大部分節目，當中許多節目更開放 予世界各地愛好藝術的觀眾 。

衷心祝賀香港藝術節今年踏入第 49 屆 。這一年一度的藝術盛事在新冠 肺炎疫情的挑戰下，仍然辦得有聲 有色，精采可期。

今年藝術節帶來一連串繽紛多彩的 網 上 及 現 場 節 目， 涵 蓋 音 樂、 歌 劇、戲劇、舞蹈、電影等多個藝術 範疇 。總體來說，藝術節會在「遠 在咫尺」的主題下，呈獻合共約三百 場節目、活動及表演。 藝術節的亮點，包括捷克布爾諾國 家歌劇院及其兩年一度「布爾諾楊 納傑克節」的多場精選數碼版歌劇 及音樂會 。同樣引人注目的，還有 兩部取材自英國劇作家尼爾 ．巴奈 特改編劇作《鼠疫》的發人深省作 品，一部為英語版，另一部為粵語 版。粵語版為香港本地製作，英語 版則由身處六個地區的六名演員作 網上實時演出。來自蘇格蘭鄉村的 魔術師史葛．蕭凡亦會在網上實時 演出，他的互動作品《心靈旅程》每 場只限三十位觀眾參與 。此外，亦 有十六部慶祝香港賽馬會當代舞蹈 平台十周年的製作，包括與中國內 地及英國藝術家合力創作的作品 。 在藝術節開幕演出中，香港中樂團 會進行兩首曲目的世界首演，而廣 獲讚譽的莫斯科莫伊謝耶夫舞團， 則會為這國際藝壇盛會作閉幕演出。 我很高興市民可於登記後免費觀賞

It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the staging of its 49th annual celebration of the arts, and doing so in splendid fashion despite the daunting challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s Festival features a cheering range of online and in-venue programmes showcasing music, opera, theatre, dance, film and more.

In all, the Festival presents some 300 events, activities and performances under the theme “Separate Together”.

Festival highlights include a dazzling digital selection of operas and concerts from the Czech Republic’s National Theatre Brno and its biennial Janá ek Brno Festival. Equally notable are two piercing productions of British playwright Neil Bartlett’s adaptation of The Plague, one in English, the other in Cantonese. The Cantonese version is produced in Hong Kong, while the English version is a live

online performance starring six actors in six time zones. Illusionist Scott Silven also performs online and live, from rural Scotland. His interactive production, The Journey, is limited to 30 participants per show. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Contemporary Dance Series celebrates its 10th anniversary with 16 productions, including collaborations with artists from the Chinese mainland and the United Kingdom. The Festival opens with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra performing two world premieres and concludes its international slate with the acclaimed Igor Moiseyev Ballet from Moscow.

I find it particularly gratifying to note that the vast majority of events are available free of charge, upon registration, with many of them open to arts lovers from all over the world.

The Arts Festival’s promotion of arts education in schools continues. And PLUS programmes bring together audiences and artists through behindthe-scenes videos, artist dialogues and pre- and post-performance talks.

For all that, and much more, I am grateful to the inspired diligence and dedication of the Hong Kong Arts Festival team. My thanks, too, to the sponsors and donors for their generous support of the arts and culture, particularly in these trying times.

The Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts in February and March each year.

Since its launch in 1973, the HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres—from music, opera, Chinese opera and ballet to break dance and experimental theatre. International guests have included major state operas, established theatres, top orchestras and stars of the day. We also frequently partner with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional new works.

We have also collaborated with Hong Kong’s own creative talent to produce work which is now part of the local canon and to showcase emerging local artists. Over the years, the HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance—many with successful subsequent performances in Hong Kong and overseas.

As part of our enduring commitment to enriching the cultural life of the city, we organise a diverse range of Festival PLUS activities for the community before and during the Festival to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include film screenings, masterclasses, exhibitions,

Beyond the main Festival, the HKAF also promotes inclusivity and understanding through the arts. Its “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

To nurture the next generation of artists and audiences, the HKAF also invests heavily in yearround arts education for young people. Over the past 29 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 782,000 local secondary and tertiary school students; members can enjoy showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, Festival performances and in-school workshops led by international and local artists. Donations to the Student Ticket Scheme also make approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets available each year.

The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Its principal income sources are: recurrent funding from the government, box office revenues, and sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations which form a significant portion of total income and also enables the HKAF to receive support from the Government’s matching scheme that matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations.

我在九十年代中期發現作家荷 西 ． 薩 拉 馬 哥 的 著 作， 之 後 於 1999 年， 當 我 在 阿 姆 斯 特 丹創作歌劇《阿依達》時，一 氣 呵 成 地 讀 完《盲 流 感》。 讀 後，感覺為之震撼，小說很黑 暗，異常的黑暗，挑戰讀者去 想像整個世界除了一個女人之 外， 其 餘 所 有 人 都 失 明 了 。 薩拉馬哥同時是諾貝爾文學獎 得主，透過這本小說向讀者叩 問：「作 為 人 類， 我 們 將 如 何 應對文明在疫症下瓦解 ？」讀 完此書後，我便開始思考可否 將小說改編成劇作，搬上舞台 演出 。

I discovered the work of writer José Saramago in the mid-90s and then in 1999, while working on the opera Aida in Amsterdam, I read Blindness in one sitting.

It took my breath away. It was dark, incredibly dark and such a provocation for the reader to imagine a world in which everybody except one woman had gone blind. Saramago, who in the meantime had won the Nobel Prize for Literature, asked the question: how would we as human beings react to a breakdown of civilisation in the form of an epidemic? Soon after finishing the book, I started to think, could this novel be adapted for the stage?

在 過 去 二 十 年， 我 先 後 三 次 嘗試將這本精采的小說搬上舞 台 。第一次在 2005 年，當時我 在德累斯頓國家劇院的一間新 文本寫作劇院擔任藝術總監 。 《盲流感》不但影射德國歷史中 最黑暗的一頁，似乎還是回應 近年在德累斯頓冒起的極右主 義的最佳作品 。不過，因為物 流和安排上的考慮，製作最終 無法實現 。

2008 年， 我 遷 居 倫 敦， 並 擔 任新域劇團的副導演 。我再次 嘗試搬演此劇，於巴特西發電 站的海濱長廊創作場域特定演 出，以回應當時的金融危機 。 可是，財務上未能成事，搬演 又一次失敗 。

Over 20 years, I have made three attempts to stage this incredible novel. First, in 2005 as artistic director of a new writing company within the State Theatre of Dresden. Blindness alludes to the darkest chapter in German history and seemed to be the perfect material to address the recent rise of the far-right in Dresden. Unfortunately, for logistical reasons, the production didn’t materialise.

In 2008, having moved to London and become an associate director at the Young Vic, I tried to stage the production in response to the financial crisis as a site-specific promenade piece at Battersea Power Station. Unfortunately, the finances didn’t come through.

時間快進，來到 2016 年脫歐公 投，以及民族主義在英國急速 冒起之後，我覺得有迫切需要 將小說製作成舞台作品 。當時 我 在 曼 徹 斯 特 擔 任 HOME 藝 術中心的藝術總監，於是委約 西 蒙． 史 提 芬 斯 為 我 進 行 改 編 的 工 作 。 他 優 雅、 輕 巧 的 文筆，於我而言似乎是處理這 本鉅著的最佳編劇人選，史提 芬斯猶如一個雕塑家，能把一 本三百頁的小說濃縮成三十五 頁 。他的第一稿有十個角色， 舞台指示寫着：一百人進場 。 可想而知，製作規模之大將會 是一大挑戰，但至少我們有初 步 構 思 ！ 2019 年 3 月， 經 過 在英國國家劇院為期一星期的 工作坊，我們有幸與一個大型 劇團合作，並由演技精湛的茱 麗葉 ．史提芬森擔演主角，其 後，西蒙忽發其想，將他之前 的改編變成獨白形式 。這就是 我於 2020 年初交予多瑪倉庫劇 院的版本，當時完全沒有預料 到一場真正的疫症將會影響全 球人類的生活 。 在我這二十年的旅程之中，這 些材料一直伴隨我穿梭各個城 市， 使 我 意 識 到 過 去 這 麼 多 年來，世界已有翻天覆地的改 變，亦讓我反思作為劇場製作 人，去回應重大社會及政治事 件是多麼重要，也令我思考究 竟我們希望生活在一個怎樣的 世界 。我由衷感激多瑪倉庫劇 院於原著面世二十多年後，在 遵從社交距離措施的情況下， 將《盲流感》搬上舞台，呈現 一個令人意想不到的新視點 。

Fast-forward again: after the Brexit referendum in 2016 and the palpable rise of nationalism in the UK, I felt the urge to return to the novel and commissioned Simon Stephens to write an adaptation for me in my new position as artistic director of HOME in Manchester. With his beautiful, sparse writing, he seemed to me the perfect playwright to tackle this epic novel and, like a sculptor, he was able to shape the essence of a 300-page novel into 35 pages.

His first draft had ten characters and stage directions which said: enter 100 people. The magnitude of the project was going to be a challenge, but we had a draft!

After a week-long workshop at the National Theatre Studio in March 2019, working with a large company and the extraordinary Juliet Stevenson in the leading role, Simon came up with the idea of turning his adaptation into a monologue. This was the draft I passed to the Donmar at the beginning of 2020, without an awareness of how a real epidemic was about to affect all of our lives.

Director’s Introduction

My personal journey with the material across these different cities has made me reflect on how volatile the past 20 years have been and how essential it is for us theatre-makers to respond to these major social and political events, and to reflect on what kind of world we want to live in. I am incredibly grateful to the Donmar that, after two decades, Blindness has found an unexpected new vision for its performance, adapted to the rules of socially distancing.

多 瑪 倉 庫 劇 院 是 英 國 在 2020 年夏天第一次封城令解除後首 個重開的劇場 。疫情如何影響 劇作的進程？是否純粹因應 防疫的實際情況而拉開觀眾的 距離 ？ 在我與多瑪倉庫劇院藝術總監 米 高． 朗 赫 斯 特 早 期 的 溝 通 中，已得悉無法請茱麗葉在現 場演出，所以利用耳機作為演 出形式的意向於早期討論時已 初 步 成 形 。 最 為 有 趣 的 是， 防疫措施形塑了這部製作的概 念：觀眾在舞台上保持社交距 離，他們成為演出的主角 。劇 場設計師莉茲 ．克拉肯投放了 許多心思，考慮如何以靈活的 方式安排觀眾座位 。

Donmar Warehouse was the first British theatre to reopen after the first lockdown was lifted in 2020 summer. How did the pandemic conditions shape the logistics of the production? Was it simply a pragmatic choice to have the audience distanced in the way it was?

audiences were placed in a socially distanced way onstage; they became the protagonists of the show. Lizzie Clachan (the designer) put a lot of thought into how the audiences were going to be seated in a dynamic way.

It was clear in our first conversations that we couldn’t have Juliet live on stage, so the idea of a headphone show took shape early on in my conversations with Michael Longhurst (artistic director, Donmar Warehouse). What was very interesting that the pandemic restrictions shaped the concept of this production: 17

這次的音效設計與你平常的製 作有分別嗎 ？ 無可否認，音效是整個製作的 核心，但《盲流感》事實上是 一個音效及燈光裝置作品 。我 們成功找到一個新的方式，讓 燈光裝置與音效互動交流，有 時演出環境會進入兩個不同的 極端情況，也許是完全黑暗， 也許是刺眼的光明 。演出的第 二部分是焦點之一，我們利用 「人頭錄音」技術錄製茱麗葉的 獨白，讓觀眾沉浸於她的環迴 立體聲演之中 。對於每一部分 使用哪些咪高峰，我們都經過 深思熟慮，這些做法絕對與一 般演出截然不同 。但總之，音 效和燈光的設計十分關鍵，加 上茱麗葉的演出亦非常出色 。 茱麗葉．史提芬森雖然是以 聲 音 演 出， 但 卻 能 完 美 傳 遞 薩拉馬哥小說中的陰森和可怕 感 覺 。 在 舞 台 製 作 上， 運 用 旁白這種表演形式有甚麼具體 挑戰 ？ 我不會說這是旁白 。尤其在第 二部分，茱麗葉全情投入到角 色之中，整個錄音過程就像用 咪高峰拍攝她一樣，每段錄音 都加入了許多細節 。我覺得我 們最欣賞茱麗葉之處是，觀眾 透過她的聲演相信自己正在親 眼見證一個社會的崩壞，能以 一把聲音就達至這個效果，真 令人驚歎 。

Did you approach the sound design any differently to how you would for a regular show?

Indeed, sound is at the heart of the production. However, Blindness is really a sound and light installation. We found a new way how the light installation interacts with the sound, sometimes going into the extremes of complete darkness or blinding light. One of the highlights of the show is part two, in which we recorded Juliet with a binaural head, audiences are experiencing a three dimensional performance

by Juliet. A lot of thought went into which microphones we could use for each part. And this was definitely a different approach to a normal show. But again, sound and lights were the key ingredients with a superb performance by Juliet.

Juliet Stevenson delivers the narrative all on her own, yet manages to perfectly convey the sinister menace of Saramago’s novel. What were the particular challenges of delivering a stage production using voiceover?

I wouldn’t call it a voiceover.

In part two, especially, Juliet inhabits the character and the recording process was like filming her with a microphone. A lot of detail went into each take.

I think the biggest compliment we can make Juliet is that the audiences believe through her voice that we are witnessing a breakdown of a whole society— to pull that off as a singular voice is quite remarkable.

Do you think this type of stageless theatre without actors can be replicated in other contexts?

We are actually working with the same team on another sound project, this time with a surround system. We are still in the early stages, but I think we have all really enjoyed working together in this way. But at the same time, I think we are all also craving to work on productions with actors being present on stage again. I don’t think it’s an either/or.

Voice of the Storyteller/Doctor’s wife – Juliet Stevenson

Juliet Stevenson is one of Britain’s leading actors. Her most recent theatre credits include The Doctor—for which she won the Critics’ Circle Award for Best Actress and an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress, currently pending, Mary Stuart, Hamlet (Almeida Theatre/ West End) and Wings, Happy Days (Young Vic). Juliet won the Olivier Award for Best Actress in 1991 for her performance in Death and the Maiden, and has been nominated a further five times.

Stevenson has received five BAFTA nominations for her work on screen. Her films include Truly, Madly, Deeply (Evening Standard Film Award for Best Actress); Bend it Like Beckham; When Did You Last See Your Father? and Being Julia.

Stevenson’s latest television work includes Riviera and Out of Her Mind, a comedy series with Sara Pascoe, which aired from October 2020. Her other credits include One of Us and The Enfield Haunting, and she appeared as a series regular in Atlantis and The Village.

Director – Walter Meierjohann

Walter Meierjohann was artistic director of HOME from 2013 to 2018 and international associate director at the Young Vic in London. At the Young Vic, his productions included the European premiere of In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell McCraney and Kafka’s Monkey, which toured to Sydney, Melbourne, Athens, Paris, Tokyo, Istanbul, Taipei and New York.

Kafka’s Monkey, which starred Kathryn Hunter, also showed in HOME’s 2015 opening season, with Hunter reprising her lead role.

Meierjohann has worked extensively in Germany and the UK at theatres including the Barbican Centre; Liverpool Playhouse Theatre; Nottingham Playhouse; Curve Theatre, Leicester; Residenztheater, Munich; Staatsschauspiel, Dresden; Schauspielhaus, Graz; and Arena, Berlin, for Peter Stein’s Faust Ensemble and Impulse Theatre Festival. Prior to joining the Young Vic, Walter was Artistic Director of Neubau at the State Theatre of Dresden.

In opera, he has assisted the late Klaus-Michael Grüber in his productions of Aida (Nederlands Opera, Amsterdam) and Don Giovanni (Ruhrfestspiele).

The Donmar Warehouse is a 251-seat, not-for-profit theatre in Covent Garden, London, led by artistic director Michael Longhurst and executive director Henny Finch. Their mission is to bring together a wide variety of people in their intimate warehouse space and elsewhere to create, witness and participate in thrilling, world-class theatre.

The Donmar has won more than 100 awards in its 28-year history, with highlights of the programme including founder artistic director Sam Mendes’s productions of Cabaret (with Alan Cumming) and The Blue Room (with Nicole Kidman).

Michael Grandage (Artistic Director 2002–2012) brought notable productions of Othello with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ewan McGregor, and Red with Alfred Molina and Eddie Redmayne.
