A Victorian Vision

the Almond Valley Viaduct

S

tar of paintings, countless photographs, West Lothian Council’s logo and a striking feature in the landscape for 170 years, Almond Valley Viaduct strides purposefully and majestically across the river valley and flood plain.

The viaduct took 3 years to build (1839 – 1842) and formed part of the new Edinburgh to Glasgow railway line. The viaduct and railway line are still in use today, Scotrail’s Sprinter trains flashing across it in seconds.

Rail travel in the early to mid-19th century was in its infancy with each new line being promoted by a private company. In 1837, the newly-formed Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Company put together plans to connect Edinburgh and Glasgow by rail.

Led by chairman John Leadbetter, a linen merchant and member of Glasgow Town Council, the new company appointed John Miller as engineer.

Miller’s route and design kept the railway as level as possible over as much of the route as he could. Early steam locomotives struggled with gradients, and viaducts and tunnels helped avoid this. The planned maximum gradient was 1 in 880 making the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway the most level main line in the UK.

An Act of Parliament on 4th July 1838 authorised the line giving the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Company the green light. The adopted route began at a new eastern terminus in Edinburgh – Haymarket - (Edinburgh General Station, later renamed Waverley, didn’t open till 1846), continued over the Almond Valley Viaduct, through the Winchburgh Tunnel, via Linlithgow to Falkirk, and on to its new western terminus at Glasgow’s Queen Street.

The 45-mile route was divided up like slices of cake. Advertisements appeared in the public newspapers for contractors to give in tenders for execution of different sections of the work. The advertisement for the largest slice, including the heaviest engineering work on the line - the Almond Valley Contract – said, “Contract No 1: Being that part of the line extending from near Norton Farm House in the Parish of Ratho to near West Inch in the Parish of Abercorn, and in length 9000 yards or thereby. This contract will include a great extent of cutting and embankment, two viaducts the one across the Almond Water Valley 682 yards long and about 70 feet high and the other across the Edinburgh and Glasgow road 108 yards long and about the same height, a tunnel thro’ Winchburgh Ridge 350 yards long, laying the rails and otherwise completing the lot”.

Each contract stated “Contractors shall be completely finished on or before the 1st day of July 1841 with a penalty of £20 per day for every day it shall remain unfinished after that date”.

Leading bridge builder, John Gibb & Son of Aberdeen, won the Almond Valley Contract with a quote of £147, 669 and set to work on their Herculean task in February 1839.

(The company made a loss of £40, 000).

Over the next 3 years, the entire route echoed to an army of men, thunderous explosions and constant clanging of picks and shovels. In the nick of time before the Railway Company’s deadline, the River Avon Viaduct’s last arch completed, the contractor treated his 160 workmen to a splendid dinner in Linlithgow Town Hall.

Down the line, the Polmont section of track finished too, and great celebrations ended with “a merry dance on the green to the strains of bagpipes”.

But the Railway Directors high hopes of a July 1841 completion hit the buffers as other sections of line went unfinished.

Penalty clause now kicking in, the Railway Directors complained to the Almond Valley Viaduct contractor that works were falling behind schedule.

In reply, a letter from John Gibb & Son’s Broxburn office said, “At present we have 350 workmen and 25 horses employed on the different cuttings and tunnel on the line – 80 masons, 100 labourers, 18 joiners, 8 blacksmiths and 20 horses employed on the viaducts and bridges besides nearly 150 men with a corresponding number of horses employed in quarrying stone for the viaducts and bridges. This force you will see is not small and will be rapidly increased in the course of a very short time”.

The Directors, whilst reassuring the shareholders, urged the contractor to work at night, by “torchlight”. The contractor’s claim for more money for overcoming unforeseen obstructions, unfavourable weather and doing night work cut no ice.

On the workmen toiled through December and the New Year’s Day edition of the Scotsman, 1842, reports the viaduct’s arches finished, though the banks still incomplete, with hundreds of workmen working furiously.

With huge sighs of relief all round, and the last sweat-lashed shovel flung aside, 18th February 1842 marked the opening ceremony of the Edinburgh to Glasgow Railway. At 1pm a steam locomotive pulling 52 carriages loaded with invited guests arrived at Haymarket from Glasgow, then

this train, and another 52-carriage steam locomotive, laden with the Edinburgh contingent – more excited shareholders and invited guests – 1100 people in all – set off triumphantly for Queen Street and a grand banquet. Schools had a holiday and along the line, people waved and cheered this big, loud, newfangled kid on the block.

Full steam ahead? Not a bad way to start the New Year!

The eastern section is made up of 36 ashlarfaced (prepared stonework, dres segmental masonry arches, each sed or cut) with a 15.2m span, and up to 21.3m .

The western section has 7 archhigh es, and largest arch bridges the A89 the central .

It has a span of 20.1m, with 3 arches 15.2m span on either side. Strengtheningof work was carried out in the 1950s and 1988 .

e are responsible for the restoration of our lives - no one else. We will all come up against hardships and troubled times which will introduce us to self-doubt, confusion and for some they may feel their lives have been completely discombobulated.

During these trying times take heart.

Recognise there is nothing happening in your life that hasn’t been put there to help you clean up and clean out all of that which is within you and surrounding you that does not serve your highest good. It is wakening you up to who or what is holding you back from living a much greater life than you are presently living.

Notice it is usually in our darkest hour a strength is born within us that we didn’t know was there until we were confronted with adversity.

Know and trust when adversity strikes, you are being led to a happier destiny. Learn to let go and allow your life to unfold as it should. Trust there is a Universal Intelligence that can see the bigger picture for your life. This Intelligence will guide you, protect you and sustain you … if you let it. It will lead you onto a path in life that will be more peaceful, joyful and happier – if you let it.

Putting the flesh on the bones!

Family History Column

M

any researchers decide that once they have the bare bones of their tree, with names, dates and occupations, they want to find out more about the lives that their ancestors led.

There are many archives available for researching which will help you do this for example • The Valuation Rolls will tell you about the homes that they lived in.

• If your ancestor was a pauper there may be surviving records of their application to enter the Poor House.

• Fatal accident enquiries – my article last month mentioned the information that I learned about Kenneth MacKenzie.

One of the saddest stories in my tree was revealed when I decided to do a bit more investigation into my 4 x Great Grandfather David Kennedy. The Old Parish Records and Statutory Records told me that David was born in 1776 in Ayrshire; he was a gamekeeper and died in Wiston in Lanarkshire in 1855. His death certificate told me he had been married twice and he had married his second wife in 1837 following the death of my 4 x Great Grandmother Grizzel Purdie.

I discovered that his second wife Marion Baillie had died in Millholme House in Musselburgh in 1866. In those days Millholme House was an Asylum and a search of the archives revealed the most fascinating and sad document concerning Marion.

The document was written in 1862 and was an “application to the general board of lunacy to grant transfer of a patient from one asylum to another.”

Marion had been admitted to the Glasgow Royal Lunatic Asylum, Gartnavel on the 29th January 1842, eight months after the birth of her daughter, also called Marion - she was 42 years of age. The transfer paper has 16 pieces of information, which were filled in by the Inspector of the Poor and then a medical statement written by a Doctor agreeing to the transfer from Glasgow to Musselburgh.

I must admit to going through a wide range of emotions when I read the transfer papers from shock to anger to great sadness. This is why I always say to people who want to start researching their family tree that you must be prepared for what you may find, you may not like it but you cannot change it.

The document stated that Marion was very weak minded, subject to occasional bouts of excitement and delusion, she was in good bodily health, but frequently states that people are trying to kill her daughter. She was not a danger to others, not suicidal and the supposed cause of her condition... “Bad treatment by her husband.”

I had certainly found out more about the lives my ancestors led, I am assuming that Marion was also suffering from post natal depression and I know that today she would have been given all the support and help that she needed, and I am pretty sure that would not have included locking her away for 24 years!

A hike at Hillend

A

s winter draws in my mind turns to the possibilities of skiing in Scotland and if recent winters are anything to go by a few good runs at Hillend on snow are a possibility.

When skiing there, the view of the city never fails to impress and I always contemplate a good walk over the hills beyond the skiing area. Walking in this part of the Pentlands can be made easy or more arduous depending on whether you decide to opt for the chairlift to make the first part of the ascent or head on up on foot and of course whether your opt for the longer or the shorter route.

Either way, a walk on the Hillend trail can begin at the lower car park of the Hillend Country Park or up at the Midlothian Snowsports Centre car park. Encumbered with children we opted for the chairlift but if you are counting on this as your method up, it is best to call ahead and check the chair is running - any hint of a strong breeze and it’ll be closed.

If however you want to walk, set out from the lower car park and follow the signs for ‘Capital View Walk’ which will head up on the left side of the ski area.

From the upper car park, the path starts to the left of the buildings and heads up the grassy slopes by the side of the ski lifts.

The path continues until you come to another path and fence running across the hill from the top of the lifts. Again keep to the left as the path runs parallel to the fence and you will soon reach a stile.

If you have taken the chairlift, you will come to the same stile after disembarking. Over the stile and the path zig-zags up the hillside until you reach the summit of Caerketton Hill. Stop and take in the panoramic views across the 30

city, to Bass Rock in the east, Ben Lomond to the west, Fife and the Ochills to the north and the Lammermuir Hills to the southeast. Of this view, Robert Louis Stevenson said, “...there is something in the view that spirits up the blood and puts you in the vein for cheerful labour.”

After this the path deteriorates as it descends slightly before heading across to Allermuir Hill where there is a trig point and indicator naming all the hills around you. Again the views are spectacular.

Views enjoyed, retrace your steps and take the grassy path heading down to your left. You will see the path that you crossed on your ascent. Pick up that path and follow for a while until it splits. Take the right fork and soon you’ll be back on the summit of Caerketton Hill.

The path starts to level out and become a well trodden farm track running behind the Lothianburn golf course. You’ll come to stile which you cross over and then make your way down to the ski centre again.

The distance is around 3 miles and depending on whether children are involved and whether you take the chair lift up, should take anywhere between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours. The saving grace is that you end up at the ski centre where the café offers decent coffee, warming hot chocolate and tasty snacks or even lunch. You could of course indulge in a little skiing while you’re there.

I always think of this walk as a winter walk, probably because I head to Hillend when the snows come, but also because the views across Edinburgh are particularly beautiful in the low winter sunlight. Of course it is an ideal walk at any time of year - but as always when walking in the hills, remember to go prepared with gear for all weather conditions as four seasons in one day are more than a probability!

December Recipe and Food Notes

n winter the kitchen is the heart of the house. It is a living place. Kettles sing, pots bubble visitors come and sit and drink coffee. Children use the kitchen table to draw at, paint at, model with play-dough and help with cooking.

They hang about waiting for bowls to lick out.”

Remove the ham to an oven proof baking tin and, placing it skin side uppermost ,strip off the rind. It will come away easily but will be hot.

This slightly rosy picture is from “Through the Kitchen Window” by Susan Hill. It will serve as an introduction for December cooking in the hope that this year will be satisfying and relaxed.

The impossible image of Christmas with the family all in new clothes, the house decorated to the nines, and tables full of posh restaurant-style food should not intimidate you! Relax, enjoy the season, plan ahead and take comfort in the the thought that the days are about to start lengthening again.

Cook double your normal favourite dishes and freeze half of them. Or you could cook some winter warmers made from usual ingredients but with a little extra twist and then bring them out at busy times. Try Bean and Chorizo Casserole, Braised Chicken with Thyme and Parsnip, Salmon and Leek Filo Pie or Cardamom lamb Hot-pot. When thoroughly defrosted, any of these dishes will take the same time to be hot as it will take to cook the potatoes and set the table.

Here are some seasonal receipts which can be offered in celebration to be shared.

Glazed Ham You can cook either smoked or unsmoked ham joints in the following way.

Nowadays, because of milder curing methods, there is no need to soak the ham before you cook it. If this is the first time you have cooked a ham do not start with a whole one. They weigh about 6-8kgs and are a challenge to cope with normal domestic utensils.

Start with a 2-3kg small joint. Total cooking times is based on 40 minutes per kilo.

You will also need: 1 onion, Bay leaf, 6-10 cloves 2 carrots, 2 sticks celery, 1 orange Put the ham in a large pan, cover with cold water and add the flavourings. Bring to the boil slowly and simmer for half the estimated cooking time, about one hour.

For baking you will need : Cloves 1 litre orange juice Mustard , grainy or smooth as you prefer.

Golden syrup Method With the tip of a sharp knife score the fat in a diamond pattern. Stick a clove in the middle of each diamond. Spread mustard and a good layer of syrup all over the fat.

Pour the orange juice into the pan and add a little water, so the liquid comes at least 2 inches up the side of the joint. Seal the whole roasting tin in a double layer of foil and bake at 160oC for another hour. Baste with the juices a couple of times. To finish, take off the foil and bake for another 5-10 minutes until the top looks golden.

The ham can be carved and eaten hot, served with mashed potatoes and broad beans. Or keep it to go cold and eat with watercress, chicory and orange salad, baked potatoes and chutney.

Any leftovers can be used for pasta bakes, sandwiches or potato, apple and ham bake.

Mincemeat Fruit cake.

This is an easy fruity cake and is much lighter than a Christmas Cake.

150gm butter cut into small pieces 150gm pale soft brown sugar 2 large eggs 225gm self-raising flour 225gm good mincemeat 100gm each sultanas and currants 1 whole sharp apple grated

Cocoa for rolling the truffles

In a large bowl cream the butter and sugar together. Add all the other ingredients and mix thoroughly. Line an 8 inch cake tin with baking parchment. Pile the cake mixture in and flatten the top.

Decorate if you like with split almonds.

Bake at 160oC till a skewer comes out clean, about 1 ¼ hours.

This cake can be white iced but it does not need it. Tie a ribbon round it to look festive.

Lastly an indulgence!

Method Melt the chocolate with the liqueur in a bowl set over a pan of hot water. Stir well till smooth. Add the butter, stirring till it has melted in.

Then add the sugar and the ground nuts.

Leave in a cool place to set.

Roll into about 24 balls. Dust with cocoa and put in a paper case if you have some.

Kept cool, the truffles should last about 2 weeks….unless you eat them or give them as presents.

Chocolate truffles 175gm dark chocolate, I prefer Lindt 70%.

If you use milk chocolate the result will be sweeter.

2 tablespoons liqueur, orange or ginger are delicious, as is brandy or whisky.

40gm unsalted butter 50gm icing sugar 50gm ground nuts. Chose hazel, almond or walnuts to compliment the liqueur.
