Overview

Without argument, 2021-2022 was full of challenges to the entire Hong Kong society due to the prevailing and lingering pandemic. The Leadership Qualities Centre continued to respond to the needs of students by exploring new engagement means with students for meaningful experiences.

In the past year, the Centre strived hard to create opportunities for students to serve the community, and provide different trainings to better prepare students for their future.

We are delighted to see the silver-lining during the fifth wave of the outbreak. Two programmes, namely “Volunteering @ Special Vacation for Primary School Students” and “Volunteering Under Pandemic Series” were devised and launched. Our students had actively enrolled in these programmes. Over 50 volunteers were recruited in no time. During the "Work from Home" period of the pandemic, primary students were bound to stay home most of the time. A Special School Vacation was announced in March 2022. Our students immediately organised meaningful online activities to engage primary pupils to instill positivity to them. 150 children were benefited to spend funny and educational weeks with our students. Another group of students at the same time provided caring calls to over 200 elderly who were kept at home due to social distancing. A total of 663 volunteering service hours were recorded.

Prolonged disruption due to the pandemic has affected all of our lives. In order to increase mental resilience in students and enhance their coaching skills, the Centre has launched the Positive Coach and HKBU Student Leadership Corps programmes the second time. In these programmes, students were trained with leadership and coaching skills. At the same time, concepts of positive psychology were applied throughout the programmes to develop student growth mindsets and positive character strengths.

Special thanks to donors and partners including but not limited to Tin Ka Ping Foundation, Wofoo Social Entreprises, HKBU Century Club, Kowloon City District Youth Programme Committee, Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong, Independent Commission Against Corruption and numerous supporting partners who have been giving long-term unfailing support to our work and our students.

Introduction In line with the mission of the University to provide a higher education that develops and sustains the integrity of the whole person, and its values of strong commitment to both academic excellence and community service, the Leadership Qualities Centre (LQC) aims to empower HKBU students to become committed global and local citizens, assume active roles to face and resolve global challenges and to become proactive contributors in local community.

Programme Highlights Leadership Development Programme HKBU Student Leadership Corps Sep - Dec 2021 | 20 HKBU students

HKBU Student Leadership Corps brings students with multi-dimensional experiential learning opportunities to enhance leadership knowledge and skills, develop their personal qualities, team collaboration and compassion in serving the community and the world.

20 students actively participated in the programme with 7 training workshops and 2 community and NGO visits. At the end of the programme, the participants presented their learnings and reflections to the guests from Wofoo Social Enterprises. After completing the training, they were well equipped as a member of HKBU Student Leadership Corps to serve the community in need.

This programme was sponsored by the Wofoo Social Enterprises.

KWONG SIN PING The programme has given me valuable opportunities to learn from professionals and prestigious speakers in various fields. Besides, it was a great chance to meet friends and schoolmates in face-to-face trainings and community visit to Sham Shui Po. The programme has brought me positivity in which I am encouraged to change and adapt in a society movig at warp speed.

WONG HOI LAM I am grateful to have this opportunity in meeting new friends and understanding our community from a new perspective. A special thanks to all the instructors and speakers with their great efforts in this programme. It was well-organized with smooth arrangement. I am looking forward to more forthcoming activities organized by LQC! CHENG HIN TUNG The programme covers comprehensive topics in equipping us as committed university student and citizen, from individual development, team collaboration to understanding community. The content and flow of the programme was well structured. The trainings from guest speakers were professional and provided me with insights of skills and knowledge I should be equipping myself in my university life, such as interview skills and growth mindset.

Positive Coach Student Certification Programme Oct - Nov 2021 | 14 HKBU students

Positive Coach Student Certification Programme provides intensive training and certification for students to apply key concepts from positive psychology to their personal and professional life. It helps students to develop a growth mindset and cultivate a positive attitude.

14 students took part in the second cohort of the programme. They went through 30-hour online learning and face-to-face tutorial classes to understand the theory and application of positive psychology. Owing to the resurgence of the pandemic, the face-to-face practicum was replaced by an assignment requiring students to apply what they learnt in real-life situations.

CHAN CHEUK KIU The programme was fun but inspirational! I enjoyed every moment and session of this course, such as the “Grateful Moment Sharing”. It was enjoyable to have a grasp of positive psychology through various interactive and creative games and activities.

CHAN LOK CHING The secret of happiness I learnt from this programme is savoring to re-discover and appreciate grateful happenings in life. I was impressed in the thematic activity, “Self-fat Travel”, when we were given a chance to design an imaginative trip. Feelings of joy, hope and interest were immediately initiated just to imagine travelling with a group of friends!

LEUNG HOI SZE I greatly appreciate the programme arrangement, and in particular, the practicum session which enabled us to actualize our learnings and coaching skills gained from classes. While designing and developing initiatives that introduce positive emotions and relationship establishment to parents and children, I was inspired by the reflections and viewpoints from my groupmates.

Speaking for Confidence Oct, 2021 - Feb 2022 | 17 HKBU students

The ability to speak confidently and eloquently is always important for students either in school or at the workplace, whether it’s on the stage, in class presentation, or during an interview. The programme aims to provide a series of practical and effective trainings to sharpen students’ presentation, communication and public speaking skills. 17 students joined the programme and attended 4 training sessions. Down-to-earth trainings were provided focusing on both theories and practices to boost students’ employability and confidence.

This programme was sponsored by the HKBU Century Club.

CHENG HOI LING JENNIFER I believe the presentation skills I learnt will be useful for both my current study and future career. The most impressive part of the programme was the training provided by professional MC, Calvin Lam. It was enjoyable and amusing to listen to his sharing while learning through lots of interactive activities.

AU-YEUNG TIN CHING The programme was well organized. It enriched our communication skills from all-rounded perspectives, such as preparing script for public speaking, building confidence in presentation, and speaking precisely and concisely.

POE AUDRIS Glad that I have the chance to practice the MC skills learnt in class. I truly enjoyed the speaking practice session in Mr. Calvin Lam’s talk.

Community Engagement Programme Summer School 2021 @ University Experience for Underprivileged Children Jul 2021 | 15 HKBU students | 1,005 service hours

In order to promote students’ awareness and caring spirit toward the needy in society, 15 HKBU students had prepared for more than 3 months to design a series of thematic learning activities for underprivileged children. 44 primary 4 to 6 students from grassroots families joined the 6-day event at HKBU, which aimed to boost their motivation to learn and help them build up a positive attitude towards life. Different topics were covered in interesting and interactive ways, such as history, the economy, environmental protection and sustainable development, as well as various global cultures. Over 80% of the primary school students agreed that the programme motivated them to learn and were very satisfied with the programme.

Kayak for Marine Service

The programme was sponsored by the Kowloon City District Youth Programme Committee and HKBU Century Club.

Oct - Nov 2021 | 15 HKBU students | 522 service hours

Hong Kong’s ocean is trashed with plastic and bottles. To fight against marine pollution, “Kayak for Marine Service” was held to equip students with fundamental kayaking skills and techniques in 3 training sessions for providing marine service. After completing the training, 15 students paddled their kayaks to Sharp Island and Yim Tin Tsai in Sai Kung to collect rubbish left by tourists. Approximately 50kgs of rubbish, including plastic bags, foam boese, fishing nets, pipes, etc. was brought back and properly disposed of at the refuse collection point near Tai Wan. To further promote the importance of environmental protection, the students initiated the “Save the Sea” campaign on campus. Exhibition and game booths were set up to help fellow students understand the hazardous impact of human activities on marine species. It also encouraged them to fight against marine pollution together.

HKBU Community Service Week With the generous support from Tin Ka Ping Foundation, the HKBU Community Service Week was held in March. Two programmes addressing the immediate social needs arising from the 5th wave of pandemic were initiated to provide opportunities for HKBU students to serve the community.

Volunteering @ Special Vacation for Primary School Students Mar - Apr 2022 | 21 HKBU students | 465 service hours

In response to social needs proactively and promptly, “Volunteering @ Special Vacation for Primary School Students” was organised to provide meaningful online activities to primary school students during their Special Vacation. 21 students joined the programme and designed a series of thematic online courses for over 130 primary 3 to 6 students. The 11 online courses planned by our students successfully enriched participating primary school students’ exposure to culture, art, social issues, positive mindset and information technology through a variety of interactive online games and activities. Feedback from the primary school students was very positive and they were impressed by the patience and caring attitude of HKBU students.

This would be one of the most unforgettable and thrilling learning experiences in my university life!

It was a rare opportunity for me to interact with primary students. Though the programme was held online, I was proud to see their happy faces and active engagement in our tailor-made activities.

In planning and leading learning activities for primary students, I have acquired skills in organizing virtual activities and engaging participants online. To ensure the smooth implementation of activities, we rehearsed and reviewed unfamiliar functions and settings in Zoom. I also gained a sense of achievement when kids participated in our designed activities. Though I may not perform well in the breakout room sessions, their responses always encouraged me to improve and persist in the next session.

CHU KWAI WAN

This service experience groomed my leadership qualities and communication skills. Glad to have the opportunities in designing activities with school mates from different parts of the world and in various professions. It was an engagement that transcended ages and cultures!

Volunteering Under Pandemic Series 2022 Mar - Jun 2022 | 28 HKBU students | 299 service hours

Volunteering Under Pandemic Series provides a variety of service opportunities for students to support numerous service recipients and promote positivity in the community via non-face-to-face channels during the pandemic. 7 online interactive activities for children and parents were initiated and designed by the student volunteers. 5 video clips were created and edited to introduce COVIDrelated preventive measures for the elderly and provide fun facts for children’s learning during their time staying at home. Student volunteers also actively participated in the elderly phone caring services for over 30 sessions, to reach out to the elderly in need and offer support and care.

LAI HEI LAM It provided me a valuable chance to be in a leading role and conduct an exciting storytelling journey to kids with different personalities. It also gave me leeway to utilize my creativity and propose interesting content. Overall, it was very fruitful.

TAYYEBA It was an unusual experience in volunteering online. At first, I though it will be challenging to carry out activities and interact with kids through a screen. However, it turned out I have gained invaluable experience and tremendous achievement by working together with my teammates and teaching students online. I also enjoyed sharing different cultures around the world with the kids as I found them enthusiastic and curious about different nations.

CHEN CHI KIU During the services, we filmed and edited videos about COVID health tips and precautions to different age groups. I have learnt to present and design visual materials to cater the needs of different people. For example, we hoped to make the video more interesting and engaging for children so more funny effects and stickers were added. For elderly, we kept the videos as simple as possible for them to understand and follow the content easily. Allocation of work and team communication were also important. Glad to have many responsible and considerate teammates so we could accomplish the task during the busy exam period!

HKBU Community Experience Project May - Aug 2022 | 44 HKBU students | 2,376 service hours

HKBU Community Experience Project (C.E.P.) was devised for students to foster HKBU students’ social consciousness and community engagement and develop their talents and servant leadership.

Students have gained valuable hands-on experience in NGOs or social enterprises by volunteering as trainees in different community partners in the summer, to understand their operations and get involved in different projects. Trainees were required to volunteer for not less than 54 hours during the summer from 1 June to 31 August 2022. In total 44 HKBU students were assigned to 18 units of community partners. By getting in touch with different service groups and leading different services programmes, students were able to sharpen their servant leadership and gain a better understanding of social needs.

General Education Courses Sept 2021 - Apr 2022 | 60 HKBU students | 870 service hours

In collaboration with the School of Chinese Medicine and Department of Religion and Philosophy, two General Education Courses, namely Paths to Service Leadership in Health Services and Service Leadership in Action (Health Services) were carried out.

Students were given opportunities to put what they have learned from the lectures in the elderly service.

Through the process of understanding the needs of the elderly, designing tailor-made activities, delivering the services and an evaluation of the achieved results together with a reflection on the service process and personal growth, the experiences successfully instill students’ with genuine service attitude towards the needy and enhance the lives of those in need.

Entrepreneurship Programme SEED Incubator 2021

StartUp Training Series Apr - May 2022 | 175 HKBU students

Startup Incubator provides a series of startup trainings to develop the essential capabilities required for challenging entrepreneurship journeys. Practical skills in establishing a startup business could be obtained after completing the trainings. Four thematic seminars were held, including ‘Online Business Trend Under COVID-19 & Low-Cost Marketing for StartUp’, ‘How to Build Characters for Your Social Media Channels?’, ‘Testimonies of Student Entrepreneurship’, and ‘Building Smart Commerce for Speed’.

Meet the Boss Series May - June 2021 | 296 HKBU students

Meet the Boss Series - StartUp Meet the Boss! is a series of virtual tours to provide BU-ers with opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of different business natures. Founders of ‘Walk in Hong Kong’, ‘Café REVOL’ and ‘GeTheMall’ were invited as the guests of three seminars to share their experiences through Zoom and pre-recorded videos. Nearly 300 students joined the online sessions to learn about their valuable experience in running the business.

StartUp Training Series Apr - May 2022 | 175 HKBU students

Startup Saturdays 2021 is a support scheme for students to gain first-hand experience in entrepreneurship. In the scheme, expert advice and seed money are offered. After two sessions of team matching and mock pitching, students got the chance to present their business plans to the judging panel. In the end, 5 teams have been selected and each is granted $30,000 seed money for their projects. Winning teams include Umirror, Civio , PetPetUnion, iRetireeHK and HyGGE.

Global Vision Programme HKBU Model United Nations Club Sep2021 - Aug 2022 | 7 executive committee members

HKBU MUN Club is an authentic simulation of the United Nations (UN) committee structure, where students assume the roles of United Nations member states to discuss and develop resolutions for issues of international scope and importance. The experience provides students with a fruitful journey of diplomacy, compromises, knowledge, learning, and friendships.

ExCos organised a wide range of events throughout the year, such as 3 training sessions from Oct to Dec 2021, MUN simulation in Jan 2022 and the Annual Conference (BUMUN conference) in Jun 2022. These events provided students with a platform to discuss current international affairs and the role of the United Nations.

After 4 training sessions, 7 ExCos and 3 members were selected to attend two virtual conferences, namely Geneva International Model United Nations and Harvard Model United Nations in Feb and Mar 2022.

ZHANG DANTONG Be fearless and open-minded! MUN is not always about wining, it is an opportunity for you to practice your leadership ability and enhance your public speaking skills. If someone question your position during the conference, don’t get intimidated, show them what you got from your research and be confident!

LIN CHUN LUNG Before the start of this journey, I was hesitated about being a delegate due to self-doubts.

However, during the conference, I tried to do my best and be confident in my preparation. It was rewarding when I discovered I am good at suggesting new insights or perspectives on different issues.

HKBU Backpacker Learning 2021-22 Sep 2021 - Aug 2022 | 5 teams | 13 HKBU students

In the past two years, many international exchange programmes and global exposure opportunities have plunged dramatically due to the pandemic. In order to encourage HKBU students to re-establish connections and friendships with people around the world, as well as provide services to the needy, this programme aims to support and sponsor student-initiated outbound projects for learning, flourishing, and/or serving the community.

Students are required to form teams of 2-4 students and submit a proposal for approval.

This year, 16 applications were received, in which 13 students in 5 teams are going to execute their outbound project during the Summer in 2022.

HKBUSU Sustainable Education Service Group (HKBUSU SESG) Nov 2021 - Oct 2022 | 9 executive committee members | 14 HKBU members

With the belief that 'poverty alleviation through education, equipping ourselves through helping others', HKBUSU SESG has provided various types of volunteer teaching services in Gansu every summer. The service was further expanded to Henan last year. Over the past 10 years, more than 3,000 students and teachers in Gansu were benefitted.

This year, 14 members were recruited and 2 training workshops were held in early Apr to equip members with knowledge of positive psychology and its application in children’s emotional management. After that, 23 HKBU students in total will provide around 2 weeks of volunteer service in 6 primary schools in Henan Province, approximately in Jul or Aug 2022.

Co-curricular Learning Programme CCL Discovery Series Sep 2021 - Mar 2022 | 2,006 HKBU students

LQC is committed to providing students with comprehensive and diverse range of non-formal learning opportunities which help expand their breadth of knowledge, stimulate their thinking, and broaden their horizons. 29 CCL activities were held, covering the themes of civic values, skills and knowledge, personal growth, community services as well as global insights and experience. Various topics such as Managing Performing Arts Centres, Sustainable Financing & Creating Changes, Dwelling in a Waste-free Apartment, and Tech Discovery for All Students were investigated in the workshops and seminars.

National Security Law Education Seminar Oct 2021 - May 2022 | 1,990 HKBU students

The Law of the People's Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (NSL) was enacted on July 1, 2020. In order to introduce related concepts and issues to students, LQC organised 14 sessions of the National Law Security Education Seminar with 1,990 attendance from Oct 2021 to May 2022.

Student Partners Wofoo Leadership Network Apr 2021 - Oct 2022 | 11 Executive Committee members

Wofoo Leadership Network (WLN) aims to promote the idea of “Responsible Citizenship” and build a harmonious and caring society. 11 HKBU students were selected as the Executive Committee Members in 2021-2022. During the pandemic, the ExCos organised a variety of activities, including 2 online activities and 3 face-to-face activities to offer HKBU students with meaningful experiences.

University YMCA Feb 2021 - Mar 2022 | 13 Student Executive Committee members

As student association affiliated to the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong, University YMCA aims to shape youths into future leaders with strong adaptability, creative insights and passion for serving the society through an array of distinguished learning experiences.

Student ExCos organized various programmes throughout the year, including 3 core series programmes focusing on social service, community engagement and global vision, 6 diversified developmental activities, 8 all-year round programmes and 4 joint-university programmes. A total of 1,097 HKBU students attended the programmes, with over 100 service recipients and 432 service hours accumulated.

ICAC Ambassador Programm Oct 2021 - Jun 2022 | 9 HKBU Committee members

As a collaboration of ICAC and tertiary institutions, ICAC Ambassador Programme enlists the creativity and efforts of university students in the promotion of integrity. This year, 9 HKBU students were selected as ICAC Ambassadors. Through jointuniversity leadership training, committee members were equipped with skills of communication and team collaboration. Amid the resurgence of pandemic, online quiz challenges and social media promotion were advocated to enrich fellows’ understanding of anti-corruption laws, personal integrity and ethical pitfalls on campus. Over 120 participants engaged in quiz games and 479 users were reached through social media.

WU QIAOSHAN ICAC Ambassador Programme taught me the importance of team building and communication, as well as the flexibility in resolving challenges. It was grateful to witness my change from a reserved teammate to a proactive vice-president, in coordinating with members and expressing views in meetings. Though the resurgence of COVID hindered our original plan, our teamwork and resilience helped us overcome the challenge, and successfully conducted the activity.

CHIN WING TUNG ICAC Ambassador Programme not only honed our competence in problem solving, but also reminded us about the value of integrity. Throughout the programme, the most important lesson to me was to prioritise righteousness and probity in event organization. Instead of using rewards to attract participants, we should focus on the content and message we hope to deliver.
