Hello neighbours ‘Tis the season for spooky stories and strange happenings ... and our feature article this month looks at two mysterious events from the local area, one in Livingston and the other on the A70 in Kirknewton near Harperrig Reservoir. Both happened a few years ago, but both are the subject of current TV and film projects they are still a subject of fascination as they have never been fully explained, so read the article on pages 8 and 9 and draw your own conclusions!

R

ounding a corner of a woodland path on Dechmont Law, a forester going about his job in November 1979 entered a clearing and came upon a large dome-shaped metallic object.

So begins the tale of one of the most significant UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) incidents in Europe. Known as “The Livingston Incident” in paranormal research circles, on police files it remains an unsolved case of “an attack by person or persons unknown.”

Robert Taylor, employee of the Livingston Development Corporation, was on a routine inspection of the Dechmont Law hillside one November morning, accompanied by his Irish red setter, to check fences to ensure that sheep and cattle didn’t stray into the wood. No-one witnessed what happened, until he turned up at his home in Deans on foot later that morning in a state of shock and barely able to speak. He had reversed his truck into a ditch, his trousers were ripped and his dog was very agitated. He stammered to his incredulous wife, “I have been attacked by a spaceship.”

Robert’s story, which he maintained throughout his life, was that as he came upon this large dome- shaped object in the clearing, two round objects dropped from it to the ground and started rolling towards him, making sucking and popping noises.

His dog was barking madly and there was an overwhelming burning smell. As they got near to him, projections came out of them towards his hips, grabbed him and pulled him forcibly towards the larger object. At this point he lost consciousness.

When he came to, the object had gone leaving nothing but imprints in the ground and Robert in a state of shock. He managed to stumble back to his truck but reversed it into a ditch, such was his disorientation. He staggered home to Deans on foot.

Robert’s assertion that he had been attacked by a spaceship and his description of the event led to the involvement of Strange Phenomena Investigations (SPI), a research society headed by Malcolm Robinson. I spoke to Malcolm, who was on site the following day to photograph the imprints on the ground and to interview the police and LDC personnel involved.

The police forensic analysis of the ripped trousers concluded that they had not been torn by any forest debris (i.e. not by branches or sharp plants of any sort) nor by barbed wire. There was no explanation for the marks in the ground, and after thorough investigation by the police and forensic experts, the case remains unsolved.

Robert’s boss and colleagues described him as a steady sane person, not given to telling stories and with no interest in the paranormal.

I asked Malcolm how he went about investigating such cases. “You have to rule out the obvious explanations. I always ask people if they are on any medication.

They may be after notoriety. There are lots of possible explanations so you have to be very careful.” He became fascinated by the paranormal when he set out as a young man to disprove the existence of ghosts. After some personal experiences and listening to the experiences of many other people he gradually began to change his mind. He now runs Strange Phenomena Investigations and says that the vast majority of reports of strange happenings can be explained. But he believes that there are enough unexplainable incidents to convince him that, he says, “there is evidence to suggest that humans have

been visited by beings from elsewhere – not necessarily extra terrestrial but from a different dimension”.

A National Geographic programme is scheduled to be screened in early next year on the best UFO cases across Europe. “The Livingston Incident” features as part of the documentary and Malcolm was involved in the filming of it recently. He has also been approached by a film company who are currently making a film for release next year based on another UFO incident in this area – the “A70 Incident.”

they couldn’t account for the missing time.

Neither Garry nor Colin had any interest whatsoever in the paranormal and, totally non-plussed, they didn’t report the incident to anyone besides friends. But they became increasingly troubled by nightmares, and in Garry’s case, severe headaches; both men found scars on their bodies that weren’t there before. They eventually contacted Malcolm at SPI, who encouraged them to undergo hypnotic regression therapy to try to discover what had happened that evening during the lost hour. Although sceptical, they were desperate for their own sanity and agreed to the hypnotherapy.

They have no recollection of what happened, but in a series of hyphotherapy sessions they described their experiences.

They were apparently taken into the craft and underwent various experiments at the hands of small grey creatures, some of them painful.

The “A70 Incident” is still a subject of fascination, and since as far as anyone involved can tell Garry and Colin did not fabricate the whole story, their experience remains unexplained.

The stretch of the A70 from Kirknewton to Lanark, the “Lang Whang” is a quiet route between the heather-covered hills and has a bleak and remote aspect. It is the location of another unexplained incident, this time in 1992. Two men from Edinburgh, Gary Woods and Colin Wright, were driving along the A70 heading for Tarbrax one evening. As they turned one of the sharp corners just past Harperrig Reservoir, they were faced with what they described as a two-tiered black disc hovering motionless above the road. Shocked, they decided nevertheless to just drive under it and keep going. As they passed under the object, it emitted a curtain of mist which, as it reached the car, enveloped them in total blackness. Moments later, they regained sight and the car was shuddering.

Somewhat shaken, they continued their drive to Tarbrax. But, on arriving at their friend’s house they discovered that it was an hour later than they had thought; the journey which normally took 30 – 40 minutes had taken an hour and a half and

t’s around this time of year that people start thinking of getting the Christmas presents organised. And thinking of the kids who so desperately want a rabbit or a puppy, a trip to the pet shop is planned for Christmas Eve.

The Dog’s Trust slogan “a dog is for life, not just for Christmas” goes for every animal. They need love, care and attention and though it may seem like a fantastic present, an animal is actually a long term commitment.

But it’s vital to consider carefully if you will be able to look after the animal properly. A puppy is a big commitment in terms of time for proper training, care and attention. Will the new rabbit or kitten be loved and looked after, or will it just be like a new toy and once the novelty has worn off, it is left with no handling after a few weeks?

uddhist monks in Bangkok were asked to move their temple further up land because of new road developments. As the monks started to transport their belongings, one of them noticed a few cracks appearing in their six foot clay Buddha. Quickly he shone a torch and noticed something shining back at him. Grabbing tools he started to chip away at the clay to see what was sparkling behind it. Several hours later the monk stood back in amazement!

There stood the most magnificent six foot Golden Buddha!

THE PROJECTS YOU WILL HELP Youth Groups need your help We want to start a youth club in Kirknewton.

The Kosy Kafe is looking for volunteers to keep it open. The playgroup have struggled for funds. Laptops in the school have missing keys. We would like to see a youth coordinator to support such groups.

Help develop a cycle/walking multipath from Kirknewton Over the last year a group of volunteers have been working with the Forestry Commission on a cycle/multipath route around nearby Selm Muir Wood and they need to fund a plan for an off road route from the village to get there.

Help pay for the Resource Centre roof!

We have to contribute £20,000 of funds to the Resource Centre build and, because of planning, the original (donated) roof is now having to be paid for – another £20,000!

A walk through history

W

alking simply for walking’s sake is perfectly fine. Exercise is not only important in our every day lives, it is perhaps paramount in today’s sedentary times. However, if you can combine a walk with some historical or geographical interest, all the better.

Having often headed to village of Cramond to grab a walk and some fresh sea air - it being a great area for the kids to practice cycling, roller skating or scootering - I have always fancied checking out the ruins of the Roman settlement that lie between the Church and the shoreline.

Parking in the main car park at Cramond, there is a narrow and somewhat muddy path leading directly from the car park to the ruins.

During the Roman occupation of Britain, Cramond was an important coastal fort. It was built at the mouth of the Almond River in 142 AD to protect the eastern frontier established by the Romans. The fort was occupied until about 170 AD, and then again briefly between 208 and 211 AD. Later, what is now Cramond Kirk was built within the ruins of the fort, and the foundations of the fort were only rediscovered in 1954.

Perhaps even more interesting than the striking remains from the Roman occupation of the area, the archaeological excavations

that were carried out revealed a site that has been dated to 8,500 years ago - making this the oldest evidence of human occupation in Scotland.

As you wander around the excavation site, reading the interpretation boards, the fort comes alive in front of you. It happened to be the annual Doors Open Days weekend when I visited so the Kirk was open to all visitors and investigation of the excavation site actively encouraged.

That said I was on a walk and in need of exercise, so while I enjoyed the historical interlude, I stepped quickly through history and into the walled park area behind the Kirk.

A play park here might distract the kids, but also add to their enjoyment of the exercise.

The path continues along the length of the high wall and out the other side, but ignore the exit and continue on the path as it heads back into the wooded park area becoming narrower and muddier as the trees encroach.

There is a seemingly disused series of ‘outdoor gym’ structures that I personally chose to ignore but I could probably have increased the exercise regime by giving them a go.

The whole circuit of the walled area does not take long - maybe 15 minutes from the car park to the ‘kissing gate’ exit on the far side of the park. This exit brings you out onto a field overlooking the Cramond shoreline and across to Cramond Island. Here things get a little soggy underfoot - the path is a little unclear and goes across fields but basically heads straight(ish) down towards the path along the

shoreline - just aim for the corresponding gate at the bottom of the field.

From there, you can complete a simple loop by walking along the tarmac path back to the village itself and the car park. A relatively quick walk but with various terrain and plenty of history.

Of course if it happens to be low tide, you are bound to be tempted to walk out the island do ONLY try this two hours either side of low tide though as you might end up stuck over there for some while and there is not much in the way of shelter. It was in fact low tide when I visited and sorely tempted though I was, I decided on a walk on the beach instead and then a look around the exhibition and education centre which runs at weekends between May and September at the Maltings, Riverside. You get a great insight into the history of Cramond Island when it used to be inhabited. It would be worth looking around the exhibition before making the trip over the causeway to the island.

If you have timed it well and decide to make the walk out to and around the island, you will be in need of refreshment on your return.

Peggy McLachlan Family History Column

hile researching your family you will come across many stories of hardship and heartache.

One particular story I have in my tree concerns my Great Grandmother Peggy McLachlan. Peggy was born on the 1st February 1862 in Nairn and lived to the age of 81. It is hard for me to comprehend the life that she lived but I think she must have been a very strong and amazing lady.

At the age of 21 she married my Great Grandfather Kenneth MacKenzie; Peggy was at the time nearly 9 months pregnant and she gave birth to the first of 12 children 25 days after the wedding. I have always imagined that this must have been a ‘shot-gun’ wedding, with my Great Great Grandparents ensuring that Kenneth made an honest woman of Peggy! The couple’s youngest child Jessie arrived on 2nd October 1905 - 12 children in 22 years; Peggy was 43 years old.

Jessie never knew her father as Kenneth was killed in an accident 5 months before she was born and Peggy was left a widow with 9 children under the age of 18.

When I found Kenneth’s death entry, I saw that the record had an RCE attached.

This stands for Register of Corrected Entries and means that there has been some amendment made to the original entry. It could mean that the informant who registered the event gave the wrong details or that someone had changed their name but in this case it meant that there was an amendment made to the cause of Kenneth’s death.

Following the introduction of the Fatal Accidents Inquiry (Scotland) Act 1895 accidents have to be investigated in court, and the RCE told me that the cause of Kenneth’s death was “shock caused by injuries received, as per the verdict of the jury”. This gave me a clue, had there been a fatal accident enquiry into Kenneth’s death? Could the court papers from the enquiry have survived?

My next stop was the National Records of Scotland who hold Records of the Court of Session and Sheriff Courts. http://www.nas.gov.uk/catalogues/ default.asp A search of their catalogue revealed that they did indeed hold the papers concerning the Fatal Accident Enquiry and after leafing through a very large book I came across all the paperwork pertaining to the enquiry. The information it contained was extensive and included Kenneth’s employer, a list of names of those on the jury, a description of how the accident happened, a description of Kenneth’s injuries, witness statements and the verdict.

Kenneth had been helping to build a new electricity works in the town of Inverness and he was pushing a wheelbarrow containing lime or stones up a plank which was placed between some scaffolding when the scaffolding and plank fell to the ground.

The document makes sad but fascinating reading. Peggy survived; she brought up her children, including my Grandpa, also named Kenneth, who was 11 years old when his father died. I have so much admiration for my Great Grandmother, a strong Highlander!

November Recipe and Food Notes

M

ost harvests are over by November, the exception being grapes for very special sweet wines which are left on the vine till the frost concentrates the juice. The other, more practical, harvests for the month are chestnuts and dried beans. Both of these are much enjoyed by the Italians who use them in delicious and innovative ways.

Chestnuts do not have to be half raw, burnt and difficult to peel, nor need they be reserved for the brussel sprouts for the Christmas meal. The nuts can become Marron glacee and then, after grating and adding to whipped, sweetened cream become Mont Blanche pudding.

The flour from the chestnuts is very nutritious and was the saving of people on restricted diets in harsh winters in Central Europe. They added it to bread and soups or stews when there was little else to feed them. There are several wonderful rich continental cakes which use chestnut flour with chocolate, just right for eating with strong coffee in Vienna or at home as a special treat.

Italian Chestnut Soup The recipe gives instructions for dealing with fresh nuts; but you can find cooked, plain frozen chestnuts in some supermarkets, especially at this time of year. They are very good, save waste and work and you can use as few as you like.

500gm chestnuts 2 onions chopped fine 1 carrot chopped fine 1 stick celery chopped fine butter or bacon fat for frying 2 1/2 pints stock or water Salt, pepper, chopped parsley Score the bottom of the chestnuts and bake them in a slow oven or boil them gently for 15 minutes. They will then be easy to peel.

Fry the onions and when browned add and fry the other veg. Add the water or stock and the peeled chestnuts.

Cook gently for 40 minutes till the nuts are breaking up.

Whiz in a liquidizer or puree with a hand -blender or press through a sieve.

Check the seasoning, add salt, pepper and chopped parsley to taste and serve with croutons fried in either butter or bacon fat.

If you want to make more of a meal of the dish you can add sliced cooked salami or chorizo.

Lamb and Aubergine in Red Cabbage Leaves November makes me think of red cabbage which I believe is an under valued vegetable. Here is an interesting way to use it.

350gm minced lamb 75gm streaky bacon chopped fine 1 medium aubergine cut in small chunks 6 large red cabbage leaves 50gm dried white bread crumbs 2 eggs beaten salt, pepper, ground cumin,ground coriander, chopped parsley table spoon tomato puree.

200gm tin chopped tomatoes a little red wine if you have some Carefully remove 6 large leaves from the cabbage. Blanch them in boiling water and refresh in cold water. They will be pliable and are the wraps for the dish.

Keep them under a damp tea cloth till the filling mixture is ready.

Brown the onion with the bacon and aubergine. Then add the lamb mince and brown this too.

In a bowl mix the bread crumbs and the eggs, salt, pepper, cumin, coriander, tomato puree, parsley and mix well together. Add the meat and veg and mix.

Divide this filling between the 6 cabbage leaves and roll them up, making a parcel for the meat. Secure them with a toothpick and put them in a shallow ovenproof baking dish. Cover with the broken up tomatoes and a little more liquid (red wine,tomato juice or stock) Bake in 160ยบC for 60-80 minutes.

The rest of the cabbage can be used as a hot veg or for a more interesting coleslaw.

After all this savoury food a quick store cupboard pudding :

Apricot Mousse 425gm can apricots in juice 1 tablespoon sugar 8gm or sachet gelatine 1/2 pint double cream lightly whipped Liquidise or blend the fruit with its juice.

In a cup or heat proof mug, soften the gelatine with a little water or white wine. Put the cup in a small pan with water half-way up the cup. Warm till the gelatine dissolves and looks clear. Mix with the fruit puree. Gently mix in the sweetened whipped cream. Put in a bowl or individual pots to set in the fridge for at least 2 hours. Decorate with chopped dried apricots, nibbled almonds or a little whipped cream if you feel festive.

Local Charity River Kids

R

iver Kids is a home-grown West Lothian charity focussing on local children in need, be that supporting an individual family in difficulty or a children’s group. They provide support in many ways, from help for a child with a disability, equipment for a children’s group or making the lives of disadvantaged children brighter via birthday and Christmas presents that they would not otherwise receive.

Set up in October 2005, River Kids was originally part of River FM, a radio station that closed in January 2007. One of the original trustees, Wendy Simpson, continued alone without the resources that the station had offered. Starting from scratch and overcoming many obstacles, the charity is now active throughout West Lothian, raising money from direct donations, fundraising events and bucket collections to help struggling families and children.

So far this year River Kids has provided support for 41 local children to continue their training amidst funding cuts, as well as paying for transport for a group of children with disabilities to go on a coach trip to a theme park, support for children to go on school trips, started a refurb at A&E at St John’s Hospital and aided a local football team with support and contacts to receive equipment. It has also provided birthday presents for many disadvantaged children along with more essential items.

Its first fundraising event was a bucket collection at The Centre, Livingston, in November 2005. This raised £600 which was donated to St. John’s hospital to host a Christmas party for the kids receiving treatment that year. The hospital was also hoping to have a play area for children at the hospital, and together with the Sick Kids Friends Foundation, River Kids helped raise enough money to have it completed in September 2009.

The big focus at this time of the year is the West Lothian Children’s Toy Appeal. Every Christmas toys are distributed around West Lothian to children in need, as recommended by authorities. In December 2011 over 10 000 toys were distributed to over 1,200 children. This Christmas the aim is to reach even more children, as well as to expand it out to include birthdays throughout the year. Now is a good time to have a pre-Christmas clear-out and donate any unwanted toys in good condition to River Kids so that they can be distributed to children less fortunate than your own. The charity is also arranging a breakfast with Santa every weekend of December at The Centre, Livingston and a Christmas party on the 8th December at Livingston FC.

Wendy has worked tirelessly for River Kids since it was founded and was this year awarded the well-deserved Fundraising Hero status by Daily Record Our Heros awards.

On 10.11.12 they are going to spend the day in the wood clearing a route and building up some ditches with the Forestry Commission and are looking for some volunteers.
