PAM WARDELL: Author of A Very Private Affair – a Soviet Dissident’s “English Wife”

As part of the Pentlands Book Festival, four local authors will speak about their work at Colinton Library on 30th November. Come along and meet Pam and Lesley, as well as Dorothy Baird and Geoff Akers.

If you enjoy the television programme “Who Do You Think You Are?”, you will want to hear author Pam Wardell tell how she, through a series of coincidences, unearthed the story of the love affair between her enigmatic aunt Speranza and a prominent Soviet writer, Boris Pilniak.

Pam’s book A Very Private Affair – a Soviet Dissident’s “English Wife” was published in September 2016. It was a labour of love for the retired BBC producer, who had happened upon a stack of silk ribbon-bound letters, written in Russian, while clearing her deceased aunt’s flat.

The beautiful book, full of family photographs and memorabilia, tells the story of the love between Speranza (affectionately known as Pica) and Boris. It also sheds light on what it was like for Russians like Pam’s mother and her siblings who fled their country after the Revolution. “It is a memoir for our family,” says Pam, “but will also be of interest to those studying Russian history.

Its release is timely, because this year is the centenary of the Revolution.”

It was 1995 when the Colinton-based author found the letters, but they remained in her loft until after she retired from the BBC in

2001. But at that point she formed her own company, doing drama workshops for children – she had been a drama teacher before became a producer. “So it wasn’t until 2013 that the real work on the book started,” she says. “I made a pact with myself that I would complete it before I turned 70, and I just made it!”

Pam believes her aunt’s story is one that “had to be told”. And yet finding a publisher who would produce the book, and in a format she was happy with, was very difficult. In the end she set up her own publishing company, Howard Press (www. howardpress.net - See below).

On 30 November Pam will be telling the fascinating story of the secret love affair. She will also describe how she found an appropriate format for her “hybrid” book, and established her own publishing company. “My talented graphic designer helped me put together a memoir that is beautifully illustrated with the materials of that time,” she says.

Pam learned that the more you find out about your past, the more it impacts on your understanding of the past – and the more it impacts on your future. “Researching your family history fires your imagination!” she comments. “The journey that led to this book has been a great pleasure for me.

“I hope others will be inspired to have a go. You never know what you will find in your loft.”

Lesley Fraser will talk about her book, Cavalier Chronicles, which describes her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s first three years as a pet and show dog. “Actually it was written by Rufus,” she says, “and translated into human by me.”

Rufus did quite well as a show dog, eventually making it all the way to the big one, Crufts, where he won a prize. He is nine now and a bit deaf, so he has retired. However, his brother Reuben is still showing. “It’s good fun,” says Lesley, “and a very sociable activity.”

The author first spoke at Colinton Library three years ago, when the book was published. She was accompanied by five of her dogs on that occasion, and will probably have a couple with her in November. After all, it’s a dog’s story.

As a family planning nurse, Lesley was asked to write a number of articles. Later she worked for Radio Forth and eventually was teamed with Andy, responding to calls on the phone-in programme, the Open Line. She worked with the station for 19 years, and ran their charity, raising funds for children with special needs. “This is a cause close to my heart,” she comments, “because my sister had cerebral palsy and died very suddenly when she was just 29.”

Lesley has been an agony aunt, a TV presenter and a ski instructor. For awhile she ran her own business, supplying handmade wedding and ball gowns. “I take any opportunity that comes along,” she says. “If it doesn’t work out, what is the worst that can happen? I can always do something else.

I just go for it.”

Currently she works as an Independent Celebrant, writing and delivering life ceremonies.

These can be anything from baby naming events to funerals. “I do a lot of writing for this job,” she says. “And my hobby, writing, encourages me in my job. So it’s the perfect arrangement.”

INVESTMENT TRUSTS An Investment Trust is a company, listed on the stock exchange, which can pool together your money and the money of thousands of other small investors to buy shares in other companies. With Investment Trusts you can spread a small stake across a large portfolio of different shares and this spreads the risk you take with your money.

Why Are They Not Well-known?Investment Trusts have been very restricted in how they can advertise their own shares. This is unfortunate, as many have consistent excellent performance over the last 90 years. The main consideration is to select the Trust that best suits your individual needs and profile. They range considerably in terms of risk and style so careful analysis of the trust should be considered before investing.

Can I put them in an ISA? You can protect your investment from tax by wrapping it in an Individual Savings Account (ISA) allowing you to invest up to ÂŁ20,000 in this tax year. You can also save regularly every month to build up a capital sum through an Investment Trust savings scheme.

The most important thing when deciding to invest in the stock market is to ensure you obtain good independent advice before you act. Sector, volatility, diversification and valuation are all vital considerations in choosing a suitable Trust. Investment Trusts are long term investments, intended for five years or more and you need to be sure you have sufficient capital aside for emergencies, so that any investment can really be allowed time to work. Konect’s “Thought for the Month” contributor Pat Banfill works part-time as a Pastoral Assistant for St. Mungo’s Church, Balerno.

Her hobbies include gardening, hill walking and singing in the Heriot Watt Choir.

She and her husband Phil live in Balerno, and have two adult children and four grandchildren.

Before Pat Banfill and her family moved to Balerno in 1994, she was a social worker and charity worker in Liverpool. “We had been there for 22 years,” she says, “so moving to Scotland when Phil got a new job at Heriot Watt University was a big change for us.”

She worked with the Church of Scotland’s social work department (now called CrossReach), before accepting a new role with St. Mungo’s. “Then, instead of driving all over Scotland for my work, I just walked into our spare bedroom every day,” she comments.

“The rector, Malcolm Round, told me he wanted me to just be myself,” says Pat. “So I spent a little while trying to work out what I was supposed to do.

In the meantime, because I had been a trainer as well as a social worker in the past, I put on all sorts of courses. Topics included leadership, managing money, parenting, marriage, discipleship and more.

I ran these courses up until about four or five years ago, when I reduced my hours.”

Today Pat’s job focuses on one-to-one work with people who have particular life challenges. She goes into the office one day per week, and then chooses how to spend the rest of the week. “My work is my life really,” she explains. “What I like to do is to help people live life well.”

Pat says that the main challenges she used to see were with people in their adult relationships, marriage, raising children and managing money.

But increasingly these days there seem to be more people with work-related problems – not enough work or else too much work. And mental health issues seem to be on the increase too.

For many years Pat and her colleague Bill Thompson provided a service known as “The Listening Ear” to students at Balerno High School (BHS). “It meant a lot to the young people to have an adult’s undivided attention for 40 minutes each week,” says Pat. “They talked about such things as difficulties in the family, eating disorders, anxiety, depression and self-harm.” This service has now been replaced by a formal relationship between BHS and “Be Me” counselling service, run by St Mungo’s Wellness Centre.

One activity that Pat obviously enjoys is baking once a week with a group of P2s at a Wester Hailes primary school. “We make some cakes together and then they take some home, along with the recipe,” says Pat. “We have good talks about sharing and about family relationships.

“People are endlessly interesting. Since I entered social work, I’ve never been bored. I’ve been challenged, and I’ve found things difficult – but I have never been bored.”

Chocolate and orange are perfect flavour partners and these lovely individual puddings taste delicious served warm with custard or cream.

Ingredients: 3 small clementines or satsumas, thinly sliced 175g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 175g caster sugar 3 large eggs, beaten 125g self-raising flour 50g cocoa powder, sifted 1 tbsp fresh orange juice 2 tsp orange zest Custard or cream, to serve

Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour 30 mins Tip: You can cook the puddings a few hours before serving then simply re-heat in the microwave. Turn out onto a microwave plate and reheat three at a time on High for 30-45 seconds.

Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. Butter and line the bases of 6 x 175ml metal pudding basins with circles of baking parchment.

Place a slice of clementine or satsuma in the base of each basin and press 2-3 slices around the sides.

Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and, using an electric mixer, beat until pale and fluffy.

Gradually beat in the eggs then sift over the flour and cocoa powder and fold into the creamed mixture with the orange juice and zest.

Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and cover each with a square of pleated, buttered foil, scrunching it tightly around the sides of each basin. Transfer to a roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water from a kettle to reach halfway up the sides of the basins.

Bake for 1 hour, until the puddings have risen and are firm to the touch, and a skewer inserted through the foil of one of the puddings comes out clean. Turn out and serve with custard or cream.

Families often find themselves under pressure when the children are young.

Maybe life is harder than parents anticipated or difficult things have happened.

Research shows that there are common patterns of behaviour amongst couples in the early stages of their relationship, which distinguish couples that do well from those who do less well. These are around bad habits (point scoring, thinking the worst, opting out and putting down), good habits (showing affection, humour and interest and using love languages well) and father involvement (with mum, the children and wider family life).

Parenting in a sensitive way, being responsive to a child’s emotional needs and recognising children’s own thoughts and feelings helps to build a secure attachment between children and parents. A secure attachment is a strong protective factor, which reduces the risk of poor developmental outcomes for the children.

So relationship support is very important for families, some of which can be found locally through parent and baby/toddler groups, baby cafés, parenting and marriage courses and counselling for individuals and couples.
