大部分節目，當中許多節目更開放 予世界各地愛好藝術的觀眾 。

衷心祝賀香港藝術節今年踏入第 49 屆 。這一年一度的藝術盛事在新冠 肺炎疫情的挑戰下，仍然辦得有聲 有色，精采可期。

今年藝術節帶來一連串繽紛多彩的 網 上 及 現 場 節 目， 涵 蓋 音 樂、 歌 劇、戲劇、舞蹈、電影等多個藝術 範疇 。總體來說，藝術節會在「遠 在咫尺」的主題下，呈獻合共約三百 場節目、活動及表演。 藝術節的亮點，包括捷克布爾諾國 家歌劇院及其兩年一度「布爾諾楊 納傑克節」的多場精選數碼版歌劇 及音樂會 。同樣引人注目的，還有 兩部取材自英國劇作家尼爾 ．巴奈 特改編劇作《鼠疫》的發人深省作 品，一部為英語版，另一部為粵語 版。粵語版為香港本地製作，英語 版則由身處六個地區的六名演員作 網上實時演出。來自蘇格蘭鄉村的 魔術師史葛．蕭凡亦會在網上實時 演出，他的互動作品《心靈旅程》每 場只限三十位觀眾參與 。此外，亦 有十六部慶祝香港賽馬會當代舞蹈 平台十周年的製作，包括與中國內 地及英國藝術家合力創作的作品 。 在藝術節開幕演出中，香港中樂團 會進行兩首曲目的世界首演，而廣 獲讚譽的莫斯科莫伊謝耶夫舞團， 則會為這國際藝壇盛會作閉幕演出。 我很高興市民可於登記後免費觀賞

It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the staging of its 49th annual celebration of the arts, and doing so in splendid fashion despite the daunting challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s Festival features a cheering range of online and in-venue programmes showcasing music, opera, theatre, dance, film and more.

In all, the Festival presents some 300 events, activities and performances under the theme “Separate Together”.

Festival highlights include a dazzling digital selection of operas and concerts from the Czech Republic’s National Theatre Brno and its biennial Janá ek Brno Festival. Equally notable are two piercing productions of British playwright Neil Bartlett’s adaptation of The Plague, one in English, the other in Cantonese. The Cantonese version is produced in Hong Kong, while the English version is a live

online performance starring six actors in six time zones. Illusionist Scott Silven also performs online and live, from rural Scotland. His interactive production, The Journey, is limited to 30 participants per show. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Contemporary Dance Series celebrates its 10th anniversary with 16 productions, including collaborations with artists from the Chinese mainland and the United Kingdom. The Festival opens with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra performing two world premieres and concludes its international slate with the acclaimed Igor Moiseyev Ballet from Moscow.

I find it particularly gratifying to note that the vast majority of events are available free of charge, upon registration, with many of them open to arts lovers from all over the world.

The Arts Festival’s promotion of arts education in schools continues. And PLUS programmes bring together audiences and artists through behindthe-scenes videos, artist dialogues and pre- and post-performance talks.

For all that, and much more, I am grateful to the inspired diligence and dedication of the Hong Kong Arts Festival team. My thanks, too, to the sponsors and donors for their generous support of the arts and culture, particularly in these trying times.

The Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts in February and March each year.

Since its launch in 1973, the HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres—from music, opera, Chinese opera and ballet to break dance and experimental theatre. International guests have included major state operas, established theatres, top orchestras and stars of the day. We also frequently partner with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional new works.

We have also collaborated with Hong Kong’s own creative talent to produce work which is now part of the local canon and to showcase emerging local artists. Over the years, the HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance—many with successful subsequent performances in Hong Kong and overseas.

As part of our enduring commitment to enriching the cultural life of the city, we organise a diverse range of Festival PLUS activities for the community before and during the Festival to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include film screenings, masterclasses, exhibitions,

Beyond the main Festival, the HKAF also promotes inclusivity and understanding through the arts. Its “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

To nurture the next generation of artists and audiences, the HKAF also invests heavily in yearround arts education for young people. Over the past 29 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 782,000 local secondary and tertiary school students; members can enjoy showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, Festival performances and in-school workshops led by international and local artists. Donations to the Student Ticket Scheme also make approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets available each year.

The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Its principal income sources are: recurrent funding from the government, box office revenues, and sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations which form a significant portion of total income and also enables the HKAF to receive support from the Government’s matching scheme that matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations.

Arnold Schönberg’s musical legacy (1874–1951) can be somewhat confusing for contemporary audiences. His most radical gestures tend to be emphasised in musical education and the popular sphere, masking the variety and range of his approaches and often also his most valuable work. A common misconception, for example, is that Schönberg’s atonal techniques are emotionally cold, when he aspired to maximum emotional distress, devoid of any sentiment. Also commonplace is the notion that folk music, which had a great influence on the development of musical style in the 20th century, held no interest for Schönberg. Not only did he constantly return to folk songs at different stages of his career, he scrupulously incorporated original folk melodies in his choruses. At a time when choral arrangements of folksongs had passed into gimmickry, Schönberg worked them into his advanced multitonal compositions.

Schönberg’s stubbornness is evident in folksongs and is refracted through a typically deep passion for tradition.

Modal tunes of the 15th and 16th centuries, their provenance now untraceable, are integrated using a range of contrapuntal techniques.

Tonight's concert features three of his folk songs arranged in such fashion during 1928–1929, and the second song, “Two good playmates went”, surprises with its rigid rhythm.

Minimalism deprived classical music of many characteristics that were previously common, mainly related to the elite character and complexity of craftsmanship. Originally a radical creative experiment, often in symbiosis with musical theatre (Philip Glass and Robert Wilson), it soon in its turn became mainstream. The targeted reduction of musical resources takes diverse forms and there are numerous distinctive creative individualities, particularly in the European reaction to minimalism.

The composer Arvo Pärt belongs to the older generation of minimalists who, before they started to eschew style, underwent a classical musical education and acquired complex knowledge of the craft. A spiritual atmosphere derived from pealing bells, which he calls tintinnabuli, is typical of Pärt’s style. In twovoice compositions, one voice uses only three notes of the accompanying chord while the second voice moves diatonically in a stepwise motion. Both are thus conducted with maximum abandon and ease; they use naively simple techniques but in tune they form multiple

typical dissonances. An equally important characteristic of Pärt’s style is an overall ascetic atmosphere, with silence playing a key role and each sound is foregrounded.

Pärt has made few changes to the distinctive style since he introduced it in 1976. Each performance of his vocal works, particularly in churches and other venues that allow for long acoustic reverberation, is a deep spiritual experience. This is particularly true of his work from the last 20 years.

Nunc dimittis, also known as the Song of Simeon, is one of the biblical songs of praise most frequently put to music and used in the liturgy. The song relates the episode in the Gospel of Saint Luke where Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for initiation. The old man Simeon, who was prophesied to see the Saviour during his lifetime approaches them. His hymn brings together the fulfilment of a long-anticipated joy and the certainty of approaching death. That has made it popular for both everyday liturgy and funerals. Pärt’s artistic work was commissioned for the Choir of Edinburgh’s St Mary’s Cathedral, of the Scottish Episcopal Church, which observes the Church of England liturgy. The hymn was first performed in the cathedral on 15 August 2001 as part of the Marian vespers “Choral Evensong”. A non-authorial but authorised version for seven saxophones was created 15 years later. This simple composition 17

The later Virgencita sets to music fragments of Spanish lyrics of basic Marian prayers to the Virgin of Guadalupe, patron and protector of America.

The site of a purported Marian apparition in 1531 in what is now a suburb of Mexico City has become the world’s most visited Christian pilgrimage site. The Mexican Ambassador to Estonia invited Arvo Pärt to the annual El Cervantino in Guanajuato, one of the world’s biggest arts festivals. In preparation for the composition, the composer familiarised himself with the mystical picture of the Virgin of Guadalupe, enshrined within the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

Josef Suk (1874–1935) in Czech culture is viewed as a musical romanticist in the Liszt mould, a composer known for high-profile artistic conceptions, often based on significant literary work with an appreciation for immense orchestral sound without being properly operatic. Professional performances were also the main source of income for Liszt and Suk and each had an interest in folk music. Ironically, these “deniers” of opera were each related by marriage to one of the foremost composers of tragic romantic opera. Suk’s fatherin-law was Antonín Dvo ák, composer of Rusalka, while Liszt’s son-in-law was Richard Wagner, the author of Tristan and Isolde. It is a loss for Czech music that Josef Suk’s work has received less recognition because of Dvo ák’s towering shadow. Suk was no secondrate composer but lacked the series of big hits his father-in-law enjoyed.

Josef Suk felt happy, in terms of creativity and human aspects, for a short period only, in what was his “Radúz” period. “Spring in the soul; spring in music,” he would later think of it. He began his work on setting Zeyer’s

fairytale Radúz and Mahulena to music in 1897. A year later, Suk married Dvo ák’s daughter Otilka. The marriage spurred his compositions but this idyll was cut short first by Dvo ák’s death in 1904 and then Otilka’s a year later.

Apart from Radúz and Mahulena, there was also during this period his composition Ten Songs, Op 15, composed mostly for three voices but also two voices and four voices, with four-hand piano accompaniment. Otilka selected, adjusted and ordered the lyrics from the same sources Dvo ák mined. Half of the songs are Slovak and there is one each from Moravia, Silesia, Poland, Kashubia and Serbia.

The songs are between one and two minutes long, except for the longer introductory song Sorrow, which takes Radúz as a theme. Piano functions not only as accompaniment but forms the character of the songs, even more so than the vocals, mainly in the introductions and finales.

Johann Nepomuk David (1895–1977) is one of Austria’s most frequently performed composers, being particularly prominent in both the Catholic and Protestant liturgies. Born into a spiritually minded family— the fourth of 13 children—for the young David, music was part of daily life; along with his siblings he formed a chamber ensemble.

At the age of ten, David became, like Anton Bruckner almost 70 years earlier, a choirboy at the Augustinian monastery of St Florian near Linz. The education each received, similar to Leoš Janá ek’s in another Augustinian monastery in Brno, was what we would nowadays consider comprehensive. Piano and violin were the bedrock of the education, with organ and singing also prominent. Young choristers also received a general education and a personal spiritual development. During his career, David worked as teacher, choirmaster and conductor, often in leading positions. Though Catholic, he was an organist at the Evangelical church in Wels for many years and he became an eminent expert in Protestant choral music.

David was a thoughtful, even speculative creator who incorporated numerous historical references in his manuscripts, particularly classical and modern counterpoints and harmony, often stretched to the twelve-tone limit. He approached serialism in a mathematical fashion, using the so-called magic square. He is considered to be in the historical line of masters of counterpoint following Desprez, Bach and Reger. Perhaps because he stood outside the mainstream of musical development, his legacy does not feature much in schoolbooks, though that is hardly to his detriment. Not that he helped his own legacy, destroying many of his early compositions when he turned 40. Many of the compositions that he chose to hold onto perished during the Second World War in the bombing of Leipzig, where he was teaching at the Musikhochschule. David adapted the lyrics of poets such as Hölderlin, Morgenstern and Brecht in his secular choral work, though arrangements of popular folk songs were more common. The cycle of Ten Folksongs for mixed three voices and four voices mostly incorporates simple chants, not vocally complex but harmonically imaginative and thus popular.

Today’s selection includes a triad of four voices, particularly the last of them—the 17th-century folk song “Es ist ein Schnitter, heißt der Tod” (“There is a reaper named Death”) — one of the best known German songs of all time.

Few artists are as inseparable from their location as Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) was from Vienna. He was steeped in the city’s distinctive and varied musical tradition with its unparalleled focus on instrumental music. His role model was Beethoven, who embodied so-called absolute music, which used nothing more than an orchestra or chamber ensemble, as opposed to “programme music”, which had as an accompaniment dance, prayer or theatre. Brahms also eschewed the main trappings of romantic music, such as opera, but he did not go so far as to refuse vocal music altogether.

He was popular even among musical amateurs and in the world of light music.

The influential German philosopher Georg Friedrich Daumer (1800–1875) made numerous translations and adaptations of foreign poetry, including Persian and Oriental.

His Songbook of World Poetry, published in 1855, compiled lyrics, 18 of which were adapted

by Brahms in the first set (Op 52) of his Love Song Waltzes in 1869.

His main musical inspiration was undoubtedly Schubert’s piano dances. The original versions of many of the most popular Viennese waltzes were composed for choir and piano.

For example, Strauss’s famous Blue Danube was originally conceived for a Viennese male choir group, with lyrics provided by a choir poet. The cycle of short songs in Love Song Waltzes is cast ad libitum and would have been performed by varied groups, such as quartets, which would have been Brahms’s original intention, to large choirs.

The compositions are mostly for four voices but there are also two for one voice, and four for two voices. Brahms himself later arranged the entire cycle as Op 52a for four-hand piano without choir. It was these popular choral compositions, rather than symphonies or concertos, that would make Brahms wealthy.

decided to use the poet Daumer’s translated texts for the composition is not known, but some believe that the motivation was his unfulfilled love for Clara Schumann, the wife of Robert Schumann.

The Arnold Schoenberg Choir was founded in 1972 by Erwin Ortner, who is its current artistic director, and remains one of the most versatile and in-demand vocal ensembles in Austria. The choir’s repertoire ranges from Renaissance and Baroque to contemporary music. It has a particular interest in a cappella music, but also regularly performs large-scale works for choir and orchestra.

As well as concert performances, the choir regularly takes part in opera productions, its first being Schubert’s Fierrabras at the Vienna Festwochen in 1988 (directed by Ruth Berghaus and conducted by Claudio Abbado).

Others include Messiaen’s Saint François d’Assise in 1992 (directed

by Peter Sellars and conducted

by Esa‑Pekka Salonen) and the world premiere of Berio’s Cronaca del Luogo at the Salzburg Festival in 1999 (directed by Claus Guth and conducted by Sylvain Cambreling).

The Arnold Schoenberg Choir received the International Opera Award for Best Opera Chorus of 2017, and in 2018 was awarded the Österreichischer Musiktheaterpreis for Best Chorus.

Company Profile

of the complete choral works of Franz Schubert, conducted by Erwin Ortner. Later recordings of the Arnold Schoenberg Choir in collaboration with Nikolaus Harnoncourt include an album of Bach cantatas, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and Haydn’s The Seasons, which was awarded the German Echo Klassik Prize 2010.

The Arnold Schoenberg Choir also featured in Harnoncourt’s final recording, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis.

Recent CD releases under the choir’s own label ASC Edition include Die Nacht ist kommen (choral works by Max Reger); Komm, Jesu, Komm (Bach motets) and Stille Nacht, a programme of a cappella Christmas carols.

International tours have taken the Arnold Schoenberg Choir to numerous prestigious venues in Asia and America, as well as festivals in Europe.

For almost 40 years, the choir had a close association with the late conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt—a musical partnership that produced many highly acclaimed recordings, culminating in a 2002 Grammy Award for their recording of Bach’s St Matthew Passion.

In 1994 an international panel presented the choir with the Classical Music Award for Best Choir. The Arnold Schoenberg Choir also received numerous other prizes, including the German Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, the French Diapason d’or, the Belgian Prix Caecilia and the Japanese Grand Prize of the Academy Awards, for its 1996 recording 29

Artistic Director and Choirmaster – Erwin Ortner

Erwin Ortner is a former member of the Vienna Boys’ Choir and studied at the Academy of Music in Vienna. Since 1980, he has held a full professorship of choral conducting and choral voice training, and was Dean of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna from 1996 to 2002. Erwin Ortner is the founder and artistic director of the Arnold Schoenberg Choir, whose long association with Nikolaus Harnoncourt was honoured in 2002 with a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance. Ortner’s frequent appearances as a guest conductor demonstrate his manifold activities both throughout Austria and abroad.

Erwin Ortner is also sought after internationally as a lecturer and adjudicator for masterclasses in orchestral and choral conducting. In 2010 he became the artistic director of the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle, founded in 1498.

克利斯多夫 ．特克斯勒在上奧 地利邦出生和長大，於林茨和 維也納接受教育 。他涉獵層面 廣泛，確立其國際鋼琴家的地 位 。他浸淫於古典音樂傳統， 但並不囿於古典音樂；他同時 是音樂團體愛樂者聯盟的成員 之一，聯盟成員來自維也納與 柏林愛樂等歐洲頂尖樂團，致 力推進古典音樂的界限 。他充 滿熱誠及同理心，經驗豐富， 對演奏的曲目暸如指掌，令他 在鋼琴獨奏、室樂演奏、伴奏 和大學教育等各個範疇都大受 歡迎，在年輕國際鋼琴家一輩 中地位出眾 。

Pianist – Christoph Traxler

Born and raised in Upper Austria and educated in Linz and Vienna, Christoph Traxler has established himself internationally as a pianist with an enormously wide range. Steeped in the classical tradition, he goes beyond the boundaries of classical music with the ensemble Philharmonix—the Vienna Berlin Music Club. His passion, empathy, experience, as well as his repertoire and knowledge, make him an in-demand solo artist, chamber musician, accompanist and university lecturer, and emphasise his prominence among the young international generation of pianists.

達莉亞 ．沃爾科娃 1991 年出生 於烏茲別克，五歲時首次學習 鋼琴，跟隨維多利亞 ．貝加洛 娃上課，並於 1998 至 2005 年期 間入讀烏斯賓斯基音樂學校 。 2002 年在哈薩克國際鋼琴比賽 中獲得季軍，翌年在烏茲別克 全國鋼琴比賽中獲得亞軍 。後 來，她獲邀到莫斯科國立柴可 夫斯基音樂學院學習 。 沃爾科娃其後在維也納音樂與 表演藝術大學師從克里斯多 夫 ．辛特伯，並於 2013 年首次 在維也納音樂協會大樓玻璃廳 獨奏演出 。2015 年，她在維也 納音樂與表演藝術大學與學生 們演繹專輯《芬妮及威廉 ．亨 賽爾——婚姻場景》的曲目 。

Darya Volkova was born in Uzbekistan in 1991. She took her first piano lessons with Victoria Begalova at the age of five and studied at the V.A. Uspenskiy Music School from 1998 to 2005. In 2002, she won second prize at the International Piano Competition in Kazakhstan and the following year won first prize at the national piano competition in Uzbekistan. She was later invited to study at the Moscow State Conservatory P.I. Tchaikovsky.

Pianist – Darya Volkova

Florez and Florian Krumpök in Klassik am Dom and performed with Rannveig Braga and Martin Vacha. In 2019, Volkova performed as a pianist together with Tonkünstler Orchestra and conductor Brad Lubman at Summer Concerts in Grafenegg. She attended the Vienna International Orchestra Masterclass with conductor Konstantinos Diminakis and Orpheus Kammerorchester Wien and debuted as a soloist for Pihalni Orkester Zarja in Slovenia with Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

Volkova later studied under Christopher Hintertuber at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and made her debut in 2013 as a soloist in the Glass Hall of the Wiener Musikverein. She performed on the CD Fanny & Wilhelm Hensel – Scenes from a Marriage with her fellow students at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, released by Gramola in 2015.

In 2018 she took part in the project Musica Femina as a répétiteur, appeared with the Vienna Volksoper, Juan Diez 33
