Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far. This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds. Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts Festival In, Of and For Hong Kong

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. Synopsis

一次中學舊同學的飯局，讓幾位當年一同經

A dinner gathering for secondary schoolmates brings together several young people with shared experiences, both their DSE (Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education) studies and participation in a student activist movement. They have embarked on new stages of their lives, which vary from entering university, getting married, to starting a career. Meanwhile as they each face the future of Hong Kong, they attempt to respond to society in their own ways and from the different vantage points of their changing identities. Yin in particular continues to be involved in social activism; at university he meets Professor Poon, who becomes a mentor to him. From mutual admiration and comradeship, to conflict and estrangement, the pair’s changing relationship reflects the contrasting attitudes of two generations towards politics and institutions.

歷 DS E（香港中學文憑考試）及學生抗爭運動的年輕人重逢。他們彼此分享各自開展了的人生新階段，包括考進大學、結婚、投身社會等。而同時，他們亦嘗試以自己不同的方式、距離和身份回應社會、面對香港的未來。其中較激進的一賢，他選擇繼續參與社會運動，更在大學校園結識前輩潘教授。兩人由最初互相欣賞，並肩作戰，到最後因不和而決裂。一賢與潘教授之間關係的轉變，反映出兩代人對待政治和社會兩種截然不同的態度。

學問三部曲《論語》、《大學之烈火青春》、

The trilogy of learning – Chinese Lesson, The Great Learning, and Doctrine of Happiness – poses some poignant questions: How do young people relate to the times we live in? What is the goal of education? How do we tell the next generation about what is happening around us?

《中庸之幸福學堂》，探討年青人和現今時代的關係，教育追求的是什麼？我們怎樣告訴下一代現今身邊發生的事情？編寫《大學之烈火青春》時，翻看又翻看香港的時事和新聞，仍然看不懂、看不明、看不透，眼見年青人在燃燒自己的生命，本想照亮別人，可惜最後反被火燒。社會上很多衛道之士痛恨火種，時常衝着撲火。要知道五行中的金木水火土，相生相剋，依賴共存。望社會少一點失衡，野火燒不盡，青春催又生……

While I was writing The Great Learning, I re-read a lot of coverage of Hong Kong current affairs. And yet I could not discern, comprehend, or grasp how the youths, who had hoped to bring light to others’ lives by setting their own alight, were finally engulfed in flames. There are many moralists in society who detest this fire; they are always scrambling to put out the flame. Yet one must understand that in Wu Xing, the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth co-exist by both nurturing and inhibiting one another. I hope there will be less imbalance in our society, and that young people will always be able to bring what is extinguished back to life…

From Scratch to Script

真實，是我們在這次創作上所追求的核心。於是

Authenticity is what we have strived for in creating this work. To this end, we sought to gain deeper insights into the mindsets of people from different fields through various interviews, so as to enrich the characters in the play with real life features. Our interviewees included university students, university teaching staff, frontline police officers, reporters and (former) social activists. We touched on how, after experiencing a major social movement in Hong Kong, these people adapted to the living environment and re-examined their own identities, as well as their views and hopes for the future development of society. This gave us a more multi-dimensional and thorough understanding of the whole picture.

我們透過多次訪問，去了解更多不同界別人士的思維方式，讓劇中的角色描寫得更有血有肉。我們訪問的對象包括大學生、大學教授、前線警察、記者、（前）社運人士，他們在香港經歷了一場重大的社會運動後，對生活環境的應變，對自己身分的重新審視，對社會未來發展的看法和期望等等，都令我們對整個局面有更立體和全面的領會。無力，是他們異口同聲的嘆息。面對社會急劇的撕裂，自問適應力再強的香港人也變得手足無措。有的選擇逃避，有的選擇妥協，有的選擇沉默，有的選擇他日捲土重來；他們都深信時間會將熱情和憤怒沖淡，然而卻不會否認，在記憶深處，那道永不磨滅的傷痕。在訪問的過程中，我們彷彿找到這次創作的最大意義，就是為這群見證時代的人，延續他們所放棄的另一條路途。雖然現實與理想之間存在着偏差，但仍希望他們能活得心安理得，在煙火璀璨之下毋忘曾經擁有過的青春烈火。文：許晉邦文本資料搜集 / 導演助理

All the interviewees expressed the same sense of helplessness. In the face of sudden social rupture, even Hong Kong people who pride themselves on their adaptability were at a loss what to do. Some chose to escape reality; some chose to compromise; some chose to stay silent; some chose to wait for the time to make a comeback. All of them believed passion and anger would fade in time, and yet they never denied that the wounds in their memories would always remain. In conducting the interviews, we seemed to have discovered the most profound meaning of our artistic creation, which was to extend the eventualities that events could have led to, but did not. There are always gaps between ideals and reality, and yet we hope these people shall live their days with peace of mind and, amidst the sparks of the present, never forget the flames of youth they once lived. In 2016, HKAF commissioned the production of Chinese Lesson, a play about a group of secondary school students studying the Chinese language. The drama revolved around how these youths dealt with social conflicts, their lives and studies, and the unknown future. While the Chinese title of the play was borrowed from The Analects, the name was far more than a marketing gimmick. The creative impetus behind Chinese Lesson was an inquiry into how young Hong Kong people relate to Chinese culture, and how they relate to the many thousand year old cultural traditions of China.

習中國語文的年青人戲劇《論語》，圍繞青少年面對社會矛盾，面對人生、學業，面對未知的將來大造文章，當年取名《論語》，並非只是宣傳上的考慮。事實上，看青少年如何面對中國文化，如何想像中國幾千年的文化傳統，是《論語》背後的動機。這齣由幾個年青演員挑大樑的戲，被英文《南華早報》挑選為 2016 年最佳戲劇之一，因為它以真誠的態度，寫出青少年的所思所想、所作所為。 2 018 年的香港藝術節，一口氣推出可說是《論語》續篇的《大學之烈火青春》與《中庸之幸福學堂》，繼續與導演兼編劇的鄧智堅合作，延續《論語》中各位主角的青春求學歲月，以至踏入社會生兒育女為未來下一代打拚的故事。類似連續劇的設計，但又能獨立成篇的劇本及舞台創作，也算是本地戲劇的新嘗試。《論語》、《大學》、《中庸》是儒學經典，講的是完善人格、立身處世的君子之學，本來不是戲劇所能表達的思想，這三齣戲借題發揮，以戲劇來想像這一代香港年青人的成長經歷，並對應這個時代的特殊社會及政治現實，剖視他們在這兩極分化的現實與未來當中，怎樣活出他們的青春。文：蘇國雲香港藝術節副節目總監

Featuring a young cast in the lead roles, the play was selected by the South China Morning Post as one of 2016’s best productions for its authentic portrayal of the thoughts and actions of young people. In 2018, the Festival once again teams up with director and playwright Tang Chi-kin to present The Great Learning and Doctrine of Happiness, which can be regarded as sequels to Chinese Lesson. The two plays expand on the stories of the Chinese Lesson protagonists, tracing their lives through college, early careers, parenthood and their striving for the future of the next generation. These plays are akin to a dramaseries, but at the same time are stand-alone new works that represent a new local theatrical experiment. The Confucian classics The Analects, The Great Learning and Doctrine of the Mean are teachings in gentlemanly conduct, touching on the perfecting of one’s personality and in ways of conducting oneself. Despite their titles, the three plays can in no way express the messages conveyed in the original texts, but relate instead to current society and political reality through these volumes, envisaging a coming of age for this generation of Hong Kong’s youth and illustrating their attitude in the face of a polarised reality and future. Tang Chi-kin

Tang Chi-kin is an actor, playwright, director and drama tutor, currently active in both TV and film. His recent television work includes TVB’s Hong Kong Gag Gag, Line Walker: The Prelude, Easy Come Easy Health; Fox’s Stained; ViuTV’s Midnight Cousin and RTHK’s Artspiration. His movie work includes La Comédie humaine, Never Too Late and A Beautiful Moment. Tang graduated from HKAPA where he won accolades such as the Outstanding Student Award and Outstanding Actor Award during his studies. He was also awarded the prize of Outstanding Young Actor by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies and was nominated for the Best Actor Award and Best Play Award by the Hong Kong Theatre Libre. Notable work includes MicroSex Office, MeChat, Stones in His Pockets, and True Man Show in Showroom. His current work includes HIHI Boom, Breed Away Sorrow, A Midsummer Night’s Dream 2.0 (musical), Ravages Stage (adapted from The Ravages of Time), Planet of the Lang Mo, Waiting For the Match, Black Monday, The Story After Ah Q (in Putonghua), Macbeth, On Golden Pond, and Phaedra. He has participated in more than 70 theatre works, including popular children’s drama. His directing and playwright credits include the 2016 Hong Kong Arts Festival’s Chinese Lesson, HIHI Boom, MeChat, Un-Woman, The Legend of Hua Tuo and more. His playwright works True Man Show in Showroom and Travelling on Sun-Monday were invited for performances at The University of Melbourne for two consecutive years, while True Man Show in Showroom has been nominated the Hong Kong Theatre Libre’s Best Play Award and is included in the book The City in Ten Years. Tang’s overseas performances include his own written and directed one-man show MeChat (Vancouver), Tang Shu Wing Theatre Studio's Macbeth at Shakespeare’s Globe (London), Titus Andronicus (London, Berlin, Neuss). He has also participated in performances around the globe including at Taipei Arts Festival, Kuandu Arts Festival, Kobe Drama Festival and Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts.

Ben Yuen

Professor Poon

Ben Yuen is a veteran stage practitioner who works as a freelance actor/director and a parttime lecturer at HKAPA (Department of Film). Yuen graduated from the HKAPA School of Drama with an MA in Directing in 2011. His graduation work Recycling Times was commissioned by the 39th Hong Kong Arts Festival. He has participated in over 100 productions which include Freshly Frozen School, Les Misérables, Alive in the Mortuary, Tonnochy, La Fille Mal Gardeé, Sound in the Evolution, Macbeth, An Unjust Good Fellow, Breed Away Sorrow and more. His directing work includes Drama Alliance’s The House of 72 Tenants; Cinematic Theatre’s The Reminiscences; Chung Ying Theatre Company’s Searching for Papa, Angel Aurora, Master Q and more. He won the Best Actor Award at the 1st Chinese Short Film Media Awards with Leaving to Stay. His recent work includes Shock Wave, Trivisa, Ten Years, Overheard 3; RTHK’s Below the Lion Rock Series, ICAC Investigators – Blind and ViuTv’s Next Exit. He was both a director and actor in one of RTHK’s TV Programme Commissioning programmes.

張惠雅

前跳唱女子組合成員，現為自由身演員。曾參與多套電視劇集，包括《貓屎媽媽》、《潮拜武當》、《末代御醫》等；又參與多個綜藝節目，包括《最緊要好玩》、《玩轉香港日與夜》、《歡樂滿東華》（2016 及 2017 年）等；並曾擔任《我愛香港》主持。除了電視外，亦活躍於電影拍攝工作，包括《絕代雙嬌》、《親愛的》、《家有囍事 2009》等。2014 年首次擔綱主演兒童音樂劇《長腿叔叔》，獲一致好評。 2016 年參演舞台劇《進擊的小飛》。

Regen Cheung was a member of a girl-pop group and is now a freelance actress. Her recent work includes television programmes Coffee Cat Mama, Wudang Rules, The Last Healer in Forbidden City; variety shows Hong Kong Gag Gag, Hong Kong Round the Clock, Tung Wah Charity Show (2016 and 2017), I Love Hong Kong. Her movie work includes Nobody’s Perfect, Dearest, All’s Well, Ends Well 2009 and more. In 2014 she starred in the children’s musical Daddy Long Legs, earning wide acclaim. In 2016 she took part in The Adventures of Siu2Fei1.

Luke Lai graduated from the HKAPA School of Drama, majoring in Acting. His recent performances include HKAPA’s Descendants of the Eunuch Admiral (2015), Theatre du Pif’s performance-based training and research programme The Actors Lab (2015), the 44th Hong Kong Arts Festival’s Chinese Lesson (2016), the 2016 International Black Box Festival’s Descendants of the Eunuch Admiral (2016) and more.

Law Ka-yan

A graduate of Whole Theatre’s one-year Drama Certificate Programme, Law Ka-yan is a freelance art practitioner, drama teacher and now an art development coordinator (administration) at Radix Troupe. She has performed in Whole Theatre’s Haunted Haunted Little Star (premiere and re-run), Cabaret 2014, Gap Life (premiere and re-run), and A Spot of Murder, while taking up different backstage duties including props and costumes and assisting in stage management. She also participated in the 2016 Hong Kong Arts Festival’s Chinese Lesson, the 2017 Community Cultural Ambassador’s Traditional Culture Journey: Successful Future of Our Children and Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s Beyond the Corner. She has also worked as the tour producer at Smiley Planet X Standard Chartered Hong Kong 150th Anniversary Community Foundation’s Go Cup and was executive producer for Radix Troupe’s An Accidental Rainbow.

溫子樑

肥腸

畢業於香港演藝學院戲劇學院，獲頒藝術學士（榮譽）學位，主修表演。近期演出包括：普劇場《貝貝的文字冒險》2 0 1 7 弦樂篇、唯獨舞台《快樂王子》音樂劇 2017 復活版、糊塗戲班《螢火蟲》、Thursday Cafe《大暑》、香港藝術節《論語》等。亦參與不同劇團所製作的社區及學校巡迴演出。在校期間，曾演出《青鳥》、《貓城夏秋冬》、《天邊外》、《看不見的城市》等，並憑《看不見的城市》獲頒傑出演員獎。溫氏現為自由身舞台工作者，戲劇導師，也積極參與戲劇教育、司儀、電影拍攝等工作。溫氏亦熱愛踢躂舞及音樂創作，正探索兩者之間的可能性。 © Pazu @ 萬象鏡社

Wan Tsz-leung Fatso Wan Tsz-leung graduated from the HKAPA School of Drama with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (honours) in Acting. His recent performances include: POP Theatre’s The Writing Adventure of Bui Bui, The Musical, The Only Stage’s The Happy Prince – The Musical 2017, The Nonsensemakers’ The Rainbow Troops, Hong Kong Arts Festival’s Chinese Lesson and more. His school performances have included The Blue Bird, My Days In Cat Town, Beyond The Horizon, and Invisible Cities, for which he won an Outstanding Actor Award. Wan is now a freelance stage practitioner and drama tutor who takes an active role in arts education, MC and film work. He is also passionate about tap dance and music compositions.

Wong Ching-man Momoko Wong Ching-man graduated from the HKAPA School of Drama with a Bachelors Degree in Acting and has received several scholarships during her studies. She is currently pursuing a Master of Expressive Arts Therapy at the University of Hong Kong, aiming to heal souls through the arts. Wong has collaborated with various arts companies such as the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, Chung Ying Theatre Company, Theatre Noir and more. Her performance as Momoko in Hong Kong Arts Festival’s Chinese Lesson was greatly acclaimed by the South China Morning Post. She has also actively taken part in television, movie and advertisement shoots, including RTHK’s A Beautiful Mind (TV); an OLAY advertisement, and Sara, Shock Wave and 29+1 (film); her performance as Tomato in 29+1 in particular won widespread praise. She is also a singer, MC, voice actress and arts educator.

Lo Ka-nang

He took a musical course at the HKAPA Extension and Continuing Education for Life (APA Excel) school for two years before his studies at HKAPA, and has obtained a BTEC Level 5 HNCD in Performing Arts. Jan Wong graduated from the HKAPA School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts in 2011, majoring in Theatre and Costume Design. Octavian Chan

Lighting Designer

Octavian Chan graduated from CUHK majoring in Physics and the HKAPA School of Drama majoring in Directing with first class honours. In 2009 he was awarded the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards for Best Young Artist (Drama). His collaborative directing and scriptwriting work in Three Men and a Lady brought him the Best Script nomination at the third Hong Kong Theatre Libre. He was also nominated as Best Director and for Best Stage Effects at the 5th Hong Kong Theatre Libre with So Long, Farewell! HK. and Sand, You and Me. His lighting design work includes Radix Troupe’s An Accidental Rainbow; the 2016 Hong Kong Arts Festival’s Chinese Lesson; The Whole Theatre’s Gap Life (premiere and re-run); the 2014 New Vision Arts Festival’s Kafka Fragments and The New Rendezvous with Nalan (Alice Theatre Laboratory); Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s Monsters and more. He is a founding member of MetroHoliK Studio and is now a freelance director and lighting designer.

黎智勇

音樂及音響設計

畢業於香港演藝學院，主修音響設計及音樂錄音。在學期間曾兩度獲頒成龍獎學基金，畢業後曾於香港電台擔任錄音師，現為香港作曲家及作詞家協會會員。黎氏憑中英劇團《復仇者傳聞之驚天諜變反擊戰》一劇獲香港戲劇協會頒發第 25 屆香港舞台劇獎最佳音響設計及提名最佳配樂。2 0 1 0 年曾為香港電台 7 . 1 聲道廣播劇《毒戒》作音響設計及混音，獲紐約節頒發工藝及技術——最佳剪輯獎。並於 2 0 1 7 及 2 0 1 8 年擔任香港藝術節的音響系統工程師。黎氏早於 2005 年成立 Marsical Label 公司從事音樂、音響及錄像等製作，並於香港演藝學院任兼職導師。

Martin Lai

Music and Sound Designer

Martin Lai graduated from HKAPA majoring in Sound Design and Music Recording and received the Jackie Chan Scholarship twice during his studies. After graduation he became a sound engineer at RTHK and is now a member of Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong. He was awarded the Best Sound Design award and nominated for Best Soundtrack at the 25th Hong Kong Drama Awards by Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies for Chung Ying Theatre Company’s The Revenge of Local Heroes. In 2010 his sound design and mixing for a RTHK channel 7.1 radio drama won the Craft and Technology – Best Editing award at New York Festivals. He also served as sound system engineer at Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2017. In 2005 he founded Marsical Label which provides music, sound and video production services and is now a part-time tutor in HKAPA.

甄泳然

服裝設計

香港演藝學院藝術學士畢業生，主修服裝技術。近期參與製作團隊包括：香港話劇團、演戲家族、香港歌劇院、香港舞蹈團、Metro-HoliK Studio、BHT Theatre、R&T、I-Stage、K.O. the box、Actor’s Square、心靈客棧等。近期擔任服裝設計之演出有《借種消愁》、《聖誕老人玩轉聖誕假》、《踏．尋．船》等。活躍於舞台服裝管理、設計及製作等範疇。現為自由身舞台工作者。

Renee Yan

Renee Yan is a HKAPA graduate with a major in Costume Technology. She has recently worked with Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, Actor’s Family, Opera Hong Kong, Hong Kong Dance Company, Metro-HoliK Studio, BHT Theatre, R&T, I-Stage, K.O. the box, Actor’s Square, Take It Easy Theatre and more. Her recent costume design appeared in Breed Away Sorrow, Undestined Sail and other productions. She is active in stage costume management and design. Yan is now a freelance stage practitioner.
