Perhaps the most famous ballet in the classical canon, Swan Lake ’s sweeping tale of good versus evil has long been considered one of the pinnacles of a company’s repertoire, highlighting the technical strength and artistic depth of its dancers at every rank. To celebrate the close of our 2023/24 season, Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) premieres this new Swan Lake , staged by Yuri Possokhov. With his Russian heritage and background as a Bolshoi Ballet star, modern-meets-classical approach to choreography, and emotional approach to character development, Yuri brings a strong narrative perspective to Swan Lake , mining the characters and story for some compelling emotional truths – particularly with respect to Prince Siegfried’s psychology and emotional state. He has developed a fascinating version of this timeless tale, filled with palace intrigue, imaginative fantasies and the eternal search for beauty.

Swan Lake ’s debut at the Bolshoi Ballet in the 1870s was a resounding failure, but after Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov unveiled their own version in 1895, the revival was an enormous success, and that’s the blueprint we’ve inherited today. Over the decades, Swan Lake has evolved with numerous companies and been adapted by many choreographers, including Mats Ek’s hardhitting contemporary adaptation, and Matthew Bourne’s all-male version. However, the essence of Swan Lake has remained the same, especially the dances in Act II and the Black Swan pas de deux in Act III.

This new production is HKB’s fourth adaptation of Swan Lake . The work first entered our repertory in 1988, with a staging by Andre Prokovsky. Stephen Jeffries’ production premiered in 1993 followed by John Meehan’s restaging in 2008, which included dances by Carlos Pacis and Selina Chau. We are truly excited to unveil Yuri’s sumptuous Swan Lake this week, and we’re glad you are here to share in it. Enjoy!

《天鵝湖》或許是最著名的古典芭蕾舞劇，正邪交鋒的故事迷倒不少觀眾。舞劇長久以來被視為芭蕾舞團最極致的舞碼之一，可以突顯一眾舞者的藝術才華及優秀舞技。來到 2023/24 舞季尾聲，港芭便以波索克霍夫新編的《天鵝湖》首演為舞季畫上句號。生於俄羅斯的他是莫斯科大劇院芭蕾舞團的星級舞者，編舞風格兼容當代與古典元素，擅以感性角度呈現角色的變化。他為《天鵝湖》添上強烈的敍事色彩，從故事及角色發掘出引人入勝的情感箴言，在描繪齊格菲王子的心理及情感狀態上尤其出彩。波索克霍夫就這部歷久不衰的經典作交出精闢的個人見解，作品盡是宮廷爭鬥的陰謀、天馬行空的狂想，以及對美的永恒追求。

《天鵝湖》由莫斯科大劇院芭蕾舞團於 1870 年代首演，結果慘遭滑鐵盧。經佩蒂巴及艾化李夫於 1895 年重新編排後，舞作才得到熱烈好評，港芭今次上演的版本亦以此為藍本。過去多年，無數編舞家及舞團曾改編及搬演此劇，例子有馬茨斯．厄克一針見血的當代改編版及馬修．伯恩的全男班版本。舞劇的精髓卻從來未變，特別是第二幕的舞蹈及第三幕的黑天鵝雙人舞。

今次是港芭第四度改編《天鵝湖》：舞團於 1988 年首度呈獻《天鵝湖》，由普羅柯夫斯基操刀改編，其後由謝傑斐於 1993 年再度搬演。至於米翰文於 2008 年重新編排的版本，舞者白家樂及周錦欣亦有份演出。能夠與觀眾分享波索克霍夫改編的全新製作，港芭感到非常興奮，亦很高興你入場支持，希望你會看得盡興！

ACT I 第一幕

As his birthday approaches, young Prince Siegfried is tormented by his search for beauty and obsessed with the image of swans. Childhood friends and members of the court joyfully arrive to celebrate Siegfried's birthday with him. In the midst of the excitement, the family jester of many years seeks to entertain Siegfried but feels mistreated and forgotten. The Queen mother arrives to tell Siegfried that it is time for him to marry.

年輕的齊格菲王子生辰將至，王子的兒時好友及宮廷朝臣歡欣地拜訪，一同與王子慶祝。在載歌載舞之際，宮廷小丑嘗試逗樂王子，苦苦追尋愛情的王子腦海中卻只想着天鵝的美態，小丑自覺被冷待及不受重視。皇后到訪，向王子說他已屆娶妻之齡。

ACT II 第二幕

The Jester’s bitter feelings bring out the dark side of his nature. He transforms into the sinister demon, Von Rothbart who creates hallucinations of swans to lure Siegfried to the lake. As night falls Siegfried runs to the lake where he discovers ethereal swan-like women. One in particular captures his imagination – beautiful, innocent Odette. She fulfils his dream of ideal beauty and gives him hope that he has finally found what he has been yearning.

小丑決心報復，激發起人性黑暗的一面。他化身邪魔羅伯特，創造天鵝幻象，將王子引誘至湖邊。當晚，王子看見一群脫俗出塵的女人以天鵝之姿在湖上出沒，被美麗無邪的奧德蒂深深吸引着。奧德蒂正是王子心中完美情人的化身，王子相信終於找到渴求多時的愛情。

ACT III 第三幕

As part of the birthday festivities, a ball has been arranged for Siegfried to choose a bride from among four foreign princesses vying for his hand in marriage, but none of them capture his attention. He cannot stop thinking of Odette. The calculating Jester transforms himself again, and Von Rothbart arrives with the seductive Odile to torment Siegfried and make him forget about any other woman. Spellbound, Siegfried chooses Odile as his bride, thinking that she is his beloved. Von Rothbart triumphantly reveals his masterful deceit, and the anguished prince immediately dashes to the lake.

王宮舉行慶祝舞會，讓王子從四位外國公主中挑選妻子，她們爭艷鬥麗，望能與王子共諧連理。

ACT IV 第四幕

Siegfried begs Odette’s forgiveness but it is too late, she is fated to remain captive forever. The betrayal has turned his hope into unspeakable tragedy, and a heartbroken Siegfried drowns himself in the lake. In the afterlife, he is reunited with his destiny at last – Odette.

王子懇求奧德蒂的原諒，但已經為時已晚，她註定被永遠囚禁。王子的背叛釀成悲劇，他的希望破滅，在心碎中投湖自盡。在死後世界，王子終與他的命定情人奧德蒂重逢。

Before his career as an award winning internationally renowned choreographer, Possokhov was a principal dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, and the San Francisco Ballet (SFB). His choreographic career began in 2000 when he created Magrittomania for SFB. Since then, he has continued to choreograph major works for SFB and other companies in the US including the Joffrey Ballet, the Atlanta Ballet, and Oregon Ballet Theatre. Internationally, he has choreographed for the Bolshoi Ballet, the English National Ballet, the Georgia State Ballet, the Stanislavsky Theatre, and the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre.

屢獲殊榮的編舞家波索克霍夫於國際享負盛名，他在成為編舞家之前，曾於莫斯科大劇院芭蕾舞團、丹麥皇家芭蕾舞團及三藩市芭蕾舞團擔任首席舞者。2000 年，他為三藩市芭蕾舞團編排《馬格利特之狂想》，自此開展編舞生涯，其後為舞團編排多部重要作品，其他曾合作的美國芭蕾舞團則包括佐飛芭蕾舞團、亞特蘭大芭蕾舞團及俄勒岡芭蕾舞劇院。他亦曾為美國以外各大芭蕾舞團擔任編舞，包括莫斯科大劇院芭蕾舞團、英國國家芭蕾舞團、格魯吉亞國家芭蕾舞團、史坦尼斯拉夫斯基劇院及彼爾姆歌劇及芭蕾舞劇院。

Matthew Ball was born in Liverpool, UK and joined The Royal Ballet School at age 11. He progressed through the ranks, becoming a Principal Dancer in 2018. Matthew has collaborated with renowned choreographers like Wayne McGregor, Crystal Pite and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. He has also choreographed his own work, including (Re)Current for The Royal Ballet and a commercial campaign for Xiaomi. Recently he has branched into different fields working on several fashion and film projects, including two dance shorts with Pennefather productions and co-starring with Francesca Hayward and Natalia Osipova in the feature length film Romeo and Juliet Beyond Words as Tybalt.

Constantine Allen trained at various ballet schools worldwide before joining Stuttgart Ballet in 2012. Within six months, he became a Soloist and was later promoted to Principal Dancer in 2013. Since 2018, he has been a Principal Dancer with Dutch National Ballet. Allen’s repertoire includes roles in classics like Giselle and Swan Lake as well as contemporary works like John Neumeier’s Othello with Stuttgart Ballet and Armand in John Neumeier’s La Dame aux Camélias with Dutch National Ballet. His notable accolades include the Grand Prix at Tanzolymp Berlin and the Bronze Medal at Youth America Grand Prix, New York.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is widely considered one of the most popular Russian composers in history. From a young age he demonstrated an incredible skill for melodic expression of strong emotions, which contributed to his creation of symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets and more. His masterpieces for theatre works include the opera Eugene Onegin and the ballets The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. The beautiful intensity of Tchaikovsky's music in his works has revered him among generations of music lovers.

Christopher STOWELL

Christopher Stowell was born in New York City and danced with the San Francisco Ballet for 16 years. As a Principal Dancer, he performed leading roles in full-length classics and contemporary works. Stowell was renowned for his interpretation of George Balanchine’s repertoire and appeared in nearly every Balanchine ballet performed by San Francisco Ballet. In 2003, Stowell became Artistic Director of Oregon Ballet Theatre for 10 years. In 2017-2022, Stowell was named the first Associate Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Canada. Stowell’s influence extends globally through his work as a choreographer, teacher and coach with companies across North America, Europe and Asia. Stowell has also staged the works of George Balanchine, Mark Morris and Christopher Wheeldon.

Recent projects include scenic and projection design for Orfeo ed Euridice at San Francisco Opera, scenic and projection design for The Headlands at American Conservatory Theater, scenic and projection design for Yuri Possokhov’s Violin Concerto at San Francisco Ballet and scenic and projection design for Fidelio at the Canadian Opera Company.

Sandra Woodall is a renowned costume designer who has collaborated with various performing arts groups since 1970. Her work spans ballet, modern dance, theater, music, and performance art. Woodall’s designs have graced stages worldwide, including the San Francisco Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet. Woodall has also received Isadora Duncan awards for her contributions to dance and Critics Circle awards for theatre. Notably, Woodall designed costumes for Yuri Possokhov’s Violin Concerto at San Francisco Ballet in 2023. Additionally, she worked with playwright and director Stan Lai on the premiere season of Theatre Above in Shanghai and later on his production AGO Her impact extends across the United States and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the world of performing arts.

Currently Resident Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Macao Orchestra and Programme Director of the Macao International Music Festival, Lio Kuokman was praised by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “a startling conducting talent”, and he has served as the first Chinese Assistant Conductor with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Educated at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, The Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the New England Conservatory, Lio is a founding member and President of the Macao Chamber Music Association.

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is regarded as one of the leading orchestras in Asia. Professionalised in 1974, the orchestra celebrates its 50th anniversary during the 2023/24 season. Collaborating with internationally renowned conductors and soloists, the orchestra presents more than 150 concerts and attracts more than 200,000 music lovers annually. The HK Phil promotes the work of Hong Kong and Chinese composers, commissions new works, nurtures local talent and runs extensive education and community programmes. With Music Director Jaap van Zweden since 2012, the HK Phil has toured Europe, Asia, Australia and extensively across Mainland China. Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) is recognised internationally as a world-class institution that represents Hong Kong's unique character. Since its inception in 1979, HKB has evolved into a vibrant performing arts organisation with a dynamic repertoire, forward-thinking community engagement initiatives and an emphasis on excellence.

Comprised of 50 dancers from all over the globe – Hong Kong, Mainland China and other parts of Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and North America, HKB has won recognition both regionally and internationally. With celebrated re-stagings of the classics, neoclassical masterworks by George Balanchine and others and original ballets created for HKB and about Hong Kong. Additionally, HKB performs works by some of today’s most sought-after choreographers, including Alexei Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, Justin Peck, Jiří Kylian, Nacho Duato and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa as well as innovative new works by its Choreographer-in-Residence, Hu Song-wei Ricky, and numerous emerging Hong Kong choreographers.

With almost 50 tours to 11 countries, HKB has recently toured throughout Europe, the US and Asia and places a special emphasis on representing Hong Kong in Mainland China and the West. HKB maintains the newly renamed Hong Kong Academy of Ballet, a professionally-oriented ballet school, as well as a full schedule of award-winning community programmes and crossover collaborations throughout Hong Kong to ensure ballet is accessible to all. HKB has also produced engaging original videos and dance films that have collectively garnered over 10 million views online, connecting with ballet lovers worldwide.

Septime Webre is an internationally recognised ballet director, choreographer, educator and advocate. He joined Hong Kong Ballet as its Artistic Director in July 2017 after 17 years as Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in Washington DC, US. Previously he served as Artistic Director of the American Repertory Ballet, based in Princeton, New Jersey, US for six years. In addition, Webre has served as the Artistic Director of Halcyon, a Washington DC-based foundation standing at the intersection of creativity and social impact.

Webre’s tenure at The Washington Ballet ushered in a period of unprecedented growth in the quality and breadth of its work-both onstage and in its engagement and educational initiatives, with its annual budget growing over 500% during that time. In Hong Kong, Webre has staged Romeo + Juliet set in the early 1960’s Hong Kong, and The Nutcracker set in Hong Kong in the early 20th century. Other HKB productions include Giselle , ALICE (in wonderland) , The Great Gatsby and Peter Pan

As a dancer, Webre was featured in solo and principal roles from the classical repertoire as well as in contemporary works by choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham. He has served on the juries of a number of international ballet competitions, including those in Varna, Bulgaria, Istanbul, Cape Town, New York, Seoul, and elsewhere. He has served on the board of Dance/USA and his work has received numerous honors, grants and awards. He holds a degree in History/Pre-Law from the University of Texas at Austin, and is the seventh son in a large, boisterous Cuban-American family.

衛承天是國際著名芭蕾舞團總監、編舞家、教育家及倡導者。他曾出任華盛頓芭蕾舞團藝術總監達 17 年，亦曾任美國新澤西普林斯頓美國經典芭蕾舞團藝術總監，並於 2017年 7月加入香港芭蕾舞團（港芭）擔任藝術總監。他曾是美國華盛頓一基金會 Halcyon 的藝術總監，其宗旨為透過創意推動文創發展，同時為社會帶來正面影響。

衛承天在任華盛頓芭蕾舞團期間，舞團預算大增 500%，並在舞台製作的規模和質素、專業舞蹈教學等多個範疇上獲得前所未有的提升。他近年為港芭全新創作包括：以 1960 年代香港作背景的《羅密歐 + 茱麗葉》和以二十世紀初香港作背景的《胡桃夾子》。衛承天亦曾為港芭製作《吉賽爾》、《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》、《大亨小傳》和《小飛俠》等多個劇目。
