Hello neighbours We’ve enjoyed the gala and fair season during May and feel very fortunate to be part of such a lively community where there are so many opportunities and activities for children and young people. The huge effort on the part of those who organise these events doesn’t go unappreciated! Now in the run up to the end of the school term, Emma Merchant has been chatting to Balerno High School’s head teacher Rory Mackenzie who hands over the reins of leadership at the end of term. Emma has also been focusing on Juniper Green for our feature article this month and we’ve learnt some intriguing things about junipers and the village. We have a local history article on Hatton House in our neighbouring parish of Ratho, which had links to various Balerno and Currie personalities. And of course our local walk feature and other regular columns.

In praise of Juniper By Emma Merchant
J
uniper Green is not named after the famous brand of gin, so where does it get its name?
Who knows what Juniper Green was called in the Early Bronze Age, but it was certainly civilised at the time! As reported by the Juniper Green 300 project in 2007, human remains now in the National Museums of Scotland found in a stone burial chamber in the garden of a butcher’s shop have been dated to 4300 years ago. The name Juniper Green is first mentioned in the Colinton Parish Kirk records of November 1707. At that time there were probably just a few cottages nestling beside Woodhall House on the south bank of the Water of Leith. Woodhall House dates from around 1630 and was Juniper Green’s most important residence for many years. Lady Mary Murray lived there and was mistress of the house for 25 years until 1702. Juniper was one of the floral emblems of her family’s crest. It is possible that the village was named in honour of her, but there is no direct evidence for that.
Juniper ranges widely round the globe, being found in Canada and the United States, Iceland, Japan, Africa Asia and Europe. Our local variety is common juniper (Juniperus communis). A member of the cypress family, it is a small, thorned, shrubby evergreen with aromatic blue-grey needles and all year round berry fruits. Juniper was probably once quite common in the Pentland area. Now, however, there are fewer places where it can grow, and young junipers are vulnerable to grazing animals. A few wild juniper bushes remain near Bonaly and beyond Balerno, but, in wider Scotland, juniper is now common only in the Highlands. In England also, juniper is declining. It is encouraging, then, that Rangers in the Pentlands are intervening locally, growing juniper bushes from cuttings and then planting them out to join the original stock once they are strong enough to survive. In 2005, some new junipers were planted in Dr Mackay’s Wood next to the bypass. Perhaps Juniper Green may yet live up to its name.
Scottish Plants Officer at the Royal Botanic Garden, Dr Heather McHaffie, suggests that Juniper Green was probably literally a juniper green - a small stretch of land scattered with juniper bushes, used for drying laundry. Linens would have been spread on the bushes to dry, the prickles preventing them from blowing away. There is some evidence for this. A map of Gillespie’s Farm estate in 1771 has a south west facing slope, beside the Water of Leith near the Tanners Pub, marked as a ‘bleachfield’, or bleaching green. This means a place where laundry would be exposed to the sun and wind to whiten, having been hand-washed in the Water of Leith. (Excuse me while I quickly go and give my washing machine a big hug!) However, there are no records of juniper trees in the village. In the early 1800s a Professor of Natural History specifically recorded that there were no junipers at all in the area.
As well as providing valuable food and shelter for wildlife, juniper is useful in many other ways. In cooking, especially in France, juniper berries are used to flavour game, and are put into marinades for pork and venison. They are also a traditional ingredient of

sauerkraut, and are found in some pâtés. Romans sometimes used juniper berries to replace pepper, but this was probably an acquired taste. The dried ground berries may have been sprinkled sparingly. (Raw juniper berries are astringent and very bitter, although they taste less so when dried.) Juniper is particularly loved by artists and wood turners. Although it does not grow big enough to be useful for making substantial furniture, it is much prized for its density and long-lasting fragrance. The gnarled twists and turns of the wood create interesting shapes, and have been exploited for abstract art. In Scandinavia, juniper wood is used to make dairy containers and knife handles, and Estonian handicraft shops are full of decorative juniper wood items. If junipers thrive here again, perhaps a local wood turner may be inspired to produce our own juniper products! Juniper is a favourite with bonsai enthusiasts because it grows fast and its bark can be stripped to reveal bare white wood as a contrast to the rich dark foliage. And because it twists and turns, juniper can be trained to produce the most amazing contorted miniature trees. When burned, juniper wood creates a dense, aromatic smoke, which is said to give barbequed food and smoked salmon a delicious winey flavour. Possibly due to the unusually pungent smell, juniper wood smoke was once believed to keep demons away, and sprigs of juniper were hung on doors to terrify witches.
Juniper berries are actually tiny cones, remaining on the bush for some time, so that both young green berries and mature purple berries may be seen together. Used as a medicinal ingredient, possibly since prehistoric times, the berries have been taken dried, fresh, whole, crushed or in teas. Ancient Greeks believed that juniper could help ward off epidemics, and the Romans considered it to have antiseptic qualities. In the Middle Ages, juniper was the answer for headaches, kidney and bladder conditions, and various infections, and it is still valued today by herbalists. Juniper is very strong, however, and like many natural remedies, and indeed all medicines, it can cause serious poisoning if not used with knowledge and caution. A muscle stimulant, it poses a risk of miscarriage in pregnant women, and should not be taken during pregnancy. Juniper berries are also added to many wines and liqueurs. The best known of these is gin, supposedly created four hundred years ago by a Dutch apothecary wishing to make his medicine more palatable! So, when next you enjoy a (medicinal!) gin and tonic, or sample French pâté on toast, consider the many virtues of Juniper Green’s namesake, the common juniper! Rory Mackenzie – School Leaver!
“
I left school at 16 and began working in a variety of jobs, ending up as a gas fitter. “ Rory Mackenzie never imagined then that he would become Headteacher of Balerno High School. This year he steps down after 35 years service, 16 as headteacher. Several years after first leaving school, an English teacher encouraged Rory to return to school. He took Highers at Stevenson’s College and went on to Edinburgh University and teacher training at Moray House. In 1976, he began his new career at James Gillespie’s High School, teaching English. In the following years, he worked at various High Schools, as Guidance Teacher, Assistant Head, and Depute Head before coming to Balerno as Headteacher. “I arrived on April 1st, of all days!” he remembers with a grin. “I walked into my office to find a completely bare desk, and cleared shelves. Even the lever-arch files had been emptied!” The previous head teacher had left behind no hints on picking up the job, but at least this gave Rory a clean sheet. His first change was to introduce an open door policy – starting with his own office. Out went the red, amber and green lights (!) the previous incumbent had installed above his door to signal availability. Rory was often amused to see people peering curiously in at him as they passed by!

Rory has always been, in his own words, “a political animal”, at one stage seriously considering a career in politics. He nearly became a Labour candidate but instead took up his first teaching post. Does he regret this? “No, not at all.” He feels his determination that every pupil deserves the best opportunity to succeed at school is rooted in his politics. “One of my greatest pleasures is to watch young people grow in confidence and capability. I am delighted that this year 92% of our school leavers found work or pursued further or higher education.” Times have not always been easy. When still fairly new to the post, Rory steered the school through a difficult period when a killing involving ex-students from Balerno and Currie High Schools rocked the community. “The Dunblane tragedy was another anxious period for everybody,” he remembers, “and, of course, we have often had to find ways of coping with education cuts.”
Rory looks back over his years at the school with great affection. Jupiter Artland is a unique place; the stunning woodland and open fields are home to sculpture by some of the world’s most talented contemporary sculptors. It is a place where children are instantly comfortable and they absorb the atmosphere learning almost without noticing. The combination of art and animals – miniature donkeys, chickens, sheep and even the odd alpaca is a reassuring mix for children. One minute you are looking at an overwhelming 12 metre metal orchid and a short stroll away sheep graze in the meadow blissfully unaware that they live alongside such iconic works. Children begin to observe things differently as they learn about the artists and see the way art and nature interact. The aim of all courses at Jupiter 18
An exciting 3 day course investigating the collection with lots of fun outdoor and indoor activities. This course is being run by Davina Richardson, a hugely talented and experienced teacher who has worked with us at Jupiter often before. With a special focus on the Marc Quinn orchid, the children will create large scale collages as well as a variety of work on paper and sculpture. The course runs from 10am to 4pm. For 5 to14 year olds. Drop in holiday workshops On the 5th, 12th and 19th of August we will be offering three drop in workshop days that children can join from either 10.30am to 12.30pm or 1pm to 3pm. The sessions will allow children to have their own unique look at the collection while their parents have theirs too! For 5 to 15 year olds.

It will be led by a new recruit to Jupiter, Izzy Chapell, who is a very inspiring and experienced nursery teacher with a special interest in the performing arts. “Little Sparks” will run every Tuesday morning from 9.30 to 12 in our new woodland classroom from the 30th August to the 22nd November. The sessions will include an outdoor activity to initiate an art workshop based on the collection and around natural themes. Every session the children will produce a piece of artwork to take home. Children will also have related singing, drama and imaginative play activities built into the mornings. untrap Garden is signed off the A71 near the Hermiston Park and Ride. We’ve all probably driven past the signs many times, but how many of us have actually visited Suntrap? I was approached by the Friends of Suntrap who are currently fighting to save the garden from being sold and built on, so I went along this month to find out what it’s all about.
The garden is nestled away in Gogarbank. It is currently owned partly by the National Trust and partly by Oatridge College, and has been used for many years as a horticultural teaching resource and a horticultural therapy centre, providing vocational training, community gardening and a range of other services. Many courses “Wildlife Motel” were for students from special schools or with learning difficulties, as well as night school and recreational classes for amateur local gardeners. With changes at Oatridge the garden facility is no longer required and a buyer is being sought. It extends over about three acres and is divided up into delightful and beautifully maintained themed areas including the Italian garden, the oriental garden, the sensory garden, the potager and the woodland garden, to name a few. It is also home to the National Bonsai Collection of Scotland. Suntrap was bequeathed in 1972 to the National Trust and what was then Lothian Regional Council by George Boyd Anderson. Boyd Anderson was originally from Lossiemouth and he made his fortune in the rubber trade in Malaya. Besides Suntrap, where he built his home in 1957 and stayed til his death, he also bequeathed to the nation the land at Hillend on which Midlothian Snowsports Centre is now located and the Lagganlia outdoor education centre in the Highlands. He was a keen amateur gardener and his bequest

of Suntrap was that it should be used to “provide gardening advice for those with small gardens” s use Greenhoom plastic bottle and encourage made fr botanical education. He was an innovator and a pioneer of domestic green energy years ahead of his time – the house he built at Suntrap, called Milbuies, was insulated, double-glazed, had underfloor heating and wind turbines on the roof, all of which is very remarkable for the 1950s. He made use of solar energy to heat the house and other buildings on the land. A battery of electric meters in the garage monitored the cost of the various systems in the house. Milbuies today is still pretty much how Boyd Anderson left it. At the Konect Directory we often research and visit grand old houses for our history articles; this house is not grand or beautiful and at first glance it is rather nondescript. But walking around the house and learning a little about Boyd Anderson you can soon see that it was very carefully designed and a lot of thought and care went into getting it “just right.” The Friends of Suntrap was formed in 1977 and since then volunteers have cared for and assisted in the running of the garden. They were the first Friends group of any National Trust property. They are now fighting to save Suntrap and keep it running as a working garden so that this resource is not lost to the community and that the garden can continue to be run in the spirit in which Boyd Anderson intended. une is National Microchipping Month run by the Kennel Club and Petlog, to promote microchipping as the preferred method of permanent identification. A microchip is a small implant (the size of a grain of rice) that is inserted into the skin between the shoulder blades of your dog, cat or rabbit. It contains a unique registration number that is entered onto an international database, and if your pet is found any vet, animal warden or police can use a reader to read the number, access the database and contact you to reclaim your pet. The microchip lasts the lifetime of your pet and Identichip microchips have an anti-migration cap which ensures that it stays in place. lways on the look out for somewhere different to have a stroll, enjoy the fresh air and take in some views, I took up a friend’s suggestion and headed into the Pentland Hills from Bonaly. It’s not too far; simply drive to Colinton, go right onto Woodhall Road and left onto Bonaly Road, following the road as it narrows substantially until you reach a car park. Through the gate and the hills are straight ahead. Immediately you have a choice of left, right or straight ahead and any of these walks are well worth it. Stout walking boots are probably best as the terrain can be rough and muddy and it is sometimes fairly steep. Straight ahead takes you fairly immediately up and over to Bonaly Reservoir, across heather moorland and ultimately to Glencorse Reservoir. Left will take you to Dreghorn and right will take you to the Torduff Reservoir. When you are standing in the car park it seems unlikely there lie ahead so many reservoirs as they are entirely hidden from view, however there they are - some still serving the city’s water supply, others no longer in use. I fancied Torduff and on to Clubbiedean Reservoir so took the right path. The first thing to note is the wonderful panoramic views over the city that appear as soon as the path veers to the left. It follows along the side of the hill and down some wooden steps to the reservoir where you walk along the old dam wall to the other side. Turn left following signs for Easter Kinleith and walk
along the side of the reservoir; again I am surprised at the beauty and tranquility of this place. There are a few dog walkers but it is by no means crowded and I wandered slowly taking in the birdsong and the way nature knows her colours so well that the gorse is interspersed with fading bluebells - the yellow and blue on opposing sides of the colour wheel working beautifully together on the hillside. The path follows over a wooden bridge, with a small waterfall tumbling down the right hand side. You are faced with another choice of paths here - straight ahead through a stile to complete the circuit and back to the car park, or follow the path as it turns sharply right signed again for Easter Kinleith. I headed that way to see where it would take me. There is quite a steep incline at first levelling out at the next reservoir - Clubbiedean. Again the views are breathtaking. Not over the city this

A Reservoir Ramble By Karen Murray
time, but over the heather moorland and the fields and across to the Ochil hills. Various birds swooped and dipped around me and the sheep grazed quietly in the fields. There is an old Iron Age Fort at Clubbiedean which 2000 years ago would have made an impressive sight with ramparts up to five metres high and ditches up to five metres deep. The path continues along the side of the reservoir and then onto a gravel track along a ridge. Veering right, it heads downhill to the farm at Easter Kinleith. There are, as ever in the Pentland Hills, a number of options here. You can follow a less defined path around the other side of Clubbiedean Reservoir, cutting across to Bonaly Reservoir and back to the car park, or simply directly back to the car park. I then went through the stile and gates on the right and uphill onto the heather moorland. This area has a very different feel to it - much bleaker but the heather is home to ground nesting birds such as skylarks and meadow pipits so be careful not to disturb them. It is also lambing season between April and July so it is best to keep your dog on a lead.
If you are exceptionally lucky you might just spot some rare white heather which is considered lucky. So the story goes,
Malvina, the Celtic Bard Ossian’s daughter, wept at the death of her betrothed and where her tears fell the heather turned pure white. She wished good fortune on all who found it and it is still thought to be lucky to this day. It is however not all that long before you hit Sanctuary Woodland and the atmosphere changes once more. The path continues through the woods and then downhill quite rapidly to reach the car park at the bottom. The simple circuit of Torduff Reservoir, which can be done the opposite way to the way I walked following the ‘tap’ signs, is around 1.5 miles in length and will take about 45 minutes, but it is very tempting when you are there to branch off on the myriad paths and see where they lead. If you are going to do this however, do remember that even in the seemingly innocent Pentland Hills the weather can change at any moment and you should go prepared for all weather conditions.

Hatton House – grandest of them all By Helen-Jane Shearer
T
hese days you don’t need Mons Meg, the giant cannon now at the top of Edinburgh Castle, to gain access to the site of Hatton House from the A71. But in 1453 King James II accompanied his massive flagship weapon here to besiege Hatton in order to evict clan Douglas followers, in a tale of regal plotting, murder and revenge... At that time “Haltoun” was a massive L-shaped tower house with walls 3 metres thick, owned by the Lauder family, built by Alan de Lauder in 1377. With tensions rising between King James II and the Douglases, Sir William Lauder of Haltoun was a confidant of both the King and the 8th Earl of Douglas. The King summoned the Earl of Douglas to Stirling Castle in 1452, and Lauder was the King’s personal messenger sent to escort the Earl. When the King murdered Douglas there Haltoun Tower was seized by outraged Douglas followers and during the struggle Sir William Lauder was killed. The king personally led the seige to take Haltoun Tower back. Crown accounts of the time refer to the cost of transporting “the great bombard” (Mons Meg) and go on to list costs for stone cannon balls, javelins and arrows, the construction of a movable hut to protect the quarrymen hewing their way

through the walls and all the trappings of a well fitted-out siege. Hatton remained in the Lauder family until 1653. It was a significant local stronghold and the Lauders were an important family who played their part in current affairs. During the reign of Mary Queen of Scots, the 4th Earl of Bothwell was, it seems, “favourable to the laird of Haltowne “ ; and it was in his house that he slept on the night of 23rd April 1567, before his abduction of the Queen. In 1653 the Hatton estate passed into the hands of Charles Maitland, later the 3rd Earl of Lauderdale, who had married into the Lauder family, and he began to transform it from a crude fortified tower into a magnificent country house. Around the ancient tower house he added wings and turrets. He also started remodelling the grounds on a lavish scale, turning it into one of the most elegant country estates of the time. He held high office in the Scottish Parliament and was appointed Master General of the Scottish Coinage in 1661. He took the opportunity to run three large-scale coinage frauds and used treasury funds to create his impressive new estate. Besides the coinage frauds, which came to light in a judicial enquiry in 1682, he was suspected in 1689 of acting “contirar to the government” of William III and sent to prison. Hatton House was searched for “cannon, armes and amonutione.” Six muskets and cannon were found, confiscated and taken to Edinburgh Castle.
Gateway on the A71 Proven ill-gotten gains don’t seem to have had consequences for the Hatton estate. A 16th century visitor to Hatton wrote that “there is no residence in the Lothians west of Edinburgh to compare with Hatton House save Hopetoun.” By this time it had over fifty bedrooms and stabling for seventy horses on grounds of 240 acres. By the early years of the eighteenth century, Hatton was one of the noblest residences in all Scotland. The top of the original tower was a balustraded viewing platform commanding views of the surrounding countryside and hills. The main approach to the house was via a mile-long grand avenue from the east and was lined by a double row of oaks, beeches and limes. There was a large walled garden, bowling green, formal rose garden, and terraced area in front of the house and beyond it a “wilderness” complete with an artificial lake. The fifth Earl of Lauderdale was titled Lord Ravelrig, having lived at Ravelrig for a while before inheriting Hatton. The Maitland family residence at Hatton ended in 1792 when it was sold by the 8th Earl. The property changed hands many times. It was purchased in 1797 by Mr James Gibson (afterwards Sir James Gibson-Craig, Baronet of Riccarton), who broke up the estate and sold it off in portions for speculative gain. The house itself went to Rev., Dr. Thomas Davidson for £14,000. The Renaissance gateway, which can be seen today on the A71 near the intersection with Linburn Road, was originally located half-way along the main eastern approach avenue to Hatton House. The date ANNO DOM 1692 is engraved on the keystone of the arch. It was moved to its current location on the Edinburgh road by Captain Davidson in 1829 (that date is also engraved on it).
The upper part of the antique ornamental ironwork of this gateway is said to have been wrought by one of the Earls who enjoyed ironwork - the Eastern Pavilion of Hatton House was known as Lord Lauderdale’s Forge, where tradition has it one of the Earls had a forge. The house had several owners over the years and many famous visitors. Until, on the evening of 25th February 1952 the owner returning from Edinburgh found the house had mysteriously caught fire. The roof and upper floor were completely destroyed, while the other floors were extensively damaged by water. The Evening Dispatch of 26th February said: “One portion after another of the house, which contained four floors, was involved in the blaze, until there was no part of the building which was free from the flames.” The ruins were taken down and the stones removed to various unknown locations; the estate was sold off in pieces. All that remains today are two corner pavilions, some of the walls and of course the Western Gate on the A71. Despite some decline in its last decades before the 1952 fire, Hatton House was one of the most spectacular of grand Scottish homes from its founding in the 14th century through murder, fraud, royal favours and clan battles to the sad romantic remains of today. Preparation time: 35-45 minutes Instructions 1. Put the sliced aubergines, tomatoes and whole spring onions into a large shallow dish. Whisk the olive oil, white wine vinegar and garlic together with plenty of seasoning and pour over the vegetables and toss well. 2. Barbecue the aubergine slices directly over a medium high heat for 4-5 minutes each side, until tender and marked. Remove and put into a large shallow bowl. Barbecue the tomatoes and spring onions for 3-4 minutes, turning once. Add these to the aubergines. Crumble the goat’s cheese over the hot vegetables and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil. Toss very gently. 3. To serve, scatter the basil leaves over the vegetables. Warm the floured tortillas on the barbecue for 1-2 minutes, turning once. Allow each guest take a spoonful from the platter of vegetables and goat’s cheese and fold up in a warm tortilla.

Children’s eduCation Courses and aCtivities Due to popular demand Jupiter Artland is expanding its holiday and preschool courses to complement the education programme we run during term time. We have created a superb woodland classroom with an outdoor area under the trees which will act as a fantastic base for all our activities. 26th to 28th July an exciting 3 day Artsparks course investigating the collection with lots of fun outdoor and indoor activities. With a special focus on the Marc Quinn orchid the children will create large scale collages as well as a variety of work on paper and sculpture. 5th, 12th and 19th August drop in workshops for 5 to 15 year olds during Jupiter’s opening hours. These themed workshops are based on mud printing and sculpting, Jencks’ landforms and Andy Goldsworthy’s work at Jupiter. 22nd and 23rd August a 2 day course inspired by Charles Jencks building our own earthworks and landforms which will transform your garden forever! We are very excited to announce the launch of Little Sparks an Artsparks preschool group. It will be led by a new recruit to Jupiter, Izzie Chappell, who is a very inspiring and experienced nursery teacher with a special interest in the performing arts. Little Sparks will run every Tuesday morning from 9.30 to 12 in our new woodland classroom from 30th August to 22nd November. The sessions will include an outdoor activity to initiate an art project based on the collection and around natural themes.
