為了培 養 未 來 的 藝 術 家 和 觀 眾，我 們 大 力投 資 下一 代 的 藝 術 教 育。「青 少 年之 友 」成 立 29 年 來，已 為 逾 782,0 0 0 位 本 地 中學 生 及 大專 生 提 供 藝 術 體 驗 活 動。會員可參加 由 國 際 及本 地 藝 術 家 主 持 的 示 範 講 座 及 工 作 坊、學 生 展 演、演 前 講 座、公 開 彩 排，以 及 欣 賞 藝 術 節 演 出 等。通 過 「學 生 票 捐助計 劃」，藝 術節每年 亦 提 供 約 10,000 張半價學 生 票。 香 港 藝 術 節 是 一 所 非 牟 利 機 構，其 主 要 收 入 除了 政 府 的 恆 常 資 助 及 票 房 外，極 大 一 部 分 來 自 各大 企 業、熱 心人 士 和 慈 善 基 金 會 的 贊 助 和 捐 款，以 及 政 府針 對 捐款和贊助收 入而提 供的配 對資助。

Sir Run Run Shaw, CBE, HKAF Honourary Life President (1907–2014) The Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts in February and March each year.

Since its launch in 1973, the HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres—from music, opera, and ballet to breakdance and experimental theatre. International guests have included major state operas, established theatres, top orchestras and stars of the day. We also frequently partner with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional new works.

We have also collaborated with Hong Kong’s own creative talent to produce work which is now part of the local canon, and to showcase emerging local artists. Over the years, the HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, opera, music and contemporary dance—many with successful subsequent performances in Hong Kong and overseas.

As part of our enduring commitment to enriching the cultural life of the city, we organise a diverse range of Festival PLUS activities for the community before and during the Festival to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include film screenings, masterclasses, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions and guided backstage and cultural tours.

Beyond the main Festival, the HKAF also promotes inclusivity and understanding through the arts. Its “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

To nurture the next generation of artists and audiences, the HKAF also invests heavily in year-round arts education for young people. Over the past 29 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 782,000 local secondary and tertiary school students; members can enjoy showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, Festival performances and in-school workshops led by international and local artists. Donations to the Student Ticket Scheme also make approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets available each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Its principal income sources are: recurrent funding from the government, box office revenues, and sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations, which form a significant portion of total income and also enable HKAF to receive support from the Government’s matching scheme that matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations.

今 天 的 捷 克 共 和 國 曾歷 經 變 遷。她 的 前 身 是 捷 克 斯 洛 伐 克 共 和 國，若 再 追本 溯 源，這 片土 地 包含 波 希 米 亞、摩 爾 維 亞 及西 利 西 亞等 部分，都 曾是 奧匈帝國的 領 土。 在十九世紀 末 至 二十世紀初更 迭 上演的工 業化進 程、政 局動盪 及民族 主 義 覺 醒，為 捷 克作曲家 提 供 改 弦 易轍 的 創 作土 壤，促使 他們 糅合豐 沛民 族 根基和敏 銳 都會觸覺，催生出一套嶄新的音樂語彙。「樂遊 捷地」系列 與 觀 眾回到 正值世 紀 之 交的 捷 克，一同探 索當地音樂 生 態，如 何 醞 釀出 這些情懷洋溢的高難度之作。

Before the formation of the Czech Republic, the Czech Lands were known simply as Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia—territories of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

For the native composers who witnessed the industrialisation, political upheavals and nationalist awakenings of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Czech lands became the site of a tenacious revolution in music, marked by a skilful merging of the region’s rich folk roots with a cosmopolitan music sensibility. In this series, journey “Into the Czech Lands” and discover the sites and seasons that produced some of the most emotionally rich and technically daring music of the turn of the century.

— Leoš Janáček (1854–1928) Few composers could be more emblematic of Brno than Leoš Janáček, who spent the majority of his career working in the city and drawing inspiration from its people. In this documentary, follow the footsteps of the composer through his busy life as an educator, music critic, researcher, and family man: from the abbey that provided his boyhood education to the homes where he loved and lost his children; from the vegetable market where he collected snippets of overheard conversation for his iconic “speech melody” to the National Theatre Brno, where he premiered his landmark opera Jenůfa in 1904.

This interactive online exhibition takes visitors through the Czech lands to meet four of its greatest composers: Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884), Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904), Leoš Janáček (18541928) and Bohuslav Martinů (1890-1959). With their enthusiasm for folk rhythms and melodies, these four men were largely responsible for a linguistic and cultural revival in Czech music, motivated by a persistent and passionate love of the land in the face of exile, war and colonisation. Through music excerpts, text and illustrations, follow their fascinating journeys to the musical landmarks in the continent.

Prior to their performance of The Diary of One Who Disappeared at the Janáček Festival in Brno, tenor Pavol Breslik and pianist Róbert Pechanec meet for a brief chat about their onstage chemistry, the challenging twists and turns of the piece, and their fondest memories of performing works by the composer.

The Diary of One Who Disappeared is a dramatic song cycle about a naïve farm boy’s illicit and overwhelming passion for a dark-haired gypsy. Full of quivering rhy thms, stark silences, innuendo and psychological depth, this haunting song cycle was in many ways uncharacteristic of the piano music of its time. Music educator Calvin Lai looks at the peculiarities of the libretto, as well as the late career successes inspired by Janáček’s hidden desire for his own unattainable heroine: Kamila Stösslová.

Martinů’s string quartets are some of the most representative of the genre in twentieth-century music. Sharon Choa, Dean of the HKAPA’s School of Music, delves into the two Czech composers’ intimate works for strings: Janáček’s String Quartet No 2, “Intimate Letters” (1928) and Martinů’s String Quartet No 5 (1938). Janáček’s work references the hundreds of letters he wrote to his ambivalent muse, Kamila Stösslová; while Martinů’s is dedicated to the young composer and conductor Vítězslava Kapralova—a former lover who abandoned the relationship for a younger man. Listen to the live music demonstration by APA students’ string quartets of selected movements of the two works and learn about how Janáček and Martinů assimilated a sense of intimacy and obsessional anxieties in their string quartets.

Named for one of the most gifted students of Janáček’s school of composition, the Pavel Haas Quartet is no stranger to works by the illustrious composer. In this short interview, the players explain how they approach interpreting Janáček’s exceptional two quartets. “They are so full of stories…They capture the whole of life in its complexity,” says the quartet cellist.

In 2010, Cantonese opera veteran Man Chin-sui wrote and starred with his wife Leung Siu-sum in an unconventional opera adaptation of a Biblical story: Noah’s Ark. Ten years later, Man’s disciple Lai Yiu-wai is re-staging Noah’s Ark with local talents, giving this Cantonese opera a revamped script and a fresh new look. In overhauling the show’s set and wardrobe designs, the creative team is referencing hand-painted gospel porcelain, a unique art form with close ties to Hong Kong.

This short Behind-the-scenes film follows the creative team on their mission to rebuild Noah’s Ark with a contemporary touch.

The histories of xiqu and porcelain are closely intertwined. Scenes from opera classics like Lady Zhaojun Goes Beyond the Great Wall and Romance of the Western Chamber have long found their way onto the surfaces of china plates and household wares. For this restaging of Noah’s Ark, the artistic team was inspired by the Chinese-style gospel porcelains produced at Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre in Sha Tin and created the sets and costumes of this production. The documentary short reveals the boundless possibilities of these two art forms.

The chamber opera Women Like Us is a singing tribute to Hong Kong’s literary grande dame Xi Xi and the two protagonists of her beloved short stories “A Girl Like Me” and “The Cold”.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Contemporary Dance Series 10th Anniversary Campaign 過去 十 年，平台 連 結 不同界別 的藝 術家發表 原 創 舞 蹈 作品。邁向第十屆，香 港 藝 術節將以 紀 念 特 刊、一 連 六 集的紀 錄 特輯及 網上 資料庫，與合作 過的藝 術家一同回顧 這 趟 舞 蹈歷 程。另設 網 上分 享會與本地編舞對談，分享當下表演藝術創作的新方向。

As The Hong Kong Jockey Club Contemporary Dance Series (CDS) celebrates its tenth anniversary in championing the production of original dance works with a line-up of topnotch artists across diverse disciplines, we are launching a six-episode documentary, a digital database, together with a commemorative booklet. Looking back on the past decade in a series of online sharing sessions, we invite local choreographers to tell us their innovative ideas about performing arts creativity in the contemporary world.

網上資料庫 Digital Database 從 第一屆（2012 年）至今，平台已 委 約及 製作八十 七個中小型 以 至長 篇新舞作。參與的 編 舞、舞 者及藝 術家 眾多，如 欲 了解 過往 的里 程碑 和 飽覽作品簡介及藝 術家資料，請 追 蹤二月下旬推出的「網上資料庫」。

Since the first edition in 2012, CDS has commissioned and produced 87 new works, ranging from small- to medium-scale productions and full-length performances, and involved more than hundreds of artists. The digital database archives the production information and artist profiles presented in the series in the past decade. Stay tuned for the official launch in late February.

Albert Camus’s post-war novel The Plague captured a society gripped by disease and grappling with the contradictions of widespread fear, death and uncertainty. What do Camus’s piercing insights into human behaviour in the face of crisis mean to today’s own plague-ridden world? In this webinar, Chan Tai-yin (Hong Kong) and Wang Chong (Beijing) reflect on their respective interpretations on Neil Bartlett’s adaptation of Camus’s classic existentialist text and consider how their own interpretations have been infected by contemporary realities.

Neil Bartlett’s 2017 theatre adaptation of The Plague stripped Camus’s story bare and reshaped it into the format of a public inquiry, in which each character submits his own witness statement for the evaluation of the audience. In this Artist Sharing, Chan Tai-yin, director of the Cantonese adaptation of the play and local cast members delve deep into the psychology and motives of their characters while reflecting on how their own experiences witnessing a real-life plague have informed their interpretations of the roles.

In 2019, Hong Kong Arts Festival collaborated with Crossing the Sea (Italy) to facilitate dance exchanges between artworks.

The integration of arts and technology is a global trend. In late 2019, the Hong Kong Arts Festival initiated the discussion with artists to explore the possibility of developing new art form, with the hope to innovate existing art forms, and render fresh opportunities.

Few would have doubted that Elena Shcherbakova, daughter of a hero pilot and a Bolshoi dancer, was destined for greatness.

“What makes artists good is mistakes, not perfection” — Jiří Kylián The 2018/2019 season brought two important moments in the life of choreographer Jiří Kylián. LEARN, EXPLORE, CREATE 香港藝 術節以「認識、發掘、創造」的藝 術 教育方針，每年 籌 辦多元化的藝 術 教 育 項目，透 過前 期 導賞、演出觀 賞 及後 期 反 思 活 動，培 養 學 生 對 藝 術 的 興 趣及鑑賞力。 在 這科 技高速發展 及社會時刻變化的時代，我們的藝術教育適時調整 及推陳 出新。2020/2021 年度 不同藝 術 教 育活 動 將雙 管 齊 下，以 實 體 及 網 上 雙 軌 形式 製作，醞 釀 及 創 造出更多形式 及機會，靈 活 地滿足不同學 校 及學 生 的需 要。同時，我們 亦 積極 探 討 跨 學 科及 跨界別藝 術 創 作，推 廣 藝 術 科 技 嶄 新概 念，開拓學生的藝術視野。

With its educational principle, “LEARN, EXPLORE, CREATE”, the HKAF offers a broad spectrum of arts education activities throughout the year, with an emphasis on providing pre-performance’s fundamental knowledge and post-performance’s extended learning, as well as the opportunity to attend performances, with the purpose of developing students’ interest in the performing arts.

HKAF periodically adjusts its arts education principles to account for new trends and new needs in the community. In 2020-2021, arts education activities are being offered in person and via online platforms, allowing such productions to develop in various forms, meeting the diverse needs of different schools and students. Meanwhile, we also actively explore interdisciplinary arts development, promoting the new concept of Arts Tech, expanding students’ imagination of the arts.
