This issue touches on a huge range of topics and activities, all rooted in the local area, which we can get involved with thanks to the energy, care and expertise of local people. From volunteering opportunities on the Union Canal, the annual garden art exhibition at New Hopetoun, a local walk to explore and much more besides!

We’re just heading into the school summer holidays, and there is plenty going on locally over the summer for all the family.

Parking in the lay-by at the ‘Ratho’ sign marking the western edge of the village, I begin the walk uphill, stopping at intervals to enjoy the commanding view of the Edinburgh skyline, from the gentle sweep of Corstorphine Hill to the spires of the city. The Pentland panorama opens up to my right, with the crags of Dalmahoy Hill in the foreground. Just past the Scottish Water installation I cross the road and enter the woods to join the footpath which leads me through a narrow glade of beech and sycamore.

The path skirts the eastern edge of the wood and a viewpoint display helpfully depicts the features spread out before me. Reading the landscape on view tells a story of volcanoes long-extinct, their hard igneous rocks left standing proud above the surrounding land - from the ancient magmatic cores of North Berwick Law (28 miles away), Castle Rock and Arthur’s Seat arrayed along the horizon to the characteristic dome of Black Hill on my right, formed from solidified intruded magma that never made it to the surface.

The track soon switches to the west side of the wood and affords similarly far-reaching views. I can see right across West Lothian and the Forth Valley to the Ochils beyond and can even make out the profile of Ben Ledi and Ben Venue over 40 miles away. Tormain Hill on the outskirts of Ratho offers a gentle walk through attractive woodland, with splendid views of the surrounding countryside, yet also plays host to a surprising archaeological treasure dating back thousands of years.

vantage is a tale of the sedimentary, with the skyline being dominated by the Five Sisters Bing near West Calder and the Winchburgh Shale Bing. These man-made mountains of rust-coloured spent shale now stand monument to the world’s first oil boom, founded upon the oil-rich shales laid down in tropical coastal lagoons hundreds of millions of years ago, when what was to become West Lothian lay near the equator.

Towards the summit of the hill, Scots pine dominate the tree cover. I leave the main path, following a faint track to my left which leads me to the highest point. I swivel round to take in my surroundings. Ringed by these native pines, the place takes on a slightly mystical atmosphere.

It is here that I have found what I am looking for. On a few of the surrounding boulders of the outcrop are curious markings. One rock has several cup-shaped depressions each surrounded by a ring, and one of the cups has been further surrounded by three concentric arcs. The cup shape is repeated on other rocks nearby. This is ancient rock art, thought to date back to Neolithic times. These

characteristic cup-and-ring markings have been found at a number of sites across the UK, but no-one is quite sure of their meaning.

It is worth noting that one of the cup-marked rocks also has an arrow inscribed on it. This is not neolithic in origin but marks an ordnance survey triangulation reference point, added in the 19th century. Weathering and lichen have rendered the patterns less bold than they no doubt once were, such that they could be easily missed if you were not searching for them. However, they are best viewed in the early morning or evening when the low sun casts the patterns in contrasting light and shadow to dramatic effect.

Standing at this spot, with a hundred-mile expanse of central Scotland within my field of vision I can see why our ancient forebears might have chosen this spot to congregate, contemplate and make their mark. Gazing north through a gap in the pines I try to imagine the view as it would have been then and what might have been in their minds as they made their carvings.

I set off again and shortly reach the far end of the wood where. On the return leg of the walk the track passes through the pockmarked grounds of a rabbit warren then bears right, skirting round the edge of a wider apron of woodland on the lower east slope before rejoining the inward path.

More recent residents have recorded their presence too. ‘Sam woz ere’ announces the trunk of a large beech. By the scarring on the bark I estimate Sam passed through at least a couple of decades ago, having also selected a canvas of relative permanence, one of the largest and most imposing trees in the wood.

Thinking back to our ancient ancestors with their rock tools, then presently to my fingers on this keyboard, it occurs to me that perhaps we all strive to communicate in some way the same fundamental message - whether inscribed on rock, tree, or page….simply: “I was here”.

Whether assisting passengers during cruises, helping with boat operations, supporting fundraising activities, or providing administrative assistance, every volunteer plays an important role in creating a welcoming and enjoyable experience for guests.

No previous boating experience is required, as full training and ongoing support are provided. Volunteering with Seagull Trust Cruises Ratho branch offers many personal benefits. Volunteers can develop new skills, gain valuable experience, meet new people, and become part of a friendly and supportive team. Many volunteers also find the role highly rewarding, knowing that their contribution helps provide opportunities and experiences that many passengers would otherwise be unable to enjoy.

Listening to our HEAD AND HEART Decisions, decisions, life is full of them and sometimes we struggle to make them without constantly revisiting our choices and second guessing ourselves at every turn.

There is no doubt that making choices, big or small, can be difficult. When we feel torn and just can’t decide what to do, the best thing is to balance facts with our emotional intuition.

Sometimes the balance between the head (logic) and the heart (emotion) is challenging for many of us. The most effective approach is rarely a total reliance on head or heart but depends on using both.

Making head versus heart decisions means balancing logical facts with emotional intuition If we are sensitive and empathetic it’s likely that we already listen to our hearts and those gut feelings but, when life is hectic, it can be all too easy to lose balance. The most effective approach is rarely a complete surrender to one over the other. Our heart can be effective when deciding on matters of passion, core values and deep personal relationships and we can trust our minds for financial choices and decisions about our careers. However, neither should be trusted completely, acting on pure emotions or logic alone can lead to regret. True clarity comes from seeking a healthy balance between our rational minds and our hearts aligning both rather than silencing either.

Remembering to give equal space to our head and our heart and listening to all the evidence before making those decisions both big and small can lead to a better balance in all our lives.

The health takeaways of six different cooking and salad oils.

VEGETABLE: Considered healthier to cook with oil than butter, which is high in saturated fat. Vegetable oil, often made of rapeseed, has a high smoke point, making it suitable for cooking at high temperatures. The smoke point is when the fatty acids break down, releasing free radicals linked to cell damage.

RAPESEED: This oil contains high levels of heart-healthy unsaturated fats and is lower in saturated fats than any other oil. It may help reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease and is a good source of vitamin E. As with other oils, cold-pressed tends to be best for health.

SUNFLOWER: Look for a sunflower oil that’s high in monounsaturates, meaning it has more oleic acid, potentially beneficial in lowering cholesterol and heart disease risk.

It’s also rich in vitamin E and is versatile in the kitchen.

AVOCADO: Also high in oleic acid and vitamin E, avocado oil is good for dressing salads and cooking at high temperatures.

COCONUT: Coconut oil is high in saturated fats, so can contribute to high cholesterol.

While research has suggested it could treat Alzheimer's, more evidence is needed.

OLIVE OLIVE: lauded as a superfood, olive oil is rich in polyphenols, which may protect against cancer and heart disease. Its high levels of monounsaturated fats may help lower LDL cholesterol and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Research has indicated it might cut the risk of type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Go for extravirgin, though its low smoke point makes it best suited to salad dressings.

Summer is the top time of year for fleas, and they can cause problems both for your pet and your home.

Signs your pet has fleas include scratching, hair loss, bald or sore areas, flea droppings (dark specks in your animal’s coat), small brown-black insects running around, or if you have bites yourself.

Bites can cause allergic reactions from flea saliva, anaemia from blood loss and other diseases.

Myxomatosis, which can be fatal in rabbits, is often spread by biting insects. Tapeworm eggs may be present in flea larvae, so your animal could end up with tapeworm too.

To check for fleas, run a fine-toothed comb through your pet’s fur over a piece of kitchen roll. You will need to treat an infestation quickly – get advice from your vet on what to use.

Treat it regularly, even after fleas have gone. Clean your furry companion’s bedding frequently and run the vacuum cleaner over all floors, and you may need to use a home spray too.

At last we are in high Summer and days out and about are the order of the day (whatever the weather).

Our free art in the garden event runs during July and August when we install original works of art in our demonstration gardens. Come an explore the exhibition, treat yourself in the Orangery tearoom and be tempted by the goodies offered for sale in Scotland’s home of garden ornaments.

We wonder whether you and your garden would be delighted by a classical beauty or perhaps a hand painted classical portrait like this Medusa by artist Joanna Westwater shown at last year’s event. Joanna has installed another gallery of her hand painted images on recycled wood for this year’s event. You’ll be surprised by the range of her subjects, some very handsome and others cute and cheeky!

We are always delighted to discover creations by garden owners when we visit their gardens. It might be an attractive arrangement of stones, painted watering cans or living plants trained as topiary.

Dougal maintains that topiary is the ideal gardening activity for men: it only needs attention once a year unlike the lawn; when you’ve finished everyone tells you how clever you are; he usually manages to get help with the clearing up!

“I Have the Power” is probably one of the most famous lines of the sci fi–fantasy melting pot that is Masters of the Universe.

The original TV show and the film starring Dolph Lundgren are nothing short of iconic, despite being very much products of their time. It was only a matter of time before we received a full on reboot of the franchise. Travis Knight, one of the founders of Laika and director of Bumblebee, took on this task. The result is enjoyable, but mixed, to say the least.

There’s a growing cynicism toward legacy properties, particularly their history and character names. Rather than being seen simply as products of their times, these elements are often used as vehicles for comedy, leading to moments that can only be described as cringeworthy and ashamed of the property they’re trying to adapt. This is disappointing, because when the film fully embraces its campiness, it becomes a lot of fun. When Prince Adam transforms into He-Man, it is nothing short of immaculate.

The film also tackles themes of masculinity and staying true to who you are, which are wonderful to see in modern blockbuster storytelling. The cast is similarly mixed, with Nicholas Galitzine and Idris Elba standing out, while Alison Brie feels lacklustre and underutilised.

As family entertainment, you could do much worse than this. It’s not perfect, and I wish it were less silly at times, but does that matter when the kids in my screening clearly had a great time?

In the way mulled wine is synonymous with winter and cold weather, so too is summer, garden parties and Pimm’s No. 1 Cup. A cool, refreshing, long drink, Pimm’s is a delicious alternative to wine and feels more sophisticated than punch. I first tasted Pimm’s at a summer wedding reception; it is very easy to drink and very easy to forget it is a gin-based spirit!

Proudly displaying the Royal Warrant on its crisp white label, Pimm’s is the quintessential Great British summer drink. It has been served at Wimbledon since 1971 and evokes images of lazy hazy summer days. Developed by James Pimm in London in the mid-19th century, today Pimm’s has a Scottish connection; the gin-based spirit is distilled in Fife! It is made using a closely guarded secret recipe that apparently only 6 people know. It started out as a health remedy to aid digestion (of oysters!) but is now one of the UK’s most popular summer drinks brands. On the nose it is easy to detect fragrant orange, warm spices like clove and herbal botanicals.

The classic way to prepare Pimm’s No. 1. is in a tall glass or pitcher.

Serve three parts lemonade to one part Pimm’s and pour over sliced summer fruits, cucumber and ice.
