one who tries to understand
cultural differences in people and to develop an approach to handling those differences” (p. 106).
His vision not only helped the HKAPA to establish its world-class facilities for a crosscultural dance curriculum but prepared “students for life by teaching them respect for other peoples and their cultural traditions.” He believed
“cross-cultural learning broadens a person’s world

Eventualities are bound to take place, but this is one of the worst ones that I had been postponing to happen. Carl was a giant figure for me, and I shall hold him at that height which no one can claim.
His generosity, his steadfastness to bring the dance world together, his unmatched
sincerity and selflessness......how many
adjectives shall I add!
Prakriti Kashyap, New Delhi, India
We are all deeply saddened to hear the news of Mr. Carl Wolz. He was very dear to us, not
only to my mother, Tania Tang, who had me in her womb when Uncle Carl first arrived in 1982, but also to me. I remember stumbling into his office one afternoon when I was 3 and he gave me one of his last wooden deer. It still sits on my shelf today as I pack for college.
Mr. Wolz’s passion for dance has united people from all over the world, and his fatherly
character has made his leadership personal to many of us. We will remember him for what he has taught us, and his spirit will continue to live amongst us as we dance our way through life. Winston Yang Yue, Hong Kong
