Limefield:

The House, the Falls, the History

J

ust off the A71 through Polbeth there is a bucolic nook which seems worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the main road. In the grounds of the Limefield estate you travel back over a century to the time when this was the residence of one of Britain’s most wealthy entrepreneurs.

Now a private residence, Limefield House was built in 1805, and would be “just another mansion” had it not been acquired in 1855 by James Young, the man responsible for the development of the shale oil industry in West Lothian.

James Young 1811 - 1883 He founded the world’s oil economy, became a billionaire - and saved the whales!

James Young was the founding father of the West Lothian shale oil industry, moving to Polbeth in 1855 as his fortune rapidly mounted. Young applied his skills as a chemist to oil seeping into coalmines and invented a process we now call ‘refining’ to produce paraffin wax, naphtha, and various other oils.

Natural oil seeps were rare, so Young located his works in Bathgate where there were ample supplies of shale.

Eventually he made a fine, light product from shale, and named it paraffin oil.

He revealed his process in a patent, which required other companies to pay him royalties. At the time the only oils available for use in houses, aboard ships etc were derived from whales, plants or animals – dim, smoky and smelly!

In 1851 the Bathgate operation was the world’s first oil refinery, and he subsequently expanded to bigger works in Addiewell, opened by Young’s famous friend David Livingstone. His paraffin is the same as modern heating oil and jet engine fuel, and cheap paraffin was the deathknell of the whaling industry. He earned the nickname James “paraffin” Young selling first paraffin, then branching out into many products including fertilisers.

With Young’s empire expanding, he was already very wealthy when he purchased Limefield, and he undertook a major refurbishment of the property. Some of the original Georgian features were replaced with what seems to our modern tastes as ostentatious Victorian style. During his time there he also had gas lighting and electricity installed throughout. I spoke to the current owner of Limefield House, Ian Sibbald, who told me that the staircase with the ornate Victorian bannisters that James Young chose are still there. The grounds around the house, he says, bear all the marks of an extremely wealthy owner.

Young was a close friend of David Livingstone, the missionary and explorer, whom he met when they were both students at Anderson College (now Strathclyde Uni) in the early 1830s.

Livingstone was the first Westerner to see the Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke Which Thunders) waterfall on the Zambezi River in 1853, renaming it Victoria Falls.

Livingstone visited Limefield frequently on his trips home from Africa, as Young was a major financial sponsor. In 1864 he planted a sycamore tree in front of the house. It has been well looked after and is still there - grafts were taken from it in the 1970s and planted around Livingston, so when its life has eventually run its course, the seeds of Livingstone’s tree will live on. He also built some small African huts for the amusement of Young’s children, although nothing remains of them today. When Livingstone went missing in Africa in 1871 Young is believed to have helped fund the successful mission to find him. And in 1873 he

Alice Tom donated it to the community. It was used by the council as a care home for many years and West Calder High School was built in the deer park of the estate. But when a replacement care home was built at Dedridge, Limefield House fell into disrepair. Empty and derelict for a decade, it was sold into private ownership in a very poor state of repair. The proceeds were used for various facilities in Polbeth and West Calder and the house was restored to its former glory as a private residence.

Deeply affected by his friend’s death, Young arranged for Livingstone’s two African manservants, Susi and Chuma, to accompany the body home, and local historians believe that they were brought to Limefield House so that Young could personally thank them. As a tribute to Livingstone, Young had a miniature of Victoria Falls constructed on Harwood Water, the stream that runs through the estate. One can imagine Livingstone, on a visit to Limefield, trying to convey the magnificence of the Falls to his friend.

In any case, the Falls meant a great deal to him and he succeeded in impressing Young, who built Limefield Falls based on Livingstone’s descriptions. It seems likely that Susi and Chuma helped in the construction. They also built a hut made of straw and wood, said to be identical to the one in which Livingstone died. Limefield Falls are still quite impressive today, albeit lower than their original height as they were lowered by the council on health and safety grounds.

Limefield House remained in the Young family for three generations, but as the industry collapsed in the area it lost its value. In 1955, one hundred years after James Young purchased it, his great-niece

So I asked Ian if there are any ghosts in the House. ‘‘Oh yes, we have lots of activity’’ he says. ‘‘Particularly on the stairs. There’s also a black labrador often seen in the corridors but which never materialises.’’ And on one occasion, a tiler working on the top floor of the house was approached by a man who asked, ‘‘Have you seen the little girl?’’

He wiped his hands and turned round but there was no-one there - or anywhere in the house. Many years ago a little girl drowned in Harwood Water on the estate was it one of her troubled relatives?

A path has been reinstated along Harburn Water, which includes Polbeth and Parkhead access to Limefield Falls, where a viewing platform has been constructed. The walk is a 2 - 3km circuit and joins the Murieston Trail path as well as the West Calder path leading to Five Sisters bing. Polbeth Community Council have been working with Central Scotland Forest Trust and West Lothian Council to improved the woodland along the Water, and have just been awarded “Winner of Community Woodland Category”, collecting the award at the Highland Show in June.

Whatever presences there are at Limefield, it’s a very peaceful area. The traces left here by its famous owner, of his private life and interests, contrast hugely with the traces we are more familiar with of his industrial empire in the form of the pink shale bings.

You Need To Face Your Fears To Overcome Them

I

had the chance to face fear headon recently, when I was at the top of Grouse Mountain, Vancouver, challenged by the adrenaline-pumping zip-wire tour. The five zip-lines were up to two hundred feet high, and reaching speeds of up to eighty kilometres an hour, high above the trees. I could so easily have pulled out after the first one, when I saw the drop and potential speed of the second. Instead, I dropped fully into the experience, and felt it; my hands were sweating, stomach churning, mouth so dry I could hardly speak, heart pounding and my body rigid with fear. The guide kept me calm, gently encouraged me, and away I went. I got to the end and found myself shaking, eyes welling up, legs like jelly, but also overjoyed that I had pushed myself to face the fear. It was an exhilarating experience. I was so pleased I had taken the plunge, pushed myself

beyond the normal to face the fear, feel it, and move beyond it, to see what I was capable of achieving.

We often underestimate our own strength and ability. Fear can stop us taking steps forward. Thoughts can overpower us and fear can be bigger than the experience actually is. Next time you face fear, notice how it really feels in more detail. Write down the experience, notice if there is a story about past events that is stopping you; let it go. Laugh at your fear, don’t dwell on it, be bold, believe in yourself, learn something new and let fear go. You never know what you might learn about yourself and your own ability. It could be life changing.

Socialising Dogs - What it Really Means

T

he term socialisation gets banded about a lot, however, not many people really understand what it involves or how important it is.

The majority of dogs I see for behavioural help, have had too little socialisation as puppies and this has affected them for the rest of their lives. To properly socialise a puppy means to gently expose them to all the things they will experience in everyday life. It is all about positive associations. This goes well beyond meeting people and other dogs - it includes different sights, sounds, smells and experiences.

Puppies have a critical time-frame for development and must experience all these things before they turn sixteen weeks old at the very latest, otherwise the opportunity is lost and makes rehabilitation difficult. At puppy classes I

use the phrase ‘The Rule of Twelve’ which states that a puppy should be exposed to twelve different types of people, twelve different sorts of dogs, twelve different sounds and so on by the age of twelve weeks. A common mistake in socialising, is to let your puppy greet every single dog they meet and allow them to do what they want. Unsupervised play is the cause of a lot of problems, and can end up with dogs enjoying the thrill of winding up other dogs or becoming aggressive if they are the one being bullied.

Socialisation is all about good experiences that set puppies up to be happy well-balanced dogs.

An Evening Walk in Eliburn

I

t never ceases to amaze me how many diverse walks there are without traveling too far from the local area. My children often nag me for a visit to Eliburn Park. For those of you unaware of the delights of this wonderful place, it is the park of every child’s dream, complete with everything from flying fox to climbing frames, gigantic slides to huge roundabouts.

However, on one such visit, I realised that there were also several walking routes in the vicinity of the park with paths criss-crossing the entire area. If you have children you can safely leave to play, then why not head off and explore the pathways while they have fun? Alternatively if you have younger children, you can dangle the carrot of fun in the play park after an invigorating walk!

A new park built around an ancient woodland, the landscaping incorporates a whole series of spirals built into grass mounds, benches and the like. They give added interest to any walk, however, it is the natural landscape that I find more inspiring when I wander the various pathways.

The simplest walk is around the Eliburn Reservoir just below the play park. A haven for anglers, it is best not to disturb them as you walk. It is also a haven for ducks and moorhens The reservoir and as you walk you can hear all manner of birdsong in the early evening.

This will only take around 15 minutes so if you fancy a longer walk, you can walk down the west side of the reservoir and keep going rather than cross the dam at the end. This will take you into Livingston Old Wood, rather like entering another time zone. It is hard to believe you are

surrounded in new build housing estates and dual carriageways as you walk the zigzagging pathways. You will eventually come to a surfaced path which is actually national cycle route 75. If you turn left you come to a pretty stone bridge that spans Lochshot Burn. This makes for a good resting spot and if you have your mobile handy you can text ELIBURN to 70300 to hear the Woodland Trust’s audio about Eliburn Wood (audio point 4).

You can then retrace your footsteps, this time going over the dam and walking up the other side of the reservoir.

Another option is to start the walk the same way, this time heading over the dam but instead of continuing around the reservoir, take the steps leading into the woods at the end of the dam. Follow the path through the woods and into open space, basically following the perimeter of the park, crossing over Houston Road, then turning left following the line of the road, before crossing back over and into the park once more. This second circular route is around 1.25 miles in length.

These are just a few ways you can enjoy walking in the surrounds of Eliburn Park and wood, but it would be very easy to spend hours wandering the myriad pathways, some prettier than others, which means you can find a different route every time you go.

Food for August

My own Special Birthday Meal

I

n my family we have a tradition: on your birthday you can choose the menu for the main meal that day. My birthday is in August and ever since I can remember, the main dish I request has always been the same:- beef stew with runner beans. When I was a child we lived in Wiltshire, south England, and my Mother was a demon vegetable gardener. This was partly her pleasure, but also to give us a variety of food that was just not available in those days at the small village shop.

Here are the recipes for my birthday favourites. My children have chosen many different birthday meals, reflecting their changing taste in food. What would your family go for I wonder?

The carrots were thinnings, and really sweet, and the beans were Scarlet Runners, grown up hazel bean poles at the end of the garden near the field. I have read since, that this type of bean came from Mexico in the 17th Century, and was first grown for its lovely scarlet or red and white flowers and attractive climbing habit. Runner beans then became a popular food for the Victorians.

Now there are several varities, some of which will grow in Scotland. But they are all tender, and a freak early frost can kill them in August, as I know to my sorrow. Runner beans are most delicious eaten as fresh as possible. They are in the shops from April, flown in from Zambia, but they are not quite as nice, so I try my luck growing them every year.

500gm Stewing Beef trimmed and cut in bite sized cubes (Ask the butcher for Skirt, shin or hough beef cuts. These are the best cuts for slow stewing, but other stewing beef will make a good dish.)

100gm beef dripping, or half and half dripping and olive oil 500gm sliced in rings onions 500gm scraped or peeled, sliced carrots Plain flour, salt, black pepper and a bay leaf if liked

Beef Stew (This is an economical dish and you can even use more vegetables or a little less meat. Serve with new or plain boiled potatoes and lightly cooked, finely sliced runner beans.)

In a large heavy- bottomed pan heat the fat/oil till smoking and fry the onions till browning but NOT burnt.

Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon, to metal colander or sieve placed over an oven proof casserole.

This will let you collect any juices.

Reserve as much fat as possible and use this to fry the carrots. Again drain them and use the reheated fat

to fry the beef in batches. Do not try to cook all the beef at once as it will cool the pan and the meat will be tough by the time it is browned .If you are running out of oil/fat melt a little more to cook the beef. Drain the beef and add it to the casserole.

Add any juice collected from the casserole to the fat in the pan and use as much plain flour as you need to soak it all up. You should have something which looks like dry bread crumbs. Over a low heat, slowly work in about a pint and a half of water; it will be a thick sauce. Bring to the boil. Try to avoid lumps, although they will cook out in the end in the oven. Pour the “gravy” into the casserole. There should be enough to cover the rest of the ingredients.

If there is not, add some more water, season lightly, add the bay leaf if you like. Cover and cook in a very slow oven 130°C or slow cooker for 3 to 4 hours. Check the seasoning.

The stew will be dark brown, glossy and because of the proportion of vegetables, slightly sweet. (It will be even better if you split the cooking time and re- heat it the next day.)

Cream for the runner beans ½ pint double cream Fresh Tarragon, Summer Savoury, Clove of Garlic, or Parsley Put the herb of choice and the cream into a heavy bottomed pan. Bring slowly to the boil and then set aside to cool, leaving the herb to steep.

Lightly cook any green beans you like, and just as you serve them, pour over the flavoured cream and turn the beans in it.

Coconut Beans Green beans 1inch slice creamed coconut Tabasco Top and tail the beans, rinse and put them in a pan with a little water clinging to them. Add the coconut and 2 or 3 drops of Tabasco Sauce.

Heat so that the creamed coconut melts and makes a sauce for the beans. Put a closely fitting lid on the pan and cook gently till the beans are bright green but covered in a spicy sauce.

Findus Frozen Foods have long gone, engulfed by some other food giant, I expect. Making a fruit mouse is a bit long winded and needs more time than most household cooks have today. However, here is a delicious pudding I learned for raspberries.

Lady R’s Raspberry Cream 450gm Raspberries 1 pint double cream Little icing sugar 150gm Caster Sugar.

Put the fruit in a shallow over-proof dish. The dish needs to be large enough to allow at least an inch more depth above the raspberries.

If liked, sprinkle a little icing sugar over the fruit. Half whip the cream. It must be beginning to thicken but not yet stiff. Spread the cream over the fruit in an even layer; try not to let any fruit poke through.

Cover all the cream in a thin, even layer of caster sugar, about 3 to 4 mm.

 Either melt the sugar to caramel under a VERY hot grill. Most domestic grills will not do this without cooking the cream;. Or use a gas torch to melt the sugar just as you can for crème brulée. You should end up with a glassy caramel surface on the cream.

The gas torch is the sort sold in B&Q as a plumber’s blow -lamp. Some do not like being used upside down.

You will have to tilt the dish, not as complicated as it sounds. There are special cook’s torches sold in cook shops, but at many times the price.

They do not do the job any better!

Making caramel is fun, but do take care; if hot sugar gets on your skin it can burn you badly. This part of the process is not suitable for children to undertake.

Bake at 160°C or 350°F, a moderate oven, for between 20 to 40 minutes.

Test with a skewer, it should come out clean. If you listen the cake will be silent. If it is still bubbling it is not quite cooked. Leave to cool .When cold, if you made one cake, cut it in two. Otherwise sandwich the two shallow cakes together with blackcurrant or black cherry jam and whipped cream, or Nutella or with chocolate butter icing.

Chocolate Cake 3 large eggs lightly beaten Their weight in Butter and Sugar, The same weight as the eggs of:half-and-half plain flour/cocoa powder, sifted twice. To this you must add baking powder at the rate of 1 tea-spoon full to each 4oz or 110gm of dry goods. (If you use self-raising flour instead of plain, add baking powder at half this rate.)

A little milk, or cold coffee.

Cream the butter and sugar together using an electric beater, Kenwood or blender. Add alternately egg and flour/cocoa, mixing lightly till all the ingredients are used. You should 32

harity invites older people in West Lothian to join them for a cuppa, cake and good company!

Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is inviting local residents to join its new group in West Lothian and enjoy a few hours of tea, chat and good company.

The charity, with the support of a volunteer network, organises tea parties for small groups of older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone and would appreciate some company on a Sunday afternoon.

Each older person is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home for the afternoon. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship.

Currently the group in West Lothian has capacity for a number of new guests to join and the charity is keen to raise awareness of these openings among the local community.

Contact the Elderly’s East Scotland Development Officer, Morna O’May, said: “Activities for people aged 75 and above are normally limited to weekdays, so Sunday can be a particularly long and difficult day. Our tea parties are sometimes the only social outing our guests have in a month, so they can make a real difference. We therefore wanted to make people aware that the West Lothian group is looking for guests and to encourage anyone interested in coming along, or those who know of people to whom it might appeal, to get in touch with us.
