Hello neighbours We love producing the December issue of the Konect Directory – lots of seasonal graphics on the advertisements, great offers and ideas for readers and lots going on locally

What’s in a name?

the lairds of Lymphoy, Woodhall & Ravelrig

I

f Jane Austen had been writing about the social manoeuvring of the gentry 200 years earlier than she did, there could be few better households than the gentry of Balerno, Currie and Juniper Green to act as inspiration.

Mrs Heriot of Lymphoy House, on the south side of the Water of Leith midway between Balerno and Currie, is our Mrs Bennet of Pride & Prejudice, eager to dispatch each of her 3 daughters to a “good marriage” with the local landowners, while Austen’s Lady Catherine de Bourgh is very ably matched by the wealth, assumed good standing and unbridled social ambitions of two Midlothian families from Colinton and Dalmeny who collide in marriage and end up back on our doorstep at the small estate of Woodhall in Juniper Green.

The stage for this real life plot in the 16th century parish of Currie was far from simple for the ambitious mother whose daughters snared their wealthy neighbours; neighbours whose sights were of ongoing family wealth, good name and stability. Our local area really delivered, behind the gentrified front doors of these ‘respectable’ families; more like McPride & Prejudice on steroids.

The area, with close proximity to Edinburgh, offered networking in Edinburgh, with its lucrative positions in the law which were often coupled with a lengthy spell as member of parliament. Fathers lined up easy ‘jobs’ for their sons, so that the nearby, but modest, country estates could supplement their income of rents. Scotland had its own courts, its own royal house (we shared a king but were still a separate kingdom) and best of all we had our own Royal Mint. Edinburgh’s mint offered positions such as the Master of the Mint which were a ‘sinecure’ (an office that involves little or no responsibility or active service, but provides a prestigious job title and an easy salary).

So back to Lymphoy; Mrs Heriot’s eldest daughter Agnes married into the Foulis family, owners of the Colinton estate, and for the next four generations each Colinton laird sat as the local MP. Mrs Heriot’s second daughter Helen snared the eminent lawyer Thomas Craig, who bought the Riccarton estate and

whose family continued to gain prominence becoming the dominant Currie lairds. Her third daughter Joan married an Edinburgh magistrate, John Laurie.

Agnes Heriots’ new young family clearly had further ambition. Her second son bought the small Ravelston Estate and the next two generations shored up the family coffers by holding the position of Master of the Mint.

Whenever minting occurred a duty was levied by the King to cover the expenses of coining, and to leave a surplus for the King’s own use.

Profits were divided between the King and the Master of the Mint - the King’s being accountable while the profit for the Master was not accountable to anyone.

So times at the House of Ravelston were good; the Scottish covenanters in 1637 had wrested control of Scotland from the weak king Charles 1st and started zealously minting coins to fund their army. When the third laird, John Foulis, inherited his family name was secure – or was it ? He married into a family of even greater ambition. The Primrose family were on the fast track; his father-in-law, the newly knighted Sir Archibald, was taking every opportunity to get established. He’d bought his title and was feverishly taking sides, even as King Charles I was beheaded, to increase his influence and wealth. Archibald almost

lost his head too, but when Charles II achieved The Restoration of the monarchy he was back in favour; first he bought his estate at Dalmeny and then a second estate, Dunipace, near Stirling. He then decided to hedge his bets for the future of his family name by settling Dunipace on the sons of his eldest daughter on condition that they changed their name to Primrose.

This meant that the now Sir John Foulis Baronet of Ravelston would see his (also purchased) new title, when his eldest son inherited, become assumed into the name of Primrose - hardly the dynastic solution he wanted. Sir John’s knightly nose was out of joint; he now needed to replenish his landholdings with a portfolio of country estates that would continue his family name.

Accessing the Foulis coffers he bought Bonally estate in 1700, and a year later the Woodhall estate in Juniper Green, so that his second son, William, became William Foulis of Woodhall.

Such family manoeuvres could now hardly be matched in the area. With his Foulis cousins in Colinton, his own family with both Bonaly and now in Juniper Green, and another Foulis, his uncle, owning Ratho, the extended family had got the country seats to the western side of Edinburgh pretty well covered!

These dynastic dodgem-car antics along the Water of Leith might have now settled down but for another John, this time John Maitland.

Again the curse of Currie county was ready to create some name turbulence as his time as a dignified laird in Balerno unfolded. John Maitland’s father had become General of the Mint (a position even more senior to Master of the Mint) and had also had John’s elder brother appointed alongside him as joint General of the Mint. The Maitland’s ambition played higher than even the Primroses. His father’s elder brother kept favour in the English court so successfully that he was finally created the Duke of Lauderdale by Charles II and thwarted Archibald Primrose’s expanding ambitions north of the border.

Young John Maitland, however, kept his head down as being a younger son of a younger son he would need to establish his own fiefdom.

He was not to know that both his Ducal Uncle

and his elder brother would leave no male heirs. Aged 25 John became an advocate and bought Ravelrig house and estate by Balerno.

A few months later he purchased a baronetcy to become Sir John Maitland of Ravelrig to further establish his credentials. Life in Balerno, just upstream from Lymphoy, should have then remained convenient and simple but just three years after becoming a baronet John’s father, and other staff at the mint, were charged with ‘malversions’ amounting to over £8 million in today’s currency. Nevertheless John soon became the local MP but the year he was elected in 1685 aged 30, his mother died and left him her property so he too had to change his name becoming instead Sir John Lauder of Haltoun MP. Despite his father facing trial and being charged to repay £2million John still managed to add an impressive Renaissance style east front to the house in 1696.

One name change behind him, and despite a disgraced father who has now lost his position at the Mint, John’s legal rise continues and at 34 he assumes a new title as a law lord. He becomes both Lord Ravelrig, (because another John Lauder has at the same time also become a law lord), and he also returns as an MP, this time as a Maitland - Sir John Maitland of Ravelrig MP. It is only a matter of time when a third name change is upon John when his father dies and he takes over the estate at Haltoun becoming Lauder of Haltoun in lieu of Maitland of Ravelrig. John’s elder brother then dies aged 42, so now John Lauder of Haltoun becomes John Maitland again, when he succeeds as the 5th Earl of Lauderdale.

He is soon at the helm of the mint as its General, keeping up the family tradition.

Further Renaissance additions occur at Haltoun and again John’s son, the 6th Earl gets the sinecure as General of the Mint in 1714 until he too is dismissed in 1734. No new coins were struck after 1709 but a full complement of Mint officials remain in place until 1814.

airtech of Currie are celebrating 20 years of trading this year.

As part of their celebrations, a charity open evening was held in November to raise funds for Children in Need. The evening was well attended and the team were delighted to raise a total of ÂŁ471.52 on the night! Local organisations and people who generously provided raffle prizes included Mark McGill Butcher, The Riccarton Arms, The Coffee Mill, Currie Youth Club, as well as residents Audrey Gatenby, Eileen Craw, Mrs Beatson and Linda Markey. Mercure Edinburgh Hotel also donated a prize, and Gary Mackay donated a signed Hearts book.

The salon has recently been fully refurbished incorporating a new beauty room, The Beauty Box, and the team are delighted to welcome Hazel Gordon, beautician, to the business.

A daunder up Dalmahoy Hill

inter walking can mean braving all sorts of weather from crunchy walks in frost and snow, the sun making the ground sparkle like diamante while the cold takes your breath away, to muddy hikes in the pouring rain and howling gales. I prefer not to go too far when the weather is inclement so a local walk is just the ticket.

always amazes me about Scotland. Whilst contemplating the view down towards Kirknewton, I couldn’t help but wonder about the devastation that has been wrought on this once beautiful landscape by the quarrying that has taken place.

There are many walks you can take heading out from Balerno; you will find quiet back roads you can wander along or if you are feeling braver you can head over the fields and hills. Having driven along the Lang Whang west from Balerno many a time I had always noticed the ‘footpath to Kirknewton’ sign but had not found the time to venture over it.

It is a relatively easy path of follow - simply head across the fields staying to the edges and work your way up to the summit of Dalmahoy Hill which is ahead of you. It is a fairly steady incline - nothing too onerous but it is muddy - particularly at this time of year - but generally at most times of year!

Once on the summit - it is time to enjoy the view. I had read quite a bit about this hill and the secrets it holds so it was good to finally make it here. A rather wet and windy day didn‘t make for easy walking but the view was still good from the top despite the weather - something that

However, putting that to one side I was enjoying the fresh air, the exercise and the history that still emanates from this old hill fort. There is a modern trig point, but the remains of the fort (probably Iron Age) are also visible even to the untrained eye. The fort would have occupied an area of around 400x100m surrounded by stone walling and terracing and was probably an offshoot of the larger hill fort on the adjacent Kaimes Hill.

You can see the obvious circular shape that was built into the natural shape of the summit. Dalmahoy Hill is a craggy hill (not the correct geological terminology I am sure) and it therefore seems fitting that you can see quite clearly Arthur’s Seat and Salisbury Crags to the East and also Cairnpapple Hill (one of my favourite places regular readers will no doubt know) to the West.

You can head back the way you came from the top or you can venture down the other side towards Kirknewton. Heading down you will see the old Quarry works at the bottom of the hill until you reach a muddy

farm track which ultimately parallels the Long Dalmahoy Road before coming out on the corner of that road by the bridge over the railway track.

You then have a choice - don’t cross the bridge but head along the road to the left towards Kirknewton or turn right, over the bridge and back along the Long Dalmahoy Road towards Balerno. I love the views you get from the Kirknewton road - all the way to Corstorphine Hill and Arthur’s Seat (on a clear night it is possible to watch the Festival and Hogmanay fireworks from here). The road meanders along past Easter Newton farm, where it turns sharply right and then it’s a left hand turn into the village. If you time it right, you can catch ‘the blue bus’ back to Balerno.

If you are planning on walking back, the slightly shorter way is probably over the bridge and along the back road towards Currie, turning right at the first junction

which takes you back up to the Lanark Road. I didn’t do the full circle but if you did, it would be a fair day’s walk and you would earn some refreshment at the end.

What is great is that you don’t have to look too hard to find a really good walk on the doorstep. Just wrap up and step outside and enjoy the fresh air - bad weather or not!

etting your roof repaired and maintained can be a stressful experience – there are many roofers around and many “cowboys.” When you’re investing money in repairs and improvements to your home, how do you ensure that the people doing the work are in fact appropriately qualified, will do a competent job and will provide the correct guarantees?

December Recipe and Food Notes

n winter the kitchen is the heart of the house. It is a living place. Kettles sing, pots bubble visitors come and sit and drink coffee. Children use the kitchen table to draw at, paint at, model with play-dough and help with cooking.

They hang about waiting for bowls to lick out.”

Remove the ham to an oven proof baking tin and, placing it skin side uppermost ,strip off the rind. It will come away easily but will be hot.

This slightly rosy picture is from “Through the Kitchen Window” by Susan Hill. It will serve as an introduction for December cooking in the hope that this year will be satisfying and relaxed.

The impossible image of Christmas with the family all in new clothes, the house decorated to the nines, and tables full of posh restaurant-style food should not intimidate you! Relax, enjoy the season, plan ahead and take comfort in the the thought that the days are about to start lengthening again.

Cook double your normal favourite dishes and freeze half of them. Or you could cook some winter warmers made from usual ingredients but with a little extra twist and then bring them out at busy times. Try Bean and Chorizo Casserole, Braised Chicken with Thyme and Parsnip, Salmon and Leek Filo Pie or Cardamom lamb Hot-pot. When thoroughly defrosted, any of these dishes will take the same time to be hot as it will take to cook the potatoes and set the table.

Here are some seasonal receipts which can be offered in celebration to be shared.

Glazed Ham You can cook either smoked or unsmoked ham joints in the following way.

Nowadays, because of milder curing methods, there is no need to soak the ham before you cook it. If this is the first time you have cooked a ham do not start with a whole one. They weigh about 6-8kgs and are a challenge to cope with normal domestic utensils.

Start with a 2-3kg small joint. Total cooking times is based on 40 minutes per kilo.

You will also need: 1 onion, Bay leaf, 6-10 cloves 2 carrots, 2 sticks celery, 1 orange Put the ham in a large pan, cover with cold water and add the flavourings. Bring to the boil slowly and simmer for half the estimated cooking time, about one hour.

For baking you will need : Cloves 1 litre orange juice Mustard , grainy or smooth as you prefer.

Golden syrup Method With the tip of a sharp knife score the fat in a diamond pattern. Stick a clove in the middle of each diamond. Spread mustard and a good layer of syrup all over the fat.

Pour the orange juice into the pan and add a little water, so the liquid comes at least 2 inches up the side of the joint. Seal the whole roasting tin in a double layer of foil and bake at 160oC for another hour. Baste with the juices a couple of times. To finish, take off the foil and bake for another 5-10 minutes until the top looks golden.

The ham can be carved and eaten hot, served with mashed potatoes and broad beans. Or keep it to go cold and eat with watercress, chicory and orange salad, baked potatoes and chutney.

Any leftovers can be used for pasta bakes, sandwiches or potato, apple and ham bake.

Mincemeat Fruit cake.

This is an easy fruity cake and is much lighter than a Christmas Cake.

In a large bowl cream the butter and sugar together. Add all the other ingredients and mix thoroughly. Line an 8 inch cake tin with baking parchment. Pile the cake mixture in and flatten the top.

Decorate if you like with split almonds.

Bake at 160oC till a skewer comes out clean, about 1 ¼ hours.

This cake can be white iced but it does not need it. Tie a ribbon round it to look festive.

Lastly an indulgence!

Chocolate truffles 175gm dark chocolate, I prefer Lindt 70%.

If you use milk chocolate the result will be sweeter.

2 tablespoons liqueur, orange or ginger are delicious, as is brandy or whisky.

40gm unsalted butter 50gm icing sugar 50gm ground nuts. Chose hazel, almond or walnuts to compliment the liqueur.

Cocoa for rolling the truffles Method Melt the chocolate with the liqueur in a bowl set over a pan of hot water. Stir well till smooth. Add the butter, stirring till it has melted in.

Then add the sugar and the ground nuts.

Leave in a cool place to set.

Roll into about 24 balls. Dust with cocoa and put in a paper case if you have some.

Kept cool, the truffles should last about 2 weeks….unless you eat them or give them as presents.

W

ith the festive period nearly upon us, I would like to thank the Konect for giving me this opportunity to send a message to my constituents.

This time of year gives us the chance to reflect upon the previous twelve months, to remember the good times and the bad and to think about how we can make next year better. It is also the time that we think of loved ones who are no longer with us, who live abroad or who serve in the armed forces and are posted overseas. The last year has brought many challenges for households throughout the local area and I hope that the festive period will give you a chance both to relax and celebrate.

Since my election as the constituency MSP in May 2011 many of you have sought my help and advice on a wide variety of concerns and issues. If you have a problem please do not hesitate in contacting my office for assistance.

I have enjoyed being out and about in the constituency meeting local groups, visiting projects and talking to schools.

I hope all of you enjoy spending time with family and friends. It is a privilege to serve as your constituency MSP and on behalf of my staff members, Loraine and Stewart, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Guid New Year.

Balerno Christmas – 8th and 9th December

alerno will be buzzing on 8th and 9th December when the 3rd Balerno Christmas Tree Festival joins forces with the Balerno Christmas Farmers Market and ‘A Concert for Christmas’ with the Broxburn and Livingston Brass Band to form Balerno Christmas.

The logo for Balerno Christmas, specially designed by Balerno glass artist Liz Cull, is made up of the Star, for the true meaning of Christmas, the Christmas Tree, as the recognised symbol of our Christmas season and a ribbon drawing the community together. The whole community really is involved in events which are organised by Balerno Parish Church and Balerno Village Trust. There are more than 35 trees in the Christmas Tree Festival each decorated by a local group, organisation and business. You’ll find a Konect tree there along with trees from a wide range of groups such as Balerno Post Office, Balerno Scouts, Pentland Singers, the Guides and Brownies and Balerno Music Festival; you name it, it’ll be there. So make sure you call in at the St Joseph Centre, Balerno on Saturday 8th – 10.00am to 3.00pm and 6.00pm to 7.00pm - and Sunday 9th – 11.00am to 3.00pm. Entry is free but the organisers invite you to make a donation towards the cost of refurbishing the St Joseph Centre.

The Balerno Christmas Farmer’s Market is also definitely not to be

missed. It’s open between 9.00am to 1.00pm, and the stalls will be all dressed up for Christmas. You’ll also be able to join the carol singers in Main Street at 10.00am and follow them round as they sing amongst Christmas trees too.

And in the evening you can visit the Christmas Trees again before going on to the Concert for Christmas, but hurry, tickets for the Broxburn and Livingston Brass Band will go like hot cakes. Tickets £7.50, from Balerno Parish Church Office and Balerno Post Office; (under 16’s £3.00 & under 5’s free) Balerno Christmas is here; be part of it!

Colinton’s Christmas on the Corner A Winter Affair

VE Group’s second annual outdoor winter event, Christmas on the Corner, is scheduled to take place in Colinton Village on the evening of Thursday, December 13th from 7pm to 9pm.

Office (toilet facilities too!) at the top of Spylaw Street. MDA Studio next door will also offer their hospitality.

We are very pleased that St. David’s Brass, a newly promoted 2nd section community brass band, will be joining us to kick-start the event in style. The band played an important role at CVE Group’s Art in the Park this year and will no doubt add greatly to the festive atmosphere.

Of course the village pubs and eateries will be open as usual for the evening.

Please come along to participate, along with a variety of musicians and carol singers, while enjoying some complimentary mulled wine and roasted chestnuts.
