T

his area is an exciting place to be for rock musicians and rock music lovers alike, and is currently producing a healthy crop of talented bands and musicians.

Aptly named singer/songwriter Martin Livingstone, from Livingston, took time out of rehearsals with his own band, ‘The Changes’, to talk with me about his music, and the burgeoning local music scene.

“I never really set out to become a singer/songwriter,” he tells me, “I didn’t believe in myself enough to set my hopes that high.”

Yet this year alone, Martin has already recorded two albums, ‘Living on an Island’ and ‘Contentment’, and is currently in rehearsal with ‘The Changes’, for forthcoming gigs in various prominent venues, including Whistlebinkies, Bannermans, Pivo Pivo and Ivory Black.

As a child, Martin’s musical education began and ended with what he heard played at home. Even then, however, he was aware of the power and spiritual resonance of music.

“I remember listening to John Lennon, and the Beach Boys. Some of the Beach Boys’ harmonies were really beautiful. At the time, I thought it was church music,” he remembers with a smile.

Along with many of his secondary school cohorts, Martin was swept along by the excitement of the musical scene during his teenage years. He and his friends immersed themselves in music during the long hot summers. (Yes, there have been some in previous years!)

“It was part of our teenage rebellion. We hung around in the streets together. We knew all the words to all the songs. We dressed the same. It was pure escapism, and lots of fun. But it was also a really important time in my life. I was deeply inspired by it all, and I realised that everyone needs music of some kind or another. Music still remains immensely important to me.

It drives me. It keeps the blues away. I really can’t imagine a world without it.”

Pain sometimes produces creativity. For Martin, a difficult period in his life was the catalyst that helped develop his skills and passion for song writing.

“To understand what was going on inside my head, I was keeping a diary of emotions.

I recorded everything and filled countless books. I got a lot of things off my chest and gradually, over time, my writing developed into deep poetry.”

There the story might have ended, had Martin not bumped into Jim McFarlane.

“I had no idea how important my friend Jim would be to the direction of my life. He suggested I put some of my poetry to music. I initially laughed at the idea but he managed to persuade me to sing one of my poems in his recording studio. It was nerve racking, but as I finished the song, he said, “There, I knew you could do it.” It was like a light being switched on. It was magical. Jim helped me to believe in myself.”

“I’d had no musical training, but I was keen to learn. So when I was given a guitar, I practised for two hours every night,

teaching myself to play my favourite songs. Everything I know about chord progression I learned from other people’s songs.”

During the years that followed, Martin developed his skills and grew in confidence. He performed solo and with his band ‘Burnout’, and has written hundreds of songs.

“One half of me loves to write exuberant rock and roll songs. I enjoy the celebration, the excitement, and the sheer joy of rock and roll. The other half of me is drawn to a quieter acoustic sound. I write about things that shake me up inside, things I notice which affect me deeply.”

Performing and writing is only one aspect of the music business. Another important element is promoting the work, and building up a strong reputation.

“The business aspect is a challenge. But you have to take it head on. I have met with so many brick walls along the way. But I’ve also had some real gifts too. Ian Wainwright appeared just when I needed him, offering to help promote my work.

That was amazing. It was such an encouragement, and helped to take a huge weight off my shoulders.”

Currently, Martin is working with fellow musicians Andrew Harrington, John McCauley and Stewart McKeen, rehearsing new material for ‘The Changes’.

“We’re developing a new sound that really excites me, and I’m loving working with the band. Andrew, John and Stewart are supertalented and they have a great attitude.

We work hard, we’re committed and we’re excited about our forthcoming gigs.”

Martin is equally enthusiastic about the many other bands and musicians who contribute to the local music scene.

“There are so many great bands to discover: The Begbies, Japan 4, the High Rollers, Ed Lee, The Dead Sea Souls, James McKay, Capstan Pole, The Barrels, Jesus Trip, The Alpha Box, Eldrick Scanty, The Gateway, Red Light District and my own younger brother, Daniel Livingstone. Some of them have been around for a while, and some are new, but all of them are very talented and hard working. They’re all good – check them out!”

I ask Martin what he does when he’s not writing or singing.

“I keep fit. I run. I hill walk.

I love being out in the hills.

Wild walking clears my head and helps me create space to think. You could even say it has mystical significance for me.”

Writing from the heart can be a lonely business.

Martin has really appreciated support and encouragement of family and friends along the way, and is especially grateful for Ian Wainwright and Jim’s input.

“I express myself best through music,” he tells me, as our interview draws to a close,“ My songs probably give a clearer picture of who I am than I could ever tell you myself.”

Focus on Progress not Perfection

T

o aim for perfection is to set yourself up for failure or complete burn out from the constant trying to create an image that never quite gets there!

The truth is, perfection doesn’t exist, and constantly striving for it demonstrates a lack of self-acceptance, especially when you’ve done your best but you feel it still isn’t quite enough.

Perfectionism demands you do more in the hope that you’ll be more! Why? Because under it all you don’t think you’re interesting enough, smart enough, organized enough….basically not good enough! This sort of thinking breeds selfdoubt and chips away at your confidence and peace of mind.

Progress on the other hand is recognition of the process of life. It has an acceptance to it, an allowance that permits life to unfold in a correct divine order. This allowance occurs when you know that you’ve done your very best for the day and you are able to let go and trust that all will be well.

Recognise you can never do any more than your best. We should aim to be the finest possible version of who we can be but with the attitude of progress rather than perfection.

Vet’s Tip:

Train your dog to do anything!

A

rm yourself with a handful of tasty treats like little cubes of chicken or cheese. With one piece of food between your fingertips slowly lure your dog to follow the food into whichever position you desire. As soon as they move into this position reward them with the food and give enthusiastic praise. Repeat this six times. Then try doing the same movement but without the treat. If this works give a jackpot reward of five treats. Repeat this six times. If your dog won’t be lured without the treat try doing another three to five food lures before attempting the non-food lure.

Once they are reliably moving into position with just a hand movement you can start to add your cue just as they perform the behaviour. Keep rewarding every correct behaviour

and don’t get frustrated if they seem to suddenly forget. Begin to say the cue word before luring them. After a couple of 2-5 minute sessions begin to say the cue word but don’t lure them, simply wait for them to work it out and jackpot reward them the first few times they do it to only a cue word.

Keep practicing the exercise in various locations and always reward every time until they are 100% reliable in all areas even with distractions around.

You can then start to give random rewards and also use praise, cuddles, play and anything they else they like as a reward.

Around the Loch we go

A

s you can not have failed to notice, the summer has been a wash out - not great for walking or doing much of anything outdoors really, but that means one has to take one’s opportunities when one can. So on a very rare day - rare that is because I happened to have a few hours off and it wasn’t raining!! - I thought where can I walk that the kids will enjoy and it’s not too far away but far enough to be a trip?

Answer - Linlithgow Loch. I am all for combining activities and killing two birds with the one stone, so not only could we walk, we could utilise our Historic Scotland membership by taking in the Palace too.

So choose your route to Linlithgow - M9 to Junction 3 or back road via Dechmont - I plumbed for the latter as it is much prettier! Once in Linlithgow, park in the car park by the Palace or if you are visiting the Palace, you can park right outside.

We decided on walk first, Palace visit second - bribery works best with my urchins! So from the Palace entrance, go around the left side of the building and walk down to the edge of the loch. Turn left and follow the path around the loch in a clockwise direction.

The area surrounding the loch is known as Linlithgow Peel and comprises land which used to be the garden and grounds of the Palace of Linlithgow which has been added to over the years and is now maintained by Historic Scotland.

Between April and August this section of path often has a number of nesting swans at the waterside so you are advised not to go too close or antagonise them as they can be aggressively protective of their young. The loch is home to a large number of water birds including the rare Great Crested Grebe.

When you come to a road beyond the east end of the loch, turn right and go through a kissing gate. We love these and everyone is made to kiss everyone to great shouts of derision and ‘do we have to?’

You then cross some sheep grazing land to another road which you will go along for around 100m, before turning right down an alleyway by a house to come back to the Palace grounds and a children’s play area. You will also pass the jetty for the sailing dinghies that can often be seen out on the water along with wind surfers and swans.

The circuit is probably around 2 miles, taking around an hour - depending on stops for throwing stones in the loch, discussing swans and some dawdling - so not too long but long enough to deserve a visit to the Palace.

There is a bridge at the far end (west end) of the loch - head over the bridge and veer right. Once on the other side of the loch you will get some great views of the Palace.

The palace is actually in view for most of the walk. A large square sandstone shell, it was built by James I in 1424 following the ruin of the previous building by a fire. It became a popular palace for the Stewart family linking the route between Edinburgh and Stirling castles, and served as the nursery for Mary Queen of Scots.

The palace fell into decline after 1603 when James VI moved the royal court to London, and in 1745 fire swept through the building leaving the ruin seen today.

The next event is Family Bat Night on 1 September, 8-10pm. You will hear a short talk with some batty facts, followed by an easy walk to look and listen for bats in and around Linlithgow Palace. Researching Your Family Tree: Before 1855 and Statutory Registration

O

ne of the more frustrating things about researching your family tree is the date 1855. This was the year that compulsory birth, marriage and death registration was introduced. Any changes to your family tree before this date are more difficult to find, and in some cases there will be no surviving records.

All is not lost, however. Some death records contained in the Old Parish Records have survived, and many of us have been able to add a date of death to our records, but these death entries are even patchier than those for the baptism and marriage records. Some may only be a record of a name and the charge made for the hire of the Mort Cloth or the hire of a bell. In some areas of Scotland it was left to the grave diggers to keep records of who was buried in the cemetery, but many of these have been lost over the years.

Looking at the Old Parish Records in Kirknewton and East Calder the following deaths are recorded.

1642 – 1739 These records tell us that money was given for the use of the mort cloth.

and by local family history groups.

They will record all inscriptions on the stones in a graveyard and will supply a map of the graveyard showing you where the stone is located. Some of the transcribing of the stones is even more invaluable as stones and inscriptions deteriorate over the years and much of this information may soon been lost forever.

I have been doing some research for a friend who was looking for his ancestors in Wick. I had traced the family back to the late 1700’s, and was looking for any deaths recorded for the family Bremner.

There was nothing in the Old Parish Records, so I looked up the name in the Monumental Inscriptions for the Old Cemetery in Wick and found out when my friend’s great, great grandfather Donald and his wife had died and that there was a son George who I had not encountered before. There was also a detailed map showing me exactly where the stone was located and I plan to visit the cemetery soon to take a photograph of the stone for my friend.

1708 – 1747 These records are simply a list of names and where they were from.

1829 – 1854 These records are very thorough with date of death, date of burial, name, designation, age, whether married, cause of death and place of burial being recorded.

September Recipes

T

his is a very strange September.

Often by this time of the year, we are coping with gluts of fruit or courgettes, and trying to think of new ways of cooking other produce. This year we will be lucky to have any harvest from which to make jams or chutneys or to bottle or freeze plums, currants, blackberries or even apples.

September is usually the month for harvest festivals. There are many traditions associated with harvest especially the decoration of churches and the sharing of food amongst the housebound or needy. One of the most attractive is the making of beautiful but complicated harvest breads. Different areas have their own patterns, but the basic form is taken from the shape of an old sheaf of wheat. These loaves were sometimes painted, or even decorated with gold leaf.

I am not going to give instructions for baking a harvest loaf, but you might like to try making household bread to share with the family.

There is no need to be worried about baking bread. It is easy and very forgiving. There are few rules but you must use the best flour you can, and then knead it fully. If these guides are followed, the bread will be delicious. If you have a bread machine lurking at the back of the cupboard, find it, dust it down and plug it in!

My Bread (makes two loaves) You can use any combination of flours you like. Sometimes I include

some rye flour, spelt or malted flour or even mixed seed flour. I always use 1 kilo in total.

500 gm of strong plain white flour (high protein) 500 gm of strong wholemeal flour Pudding spoonful of salt 3 tablespoons oil;- olive, sunflower, nut or canola oils are all good; so too is butter.

1pint of warm water 25gm of fresh yeast or 3 flat teaspoons dry yeast

Method Put the yeast in a mug or jug with a little warm (blood temperature) water. Set it aside until it has worked itself to a froth. You can give it a few grains of sugar to encourage it, but you do not have to.

Put all the rest of the dry ingredients in a large bowl. When the yeast is really active, add it and some water to the bowl and start mixing. Use a hand mixer on full power or a Kenwood type on slow. See how dry the mix is and add more water, mixing till you have a stiff dough which comes away from the sides of

the bowl. Then give it 3-5 minutes more mixing until it is elastic and can be pulled, showing strings.

This indicates that the kneading is working the gluten and the bread will have a good texture.

Leave in the bowl in a warm place to double in size. The time defends on the warmth of the room. You may expect to wait three quarters of an hour, or more. The time now is NOT critical.

Heat the oven to 400oF, 200oC or gas 5 or6.

Punch the dough down and turn it on to a floured work-surface. Cut the dough in two and knead each part to make a nice shape or until it will fit into your chosen bread tin.

Leave to double in size. This time you need to watch things because if the bread over-rises you will have to knock it back and wait again. Overrisen dough makes a loaf with a poor structure which will be crumbly when you try to slice it.

Bake in the hot oven for 30 minutes.

As you take it from the oven, listen….it should be silent. If it is still hissing, give it 5 minutes more.

Leave to cool, this will be difficult, and do not slice till cold. Making 2 loaves saves fuel, eat one and keep the other, either in the fridge or the freezer. If freezing, think about slicing it before you freeze it then you can always have a fresh slice to toast!

You can use these proportions in your bread machine, or use a kit, or follow the machine instructions.

Bread and Butter Pickle I got this recipe years ago, by writing to the person named on the label of pickle I had bought from the WRVS stall in Oxford market. She was very kind, but said she was not meant to give the information, but, since I lived so far away she thought she would not get into trouble!

1 kilo of marrow or courgettes, cut into bite size bits 3 or 4 tablespoons of salt 1 ½ pints of wine vinegar 500gm of sliced onions 15gm of dry mustard or mustard seed 200gm of granulated sugar 15gm of turmeric 6 dried chillies Method Put the marrow in a large bowl with the salt, leave twelve hours, or overnight. Drain, and throw away the liquid.

Mix the powdered spices to a paste, with a little of the vinegar.

Put all the rest of the ingredients in a pan and bring slowly to the boil. Add the paste of spices and continue to simmer slowly for nearly two hours. Stir every now and then to avoid lumps or burning on the bottom of the pan. It is ready when it looks like chutney.

Put into clean, warm jam jars and seal. This is ready to eat but will be good for up to 6 months if kept in a cool place.

om McKellar has been President of East Calder & Wilkieston Children’s Gala for the past eleven years and has just announced his retirement from this post after an amazing fifty years as a committee member. We could not let this pass without recognising his dedication and commitment to the Gala over the years.

We at the Children’s Gala know Tom as “The voice of the Gala” with his booming call to the children on the Gala field to get down to their starters. He has not missed a Gala Day in fifty years, and has told us that if he is fit and able, we will still see him and hear him on Gala Day 2013.

In 1962 the Gala was just a one-day event.
